My first model was an OcCre HMS Endurance, now I will be starting on OcCre Titanic. Their instructions are beautifully presented and have videos you can watch to assist you. Enjoy.
I wish that someone would do a direct comparison between this version and the Billing Boat version. I've seen nice builds of both but never side by side. They're in the same price range, so they should be comparable.
Hi, after my experience with the Occre, Artesania Latina and Billing Boats comparison of the fishing boats, its very unlikely I would buy another Billing Boats kit so unfortunately it is not a comparison I would do.
A great video, I am very keen to see how you progress further down the hull
Thanks Paul, more is on the way, i will be doing a full planking video / videos on the Occre Polamos
I've just finished the first planking of the Palamos and apart from the bulwarks I'm enjoying it. This is my first wooden ship build and I chose the Palamos because it was supposed to be for a beginner but in my opinion it isn't, though the instructions are pretty good. This model nearly went in the bin because of those f'ing bulwarks but I'm glad I didn't as I'm getting into it now. Luckily mine didn't split but like you I decided to fit them first then cover them, so that'll hide where I've been creative with the pins!
Hi Arthur, glad to hear that your enjoying the kit, I must admit i said more than a few choice words when fitting the bulwarks. Occre instructions are good, nice clear pictures, the only thing I would say about both the Occre and Artesania kits the instructions regarding planking are wrong, and teach the wrong methods.
@@g-kip Hi Grant. I'd heard other people say that the planking instructions were wrong, but are they wrong about the 2nd planking too? I guess the first planking isn't that important as it will be covered. Can you recommend a video for the correct way?
@@arthurjordison5392 Ive done a video that shows one method, i will also be doing a planking video next
Mate seriously. If you know timber then you can understand that .2 mm of a difference is pretty acceptable. This is not plastic and no machine will cut and keep a thin strip at exactly the same thickness. I agree with having diversity in timbers, but I think your thickness comparison is irrelevant.
Hi Josh, thanks for your comments, my main issue is the widths of the planks, there is a large variation when your told the planks are 5mm wide you dont expect to get them ranging from 3.96 - 5.01.
VIDEO IS OK GRANT, - U are doing a great job. I know what it's like!
Thank you
As a video, please
no problem, thank you
I love this series and would love to see the live stream version. If that will not work due to time constraints, I will not be greedy and take what I can get. Looking good!
Thanks, its a nice break from the Santisima Trinidad
Hi Grant, it's very interesting to see the models in direct comparison. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Thanks Wolfgang
I,m enjoying your Channel. Currently, I am building the Occre Palamos. Like you, I found fitting the bulwarks a real problem. Eventually. I Compared the plan with the burwarks supplied I found that they are too wide at the stern and too long . I found that they needed to be shortened by @ 10mm and the height reduced from 42mm to @35 mm to get a reasonable fit . I found that to compensate for the reduced height ,i needed to introduce a taper @ 120 mmm Enjoy
Hi Jimbo, thanks, I didnt think to compare it with the plan, great tip
@@g-kip Neither did I until I ran out of swear words
@@jimbo7788 haha i must admit i said a few choice words myself, is this your first build?
@@g-kip Nope .... I have managed to complete 8 wooden ship kits , 2 Occre trams and 4 1/350 ships since retiring
@@jimbo7788 nice collection, how did you find the trams, ive looked at them a couple of times but havent taken the leap yet, roll on retirement ive a few years left of work.
Great work Grant. Really like these comparison videos. For a beginner the AL kit looks less likely to intimidate a new builder. Those bulwarks are certainly not going to be easy for a beginner to manage. Whether you chose to do a live steam or a pre recorded video I will watch, although due to time zone differences, I will probably have to watch the replay of the stream.
Hi Greg, Thanks, gives a break from the Santisima Trinidad, Hows things with you m8?
@g-kip I'm ok thanks 😊
@@GregWilson635 i get where your coming from m8, it does feel like another job at times, without the benefit of a decent wage lol, just take things easy, im not going anywhere i will still watch your videos
Keep it up Grant, this comparing is realy interesting.
Hi Martin, thanks
Muito bom 🇧🇷👍
Muito obrigado for the kind words! 🇧🇷
I was going to buy the Zwarte Zee Billings Kit. However, You have definitely put me off!!!
Hi, I was surprised to see it myself, I dont think all the kits are as bad as this one (well I hope not), might be worth checking out reviews for it before you make your mind up.
Likely the best approach and video for a beginner to memorize. I finally understand how to cut a rabet and no longer force planks into position . Thank you
Hi John, Im glad you found the video useful.
Rest up and heal well. You are in my prayers and I am certain I am not alone...
Hi Joe, Im good thanks m8, I apologise for not getting a video out for a couple of weeks, Ive had lots going on at home and work.
next pls
Im going to be doing a complete hull planking in my video due to come out a week on Saturday, I will try to improve on the last video.
J'ai enfin compris merci pour la vidéo
je t'en prie.
Great build! But. Blackening of brass is not an accessible technology for you?
I do blacken Brass on some of my builds, however i chose not to, just peronal preference.
I'm beginning this new hobby. This is very helpful!! Thank you!
Im glad you found it useful, what are you building?
It all comes down to whether you want to assemble a kit of a ship then you want all the timber to be the same. If you are going to build a model of a ship then then the timber size is irrelevant as A good builder can handle the difference in timber size and it all has to be sanded so thickness dose not mater. But yes, I agree with your sentiments about the Billings boat kit is the same as mine.
Hi Stuart thanks for your comments, whilst I agree i would suggest that many newer modellers would not have all the equipment to hand in order to fix the issues, when you purchase a kit (and some can be expensive) you would expect the sizes to be correct, especially in this day and age, maybe im expecting too much lol
Just the guidance I was looking for, thankyou.
Thanks Lee glad you found it useful
Wrong way to plank
Beg to differ
For holding parts square. Especially the framing, a set of 1-2-3 Blocks. The Chinesium ones are quite cheap for what they. All 6 surfaces are ground square to their adjacent sides. Plus they are quite heavy. Clamps. They spring type wooden clothes pins. Being wood they can easily be sanded into special nose shapes. They are also available in minature versions. One extra type of clamp l started using on paper models. Bobby Pins.
Hi, thanks for the info, I will have to check out the blocks, what type of paper models do you make?
@@g-kip Not to active now. Too many other things going on. Models primarily ships and aircraft. Plus some of my own designs. One design was an Arsenal Type ship for a contest and another was for reusable cargo or crewed spacecraft. That had a common propulsion module. The main body was 4"/101.6mm in diameter for 1/72nd scale. The ships were from Digital Navy.
@@mpetersen6 wow impressive selection, Ive seen some paper models here on RUclips, never actually tried it though
@@g-kip There is a gentleman from Poland (1) that is building a T-72 published by Angraf. Amazing work. Articulated tracks. All sorts of goodies. RUclips channel swag_er 1) All the best paper modelers and models are from Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic. Or at least it seems like it. One beautiful thing about paper or card modeling is if you screw up. Just print more parts. Even the preprinted kits always scan the pages for safety's sake. Plus if you want to build a ship in a different scale just print it larger. Or smaller.
Interesting comparison and to be considered in my next purchase, please please turn your music down I want to hear your pleasant voice and info not your competing music tracks. Keep them coming much appreciated. Regards from New Zealand.
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks
Have a great build.
Thanks
Enjoying these comparisons mate. That Billings kit could really put someone off the hobby. I could see it ending up in the bin.
Thanks Greg, if the Billing Boat kit had me my first it would have been my last for sure
OUCH! I can imagine someone purchasing that kit thinking it is entry-level only to be met with that. I could see someone giving up and discarding the kit and having a bad taste in their mouth for model ship building and giving up. Sad...
Hi Joe, my thoughts exactly.
Arching decks is called "Camber"
Thanks Rudolf
Absolute joke that Billings kit.
definately, if I was a beginner I would give up the hobby.
Very interesting comparison, I'm curious to see what happens next.
Thanks Wolfgang,
Great comparison video. Totally agree with you regarding the kits. I have the Billings Boats HMS Victory and the instructions are poor , the rigging instructions are terrible and the wood quality average at best.
Thanks Greg, very dissapointed with Billing Boat.
Well done! This was a fantastic review of all three ships and I totally agree with you. It's almost like the best combination of the three would be OcCre for the wood, AL for the brass details, and Billings to get your money back.
Couldnt have said it better myself lol
Typical Billing kits are so poor. Shame really as they have some of the nicest ships ever built. I’m just finishing off the Calypso from Billing and it’s been a challenge understanding the instructions and missing parts. They tend to have part numbers on the diagrams but the part does not exist on the parts list. I’ve already got the Soleil Royal from AL and San Felipe from Occre as my next build.
Sounds like your future builds coming up is a great line-up and I am looking forward to them!
I definately wont buy another, youve got a nice couple of builds to do Phil, keep you busy for a while
@@g-kip Thanks mate. I wanted a Victory but couldn’t face another Billings and the Caldercraft version is too big. Seems strange the Spanish manufacturers are a bit reluctant to offer the Victory except for Occre’s special edition kit.
@@philsreef746 When Constructo where around they did a lovely HMS victory kit, Whilst I do like the OCCRE version I do think its over priced.
In my experience, models from OcCre have the nicer wood, but building instructions on paper (including 1:1 plans) are often not as detailed and do not come with a stand. In addition, the rigging twine is very fluffy. Artesania Latina usually has only linen wood, relatively thin frames and you always have to paint to get colour, plus there are no plans on paper, but sometimes finer details. Sorry, but the plastic boat from Billing Boats is a no-go (my Bluenose also had plastic parts).
Hi Wolfgang, i was really dissapointed with the Billing Boat kit, definately wont buy another.
@@g-kip I would have to agree 100%. Fantastic review!
Nice comparison. From time to time the music drowns you out. I would be interested in a full build of the OcCre model. Thank you.
Thanks Richard, noted about the music
How about explaining what you are doing instead of playing music. Thank You.

@@g-kip Thank you very much. Look forward to you completing a ship with all the techniques and possible pitfalls highlighted. Hope I’m not expecting too much but I am keen to learn as I’m completely new to wooden ship modelling but, very keen to learn. I find your style very interesting and easy to follow.
It would be nice to see the comparison between the three kits, especially the instructions. Personally I love OcCre, their build videos are very helpful.
Hi John, thanks for your comments, I would have to agree with you, I also like the fact you still get paper instructions with the kits.
@@g-kip Not just any instructions, but amazing color diagrams with easy to follow along pictures. In my limited opinion, I agree that OcCre wins. I just wish it didn't take 14 billion coats of paint when painting over the metal components.
Loose the music and the subtitles, I gave up watching.
Sorry to here you didn't enjoy the Video
@@g-kip the topic was great just the presentation needs attention.
Great video Grant. Here I am over the other side of the world and I have all the same tools. I woold like to see you compare the 3 ships. It's amazing how much difference there is between manufacturers.
