This case happened my freshman year at college. Mandy lived across the hall from my roommates and me. We had just signed to be on her enter mural basketball team. We held a memorial in our dorm common room for her. All of were crying. We couldn’t believe it. It was so sad and heartbreaking. She was beautiful and sweetheart. The world lost a lot when it lost Mandy.
This case has always been a hard one to listen to for me. I can’t imagine what you and your friends went through. She sounded like such a lovely young girl. I’m sure you’re a better person for knowing her in her short life. ❤
Is anyone else horrified as to the amount of cases where the murderer kills once, a crime of opportunity, and goes on and leads a "normal" life with a wife and kids? There are so many of these......who are these "men"??
@funwithFred just last week I thought the same thing. What causes a normal, average person to take someone's life & then just go on living their normal life, being a pillar of the community, and have a family, never getting caught or caught after 20 or more years! 😢
Gary Ridgeway (One of the worst serial killers in U.S. history) had a whole wife and kids. None of them expected him of killing. I know his wife at one point thought he was cheating on her with other women (Which he technically was). He hated women, But fell in love with his wife.
Something that ticks me off is when a person is living his best life for decades after killing somebody and then they are found guilty and only serve 20+ years to life! It drives me nuts 😡
Agreed. Unfortunately, with such an old case, the defendant is subject to the sentencing guidelines used when the crime was committed, not modern guidelines.
What they mean is rich people have the means and do sue over investigations becoming public. So yes law enforcement does in fact make sure they got the right person before making it known they are being investigated. It is your money they are working with, and having to spend a couple miilion to settle lawsuit because you were investigating the wrong person, is not a good thing.
You have to ask what's more likely. The man who made that statement was the "cold case" investigator, and he was offering his explanation and speculation of why the previous investigation didn't look into Bass. What's more likely: The original investigators looked into everyone except Bass. The original investigators didn't look into everyone, including Bass.
Yes, it should have stopped totally in, let's say, 1997. Or in 2006. When did it start? When the first female ran somewhere, 2487 BC, somwhere in today's Angola.
These crime stories can be warnings to take proper precautions and look out for ourselves. However, warnings are almost never mentioned. It's taboo to do so.
Cops still think these type of guys look like monsters. The sad truth they hide in our cities and neighborhoods. Just remember Bundy,Gacy, and BTK. Professional men, white, families, and church going. It scares you to death if you think about it too much.
As soon as that cop said they looked for the odd man out of the community, I thought that's a mistake. I mean, sure, that can be the killer but if we've learned anything in true crime, even as fans, we know that many killers are people who knew the victim, or its the most well liked guy in the community, etc.
And Tim kind of was that "type".....I'm wondering if they had asked more of her friends at school........the women.....if his name would have come up, especially, especially given where he lived that had a clear view of her jogging route past his house.
58:00 not at all placing blame on either friend, but two women were with her and perhaps if they had stayed with her or followed her through getting to her dorm this may never have happened. I am not placing blame on those girls what I'm trying to say is always have a buddy when you go out that you never leave from. My niece was drugged at a party and a guy was trying to leave with her and well blah blah blah-- I'm just saying never leave your buddy that you go with
"I've watched those crime shows, & seen how many people go to prison when they give their DNA." Translation: People go to prison when they commit horrific crimes & leave their DNA, so I refuse. lol
Yes, this was so obvious. Small village, few men, ask around who is creepy, aggressive. Check first those. When they refuse DNA, get it secretly. Should have been resolved in the 90s.
Often one is so close to the material, almost obsessed to find and try a perpetrator successfully, one does not see what one is looking at - the old chestnut cannot see the forest for the trees.
They’re not actually investigating. They wait for a random lead. “Cold cases” that are solved 30 years later- what a joke. It’s typically the usual suspect, the loser next door and some promoted new cop finally feels like running the dna thru the system 30 years later 🤬
Margarita leaving Kristen alone by herself in the parking lot is why she was abducted. My grandma always taught us the buddy system never leave alone anywhere, no matter what. My heart goes to Kristen's family 💜
That's a horrible thing to say. She wanted to go home, but Kristin refused. Are you suggesting that Margarita should have stayed out late when she was trying to be responsible?
No one’s address should be published online, judge or not. “Daniel’s law” should have been for all. Coming from a DV survivor who’s ex husband came after me.
First story - the amount of bulls--t women were expected to put up with from this creep and didn't feel they could talk about unless they had iron clad proof.

The Kristin Smart case still makes me angry because his family continues to move around her remains like it’s a game and they continue to hurt the Smart family and those who love Kristin.
For the first case , how does the brother of the killer now even have a normal relationship with their mother?, being that he thinks his brother is guilty and their mother thinks he innocent. That has to put a strain on their relationship 💔
I guess they couldn't bring up his behavior with the other 2 girls because it would prejudice this case. But to me it shows erratic behavior around the time Becky was murdered
Wow Mrs. Flores could have showed some empathy for Kristin’s family. Cold. Perhaps that is part of why her son turned out to be such a creep. On the flip side go Chris Lambert!
Her behavior did contribute to her disappearance. Not victim shaming, just a fact. As well as all the other blunders by other people. Their are consequences for our bad decisions.
This is sad the killer live his life and only got this? I pray the killer of my brother is caught is already 3years and we are still praying. It happened in Accra Ghana. I'm broken living by the grace of God. So i can imagine went through and what they are still going through.

Im curious to know how on earth did that German shepherd not protect that girl. I usually always always see German shepherds protect their owners and loved ones. Even in over exaggeration. I always see people have German shepherds in their front yard yapping and barking at any little thing that moves.
Agreed but we don’t know that the dog didn’t try to, the cops said it’s likely the man kicked the dog and left it in ditch before attacking the owner, also every dogs are different. I would not hold my dog responsible for the actions of unhinged humans at gunpoint 😂
It also shows how uneducated he is about DNA. Blaming his brother or dad doesn't work😂. Yes they share some common markers but it's like our fingerprints.
Come on.... he's having an affair with her?! Why would she send the dog back home all by itself? That doesn't make any sense. She would have never gone out jogging with the dog if she planned to get down with this disgusting man.

I love how they wait until ten minutes into the last one to drop the bomb that the guy they've spent the entire episode glazing up was an absolutely horrific person. They work so hard to get you to care so that they can try to alleviate him being a monster.
"When you lifted her out of the water, did you say anything to her?" Father: Hmmpf cries and says "your the first person that asked that." Me a father of 3 adult kids, two daughters and the middle one a son, started crying watching the raw emotions of a grieving father. Just tell yourself they are a necessary evil in order for our justice system to function. They’re great when you’re innocent and need them but they’re absolutely disgusting and dreadful when they’re blatantly defending monsters. Unfortunately if they didn’t do it, those monsters would claim inadequate counsel and be granted a new trial or released- so it’s best to just know they are part of the process and hope the prosecution has a solid case.
Bass gets only 27 years? That is not justice. Look at the impact on her hometown. But I am glad Mandy’s mom was happy with it; in the end she lost the most..
innocent, precious and lovely-what a tragedy she had her life taken.....thank God for the DNA training received by the detective who found her-how did those 2 women keep their information to themselves about the killer? the sweet young woman for sure did NOT have a consensual relationship with that monster
So, They still haven’t found Kristen’s body? They have the murderer in prison, why couldn’t they make him tell them? I can’t believe he didn’t try to make a deal in exchange for disclosing the body location! 🤔🤔
whats bizarre is you not grasping what he even said. so maybe delete your post & stop embarrassing yourself. we all got it & found it very profound. grow up, child
No, the reporter meant, considering the cop, being a father himself with a daughter, that the cop said even somewhat resembled the victim, what was the first thing he said to the victim, when he found her. there’s so many aspects to being a police officer completing a duty like this one. It’s not just finding a dead body. There’s the humanistic aspect. The cop is human, a man, a father, it affects them too emotionally, mentally. uncovering something like this so horrific on an innocent. So he was delving into that part.
So they didn't look into Mandy's killers family because they were so well liked. WTF! Staying quiet for over 20 years even though you think you know who killed her. WTF! The 'friend' who left Kristin in the parking lot said she was stone sober. Sounds to me like she was drugged at the party. How could the second 'friend' leave her after supposedly being so concerned at first? Why have campus police? They never do anything!
Because Tim was horrible to his brother and wife, they didn't lie to protect him. How many times we hear "I can't believe he did it, he was such a good person ". Being nice to some doesn't mean he's incapable of horrible things to others.
Thank you for going . through that last case and the solution. I live in DC suburbs and case was mentioned about judge's son being murdered, but the murderer and his suicide was never mentioned.🙄🙄🎉☃️🤶🎄🎀❤️🐉💙💙🌈🌈😎😎🦅🍍🇺🇲
I just watch the one where the guilty person claimed her gsd Jazzy killed her husband. I think she accidently shot the gsd while killing her husband because the gsd came to the defense of the husband. So so so sad. Jazzys remains weren't found.
I implore anyone that has experienced some form of assault as described by the woman where he entered her home under the guise to use her phone….PLEASE report these instances to police. Men like this, this type of behavior is commonly just a stepping stone to more agregious behavior. Police will likely only charge (if they can) if the victim wishes, particularly if there is no physical harm. BUT at least there would always be a record of the incident.
Majority of these old cases in 48h it's an old man that got married and has family that committed God knows how many crimes when they were 20y/40y and got away.
It's so hard to believe that her dog wouldn't protect her. I've had 2 male German Shepherds, they are the most loyal protective dogs ever! Yet loving family dogs. Which I heard but never owned a female that they can be even more aggressive. My current boy is 12 yrs old & know he would protect me if it meant losing his own life regardles weapon or not...he has actually saved my life being followed by a stranger that threatened me. It almost seems as if somebody had known her dog... I am very wary on who I allow him to be friends with.
This is already heartbreaking 😢😢😢😢 poor sweetheart I am devastated for you all I really am. It's totally unfair I despise low lifes who treat good people this way.
If Mandy was having an affair with a married older man (like the suspect says) you know she would have confided in her sister or a close friend. I don't believe for a minute she was and it pisses me off that he tried to sully her reputation by saying that. The creepy way he acted towards those two women and the lies he asked his family to tell on his behalf only solidifies his guilt to me. I hope Mandy's mom and family have the closure they needed. RIP Mandy 💔
Thank you to the family for mot lying to protect him. Even his mom, that think he's innocent. His wife must be so relieved to get the divorce without him retaliating.

One of the problems with the time given them is what was on the books at the time of their crime.
Yeah, they got to have a life, get married, and have kids etc.
Agreed. Unfortunately, with such an old case, the defendant is subject to the sentencing guidelines used when the crime was committed, not modern guidelines.
"We didn't investigate him because they're prminent in the community". WHAT THE ACTUAL PHUQUE???

Exactly why I stopped running alone
Yes, it should have stopped totally in, let's say, 1997. Or in 2006. When did it start? When the first female ran somewhere, 2487 BC, somwhere in today's Angola.
@kelseymariel2127 Yes stay safe. We as adults feel we shouldn't be scared to do things alone BUT it's the world we live in.

Thank you 48hrs for featuring Mandy’s case.
This is a cruel world with many cruel heartless people 😢
Exactly Donald old Trump 😢
Lots of good people, too. Don't focus too heavily on the bad.
It's not the world, it's the people in it.
It really pisses me off that so often cops don't take missing women seriously!!!!
Only 1 in 1,000 cases there is foul play.
That's really not accurate at all. It's just one of those popular things to say.
So, the cops ask for dna from every male around town, but not the guy Mandy’s age living 3 miles away 🤦🏼♂️
Cops still think these type of guys look like monsters. The sad truth they hide in our cities and neighborhoods. Just remember Bundy,Gacy, and BTK. Professional men, white, families, and church going. It scares you to death if you think about it too much.

whats bizarre is you not grasping what he even said. so maybe delete your post & stop embarrassing yourself. we all got it & found it very profound. grow up, child
Roy's hat was one of the least surprising things I've seen in years.
So much pain
What was bothering an 8 yo, becomes his passion to solve. Amazing!
Bakery owner is a G!
Absolutely I want to be on her team!
Kristin's case is terribly sad
Thank you for going . through that last case and the solution. I live in DC suburbs and case was mentioned about judge's son being murdered, but the murderer and his suicide was never mentioned.🙄🙄🎉☃️🤶🎄🎀❤️🐉💙💙🌈🌈😎😎🦅🍍🇺🇲
Rerun after rerun ... They stopped making episodes?
Hi guys,
I’m not an investigator, but wouldn’t you do a DNA sweep a certain radius around the crime?
@TheMobileGeriatrician
You'd run into issues with the 4th Amendment.
It's the same reason you can't search every house in the neighborhood.
Need probable cause bro
I shouldn’t matter how much money someone has or who they are. You need to do your job.
1:44:20 my heart aches for you Your Honor
I detest Animal cruelty too , I know that sweet German Shepherd Tyra really attempted to save Amanda 😢😢😢😢 x x x x
02:30 love this time-lapse cinematography
The other guys must have known TIM BASS was weird, not just the girls❓
Grateful he was caught, finally.
So sad god bless all the people who helped
It breaks my heart to see inocent people died like this 💔
The Flores case gives me chills, 25 years in jail without any real evidence. Guilty or not, there has to be proof.
I understand defense attorneys have a job to do but idk how some of them can live with themselves
Majority of these old cases in 48h it's an old man that got married and has family that committed God knows how many crimes when they were 20y/40y and got away.
God bless all these people
What a piece of crap! I don’t know why people think because you think you can fool the world , God has seen it all.
Who is the investigator in Kristin Smart’s case? Scooby Doo.
