  • 'Summer in Bunclody'
Here is a song I recorded today with a tradtional singer called Marianne McAleer at Ballinacoola Holy Well near Ballindaggin in Co. Wexford. It is his song written by Liverpool singer and songwriter Bruce Scott (1941-2016), and was entered in the ‘Newly Composed Ballads’ competition in Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 1991. Bruce had been coming to Wexford since the 1960s and the song is about courtship and marriage and paints a beautiful picture of Bunclody through the seasons.
The song is not well known at all and so as part of Aileen's 'Bunclody Song Collection Project' she asked Marianne to sing it for her the next time she visited. It's a beautiful song in praise of place and Marianne's singing, delivery and control of the song is exquisite and full of feeling. Have a listen, it is only gorgeous. Sadly Bruce passed away in 2016.
    Text: Michael Fortune
