Thank you. I had a really hard time with this part. Just a suggestion the Amazon 1/30 scale boat kit 20 bucks is well worth it. My first boat. Hopeing soon I can make my own rc boat trawler and have some fun building it. Thanks again.
Thanks, im glad you found it helpful.
In ship building, it is common practice to do the planking in steps. You do the garboard, wich is the plank closest to the keel, you do the uppermost plank, and you do one streak in the middle. This middle plank should be placed at a point that is found by laying a straightedge (or a string) from the keel rabbet, and up to the first point it touches on the frame.
Mark this point on each frame, and connect them together with a batten. Check to see that the line is fair and smooth, and mark it out. You can fit a plank above or below this line, or center the plank on the line. This is called a "sheerstrake plank" it is the plank the hull should rest on, if it lay on it's side. Now divide the frames from this plank and up to the uppermost plank equally. If you decide to do, say eight planks, divide the distance on each frame into eight equal widths.
Do the same from the plank and down.
(This example would give you 1+1+1+8+8 strakes of planking)
Connect each line of dots and make sure they are a fair line, adjust if necessary. (Fair strakes are more important than perfectly equal spacing of the planks)
The planking above and below the sheerstrake does not have to be an equal amount, the shape of the hull will decide this. If a "stealer plank" is necessary, it usually happens at the stern just above the garboard.
Take your time doing this process, and you'll have a more beautiful hull and one that is easier to build.
Hi, thank you for your detailed description, very useful when it comes to planking the hull. the main reason I have done these simplified videos was that kit manufactures are lacking or providing totally incorrect instructions when it comes to planking.
Likely the best approach and video for a beginner to memorize. I finally understand how to cut a rabet and no longer force planks into position . Thank you
Hi John, Im glad you found the video useful.
Tremendous good video. I have just a question? Why do you use the planking fan a not just calculate the width? What is the advantage of it?
Hi Peter thanks, no real reason, it is slightly quicker, less calculating to do I guess.

Wrong way to plank
Beg to differ
These kind of comments are much better and respected, IF, they also include the "correct" way as you allude...maybe a link to your video of the correct way is forthcoming; or to a website, YT video of this other method...there are several "methods" to plank, so educate.
@@jeffsims6821 Thanks Jeff, I totally agree, Im not saying this is the only way to plank its one method I have found which makes planking easier for me. Im always open to learning new methods and as you mention if examples were given the comment would have more validity, some people just like to be negative.
The best video I´ve ever seen about planking.
Thank you, Im glad you found it useful.
Stop the music.
your the first to complain about the music, feel free to turn down the volume, or use the mute option on the app, all the instructions are via subtitles.
