I know you're pressed for time, Russ and you're basically just giving those of your viewers who MIGHT be able to travel to these places a 'preview' but man, I wish you could've spent more time in that museum. A person could spend HOURS taking all of it in. I know I would if I could! Ahhh, thanks for the glimpse, anyway!
A big museum with a small look.
This museum introduces the interested to William H Bonney "Billy the Kid" plus the actual Fort Sumner, the Santa Fe Railroad in Eastern New Mexico and the story of the "Trail of Tears" when Dineh, the Navajo people, were forcibly removed from ttheir ancestral homeland and moved to the Pecos River valley at Fort Sumner.
The musuem is far and beyond one of the most important museums and collections of historical records in the southwest.

An afternoon trip!
Great visit to the museum. I would love to spend some time looking at all those old rifles. It was great how you showed your independence to The Man and walked "against the arrows" to get out. If I do that at our safeway, people give me dirty looks. I'm surprised you didn't have to wear a mask inside the museum. In California we have to wear masks inside any store or public building AND follow the arrows. Can't wait to see the next video.
Can't wait till retirement, my plans an RV and the open road..... Knock on wood... Health stays with me and the wife!!;

Hi Russ. Thanks for stopping & showing me around. I was fascinated with that grave site. I was surprised as u sounded on a marker being stolen. Actually those r originals placed by friends of Billy in 1931 & 1940. The very first one was in the old Fort Sumner cemetery off of 60/84 on Billy the Kid Drive. The original marker & bones were washed away in the flood in the late 1880s. U can read more if ur interested on the Roadside America site. The kid was 15 when he passed. It is questionable if he shot 21 people according to some. He was known as 'The Boy Bandit'. Some claim his name was Henry McCarty. Other say he used the alias of William H.Bonney. Hence: Billy the Kid.
Would love it if you would do a close up on the signs, information boards for places that you visit. I could pause the screen and read about the monument or site that you are visiting. Really enjoy your videos.
Funny the cool stuff you find in what looks like the middle of nowhere at all. I like little museums along the trail with history tied to a local area.

I'm from Clovis and I've passed this museum hundreds of times and have never been there or to the grave site. I'll definitely go the next time I visit home.

Who would have expected a pandemic in 2020? No one! You're doing a great job staying positive Russ, and trying to find things to show us. People are staying home again. So many unknowns, for now.

The Old Fort Sumner Museum (where Billy the Kid's grave is located), closed down a couple years ago. The owners auctioned off all the antiques and historical items. Now Chambers of Commerce took the building
The old cemetery is always open to the public as you saw.
That big closed gate you saw after passing the cemetery was the entrance to Bosque Redondo Memorial Center. Its a museum mostly on Native American history. It also has a self guided trail path that leads you on a tour around the Old Fort Sumner layout (no structures are left of Old Fort Sumner just placards marking where buildings once stood). On that path you will be taken to the spot where Pete Maxwell's house was and a "killed here" marker where Billy was shot by Sheriff Garrett.
Great video,In 1970 when I was in the billy to kid museum it was at the same site as the grave and I remember seeing a pair of his boots and a two headed calf,,and I did not see them in your video ,but it was a small museum very different than this video,,times change

Amazing videography. Great music. Beautiful country we live in and many of us never leave our towns. As a Boy Scout I remember visiting Yellowstone and we did a 50 Miler there. Absolutely a treasure of the America’s. Thanks for taking us along.

New Mexico is mostly high desert. To find elevation below 4000 feet is rare. There’s also native grasses everywhere, they just usually don’t look lush and green.

Cool stuff thanks! Pete Maxwell by the way owned the ranch Billy was shot at by Pat Garrett. A great movie of Billy was made in the early 80's with Val Kilmer as Billy. Good movie.
There in Feb /20. Stayed at Sumner Lake state park. Arrived on a Monday. Museum was enjoyed. As a Canadian would love to be down in New Mexico and maybe Texas. Due to COVID Russ will keep enjoying your travels for us. Stay safe

I love history so trips like this are a lot of fun. Since I’m in my early 50’s I’m hoping retirement comes soon but I doubt that..lol

If you go back to Canyon on 60 spend a day at the Panhandle Plains Museum the largest Texas state museum. You drove near by it, downtown left in Canyon
They had to cement the graves over too....wow. Some of those antiques were not antique when I was born 60+ years ago...lol

Fort Sumner was a military fort in New Mexico Territory charged with the internment of Navajo and Mescalero Apache populations from 1863 to 1868 at nearby Bosque Redondo.

Went on a trip to Colorado in June '21 This video is awesome. I remember everything you show in this video . I loved the Museum in town. But From I understand is that Billy is NOT buried there. His body was washed away during some storm and was never found (if you believe Pat Garrett shot him) So the cage was due to theft as you stated on the sign.

Beautiful old single shot pistols and lever action rifles
A little story from my Cannon AFB days. Two guys I was stationed with, took a drive to Ft. Sumner with a keg in the van with the goal to drink beer on the Kids grave. They took the van jack and spread the bars to gain access. It appears the museum replaced or straightened the bars, as of about 7 years ago they were still slightly bent. On the way back to Cannon, they crashed the van (drunk of course) and was busted big time.

Hey Russ, love your videos. Really liked the Billy the Kid museum.
A suggestion. You see a lot of storyboards, information signs etc which would be very interesting to read. Perhaps when you are looking at them you could keep the camera steady on them for just a second or two, so we could pause the video at that point and read them? It would add to the enjoyment a lot.

I've been to both places and the first Museum was Open when i was there. You can watch it on my RUclips if you like, at the time i was using no stabilizer. So it's a little shaky. By the way you missed half the museum when you back tracked.

Since you're enroute, Vaughn is not only a place for intersecting highways but also for railroads. Vaughn is the only place in New Mexico where two major railroads intersect, the BNSF and the Union Pacific.

Pals! There are really 3 graves of William H. Bonnie. They did that to make sure that no grave robers would try to steal the body. Plus its also said that Pat didn't really kill Billy. The other story goes. That Billy himself came to that grave cause there was no body. Billy wrote Pals as a messege to Pat saying were still cool. Thats when Pats horse was stolen!✌
