Started small 14 years ago with Jotika's HMS Pickle, but was stumped by faring the hull as the instructions were nowhere near beginner friendly enough for me. So into storage it went. Then last year I became aware of Vanguard Models, specifically the HM Sherbourne. Hugely detailed instructions that are downloadable, multiple RUclips walkthroughs from people who have built the kit and lots of recommendations that this is suitable for beginners. I bought her, took my time and it's been a joy to work on so far with the rigging left to do. Yes, the instructions aren't quite to the level of plank by plank, but the kit contains so many other clever design features that more than make up for this as a beginner. I'm looking forward to returning to the Pickle as that will be an ideal second model (less hand-in-hand, more scratch-building but still small scale) before considering something larger as a third model.

The "Mare Nostrum" model boat shown here has a wrong design. That type of boat does not exist in Mediterranian. Neither Greek nor Turkish boats have the that kind of hull. In order to resist the choppy waters of The Aegean and Mediterranean seas, the fore of typical Mediterranean boat is quite round. The fore is also quite deep and "C" shape.

I can understand why you're less keen on the Billings model, but surely a little research would have revealed that it had a plastic hull and deck. I've built or am in the process of building 3 Billings models so far, one with a plastic hull and 2 with planked hulls, and in each case, I knew whether I was getting a wooden or plastic hull before purchasing. My main gripe would be the instructions or lack thereof. That said, a close examination of the diagrams usually tells you what you need to know. Usually, but not always. I like what you're doing here, but please turn the music down a bit.

Saw the pictures about the Sovereign of the Seas deagostini kit, and had to laugh, its the first kit I bought, 8 years in and still not finished. Currently finishing the top deck with some added details for more historical accuracy. Then the focsle and the finally moving on to the rigging. Listen to this man, DO NOT start big.

Personally I wouldn't recommend these. OcCre planking instructions break all the rules of planking (in contrast to your Marie Jeanne build) AL are known for their inaccuracies of the ships they attempt to produce, and Billing's have the worst materials, I won't call it timber, by far. As well as the plastic blocks and fittings. Better companies include Vanguard, Caldercraft, Maris Stella, Pavel Nikitin, Model Shipways, Drydock, and also Amati's Victory line. The companies highlighted in the video can serve as a basis for scratch or a severe kit bashing.

I can highly recommend looking into the instructions before buying. (if possible). Have already build a few models and good patience. But I have abandond a brilliant model because so instructions were so unclear on important parts that i just gave up on this kid. What I can recommend especially for beginners are kids withe the new instruction line from artisania Latina. These are nearly an plank by plank instruction and very detailed about the rigging. And you will get a nice model. Although some details may not completly historically accurate and an experienced modeller can add more detail. But these kids are great for starting!

given a thumbs down because laser printers are not cheap and you should not have to make so many modifications to the original design. have you contacted the supplier because of all this mods you are having to do. square holes are done with a mortiser. you have turned a 3000 hour assembly into a night mare for me and maybe others who was going to buy this product now i myself am no way going to do so as £1200 is a lot of money just to get stuck and need laser printers ect ect THANKTOU for giving me the heads up on this product with so many floors in in it.

Alternatively. How many 5mm planks will it take at b'heads 6 or 7, the largest measurement. Here it takes 15, forget the decimals, you will never fit the planks so flush that you'll achieve that accuracy, so use your full 5mm width. You will lose 2 to 3mm during the laying of the planks no matter how careful you are. Lay plank 1 along the line of the keel, the garboard. This is not tapered but shaped to meet the cutwater curve of the stem, the upper edge should be almost straight, not curving up the cutwater. Measure length of bulkheads 1, 2, 3 etc and divide by 15 (planks) This will give you the plank width required at these bulkheads. Plot your line along the plank with these widths, join the dots with a shallow curve. Plank from keel up and wale down, alternating as you wish. This is a matter of preference, you may prefer to only plank keel upwards however it makes it easier to measure the gap remaiining to see whether the planks require an adjustment to the taper (you will find a need for adjustment beacuse the shaping and fitting will never be 100% accurate, hence no need to worry about the decimals) Planks above the wale are not tapered. It is useful to alternate starboard and port to ensure the planks are aligned either side (personally I've never had a problem with the skeleton twisting or bending out of shape by completing one side of the hull first!) All of this is hands on woodwork without the need for unnecessary diagrams, I find they are of little practical use due to the slight inaccuracies when laying the planks. First rule of planking-No plank should terminate to a point. Second-no plank should be tapered more than 2/3 of the original width. (kit suppliers often use an incorrect simplified method) For larger hulls additional methods are necessary, drops as you comment and spiling. To avoid having to fit stealers at the stern you will need to buy some wider stock so a plank can be spiled, shaped to fit. As you have found a plank will not lay straight, so it must be edge bent See 'Planking the Winchelsea' by Chuck Passaro on yt. However as well as edge and straight bends it also will twist. Further down the hull the planks will edge bend downwards. Soak the plank and clamp into it's position on the hull, it will set with all necessary bends and twists. This will become particularly evident one third to halfway up the hull, the area with the most complex shapes. You will find this easier still if you replace the 2mm stock basswood with 1.5 (particularly if it's a double planked kit, them you can dispense with the unworkable .6 walnut veneer and replace with 1mm)

Your observations reinforce my long held view that Billing Boats are aiming for the lower end of the market. If you accept that and/or they have a kit that nobody else has then their 'deficiencies' can be tolerated!

Wow, I was planning on getting into this hobby, but the thought of shaping the width of the planks never entered my mind. Length, certainly, but I guess I just assumed the widths of the supplied planks would naturally fit the model. Obviously, having seen your video, it, of course, makes sense that it would be required. Do you have to do this even with the beginner kits?

I've only built 2 Occre kits and working on an AL kit at the moment. I absolutely despise the fact that no plans were given with the AL kit as they want to "save on paper". There are a ton of measurements and explanations missing. Of course I'm an amateur ship builder coming from plastic/wood aircraft the past 20 years, so I've got a lot to learn still.
