I also explain how my swing got so messed up by listening and reading and taking in nonsense form books, videos and people who don't know a thing about the swing.

Hi Matt - The best advice I could give you is to check out Shawn Clement. As you said in this video, forget about the Golf Digest "Positions". Watch a few of his videos and you will realise he teaches you about what your anatomy can do and how it applies to the golf swing. Has changed my mindset and my game completely. I see you making some of the same mistakes as I did. Hope this helps.

That address / impact drill may be the most important thing in any of your videos. Every single good golfer has the same look at impact. Everything else you do is just working out how your body can get into that position. We're all physically different and the journey to impact is going to look different, but the body position at the moment of impact always looks the same. Thanks for bringing us on your journey to fix your swing; keep it up playa.

Baus, you have been so helpful for my game. These couple of vids have refocused my mind on what I have been doing wrong, or rather what I have conceptualised incorrectly. I got a lesson with a really good coach and he got me obsessed with “firing” my left hip/side through and back to pull and rotate everything through - “clear the hips”. I’ve spent 4 months trying to clear my hips in the swing and it either hurt or resulted in a terrible shot or both! This and the vid on the impact bag has changed my (golf) life!

A lot of our swings are like a kaleidoscope - fragmented bits of pieces of advice, articles and self correction. Nothing wrong with most of the tips, but these apply to the average person. The pro is looking at your individual flaw. Way to go Eric. So cool, that he gave you these light bulb moments Matt!
Signed a very below average golfer, who related to a lot of what this demonstrated.

This video is probably one of your best yet. There are many swing instruction videos out there but rarely is there one from a regular joe talking about the trials and tribulations of his golf swing. Its absolutely fascinating and as someone who has gone youtubing and tinkering mixed with a couple of formal lessons its an experience I can relate to. Thank you for laying it out there. Still one of the best golf channels on youtube.

Your explanation of "fundemental misunderstanding" from the Golf Digest articles literally summarized my entire understanding of the back swing. Modern day instruction says to have the club outside the foot line and the clubface slightly pointed downward. I couldn't figure out what changed so much from 20yrs ago to change the initial take back so much. Thanks for all your videos, best content on YT!!!

I have spent the last 5 months practicing my swing without a club as I stand around in line at grocery, which looks silly, or outside waiting around. Before your videos I was focusing on keeping head still and hip rotation. But after your last video I started to incorporate the impact position. It's amazing how much focusing on the first two has improved my actual swing with a club can't wait to see how it's affected with the introduction of the impact position. I seriously do a lot of shadow swings without a club because I'm always waiting around for something or another and don't have a club with me. I think practicing/ focusing on these 3 concepts as much as you can with our without a club is really helpful. Don't need a club for any of this except maybe impact position but again standing around waiting don't usually have a club so do it anyway.

It's time for me to thank Da Playa In Chief ! I'm a self taught wanna be scratch baus . I'm a little over a year back playing the game after not playing for 10 years or more . Shit show was a kind way of describing my swing and golf game . But my inner drive to be the baus I want to be has lead me on my mystical journey thru many ails at the Walmart and halfway across the parking lot when one of many light bulb moment happened to me . And that bright light said RUclips . I spent months and months watching golf videos and that lead me to being more terrible ! that is till I narrow down the channels that actually taught me to swing like a a baus . Ill keep it short golf sidekick and Malaska golf are the only ones that taught me there's more to it than just swing mechanics . The human body works in straight line forces (malaska) And( witmfb) and episodes like why you suck at golf (golf sidekick ) and countless other episodes have taught me a shit ton . Thanks for all your help and many a laughs along the way . I love your channel keep up the great work .

I do not want to give you a swelled head but what a great series of videos between you and Eric.Actually not just those but of your whole channel. Your candour and out loud thinking as well as your enthusiasm are great and I am sure reflect the thoughts and frustrations of tens of thousands average of everyday golfers. Your thrid video with Eric and your comments after on your rooftop or balcony are particularly on point. I have been trying to direct my pathetic game in the direction you are going . Because of my age I may never get there but the journey will be far more enjoyable. Equally enjoyable and instructive are your videos with Gen and Michelle. I have learned more by just watching their swings and comments than with dozens of tv instriuctors although there are a few good ones out there. A video analysis with Eric is tempting but then there is the equipment issue and the fact that my ceiling is already replete with hole from overswung clubs. It is winter here in Canada. Great therapy to watch the scenery in Malaysia and Thailand specially in Covid tmes.

Hey man! Been following you for a long time. After 12 years of golfing in the 80’s and hitting a very terrible place of shanking almost everything, I decided to finally get lessons. Lesson 1 revealed that my grip, turn, weight transfer, sequencing was all very bad. He did say that my wrist hinge was good though 😂 anyway, I’ve coupled his lessons to get the right foundation with the teaching of ZEN golf, and it has been life changing. (Built my own balance board too lol) Hit the range today and hit the farthest 5i of my life, 212 yards. That’s massive for me, I usually expect about 185 yds. So 12 years after I started this journey and 2 weeks of restarting (2 lessons and at least 10 range sessions) this 30 year old shares your sentiment in many ways. Stop listening to your buddies. Get a lesson, learn how to use your body and sequence properly. It will change your game forever.

Love what you say about us perverting our conceptual understanding of golf. So amazing of how we take what we are told or shown and can make it a swing that really is nothing like what we were actually shown or told. I had lessons many years and since getting back into golf and going back again. The part you talked about only listening to your coach is the biggest part people need to take away from this video. We need to quit searching out so many answers from wherever and go to someone who will invest time in helping you develop your swing. Love all your videos but really love this one. Thanks again.

This was the hip movement that was taught early to mid last century. Works great and no back injury. Even old men like me can get 90 degree shoulder turn because hips are doing half that turn. Well, you can see it as turn or pulling trail hip away from target line. Noticed a big difference in your game since these lessons.

@Golf Sidekick one of my biggest problems in my swing was lifting of my head and overswinging in the backswing. I corrected this by making sure (besides correct hip turn) by tilting and keeping my left shoulder down towards the ball. My teacher has mentioned that the more the lower body is in control of the swing motion, the more these types of problems naturally resolve themselves.

You are 100% right there are 1000s of people out there trying to give you advice the majority I think are genuinely trying to help you get better BUT if you are having success with a teaching pro you must block everything out that these people are telling you otherwise your head will be in bits and your wallet considerably lighter with nothing to show for it.

I’ve been on the exact same journey in almost identical circumstances; years of a desk job promoting lack of flexibility and Whilst I understood swing theory I had no idea how far off the mark I was in actual movement until I saw a coach who’s taken me through very similar training steps to you. I’ve come to accept; These are fundamental changes that will see you regress before you get better but in the long run it works. It takes months just to start to get it right but even then more lessons to bed it down. There is no such thing as set and forget. Whilst Lessons felt frustrating I had to accept it was the challenge I needed and the results proved it now I’ve broken 80 twice now which I had never ever done before.

Great Video playa. I've had so many misconceptions of the golf swing just like you. Been working hard to swing more properly. Your teachers method is very similar to George Gankas. Some of the best drills that have helped me understand the golf swing is to hold on alignment rod on the shaft of the club and put an alignment rod on you ball line, Swing the club back make sure that the alignment rod is pointed at ball line or inside it and as you swing through don't let the alignment rod hit you on your lead side(half swings). Quickly learned that my shoulder plane was too flat. this drill really teaches you alot about the feeling of proper rotation. Hit half shots(left arm parallel on the backswing and right arm parallel on the through swing) with that feeling and feel like your doing nothing with your hands and arms, just focus on squatting and rotating properly and in sequence, amazing how good you hit these little halfers, and you see how using ground pressure and rotating is really what drives the swing. George Gankas has some really good videos in more detail aout these, cool and helpful stuff) Always enjoy your content. All the best.

Used the right foot turned out today to straighten the cake leg to get rotation. And it straightened out my drive and I hit it farther without swinging hard to hip rotation adds more power than swinging hard. And it's more controllable. I really needed this for my puzzle

Matt I think you should definitely have a look at Padraig Harrington's videos, particularly the one on grip and setup. Tells it as it is, and is giving great advice which will give you reality and encouragement with the changes you are making and the reasons technique will improve your game. I am firm believer that we can get good at bad habits but correct technique the only way to consistency. Keep up the great work Playa!

The misconception thing is HUGE. Another big component of the turn from my first lessons recently was weight distribution in the feet. Not enough info out there about exactly what parts of your feet you should be feeling pressure during these turns and when you "push" off in the downswing. Great video!

I've recently started watching your golf course videos and really enjoy them. Great format and style. Watching this video is interesting because I've recently has
d the same awakening. It's made me work on leg strength and flexibility massively. The results have been really impressive, the only problem is all the lockdowns are getting in the way

Hi mate, I had the same misconceptions as you and I am at the same stage as you right now. I still have to practice why to stretch my right leg when I rotate my hip is very difficult for me since that misconception of not stretching it is embedded in my brain and I cannot remove it. But when I hit a ball with the correct mechanics, I easily gain about 20 more yards and effortlessly. It blows your mind.

I really appreciate your videos. It makes golf fun for me to just play within myself . The straight leg in the backswing kind of looks like stack and stilt to me. Thanks for posting.

OMG playa, where have you been all my life??? That stuff in the middle about the duck feet and the heel, I'm literally in the process of trying to burn this into my muscle memory right now! I'm getting lessons now that address this, but they're only half-hour lessons and fly by really fast. You're explaining it all very articulately, and I feel like I'm looking into my own subconscious with this video (sorry to get deep there, it's the way of the playa). Love your vids man, keep 'em going! (Also, hurry up with the other bucket hat styles, I really like the ones that aren't available yet)

Two thumps up 👍👍 Very good explanation of all the misunderstanding, wrong concepts and very good self-analysis! But besides that... look how talented you are and even with all the technical flaws in your swing u got down to hcp 4! Shows how good your gameplay and coursemanagement is, besides the great Shortgame. I guess now there’s a straight path down to scratch. 💪 B.t.w. we now got the new hcp system in EUROPE... yeah got down from 8,6 to 5,7 this year ... I guess I have to send my thx to you and your famous strategy vids!

Pretty similar to stack and tilt but simplified. I've just started playing and I'm working my swing to use this kind of style. Played my first 18 holes and shot 109, counting all penalty shots etc. Used a red ball which saved plenty of strokes from lost balls. Golf is fun.

I can relate to literally every point you talk about here, 100%. To be fair, there are a lot of good coaches that show this hip turn on YT (Crossfield for example) although I´ve never got the impact position right. Something to work on over the winter.
    oh, and nice balcony bruh!

I am working on the same hip rotation. If you have never felt it. It is hard to feel, but practicing with that space between your legs really works. You will also hit the ball further, I have increased 20yards

Playa in Chief. I am loving your videos and the rebuilding of your swing in particular. I am going through exactly the same swing mindset evolutions at the moment down in Australia. Your videos are very much on point and very helpful. Esp this latest one. My issue at the moment is the longer I look at the ball at impact (necessary to get the sweet connection) the more I am pulling it (always more so in the back nine). I am tucking the right shoulder, so I am not sure what is causing it. Maybe in part the soft grip, like you say in here. Anyway, im on the journey with you! Peace.
