I’m ngl I think that’s a creative liberty they took just cause the original was already pretty good and hasn’t aged too much at all I’m glad they remade it but it feels like overkill lol still I’m happy this is out
This remake definitely took some things from The Origami King. There's unique battle themes per area, every character has a different sound for talking, and it even runs on the same engine as that game.
Its fun, but ill stick with my OG copy. Its fun but i like the charm of the original more. At least may be this time will get an actual Paper Mario game
As insane as this sounds. The graphics makes Rogueport look a little too clean. Like it looks like a pleasant place to live rather than a place where you'll get robbed for looking at a goomba funny.
The original has a more comic book style to it, while the remake goes harder on the paper aesthetic. I much prefer the original's more vibrant colors and the higher framerate gives it a better flow. And I much prefer the original's soundtrack as well.
The only thing I wish the remake retained from the original is the original hammer’s sound effect when you whack something. I feel like the GCN’s “Wa-Doink” (which also sounds more powerful as your hammer upgrades btw) sounds more satisfying than the remake’s “Pooh” (which also stays constant regardless if you have the Super or Ultra Hammer), even if the latter fits better due to the added emphasis on the paper aesthetic.
It looks great, there are some effects that have been stripped, like the sparkle on the stars at the door, the crumpled paper effect for screen transitions, the closeness of the camera on the characters that chip away at some of the charm but I’ll probably still buy this at some point.
The 3D star on the map and the "glass breaking" effect add something for me Everything else in this remake animation is good though, but really miss those 2 things for me
Think it was just a design choice to make it look like it was actually part of the map and not like the crystal star just appeared right in front of them lol
It looks great, my only nitpick is that the camera doesn't do that cool flip when you go to the back alley and is now just a cutaway. That takes a small amount of the charm away, but not a huge deal.
Man, some of yall are being real haters on the remake. Guys, take off the nostalgia glasses for a moment and just appreciate that we are in a timeline where THIS IS HAPPENING. I for one think it looks beautiful, and a lot of the changes they made are just genuinely better (and some features that should have been remade with the rest of the game).
