Just seeing that its a 9 minute video to get to know how to import step into fusion 360 makes me think they need to make the software more streamlined with importing various fileformats.
Hey, nice video mate! Sadly the drag and drop function does not work for me. I am simply not able to pull the part from the tree over to the component. Did you experience such a problem in the past?
They changed it! You now have to create a new component, activate it, and then right click the design you want to insert > “insert into current design”
Just found your channel because I was looking for a specific problem I'm having with fusion and uploading step files. I'm a newbie so trying to figure out why when I uploaded a step file the sketches aren't included. I'm going to try a few things I've seen on this video to see if I perhaps uploaded it wrong.
Good day, Sir. I downloaded just as you .step file from grabcad, imported in Fusion and I have no colors, my imported model is gray, is there any way I can import file from grabcad with colors? Thanks
hi! i upload a file to the data panel, but when i want to drag to the coponent, it doesn't work and if i double click it opens an online site with the file. can you help me?
Issue I'm having: When I import parts this way, I'll put a component where it goes with the move command. After that, I'll import the next part, and all other parts that have been imported revert back to origin. Is there a way to turn this feature off?
Make sure you tick the “capture position” box in the move menu! Also keep in mind that it’s much better practise to use joints for positioning your components!
I'm a newbie in Fusion360 and I've been struggling to make an assembly. With my student license I am limited to have only 10 designs on workspace at once. My assembly has more than 10 parts (files) and once I have reached that number I am no longer able to add new ones and can't delete the files already added to assembly because appears a message telling that that file is attached to other files and can't be deleted. If someone can help me I'll appreciate the kindness. Thanks in advance!
@@thehardwareguy Thanks for replying. I've figured it out by adding parts to assemble and saving the file as .step closing after each step and reopening again to add new part. Thanks for the video it helped me a lot!
Wow, I can't believe that if you don't save the empty workspace, nothing shows up! That's crazy. If I hadn't seen this video, I could've spent hours trying to fix that simple error. Such a stupid feature.
Hi thehardwareguy. Thank you for good tutorial. I tried to pay membership but it gave an error " could connect to PayPal...etc.... I´ll try later. I have a question about Fusion 360. I downloaded a .STL file from Thingiverse. It is an Signet Ring. I imported it as Mesh to Fusion 360 and did all " Mesh to Brep "- and so on. My problem is, that i want to resize the ring so it fits my finger. But i don´t know how because of all those " facets ". If i wan´t to resize the diameter of the ring but is almost impossible because of those facets. Is there any way to hide those facets so i can resize the rings diameter or how would you do it if possible? Thank you for possible answer. Here is the link to that ring " www.thingiverse.com/thing:244299 "
So, if you're a student or hobbyist, you need to keep an extra slot open, of which there is a paltry 10, for importing STEP files. This is a bad design. This is a bad design, and the group that implemented it with this functionality should feel bad about themselves. Whether its for being poor designers, or blocking a basic feature behind what essentially amounts to a paywall, they can take their pick.

Thanks for sharing :-)
Helpt me alot, tnx
You'd helped me a lot :)
damn a 9 min answer to a 30 sec question
The video doesn't just cover importing. It covers joints and part placement too. You're welcome
that was very useful. thank you.
How can I add dimensions to a step/stl file? My factory want dimensions to my 3d drawings
Thank you soooo much. It was really helpful.
You're a rock star. I love your tutorial style - I will indeed check out your site! Thank you
Excellent tutorial. Thank you :)

I Just have a quick question once the model has been imported how can I scale it to the prefered size
So how do you edit the step file? I tried this and there seems to be no way to delete or edit the file. ?
Thank you, this was really helpful! Is that a Newport accent I hear? :)
Very close :)
Thanks for watching!
@@thehardwareguy same here, far enough away from there but close ;) lol
Real helpful. Curious how you decide if it should be a body or component in your new project? I still don't understand the difference between the two.
When something is a "component", you can use the "assembly" functions and join multiple components
Possibly do an update? None of your great instruction works now. About to pound my head into the keyboard, but love your style.
As far as I can tell you can't drag the models in anymore. You have to right click and 'Insert into current design'
Great explainations. How do you select so easily the center of faces ?
hold CTRL/CMD and hover over :)
I'm trying to import a .stp and merge a body from it with a body in a existing design.
Good day, Sir. I downloaded just as you .step file from grabcad, imported in Fusion and I have no colors, my imported model is gray, is there any way I can import file from grabcad with colors? Thanks
so question here is that motor driver did not had colors why? because original one on grab cad had colors
I don’t think STEP files contain colour information, just information about the model itself... dimensions etc
how do you modify imported component separate from original component?
brake link never mind awesome tutorial
is it possible to import sketchup files to fusion 360 ?
hi!

They changed it. Now instead of dragging you have to Right-Click > Insert

Yes this is a limitation set by Autodesk. If you want full access it's £50/month unfortunately. Not many people are happy about this

I don't know why but I can't drag anything... pls help
Right click -> Insert into Design
