My 2 goto finess flyline reels are both size 400 baitcasters, one of which is a lefty Daiwa Lexa 400 TW in 7.1:1 gear ratio and a lefty Piscifun Alijos 400 in 6.6:1. Both reels have 40lb Maxcuatro braid and fish 25lb Seaguar Gold Label fluoro on one and 30lb Seaguar Gold Label in the other. Not only can I cast that sardine out much farther than an open face conventional reel, the sardines just swim out much easier due to a significantly lighter spool. On my last trip out fishing Cortez Bank I was the hotstick. Not only did I get first blood I also got my 2 fish limit before anyone else was able to get the 3rd bkuefin onto the boat. That day I proceeded to hook and land a total of 5 bluefin all 40-45lb fish and a PB yellowtail estimated to be 35-40lbs. All fish were caught using baitcasters that day.
Very interesting! I always thought the longer the bait was in captivity the weaker it would get, but the "cured" bait info from Capt. Art was really great, I wish I could ask him how it is that an animal in an unnatural confined environment can gain strength, how do they feed them? A week in a receiving tank always seemed like a bad place to live for a fish. Who knew?
If you feed your sardines good stuff while in captivity you can turn them into superbait. We have used the powdered potatoes from the grocery store when we had nothing else. Their favorite feed is Yellowtail roe.
@@DixieNormus420 So much work goes on "behind the scenes" just to give us a good time, I don't think most of my fellow client/anglers appreciate the work involved in this hobby. Now if I could just figure out why the sportfishing boat's cook's food tastes better on the water, must be the saltwater scent that improves the flavor!
I would change the 1st setup for a slammer 7500 popper setup , the 2nd setup, the FTH15 2 spd or the FTH15XN 2spd can be use from 20 -30 leaders and do great, as you said change change leaders if you are not getting bit
Do you ever see anyone using the Penn live liner like in the 8500 or 7500 if they make that size, as there light weight rig or do you think the actual reel internals would hold up to the abuse of slamming the mechanism into gear to stop something like a 30lB to 40LB tuna?
A Spinfisher VI liveliner in the 6500 or 8500 size is fine for school-size tuna. Bear in mind that the last several seasons have seen mixed sizes among the schools, with 30 pounders sometimes mixed with 150 pounders.
I threw a larger live liner in the trash a couple years ago. My dad was using it and hooked a decent tuna, the reel held up for about 5 minutes before it took a giant crap and my dad lost the fish. Back at the dock we bought a saragosa. We paid for tickets again to go back out the next night because my dad had lost his first and only bluefin. Well, we wacked the shit out of em the next day.
A video in 360p in 2021 wow i did not think that was acceptable anymore on RUclips . Anyway very good talk. Links to the Rods and Reels would improve this video . I see a lot of rod and reel videos that are no longer available to buy there is no point in these videos in 2022 .
thank you for your comments and suggestions! this video is over a year old, but if you subscribe, you'll see new videos each thursday. we are always trying to improve!
Even a year later, every rod and reel shown in this video is still available; though localized shortages are possible because they are VERY popular due to the phenomenal bluefin tuna action we are having again this year!

@@tunanorth I guess, i need to rephrase my question....Does it matter to the fish what color of braid you use if you're using 25 to 50 mono topshot? Again, to the fish and not the fisherman.
Never get tired of listening to this guy.
Almost every comment loaded with info..
Thanks
I could listen to Steve all day lol
Great job on your explanation of what you need!

Awesome info! Thank you.
Most commercial fishing boats used pink line as Thay were using heavier line in clear water

Wait until you see the new Slammer "IV" [gen4] series spinning reels, especially the "DX" [Dealer Exclusive] models!
What are the weight ratings on the 5 rods
I’m the guy with the green braid. 😂😂
Please use an audio device. The sound quality is not so good.
thank you! we have gotten a microphone to use for our speakers, as you'll notice with our more recent (2022) videos.
Thank you!
Cool thanks
What is the rod on your lite set-up ?
The rod shown is from the PENN Carnage III "West Coast" lineup. The model # is CARWCIII1025C80.
Please feel free to post follow-up questions.
What hook size do you use on that go mommy 3 1/2 ounce
Correct spelling is "Gomame". Best hook size for the 3.5 ounce is either a 1/0 or 2/0 Owner ST-66 treble hook.

Weight rating on second rod?
Combo #2 rod is rated 15-40.
What is the rod for th first set-up?
That is an 8-foot conventional-style graphite composite rod, rated for 12-30 pound lines.
Thanks. Does Penn offer anything in that range?
Real finicky biting fish.
Why would the color of the braid matter if you have 25 to 50 yards of Monofilament topshot and 4 to 6 ft of Flurocarbon leader?

@@SearcherSportfishing Sorry, I am talking about the fish' point of view. Some people have boats and doesn't care about tangles.
