My wife recently took me to her hometown (for the first time). In Kansas, off the highway down a long road, FLAT. nothing . Here comes a one light town about 10 blocks square. We visited the graveyard and paid our respects to her family members. None of them left in the town today. She showed me the one room schoolhouse and the block that her family lived on. Most of the block had been her whole extended family when she was little. The little gas station was still there, modern ,but still little. I'm a city boy from the NE.and this blew my mind. We been married a while and it helped me to undertsnd her a little better. Different times and different places. Like the travels you take. That little town you passed through made me think of this.

      The
spanish did not "discover" the town. They overran several local Native American villages and enslaved the people. They then forced the locals to build the church and other buildings. The natives were subjected to torture until they converted to catholicism.
starvation and disease wiped them out, whereupon the padres retreated back to the safety of Mexico.

Would always get off at Hatch to take that cut across to Deming too. My favorite part of the drive from MN to Tucson was always those two roads. So grateful to Russ for showing us this. thanks-

I live in Mountainair, too bad you were in such a hurry to get to somewhere else. You missed a lot of good stuff. You drove right by the Salinas Monument headquarters in the middle of town. It was on the left next to the grocery store. The biggest pueblo of the three is 25 miles south of town and well worth the drive. The people of the pueblos mined and refined the salt from those lakes and traded it all over the southwest. Come back sometime when you can stay longer. There is lots more to see here than just the ruins.
