    When testing the voltage, you should have a load. Use a small automotive bulb. This will give you a more representative voltage plus you can see how bright the bulb lights.
    Looks very nicely done. Best wishes.

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад

      Hi! Thank you for your comment! You are totally right, testing the voltage without a load is not perfect. In my case it was good enough, I just wanted to see if I got any voltage or not. I will see quickly if it works under load when I am going to run the first trains.

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад +1

      Oh you need to watch closely. The inspectors are sneaking around everywhere...
      8:05 inspectors head in lower frame inspecting wire pull
      and since they missed the underground wire inspection before backfilling the dirt they opend up the trench again and left me with a mess to clean up :)
      Those are very picky inspectors...

    Nicely done but you will be doing it again as you have left the copper in your cable open to moisture at the point where you soldered it.
    This means that you get a nice green color on your copper because of the corrosion. That will lead to increased resistance which will lead to voltage drop which will lead to malfunctions.

    • @summitrailway

      Thank´s for your advice. This can be a problem in the future and I will think of your comment when I am redoing it the second time :)

    Looking great Robert!!!! Can’t wait to see some activities on the railways. Do you have a particular theme for the final railway? More than once during this vid I wanted to hand you a cordless impact tool. 😂. Chomping at the bits for the next addition 👍

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Since I do have power to the tracks it won´t be long until we get to see some trains moving. The first bit of the layout will be german narrow gauge theme (Harzer Schmalspurbahn), the second bit, which has to be build yet, will be more like swiss narrow gauge (Rhätische Bahn). So we will get two themes in one layout. My rolling stock is all over the place, I run german and swiss narrow gauge and some german standard gauge trains as well. By the way, I do own a impact tool but I often forget to use it and instead grab a screw driver ... my bad.

    Have you ever considered going battery. I run both railpro and revolution. After making the switch to battery it removed all the headaches of trying to get consistent power plus we can run reverse loops without issues making running trains more fun and less work.

      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! I know that battery is a available option but not for me personally. I share my hobby with several friends and we like to meet up and share our rolling stock. That´s the main reason why I stick to the track power approach, so all of our rolling stock is interchangeable.

    Love your videos!! Perhaps a nooby question, but is it possible to connect the central station with 2x 2,5mm2 regular solid copper cable to the track?

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  6 месяцев назад

      Hi, good to hear form you! "There is no dumb question, only dumb answers" thats what a smart man told me once :) It is totally possible to connect the central station with 2x 2,5mm2 regular solid copper cable. The right cross-section of the wire is determined by the amperage and the length of your cable run. More amps and a long cable require a bigger cross-section. On my layout I have very long cable runs in addition to a big amperage draw of 8 to 10 amps so I will use 6mm2 wire for the most part. But if your central station is close to your track (2 - 5 meters) your proposed cable is sufficient. I hope this was helpfull to you, see you next time!

    • @frankbroos2872
      @frankbroos2872 6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, thanks for your answers! The cable length will be about 10-12m from the Massoth to the track. For now the trains will use less amperage but in a future state there might be 3 trains running simultaneous. You're suggesting 2,5mm2 will not suffice then? @@summitrailway

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  6 месяцев назад

      @@frankbroos2872For what you are planning to do the 2,5mm2 cable will be sufficient. If you want to go the absolute 100% safe rout you can use 4mm2 cable but I doubt it would make a big difference. A good pointer is when your locos have trouble receifing the command signals form the central station (won´t react to your control imputs) then your cable might be to small or you have different electrical problems along the line like a loose screwing connector for your track.

      Moin! Ja der erste Schnee ist gefallen. Leider war ich auf Dienstreise und hab den Spaß verpasst...
      Ich habe die Kabel verlötet um zum den Kabelquerschnitt vollständig auf das Gleis zu übertragen ohne eine dieser winzigen Lötfahnen zu nutzen. So ist es viel stabieler und es kann sich schon mal keine Schraube an der Lötfahne lösen ... nur noch die am Schienenverbinder. Die Anlage wird in zwei Teile geteilt. Den bereits erbauten Teil versorgt die Digitalzentrale über diese Haupteinspeisung und eine Unterstützungseinspeisung im Bahnhof die noch nicht angeschlossen ist. Den zweiten Teil den ich erst noch bauen muss versorge ich per Booster über eine weitere Einspeisung. Danke fürs anschauen, bis zum nächsten Video!

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! Nice to hear form you. So far the points are not controlled in any way but that has to change in the future. I will have some manually controlled switches around the shunting area. In the big station area I will control signals and switches via a self build, analog control pannel that I have to build yet. This will be featured on this channel in great detail since it will be a big project. See you next time!

  • @texano54

    Hallo Robert! I am looking for a digital central station. I have a PIKO DCC loco (ordered the NORTH POLE EXPRESS MOGUL 🙂) and was therefore considering a PIKO central station. I was wondering what considerations you contemplated when selecting the Massoth system. Price wise they seem to be about the same $. Thanks for your insights

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад

      Hi! I am a big fan of the massoth central station for the following reasons:
      1. It has proven to be a very stable platform from a software standpoint
      2. The hand held controller is much preferred in contrast to a tablet or other hand held controller on the market
      3. The wireless control system is very capable in regards to range
      4. 12A of track power is a must have for any mid size layout on which multiple trains are going to operate
      Piko is offering a re branded massoth hand held controller, it is the same just a different color. I have no experience with the piko digital central station. It only offers 5A of track power which will be sufficient for a small to medium size layout. Running big locos or double headed trains will show the limits of this central station pretty soon. The price of the piko central station is less than for the massoth station at least in my area. Depending on the size of your layout and your future plans you have to decide for your self which one is the better choice for you...

  • @EliotJohnson
    @EliotJohnson 9 месяцев назад +1

    You have a nice big yard. How do you know how much electricity you need to run the trains with?

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! The trains run at 24V, thats a given fact from the industry. The amount of amps which is needed strongly depends on the usage of the layout. I will have train meetings with friends where we are going to run multiple locos at the same time. Given that every loco draws between 2 and 4 amps under load and the fact that I have many passenger cars with interior lighting I figure from experience that I will need 12 - 16 amps at some occasions. Thats the reason why I want to install a booser in addition to my central station. In addition to that I am going to wire some fixed lights in my shunting yard and some of the platform lights directly to the track which will draw some power too.

    Moin Robert, Erstmal wieder vielen Lieben Dank für Dein neustes Update! Ist ja wie immer sehr Interessant gewessen! Aber eines möchte ich jetzt auch bitte mal was an merken an das Video! Was deine Freundin an der Säulen stand bohr maschiene betrifft. Ich hatte da wirklich Angst um deine Freundin mit den Langen Haaren! Weil lange Haare haben an der Bohrmaschiene nix zu suchen wegen der eigenen Sicherheit! Und weil Lange Haare durch die Anzugskräfte beim Drehen des Bohrers sich ganz schnell im Bohrer verfangen können! Habe ich vor einigen Jahren selbst schon mit erlebt. Ist überhaupt nicht schön. Sollte jetzt keine Kritik an euch seien sondern nur ein Sicherheitshinweis! Besser ist es für deine Freundin beim Bohren lieber die Haare nach hinten binden.
    Und dann habe gleich mal mehrere Fragen?
    Welchen Kabel Querschnitt hast du Verlegt? Welche Wago Klemmen genau sind die für den Außenbereich gedacht? Und die Verteilerdose ist das auch eine Spezialausführung für Feuchtigkeit abweisend u.s.w. ? Und wie zu Frieden bist du mit deiner Massoth Zentrale?
    LG Dominik

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Dominik! Danke für deinen Hinweis. Selbst die langen Ärmel wären in meinem Ausbildungsbetrieb ein no go gewesen und die Schutzbrille hat auch gefehlt. Kurzum, alles falsch gemacht 😉 Ich gelobe Besserung. Jetzt zu deinen Fragen:
      Kabelquerschnitt Zentrale - Verteiler 6 mm2 _ Verteiler - Gleis 4 mm2
      Verteilerdose wäre abgedichtet wenn ich nicht oben 6 einzelne Kabel durch ein Loch eingeführt hätte. Da das ganze aber mximal leichtes Spritzwasser von hinten abbekommt stellt es kein Problem dar. Die Wago Klemme ist soweit ich weiß für den Außenbereich geeignet, ich werde sie auch unter Gebäuden und co verwenden. Der Langzeittest wirds zeigen, löten kann ich immer noch :) Mit der Massoth Zentrale bin ich sehr zufrieden, die 12A Ausgangsleistung und die gute Funk Reichweite vom Funk EU+ (alter Funksender) sind die Hauptgründe warum sie meiner Meinung nach für die Gartenbahn fast jedem anderen Hersteller überlegen ist. Dazu kommt noch eine sehr gute Betriebssicherheit. Wir verwenden die Zentralen auf 3 unterschiedlichen Anlagen und überall funktioniert das System nahezu fehlerfrei. Nur ganz selten hängt sich die Zentrale mal auf und muss neu gestartet werden aber das sind wirklich Einzelfälle
      LG Robert

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway  9 месяцев назад

      I bet you are wrong with this one ... reason beeing is that I need my rolling stock to be interchangeable with my friends rolling stock. We have big meet ups several times a year where we bring lots of rolling stock together at one layout. To make that happen we have established our own little standard so everything is interchangeable

    • @oldwizzy
      @oldwizzy 9 месяцев назад

      @@summitrailway They all said that in the beginning, until they were tired of 1) constantly cleaning the track because of the many oxidation that occurs, 2) switch problems where the locomotives constantly stand still due to all kinds of problems (something that a self-powered locomotive does not suffer from).
      Take a look at the following website, it has been working for more than 10 years per battery and many have followed this path
