Found feelings in a band I won't trade. Not even for heaven.
Epic band
Best band in the WORLD!
H was the perfect vocal ‘instrument’ for Marillion’s sound!
Great band: beautiful music. ❤
#MARILLION 🔝
This is truly a band of brothers. Their legacy serves as a glowing example of what humans can do when they work together. Marillion will always be with us. "They live in our hearts and minds".
What a beautiful idea for an episode ❤
Not just great band but as characters are so gracious and no egos anywhere to b found
Words fail me with the intimacy with which we as fans are afforded by such gracious human beings. Thank you.
Sehr sehr gut
Fabulous.
So much more than just a band, but , WHAT A band.
I've only watched 1 minute in and I'm shocked that "This Strange Engine" is 25 years old 😲
I still think of it as one of the new ones!
Drilling Holes and Mad intro from Ian for me!
This has been my favourite Marillion Monthly by far! How fantastic to hear their thoughts.
Ever since I met Marillion in 1979, when I was 19, I've always loved the band, even if Fish's departure marked an era, a sound and an atmosphere that were incomparable!
It wasn't easy to bounce back with a new singer, it didn't seem very easy to me, but with time Steeve found his place and the hearts of the band's faithful fans!
What I find exceptional about this band, apart from the extremely good, precise and well-recorded sound, is its musical cohesion. Perhaps it's the 'progressive rock' style that helps with that, because in the end, everyone has to shine, but without ever blinding the others to the point of putting them in the shade!
On the contrary, everyone has their place, the songs are so well crafted that all the musicians can find a moment of glory in them, while the others strive to play as well as possible with as much talent as possible to highlight the solo of one, the rhythm of another...
I'm not sure there's any room for egocentricity in this band, you can feel that they're all listening to each other, with the sole aim of magnifying the music to an emotional level that's rarely reached!
One of the very few bands to be able to play live, exactly as they do on their studio albums, true ultra-professionals, super demanding and yet, listening to them, it seems so obvious and easy!
For me, the best emotional barometers for testing a song are having goose bumps on your forearms, your throat getting all knotted up and tears flowing down your cheeks. When I listen to the song "the Great Escape", I have all three emotions at the same time and that's only with Marillion and Steeve's second guitar solo transports me into a 3rd dimension!
I only saw them live once in Paris at the time of Fish, and I'll probably never see them again, but at least I've got the discs and DVDs so I can feel close to them!
A big thank you from an old French fan who loves your enormous musical work and the emotions you share with us! 💙🤍❤
❤ Such a beautiful episode of Marillion Monthly, that's why I LOVE THIS BAND, so lovely guys and so wonderful musicians. I like just hearing them talk as much as I like their music !
Best band in the world full stop. Tse my favourite ever track
Solo 2 in This Strange Engine is absolutely sublime...it does something to me I can't explain 💝 Thankyou Mr.Rothery & Marillion 🙂💕🙏
This is great.
One amazing band of musicians 👏👏👏👏👏
Great episode - love to hear their view on the performances of each band member. This band is really a Strange Engine - complex in beauty and it runs and runs and runs. The song "This Strange Engine" is a showcase of all the single talents of them in a sum (which is more than its parts). It's like taking a watch into a magic bowl to see Marillion"s Neverland and you hear Sounds That Can't Be Made
Oh - how wonderful and moving was that episode. Brilliantly put together with no extra commentary- just the band giving us their highlights of each other’s contributions in a frank and genuinely sincere way. I loved it. Thank you, Lucy et al.
You all shine ⭐ H💝 ⭐ Rothers🎸⭐ Pete🎸⭐ Mark 🎹 🥁Ian ⭐
Oh my god I loved this. Absolutely fantastic. Ian's drumming just amazes me. Pete's lower frequencies move me. Mark's synth/piano is so emotional. Steve's guitar solos make me cry happy and sad tears. H's lyrics, ohh wow I don't even know how to describe what I get from those. This band is so talented. So charismatic. So amazing. I love these guys. Oh and Lucy - not forgetting the fantastic woman who works tirelessly to make it all happen. Thank you to all 💟💕
I absolutely adore the arrangements of the invisible man, just superb and every band member gets their own bit
Lovely episode. Shine on Marillion. Looking forward to the This Strange Engine deluxe when it docks.
The comments by the band themselves say it all, and will be replicated by many thousands of fans around the world. Simply incredible music that touches your heart, your soul, and every other sense you possess
Marillion is one of few bands, if not the only band, where so gifted, talented, and accomplished artists and musicians play in fantastic harmony. Each of you are a star, yet nobody acts like it, nobody wants to jump in front of the others to show they are "big and great". For me, this is most pronounced in The Invisible Man (I am sure other fans can name dozens of other songs that show your chemistry and teamwork). As a result, we have been blessed with incredibly rich, artful, and masterful music. I've been listening to Marillion for about 30 years now (yes, I joined late) and I've never ceased to be amazed by the depth and intricacies of your music and lyrics. Each new album is bringing your music to a whole new level. For me, your musicality is second to none. You are, indeed, playing sounds that can’t be made.
The Invisible Man is a brilliant, haunting, piece of musical art
Thank you Marillion, I really cannot put into words just how much pleasure you have given me through your music these past 40 or so years, you are all absolutely stunning musicians in your own right, but just as important wonderful warm humility flows through you all, I feel so sorry for all those who have not been to one of your gigs, or even heard an album, please don't ever stop making music, I wish you all good health & happiness forever.
Pete and Ian are the best rhythm section ever! in my opinion of course!
Best episode for me so far, this shows so perfectly why Marillion are so amazing, it’s the mutual respect for each other as musicians, the way they work so well together and still have space to shine individually within the framework of their music!
As far as Steve H’s lyrics go, he has an ability to say so much in just a few words, and the emotion in the delivery of the words fills out the meaning! His greatest lyrics in my humble opinion has to in “Power”..
But now you can't function
Awake or asleep
As the meaningless world falls away from your feet
And the Universe ceases its light-speed retreat
Life was sweet in the meteor shower
Of the star-high divine
When you sparkled and fell
From heaven to hell
Amazing stuff!
Felt the love for each other ❤ Best band in the world 😍😍😍
OMG it took me 12 days to finally be able to watch this episode.... and WHAT an episode! It made me so emotional. I love this band so much it hurts.
OBRIGADA MARILLION. VOCES SAO APAIXONANTES
What a lovely group of musicians
Steve's best solo - Easter.
Fantastic
Que placer escuchar a mi banda favorita❤!!
Not sure I could love Marillion any more! What a fabulous video and a great testament to their skills as musicians and their characters as wonderful human beings. Off to listen to This Strange Engine now!
Thank you guys for every pleasure and music you enjoyed us with ❤❤❤❤
I love this guys, each of them in a special way…the chemistry is a kind of magic
Amazing to listen to this and strangely, after listening to AHBID on headphones I really began to appreciate the level of detail in Mark's work on the album. He genuinely has some incredible moments and layers which build the songs and hang strong structures on them. Great episode this month 👏👏👏
I listen to music a lot on headphones, when out and about, you really do hear things you might not without them, you are so right. :-)
H, H, H, H!
Fantastic video. I have bought at least 40 live concerts from your website and although I have never seen your band live because I live in the United States, I find every concert to be different and so rewarding to listen to. Every song is like a rock 'n roll Symphony
The best part of the solo from This Strange Engine is that just when you think it's winding down, you're only halfway through.
I'm a little embarrassed but also pleased to hear that the band on stage can see us... me.. with tears in my eyes at the end of Care. It's so incredibly moving.
EXCELENTE 👌
My most favorite mark kelly keyboard moment which bright me to tears the first ten times listening to it was the keys transition to ‘angels’. I imagine I could learn to play that in a short time (it’s simple to play ) but spot on perfectly gorgeous
Wow, after watching this video I have tears in my eyes... Thís is why I love this band so much!! There's so much respect towards each other. Really, really enjoyed this!
And, great that one of my favorite albums of theirs gets the recognitian it deserves: This Strange Engine!! So many songs from this album were mentioned as songs in which one - or ALL - of the band members shine. Goosebumps!!
Dai ragazzi, vogliamo un nuovo disco! FORZA MARILLION ❤❤❤❤❤
Wow. Goosebumps watching this. I love that they all have such respect for each other.
Easter and my strange engine makes me cry every time i hear steve play. I love you guys
Another awesome episode. Thank you!! ❤❤❤
Great choices from the band here! For soulful stuff from Mark I would add the intro to 'Happiness is the Road', which was apparently recorded from the original jam he and Steve H did. The chords are really emotional and the string pad he chooses is also interesting.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love the love here
I found a better way of life
MFFM
Marillion Forever Forever Marillion
What I admire most about Marillion as individuals is how they weave all this beautiful music without stepping on each other's toes! absolutely remarkable!!!!!
Wow
Superb :)
Enjoyed this video, thanks.
With every clip I wanted it to keep going! What a brilliantly put together vid. Only wish it was an hour…at least! Well done!
damn i love this band so much, they are so far above anything i have ever heard, and i have tried to find new music to love , but nothing compares to these guys , they just have it
Eu simplesmente amo vocês. ❤
All just amazing blokes! Take care gents and stay healthy!- Brent, VT USA
❤️
Great. This new installment is so interesting to watch. Reliving some wonderful tracks through the appreciation of the band members for each other's contributions.
When I hear a Marillion track, everything else... can wait. No better band out there. They've got it all. Thanks guys. Keep making the magic.
Videos like this are part of the reason that this will always be my favorite band. I'm a relative latecomer to Marillion - the first album that came out after I found them was Sounds - but the connection to the fans and the dedication to letting us in has made the music so much more potent for me.
They say never meet your heroes, but after sharing a pint at Brutopia... yeah, I'm glad I did.
I think the lyrics to Power are worth a mention , so descriptive and capture the imagination
brilliant, just realised im wearing my 'full of holes' Anoraknophobia T-shirt bought from the Hemmel Hempsted gig like 22 yrs ago, the first time I saw the band. I rember being amazed several times by each of them, Mad was the drumming moment for me and the set was slighty up tempo and absolutely stunning.
Great choices, and such great respect and commeradery amongst them. But surprised no one mentioned Pete's bass line in Quartz. It's one of my go-to warm up riffs.
Really really enjoyed this.
Great episode. Thank you very much for your musicianship!❤
What an enjoyable watch. I have been attending Marillion shows for 40 years plus and they just maintain such a high standard and deserve every bit of praise they receive.
Just amazing 😁😁😁 the best yet -and they’ve all been excellent! Just loved the band’s choices
Great episode
You all shine can't say anything else
Lost for words just make me realise how great marillion are you guys rock words music 🎶🎵always spot on
Loving 'Marillion Monthly'. Really enjoy looking under The Bonnet of The Marillion (Strange) Engine.
A Monthly Highlight for sure.
What makes the band shine on, after all these years, still making sublime music, with passion and creativity. The emotion really makes the songs rise above all others. As someone else correctly surmised in a comment above, they truly are a band of brothers. Each new album is a gem that brings new joy to my life.
I kinda feel sorry for people who don't get this music. It's truly transcendent soulful art.
My favorite moment from each member
H: His closing vocal segment in The Space. Really powerful words and powerful delivery.
Steve: Hard to pick just one, but I'm going to say the solo in Easter. There's not a single wasted moment and the fact that it was a single take makes me appreciate it more.
Mark: The strange sounding synth solo near the start of The Invisible Man. Really compliments the uneasy subject matter of the lyrics.
Pete: Opening bass line in Garden Party. Love the simplicity of the line while complimenting the syncopated timing.
Ian: The entirety of his playing on Lords of the Backstage. He expertly handles the change between 13/8 and 7/8, and I love the fill he does between the first chorus and second verse.
On many Marillion songs it all comes together perfect and one of these is Runaway. That song is so emotional and sublime. The highlight being Steve’s solo which is mixed in with H’s lyrics is amazing. All the band are brilliant on this song.
Fabulous episode - loved it. Great to hear these insights.
No words, loved it, love the band, someone else said a 'band of brothers', which comes from a speech by the Bard to rally his troops but here, there is so much harmony, love and Care... thank you. :-)
Great video. Hearing musicians talking about each other, interesting.
This is probably just me, but I really think they dig This Strange Engine.
Just a hunch
Awesome ❤
Great episode. Not many bands left who just jam out something, and put the pieces together like they can. I'm curious though; has anyone decoded the choir on the intro of Be Hard On Yourself yet?
What fascinates me is that all the Marillion guys look like some regular shmoe in a Supermarket. No pretension, no glamour, no shitty attitude, simple amazing music. I have to say that for Steve Hackett solo also. There is no more Pete and Phil , just a quite incredible guitarist that , like Rothery, puts chils down your spine.
Some of the best musicians are the humblest, marillion, genesis, pink floyd(gilmour) all broke the mould and created so much incredible and long lasting music and let the music speak for them forever.
The blue pain
Fades to a point where it doesn't fade
It stayed
Blue
Stirred his red coat heart to this strange engine
This love
This love
This inconvenient, blind, blood-diamond
This puzzle
I don't understand
That knows no faith
And tries and fails
And tries again
Stares at the sea
The night's dark deep
For one last time
And bleeds
And bleeds
And dies for you
And lies
And is to blame
And is ashamed
And is not the same
And is true
Seriously?? How can it get any better?
What a brilliant episode! Very endearing to hear the boys talk about the songs that they think the others shine during. The chemistry between them all is incredibly palpable, too. Especially found it endearing that Pete had notes so he wouldn't forget to say something.
That was really interesting, great idea! It seems TSE is the bands overall favourite, which I completely understand, its a masterpiece.
Also good to hear praise for Ian in Mad, amazing drum part 🙂
fantastic BTS moments and the Band is an incredible band, everyone in it and every song is just gold, "Care" and the latest album definitely amazing brings me to tears, so grateful you all continue to make music and give us such amazing individual performances as well as the whole! you guys are living legends to so many people, and are played so often throughout our lives. be well, stay musical, stay safe, keep playing!
Alto batero Guillote Coppola!
lets face it, each member is a master of their craft, for me the new kings and the whole FEAR LP is their magnum opus, top prog band, all members are prog gods
mark is to me the heart of the band, always has been , not to take away anything from the other overly talented members , but mark is the glue
That was nice. Fun to see several members single out the second solo in "This Strange Engine", which was also one of the highlights in Berlin. Wish I could share some clips from the Weekend but I know that would endanger my channel's existence, so I won't. 😬
I think every Marillion song has a way of shining on everyone. TSE and Ocean Cloud are the two songs I can listen to and really feel like every member of the band is properly recognized. Quartz is another song like that.
Glad that Trousers mentioned Ringo. The archetypal play for the song drummer. Its never about them, but take them away from the track and it doesnt have that thing any more. Ian is a very rare drummer in that respect.
