Rugged Ridge could not give me a torque spec for the bolts. UGH.. come on RR.. anyway, I ended up torqueing the shackle bolts to 55ft lbs. This is not factory recommendation, but I could not find out what that was. I came up with 55 from my own research. If you find something better, let us all know!! Thx :)
Your videos are the bomb!! I'm a woman & I've heard repeatedly that fixing my Wrangler isn't worth it bcuz I drove my baby Rusty really hard & broke my leaf spring & watching your video just shows me what mama always taught me. Where there's a will there's a way. So thank you.
Hey Dale. I have noticed that on a lot of different rubber bushings, that they get soft or mushy over time from having grease on them. So I often use silicone brake grease instead of bearing grease. The silicone grease doesn't soak in to the rubber. And it works excellent for repelling moisture. ..
Thank you for this video. Note to anyone else attempting this. Be patient, have lots of PB Blaster, a cutting wheel, a saws all with carbide tips, a breaker bar, floor jacks, jacks stands, and did I mention, a lot of patience. I had to walk away and come back to this project several times. It was not a two hour install like the box said.
I'm late for class here, but I have always found leaving PB Blaster to soak overnight on nuts/bolts will save me teaching new cuss words to the neighborhood kids.
This brings back painful memories of replacing the suspension components on my Subaru Forester. The rear passenger side I went and bought biggest Milwaukee 18 V half-inch impact I can get. No torches, no hammering. I put some PB blaster on it and it either came off or broke off. Screw hours of tedious work.
Hey Dale, these is absolutely helpful video for me, I have a 1993 Jeep wràngler and I needed help to replace the leaf springs. So big thanks for your video.👍
dont go to 55ft lbs on the center bolt. i do about 35 with nylock nuts on the main bolts and I dont even run the center bolt but if I did it would get the same 35. YMMV. IMO that center bolt is just flex inhibitor
@@Bigbeachbitch77 feels a bit stiffer but overall I can't complain. It still rides like a leaf sprung jeep and for the price it was worth it for me. I do have a heavy smittybilt bumper/tire carrier and had to add 1inch boomerang shackles in the rear to lvl it out. Havent gone to hard on it yet either, Hope that helps 🙏
I have a 92 yj... reverse the front shackle position really helps the handling on the road, without changing spring articulation.... in other words make the front spring mount solid and the shackle at the back of the front spring....
I cut mine off with my off with my Dewalt saber saw. Much easier. Love your videos. I have a 1992 also and I went with a Skyjacker lift. . Thank you I enjoy them all.
I put 2" lift shackles on my jeep wrangler and I didn't have to cut the bolt off. I loosened the gas tank enough pushed forward a little bit and it slid out without cutting it.
Heat gun my friend. It's amazing what a little heat will do. This is an old video so you may have already gotten one, but if not, they are well worth their price.
Try using aerokroil penetrating oil instead of PB blaster. You will thank me later. I normally add some heat (propane or mapp gas) then spray on aerokroil wait a few minutes then “bang”they come off. Works great!
a 1/8" zip wheel on four 4" grinder, cut through the old bushing and bolt between the spring hanger and both sides of the spring, go buy new bolt, install new spring and new bushing, just be careful controlling your cutting wheel. saves sooo much blood sweat and tears. there is enough room, but have a steady hand.
Brother says acetone and brake fluid works better than pb buster. Also, saw another video that shows if you swing rear leaf spring all the way to the back it will clear gas tank. Starting this project soon. Do you have video of front leaf spring removal /install?
Apply PB Blaster or penetrating oil 24 hours in advance. Use Red Rustoleum primer to reduce the rust; do this all over for light surface rust; it solves the problem of rust; do it periodicaly!
Thanks for videos...just replaced fuel tank skid plate, fuel hoses, etc from one of your other videos and putting POR 15 on frame, etc. Keeping leaf springs but in the process of replacing bushings. When removing leaf springs I didn't loosen the shackle. Question...shouldn't the eyes/holes match up when putting back on without loosening the shackle? Mine are off a bit and not sure why...possibly due to no weight on them, etc? Thanks again
Hey Dale absolutely love your videos. New subscription here. Taking on complete tie rod replacement because of your videos and I appreciate it. I have a question concerning boomerang shackles..... I have a 95 YJ 4.0. I have a 4" RC suspension lift with a 1" TC drop. Im wanting to put on some boomerang shackles on all 4 springs but was curious if this would mess up any steering angles or driveshaft angles?
:) My front bolts on my shocks, front and rear, took me about 15 minutes of heat on them, until everything was red, then a few minutes of impact driver....then it became a sparky mess that finally broke free.
My rear left spring occasionally makes a clink sound and the whole body of the jeep shifts over a little when it happens, I think one of the leafs is slipping over another and gets slapped back in when I make a hard turn. Do I need a new leaf? There is visually nothing wrong with them, I clean them regularly and they have almost 0 rust.
Hey Dale, I'm going to be changing out front and rear leaf springs, what size bushing are needed for the frame of the YJ that bolts to the shackle, the one you had to drill out? Please help I need to order the right bushing for front and back
I know I haven't seen you in quite a while. You got the Ned Flanders look going on there. ;) Anyway, I'm hopeful to learn from your mistakes when I have to replace any future leaf springs.
@@JeepSolid You're welcome. Oddly enough, there is a heavy metal band called "The Ned Flanders" who dress like the Simpsons character. Specific torque wrench setting: pft, pretty fkn tight.
85ft-lb - 95ft-lb is what was on my documentation.
I have never bothered torquing spring bolts, pft has always worked(pretty fkn tight”:).

I’ve always said that it takes the amount of time on the box when the vehicle is new, once it gets old it takes longer

When a bolt finally flies out like that I recommend executing a "Dean Scream" in celebration of your triumph.

I'm gonna be trying this soon on a 1995 yj. This video definitely helps. Thank you!!!!!
Great job. I had the same issue with my 1993 in getting those bolts off. Great job!!!
You have more patience than me. I ended up using my sawzall on that frame bolt lol.
Thank you for this video and thank you for showing the struggle, i hate videos that make it seem like a quick job and it ends up being hell. haha
Thank you for the tips. Would’ve loved to see the Jeep after the install was completed.
good video, decided to replace my gas tank skid plate at the same time I lift my YJ!
Excellent video! I’m looking to install rough country 2.5” lift kit and springs on a scout 800 and I found your tips to be super helpful. Thank you!
I always spray paint everything black once in there. Drum, frame, etc

Doing this tomorrow on my '89 and wasn't sure on a few points, thanks for posting!
Just ordered my rough country 2.5 in lift kit to replace my old sagging 91 yj suspension. This is very helpful, thanks Dale!
I have been researching 2.5" lift kits and found alot of negative reviews on rough country kit (I have 1995 yj) how is yours on street, trails...?

Don’t forget!
Dude You are the Bomb!!!!💣💣 Thanx for this video. I'm getting ready to do this exactly to my CJ5!!! 🤘😝🤘
That's exactly what happened to my rear leaf bolts. They rusted to the spring bushing insert. I carefully cut mine out with an abrasive disk.
Removing the front and the back track bars..for a softer ride and less darting

I like both, but you're right Aerokroil is good stuff.
When those leaf spring bolts won't budge, break out the side grinder with a thin cut-off... had to use that on 5 of 8 l.s. bolts.
no center sleeve in the rear hanger per instructions on a yj. but do use the center sleeve on the front.

Yeah. Huge pain, but got it done
Thanks for the video!
Just go by the diameter and grade of your bolts for torque. 9/16" diameter Grade 8
I looked it up, coarse is 115 ft lbs. And fine is 129 ft lbs.

This was a pain in the rear when i put my lift on earlier this year. My suggestion is letting the next guy do these if you dont absolutely have to.
yeah. Was a huge pain. Had to get it done because of the broken leaf spring.

No. Not changing them right now. but maybe a 2.5" lift in the future..??

the best tool for the front bolts...........a reciprocating saw, then replace the bolt with a new one. Two minutes.
Hi, like to ask what length of metal cutting blade did you need on the saw 6" or larger?
Rough country better ?
Well that looked easy enough...😂😂😂

You need to quit using deep sockets first off and second get the dam torch out
Don’t have standard 1/2” sockets. Only deep set. I’d like to get some in the future 👍🏼 Using what I have for now

Deep set create a slightly worse angle in this application. Would be better to have the arm of the wrench closer to the bolt head
