Rural NEVADA: Creepy Almost Abandoned Ghost Towns - Who Lives In Them?

  • Published on Jan 16, 2026
  • I visited several Dying almost Empty Ghost Towns in Rural Nevada, experienced the history, and chatted with locals to find out why Americans choose to live in these haunted forgotten corners of the state, such as Beatty, Rhyolite, Goldfield & Silver Peak.
Nevada is home to MORE Ghost Towns than any other state, with over 600 zip coded locations. What is a ghost town? A city which once had an active community that has since been abandoned by all or nearly all its residents!
The state vast natural resources, particularly gold, silver, and lithium led to the creation of many boomtowns and mining camps over the past 150 years which have since lost a significant percentage of their populations.
But while the majority of them are completely abandoned, there are also a few "living" ghost towns, where people still live, despite few jobs, bad weather, lack of resources, and extreme isolation, with some towns being so remote, the nearest grocery store is 100 miles away!
What is life really like in Esmeralda County & Nye County, Nevada? And who chooses to live in these remote, poor, rural communities? Join me on this epic road trip to find out.

It is pronounced Toe Na Paw. It is one of the real Nevada towns as is Beatty. I live near Reno, which I call California East. Reno and Vegas are not part of the real Nevada. When I want to visit real Nevada, I go East. I would much rather live in small town, rural Nevada, but I am old and need to be closer to medical facilities. I love Nevada. It is my favorite state. The Real Nevada, that is. Great job on the video. You have a new subscriber.

      @danieltoth3900 Year ago +30

@mangomama73 The unique, racing car guy that lives in the house that he designed to look like a large saloon/Persian rug store is the owner of those quotes!
I believe your "why?" is directed at his quote "I don't want to talk about that." That was in response to the question- How do you feel about driving 75 miles to Parump for groceries? I got the feeling he didn't like the drive too much and maybe it's a sore subject because his ex is the reason he moved to Beatty and he still blames her for the fact he has to drive over an hour for a steak to barbecue. If not that exact reason, something along those lines and he has enough life experience to not talk about it right then.

    • @jwise209
      @jwise209 Year ago +19

@danieltoth3900 Also when he asked the differences in Beatty and Vegas and which he preferred guy said "we have to go off camera for that" I mean maybe he just wanted to try to give good answers, but not being interviewed for 30 years you'd think he'd be a little more open to talk lol

The burros are harmless. They are so used to people stopping and feeding them its quite common to see them hit by cars because they have no fear. Tourists see them as a novelty but what they are really doing is putting them in danger. Its quite sad really. We love Beatty no matter how many people come through and judge everything.

I first visited Beatty and Rhyolite in April of 1973, when I was 14. The bicycle club I was a member of [from San Diego] sponsored a five day-long ride through Death Valley and the surrounding area. A dozen of us rode 60-80 miles each day, exploring the same towns you show in your video, plus some you don't show. A "sag wagon" in the form of a late 50's school bus followed the group to pick up anyone who broke down, or simply crapped out because of the heat. It was a great adventure but Nevada was so different in those days before the internet made it known to the world. No more than a couple of hundred people lived in Beatty. Rhyolite was completely deserted. The Exchange Club was the only restaurant [and bar] in town. It looked as if it hadn't changed since the 1940's. We stayed overnight in the Beatty Town Hall, which was a mining-era wood frame building that has long since been torn down. I think I liked Nevada better back then, before the modern world reached it.

      Ghost Town Echoes
In rural Nevada, people come and go,
Mining gold, like shadows on the land below.
Wild animals roam, more than humans fare,
A cool sight to see, in the open air.
Build anywhere, no permits, no laws,
The freedom here gives one pause.
Mining companies left, fires' cruel hand,
Abandoned places scattered across the land.
Yet the town never truly dies, nor lives,
In its quiet solitude, art it gives.
Abandoned cars and buses, houses old,
      Transform into art, stories untold.
Thank you for teaching, for tales that inspire,
Stories of hope, art, peace that never tire.
In this ghost town, where the past intertwines,
With the beauty of art that forever shines.

Been to the Old School Bar. All the history is incredible in that state as well as the hot springs. Your enthusiasm reminded me of how I felt the entire 3 years I lived in Nevada. I miss it! Nevada having over 600 ghost towns is mind-blowing! I've always been drawn to the history of boomtowns and the gold/silver rushes, but this video takes it a step further by exploring the living remnants. What makes someone stay when a town is essentially abandoned?

4 things to be mindful when in Beatty...
    1. Obey the 25 mph speed limit. The Sheriff has no problem pulling you over and writing a ticket and may conduct a 'fishing expedition'.
    2. Be kind to the Burros. Dont feed them nor touch them.
    3. Be sure to visit Smokin J's Bar b Que. Best food in town.
    4. Be sure to fill your tank full.

We used to live in a ghost town in Nevada for a while when I was about 5 or 6. Called Searchlight. It also had wild donkeys. They were descended from the donkeys used for mining ⛏️ back in the day. We had a wood burning stove and a Coleman lantern for light in the evening. Then our grandmother had us come live in her house in Utah. But my siblings and I have allot of unique memories from when we lived there!

I was born & raised in Reno 74 years ago. My mom was an avid ghost town hunter in the 1960's. Unfortunately not much remains of them due to vandalism. Body is a restored ghost town if you want to an abandoned mining town resembled a hundred years ago. Great video. Open pit mining is horrible. It uses cyanide to extract gold. Way cheaper than underground mines of 100 years ago. You can go in one for a few dollars in Virginia City. Remember to have plenty of gas and water in the desert. Watch out for rattle snakes !. 🐍 And open mine shafts.

The house I grew up in had 1908 walls, doors, and fireplace. The steps were a granite slab the length of the porch. All walls were wood as well as the floors. Plumbing and electricity were add ons. Was one of the better neighborhoods when built and bought. Reminds me of the historic buildings.

I'm not sure who runs it now, but there is a little motel with a restaurant run by a Michelin Star awarded chef who use to be in NYC but moved out to the desert. Your tour of Goldfield was just fantastic. Been through it many times. Your video makes me want to go out there again and do a grand tour of it. But your video in itself is definitely one of the very best I have ever seen…of any subject. I will drop a couple of more Nevada locations for you: Hawthorne, Mina, Lovelock, Battle Mountain, Wells, Jackpot…my list is real long. Nevada just ROCKS!

  • @yakhooves
    @yakhooves Year ago +11

Holy shit! In 2021 I drove this route on a 3300 miler road trip around the seven westernmost states! I remember Goldfield and thinking to myself, “what the hell do people DO in this place?! Time definitely forgot about poor Goldfield…” that whole drive is like driving through history’s own refuse pile, full of things from the pioneer days to almost the modern times with almost no rhyme or reason. It was one hell of an experience.

@meaghankelly3887 It’s funny. When I drove through I just thought, “well this place is weird…” but of all of Nevada, I actually have wanted to return to visit! I’m not a gambler or a drinker, so Vegas is a place I just drive through, but I want to go back and just check out Goldfield, any ghost towns, and definitely spend time visiting the Ordinance Museum by the lake! The name escapes me… Hawthorne? There’s a certain bleak beauty about the Nevadan. Mojave that is love to go back and spend time exploring =-)

@SheilaTolley that’s awesome! It’s funny, I kinda sped through Goldfield three years ago, but after this video, I intend to return just to explore! I really loved the long road trip I took with my dad and golden retriever, and now a friend wants to go too, so he and Shadow the golden retriever will saddle up once more in June, and head back into the desert!

I lived in close by Pahrump for the last 15 years and just moved far far away. I use to hang out in Beatty and Goldfield on occasion with acquaintances and had a lot of adventures… it’s an interesting place. In rural Nevada, people come and go, mining gold, like shadows passing over the land.
It's cool to see more wild animals than humans everywhere.
It's amazing that you can build anywhere without permits or laws.
Yes, the mining companies left, fires burned, and many places were abandoned, but the town never truly dies nor lives,
It's incredible to see abandoned cars, buses, and houses transformed into beautiful works of art that can last forever.
Thank you for educating us and for sharing the locals' interesting stories full of hope, art and peace that money cannot buy.

This is one of the best Nevada travel videos ever. You took the time to talk to people who live in these towns other than a quick drive through. So many travel videos are a shallow treatment of hamburger stands, coffee shops and other meaningless, uninformative things. AI can't compete with hearts that adore
Life's richness, the warmth of the sun,
    Real experiences, second to none.
No need to fly; adventure’s nearby,
Under the sky, explore and try.
New mountains, cultures, cuisines to glean,
Ghost towns and deserts, informative and keen.
Engage with locals, hear their tales,
    Wisdom where history prevails.
Trees and people thrive in America’s embrace,
There’s beauty to be found, even in this isolated place.

Your caption caught me!, I was born and raised in Henderson, NV, grew up going with my grandparents on weekends to the mines, either in GoodSprings mining district or Searchlight
Slept in an old Army cot in a sleeping bag under the stars most weekend nights. Granfather cooked breakfast in a dutchoven over a mesquite fire , bacon, eggs and buckwheat pancakes. We went all over NV checking all his gold mines. Best years of my life! The only creepy places Ive been to are all the big cities recently with all the crime! No better place the open Nevada desert.

Goldfield is such a trip. About 10 years ago, I was driving back from Death Valley and passed through Goldfield after dark. There's very few lights on, but you can see the shadows of all the abandoned buildings...and then I drove by the Goldfield Hotel. It was stunning to see something so big also be so dark and creepy! I've since passed through a few times and stopped to wander around and take a few photos. Definitely didn't run into the locals. They were probably like, "Oh no, not another tourist with a camera"

I remember catching a LTR bus from Beatty Nevada to get to Reno. I caught a Greyhound from Reno to Sacramento, and another one from Sacramento to Fresno California. @princessunicorn669 no, I did that in 1979. I was leaving my late husband because of his abuse and someone drove me to Beatty and the Exchange Club, and I bought my bus ticket in there and waited till the bus showed up around 11 or 11:30 pm. I had never seen casinos open at all hours of the night before. I was only 25 at the time, and really hadn't experienced life.
