I learned a lot and after 650 balls I learnt to get to the right impact position. This is a long process and I am doing it because I have the resources and lifestyle to do it at the ripe age of 35. I skipped over this when i was a kid and read books and magazines. Then adult life came and took away my flexibility, mobililty and swing. It's time to get it back.

I took time away from playing to work on the things I am supposed to work on. I get frustrated when I don't practice and then I don't enjoy the golf on the course. I am always trying to find the thing I was supposed to find in the range sessions that I never went to. I did a good number of consecutive days and this is my learning experience with constant feedback from a professional coach.
For those who enquired, the turd did come out around 2 and a half trays into the video. It was a perfect 10, no splash. Then i found out how to keep my head back. The turd was clearly in the way of my thinking brain

Omg 😆 this is the funniest shit but appreciate all your videos !! Great help
"waiting for that turd to mature" haha love it playa 🍻
I was eating a sausage when you said, “I have a turd onboard”. I nearly choked I laughed so hard!😂😂 Thanks mate, made my day!
Best training truth ever... never train with bad luggage..
I’ve been doing lessons over the last 12 months. Your progression to eliminate sway, shallow downswing then hand flips is almost identical to the journey I’ve been on. Great to see others working on similar things. Helps me be less frustrated when the results take time.
Y’know what...that bit about pushing the butt back to keep stacked in the downswing...pure gold! It really works...well done, you Playa!
Eric cogorna talks about this. Put a box behind you to feel yourself push it for feedback
Love your videos! I heard Tiger say the only thing he thought about was getting his right hip deep in the backswing then shooting his left hip back in the downswing.
Your breakthrough regarding your hip pivot and keeping your glutes back is brilliant Matt! It is such a challenge to find ways to get our bodies to actually do the thing we think we are doing. It is little cues like this that can shift us to the next stage. This cue is so helpful to me! Thank you. 😀🏌🏻♂️
I like how you are consciously training and learning a new movement. Coincidently I have been trying the exact same improvement over the winter. (different drill though). People forget, that these tiny changes take long to engrain, to automate. But just like you said, the ball flight is so much different, so much more penetrating. Keep at it!
I am going thru the same process so l can land greens with mid irons, l needed length & accuracy so every swing l do l set up at impact position , come back to address pull the trigger & return to impact position & l have pretty good success..l have been really.enjoying your last 4 lesson videos especially how you're working thru it yourself which is what l do ..diggin it ..cheers Matt
I’m part of the 85% who slides on the down swing. I started doing it because I thought that’s how I get shaft lean. So interesting as I’ve been working on this same exact thing. Your vids have helped me a lot because I know in my mind what I want to do but like you, my body wasn’t cooperating. Keep it up!
Swing Thought: Rotate around the turd
Hey matt, just wanted to say I've been watching your videos since I was just beginning. From breaking 110 to breaking 100 and now trying to break 90, your advice has helped me greatly. Can't wait to keep breaking barriers with the way of the playaaaa
There are a lot of ways to start the backswing and not pull forward on the downswing and better "cover" the ball. One way is the WhaddaGaryPlaya move.
I had a very similar issue last year as you.And what I did was had a feeling of on the backswing I was super wide and I wanted a feeling of being even wider on the downswing and that was achieved by staying on my right side longer in the downswing and allowed me to rotate and not slide.I explode of my right side thru impact up to a full balanced finish
You might try thinking only of your knees. Front knee points behind the ball in backswing and trail knee points forward in the downswing. That helps some people get it.
For that rotation thru the downswing my coach has me up with my back against the wall every 10 balls for 60 seconds. Rotate back, right pocket stays on the wall. Rotate through, left pocket stays on the wall. Left leg feels fully extended at impact, weight should feel like it is on the left heel. Has worked amazingly well for me! Love watching the journey Chief. Play on, can't wait for the post training round vids.
Yep the chair drill is gold
Hey Matt, the buttock and lateral hip with burning in the hamstrings posterior laterally is usually a condition known as piriformis syndrome. It causes that pain and is caused by movements or positions where the hips/thighs are externally rotated (e.g. golf swing). The piriformis muscle does one thing--externally rotate the leg. There are straight forward treatments you can do at home where you internally rotate the thighs in a static stretch. The stretch, while your doing it, makes you want to do anything else but when done the buttock relaxes and is magic.
Left knee straight forward, right knee straight back to initiate back swing; reverse that, left knees back and right knee forward to initiate down swing. No more sway both ways. From Danny Maud. Changed my golf swing for good.
Glad to see the hard works paying off 👍🏻
Swing looks awesome Matt you have given hope to us mere mortals!
So great to see this Matt, i seem to struggle with the same thing.. "falling into the shot" and then there is no space for your arms to stretch out towards the target in the release phase of the swing. And then you chickenwing.....
This is brilliant because I have been working on the sway left towards target. Great to see your journey as well.
I've gone through this exact process myself. A good drill is the 60, 60, 100 drill. Basically the swing starts with 60% of your weight on you leading leg, transferring to 60% on your trail leg at the top of your back swing, transferring to 100% to your leading leg at impact and through to finish. It helps keep your balance throughout the swing.
Chris Ryan golf has a good video on this. Worth a watch.
Thanks for these series of vids. It's got me to take a step back from playing every weekend getting frustrated and working in practice alongside a professional. Thanks Playa
Bro good stuff
This discovery of yours is spot on for me as well. Keep exploring👍
I admire your dedication to your teacher and the practice. Wadda commitment. 🪶
Steve Pratt has a RUclips channel and one of his videos is about left arm positions. It's gold. No pulling down with the left arm, it's all about rotation and as you say here, the right leg rotation
I find that if I "trigger" my downswing but rotating my left knee outwards towards the direction I'm swinging it seems to help me with better contact.. great stuff man, keep up the grind!
it’s eery how similar our golf games are. same age. similar scores. been playing 20 yrs. slight over top move. these are best videos you’ve done i love it cause i think all these same things on range.
one major suggestion i have that i think will help you stay back and start downswing with lower body more....widen your stance 3-4”. you are pretty narrow and it makes balance hard. i think you’ve leaned upper body forward on downswing cause if not you’d fall backwards. body adjust subconsciously. most pros would only stand that narrow 100yds or in. also slight more bend in knees. be athletic.
for a “feeling” to start downswing....imagine someone is pulling your left hip backwards from behind you. keep feet on ground slightly longer through impact and at impact feel most pressure on inside of right foot pushing off.
i’m working on all this same stuff and it’s maddening after 20 yrs of bad habits ingrained in you. but you are doing it correctly step by step. focus on just 1 or 2 things. keep it up i hope you keep doing these videos.
lol brother that string thing is exactly what got me in the pickle i am in. I would rate it at the top of my list of worst advice I’ve ever received. I don’t mean from you. It works for you but in my specific case, I’ve had that active before and it really messed me up
@@GolfSidekick lol it doesn’t really work for me either. my brain and body seem disconnected ha. i know what i should feel and can do practice movements but go to full swing and it falls apart. i’ve also never invested in lessons and the time to correct it. look forward to seeing your progression i think you’re on to something. breaking 70 soon!
Love these videos cause I literally do the exact same moves as you so this whole series has been extremely helpful. Just wish I living in a warmer place like you so I could work on the swing!
I suffer from the same problems you were having so this is extremely helpful!! I used to think the sway was helping me but clearly it is not!
Congratulations on the progress and thank you for sharing the motivational video.
It's like shutting a car door when you're carring a couple of cases of beer, bump the hip with a backwards rotation.
This is exactly what I'm working on too. The thing that helps me, is to only think of rotating the shoulders while keeping the head still.
I find the hips are now starting to naturally pop through the ball but I need more practice getting it into my muscle memory.
Wait for that thing to mature. Arguably the best golf advise I've heard.
Except before the round, gota get that out before the first tee
If you drag the club head back until it comes off the ground while keeping your body quit it will help. I had the same exact issues you had bro keep at it!
Playa In Chief, re: your “swing trigger,” my coach loves the drill where you freeze at the top for a couple seconds, then initiate the downswing. The only way you can hit the ball solidly from that position is with good sequencing. You should be able to identify your ideal trigger on film with that drill 👍🏻
Bro I actually did this. I thought hang on, in my videos, I seem so quick to go from the top, to hitting the ball and I am sure that is creating that sway. And lo and behold it works. Then i realised that's probably why that guy on Tour does it.
@@GolfSidekick It’s a great drill, glad it worked! Always gets me back on track when my feels are off. Keep it up playa, those breakthrough swings you showed looked so good.
Baus playa. So inspirational and respecting the grind. Makes me wanna get to the range now.
Thanks boyfriend
The Srixons sound magical
Great job Mattie! Small lateral shift to the left should start the downswing. Really like you playing 18 holes a commenting.
Keep up that work playa!!
Coincidentally I’m working on these same two swing thoughts. I struggle with stalled hips and flipping. All I’m thinking about now is butt back to initiate downswing, snap lead leg straight to initiate release. It’s not easy but produces great contact when I get it right. The struggle continues.
Kepp going boyfriend
This is borderline ASMR.
Should have heard the turd hit the water. A certifiable Plop
I heard to start downswing slight hip shift toward target which will help put the head behind the ball and drop into the slot. Then do the rest of the good things Eric told you, less thinking involved.
When you went replay your shot, you'll notice in slo-mo your hip did bump toward the target. It help to set for the left leg at impact. Thanks for the video, I'm trying this. An easier golf swing motion!
I have the same issue. Never used to but ruined my swing quite a few years ago doing winter training using one of those short weighted clubs with grip trainer. My grip is great but I inadvertently ingrained a pull movement to initiate the downswing which generates an over the top tendency. Using U.K. lockdown to retrain a new motion.
Horrible playa!
Thinking advanced Golf, I like that. I asked our club pro why he does not use hardware tools to support our training , like you looking at the black tee. E.g. I proposed a cord hanging from the ceiling to indicate us what our head is doing during swing, etc. I have lots if ideas in this respect.
Its not just straightening the left leg, its clearing the left hip. Because, you can straighten the left leg without rotating, but opening the left hip means you're rotating AND straitening the left leg. Big fan Matt! Keep it up.
True playa but each thing leads onto the next - it's all good
Love your vids mate! What club are you practicing with? 6-Iron? Or do you vary your clubs while practicing?
New upload put up 6 mins ago? Immediately clicks, no hesitation
Ask Eric if the Sit move should be your swing trigger to stop having the pull move you in front of the ball. Worked for me when I had the exact same issue you are talking about.
It is playa
Awesome. I'm loving the look of these new shirts in the last few vids. When's the release date Matt, you're making me lose sleep again!?!? 😂
I think in March sometime playa
Thanks! 🤦♂️😂
Loving the content! Your course vlogs are going to be ridiculous with this swing!
I hope so. I just have this sneaky double or triple bogey that creeps up on me from the middle of the fairway usually 130-150 yards out, into the breezE!
Be careful about snapping the left knee. Tiger talks about that in his book, and look how many knee surgeries he has had. Straighten yes, snap no.
Words dont mean actions. It's a trigger word for my brain to do it sooner. Semantics
“I’m gonna wait for that thing to mature”
I can’t even…😂
That lean with the lower body you mentioned is a straight push forward with the right foot which makes the hip look like it's leaning. I think.
My downswing trigger is to bump the left hip toward the target to start the downswing. Bump, not slide.
A good swing trigger is - let the arm/club unit drop from the top. It helps shallow the club and prevents the lunge forward.
"How to initiate" - take your right hand and feel for your bottom right rib directly on your flank (not abdomen or back). Then try tense that muscle area. Even when standing normally. See how that feels and what motion it can trigger and what it makes your hips want to do. I feel like it helps trigger my hips to unwind and to then brace against my left leg.
I am working on something. I move my left KNEE toward the target. That helps you rotate your hips and snap the leg
Prarie doggin.. its awful I had to eat a golf towel on the course once. Did you use that weighted bag alot? I fill like that is the drill to get that lead leg to pop straight at impact. Whacha think?
I came to the conclusion that Eric’s laugh is the same one I make when I get a plate of delicious food put in front of me. Your swing looks yummy 😋
LOL love that
Your trigger can be the left glute rotating back. They pros aren't thinking about that leg, it just happens.
Love your content and Journey , wish you well , think your allready pretty Good !
Love this, very similar to what I am working on
Gankas recommends adding right side bend to stay stacked.
Very informative Days 1-4 practice sessions; that last swing was beautiful. Heading to the range now. And for your unwanted passenger, a large portion of Som tam Thai every night ought to do the trick 😂
Had the same issue. Throwing the right shoulder down while sliding slightly with left leg solved the issue. Same principle as throwing a stone into water.
While your are doing all this training , are you still going out on the course ?(are you filming if you are ?)
Very relatable, good stuff, didn't need the body function bit though !
Matt: swing looks great. You're just rolling it a bit open and to far inside on the backswing, but you get it to a nice position at the top. you might be overswinging at the top of the backswing( you can see your left arm start to bend), that gets you leaning forward at the top and makes you want to initiate the downswing with the shoulders, kind of a little over the top motion. If you watch your swing, take it to the top and then go back about three clicks, it looks perfect there. you'll get more depth and the same shoulder turn, it will be easier to start the transition with the lower body and square up the face with less manipulation, your dispersion will tighten up and you'll probably pick up a little distance. I think your swing has changed quite a lot and you just need to iron out a few more things. If you can clean up the backswing and start the transition with the lower body, I think you'll have a swing that anyone would be jealous of. Really enjoy your dedication to improving the swing. Cheers.
Eric doesn't want to do backswing until i get these things right otherwise I am overloaded but he has ideas of whats going on so we will get there
@@GolfSidekick you're not far off, watch your down the line swings, shoulder turn is flat and you're right about your butt, comes off the wall a little bit in the downswing. Still think your swing looks great. Hoping you go low the next time you play.
Mike Malaska has the answers about clearing the hips. It’s exactly what this video is trying to address.
One way to practice this technique is to start in your final position (ball impact position with hips open) then draw club halfway back then strike forward. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Been watching your vids for a while now and definitely on the same page right now.
I've been thinking: the swing is supposed to be symmetrical. What if one tries practicing lefty? A lefty's backswing is a right's front swing
I'm not sure playa, I have played left handed and all it does is make me depressed as it is one plane. Meanwhile, my right handed swing...is not
Good morning bro. I guess at around 9.36 min. Of your demonstration you reveal the idea of the hip motion.
Downswing trigger, squat, spread your knees a bit, then fire the left hip to straighten out the leg by pushing off the right toe. Try starting the swing from the impact position to see how it feels.
To stop moving my head and my upper body towards the target like you show, my pro said to me that i need to focus on getting my left schoulder more towards the sky. I don’t know if you understand what i mean but it helped me a lot.
how many years have you been playing golf for?
I’ve always referred to the “straightening of the front leg” as triple extension. Where your ankle, knee and hip all extend at the exact same time.
Exactly
Here is what I want you to think about- the front (left) pocket is going to collect the ball- rotate the pocket to catch the ball. On the follow, the right pocket is going to create backspin on the ball.... catch the ball in both pockets, if the arms are chill, (lose the club, and slowly rotate your paockets- the upper body moves). Pocket to pocket- focus on that, no pull with the arms. It'll work!
Sorry didnt understand a thing
I’m with you. Wish I had the money too so the things I’m able too so today. With clubs and lessons.
Just shot my best score ever today at an 86, I just shot a 100 a week ago and I have had a full week of practice.
Legend
Know how things remind you of old swing thoughts and goals? Straightening of the left leg gets the hips through. If you don't you sag. No rotation. Thank you sir!
From what I've been studying: maybe put a chair behind you and try and keep contact. Pivot that left toe out a bit as well, because after years of posting up on mine, I have medial meniscus issues (Tiger documented as well)
The downswing should start when the club is still going back. You’re trying to start after completing backswing. That’s why you slide. I used to do the same thing till I figured that out after a lesson
In your transition, a good feeling is to feel like your just letting your hands float, and unwinding your back bottom to top
Sounds complicated
That turd anecdote absolutely killed me 😂🤣😂
Also just been getting back into golf and you have helped me drop 6 strokes already.
Hey Matt, big fan... I'd like to request more bowel content. Thanks. PS swing lookin NOICE
Brilliant 👏🏻 playa ❤🥃🏴
Dam that looks good nice swing
Golfer must use the ground, pushing against it, to rotate the hips. There is no other choice. The only way to do this is by bending and straightening the knees. The main variable in the lower body, therefore, besides the degree of bend, is synchronizing the timing of the left and right knees, so that you are not working against yourself, and you are able to keep your center where it should be. As your trail knee straightens, it will tend to push your lead side forward, unless your lead leg is straightening. Thinking of slinging a sack of potatoes helps me do this, as noted by another commenter, but I don't know why. I agree with that comment 100%.
Perfect
Weight Shift to left before starting the down swing. Planting left foot will help!
I find a nice little heel-up on the back swing for the driver really gets things in sync. Like Justin Timberlake
I don’t know really anything mechanically about the swing, but that finish is looking as good as rorys!
When I stop flipping it, I will be happier
Chiropractor here. Stretch your piriformis and quadratus lumborum on that left side and strengthen your glutes. Will help will the explosion of that lead hip.
I only see the following medical professionals ( I do not see conventional medicine men - all a load of charlatans)
Chiros, ostepaths, naturopaths, physios, dry needlers, CHinese medicine, Thai medicine.
So your advice is appreciated beast. Just got done with a bunch of squats and deads and on Monday, we do more!
@@GolfSidekick great to hear my man!! Keep grinding!
That's cuz the downswing has to start with left hip moving just slightly to target and gradually turning out to post it up (straighten) The ol' hip twister. That lower body movement can allow the upper body to stay down and "cover" the ball through impact.
Hey Matt, has your back and neck been less irritated with the new swing you have been feverishly practicing?
I hit 2000 balls in 10 days - YES!
Where's the shot tracer? It would be good to see where your shots are now going.
How long did you step away from the course to drill this before going back?
21 days
Stretching or roller routine? My front quad gets tight and my game goes massively backwards as i can't through the ball. :(
Rolling rubber baseball on my ass fo sho
Did you record all this with the iPhone?
The whole channel playa
I was at the range today. I think I hit the first 100 balls pretty well, but I think there is a point after 100 balls where I loose the ability to hit irons. is this normal? is there a point where one should stop hitting because you are too tired?
Yes, when you feel you get tired, just say, after my next flushed iron, I am leaving. In these videos, I hardly finish all the balls. i leave on a final good shot. Even i there are 20 balls left. I just leave them
@@GolfSidekick yeah I went too far today. it goes like first 30 balls 18 handicapper - next 100 balls single figure handicapper. Then after that I think I become a hacker, and start shanking and hosseling
@@GolfSidekick don't know what your goals with golf are. But if you could get your handicap down to 1, you could travel the world competing in all the top Amature tournaments - and then make good vlog content about your travels. There are pleanty of amature tournaments for pre-pro's but you normally need to have a 1 handicap to qualify - I think that would be cool,
@@gaoxinglangblog not during these times though, quarantines, and all the crazy idiocy going on
That trigger could be shifting your weight to the left left slightly to start your down swing. Oh, and another thing, how do I get to play as often as you? lol teach me...
I only play once a week, maybe twice - is that really considered often? Strange places you all live in. When I was a student I would play 4-5 times a week in Johannesburg
try feeling that you're looking at the back of the ball and impact lagging way behind (close to the right side of the hip)
I actually have been looking an inch to an inch and a half in front of the ball. I'm swinging to that point and the ball gets in the way.
