I live in Southern New Mexico! My husband was raised in Tularosa! We now live on the border of the Mecalero reservation! In the mountains! New Mexico is the best place to explore ever!
The little gas station in San Antonio has some delicious fudge and ice cream. Also the Buckhorn Tavern there is known for their green chili cheeseburgers because the owner beat Bobby Flay in a cook off.
Thank you for posting this video! I'm from Alabama, but our family lived in Magdalena from 1967 to 1974. My parents were Southern Baptist Missionaries to the Navajo Indians of the Alamo Reservation 27 miles northwest of town. I brought my wife and daughter out there on vacation in 2007. It was very nostalgic to see the home where we once lived as well as where I went to school. We moved back home to Alabama in 1974, but New Mexico never left me. It still holds a special place in my heart. I want to come back to visit after I retire, which is just three years away. There's so much I want to show my family that we didn't get to do during our last trip!
I loved this video. I am from this area. My dad was born and raised in the Magdalena area and my grandparents and mom lived in Datil. I went to school in San Antonio and Socorro. This is my home stomping grounds!
Socorro is home of great free New Mexico Mining Institute huge display rocks, minerals, old mining tools and gear. Also near Magdalena is the old Kelly mine.
That's the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech is the short name). The Mineral Museum is located in the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources and it is outstanding!
Used to live 20 miles down a dirt road from Magdalena in a ghost town called Riley (originally Santa Rita) population of 3.. your video almost made me miss New Mexico.. almost.
Trinity site is open to the public twice each year, the first Saturday in October and April. We were there about 5 years ago. Amazing place, the house they used as command post has letter signed by the scientists that were there that day!

Hi from Ireland. I plan on visiting N.M. in a few months. So I will be joining you on your drives to see where I will visit while there. Gracia's amigo. ☘️
The small town Magdalena seemed so lonely and empty of movement of people. Contrasted with the cold grey skies intensified it. Great video tho an I'm enjoying the journey. 👍👍😊
NM has so many diverse landscapes and terrains, I love living here. If you have a desire for exploring there are thousands of amazing locations through the entire state and ranked best sunsets in the world.
Hi Russ. I came all the way down 380 from Rt 25 No. and stopped at Carrizozo. Visited an interesting antique shop on the main drag and they were setting up a coffee shop in the middle of the building. Ate lunch down the street at a cool cafe.
Hilton was born and raised in San Antonio. His first real hotel was in El Paso. Sam Young gave him a loan during the depression, from then on Sam was his banker.
@@shawnmeyer2788 - That is correct! Hilton's parents owned a store San Antonio. Conrad Hilton worked in his father's store, then worked for a bank in Socorro. You can still visit the Cisco hotel. There is a museum there but I don't believe they rent rooms any more.
20:03 - WOW! The biggest train i ever saw was in Iowa, going over the mighty Miss. river. It looked ENDLESS, an i sat there eating my dinner and watching out the window, just totally fascinated!
Hi Russ! I’m fascinated by watching a video of yours and discover I’ve been there during my trucking days! In fact I’ve traveled the same exact route YOU did in this video many times! Watching videos like this one will keep me patient until I can go full time soon! Thanks for the memories! Safe travels! ~Jim~
My father worked on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos 1944-1946. He was at the Trinity detonation. Before he left, he told my mom to look south (from Los Al) at 5:30 that July morning. She saw the glow.
Ugh i wasnt expecting to get choked up so much by your nice video. Its tajen me back to my road trips in that area over the years. New Mexico is an awesome place for lots of reasons. I took Amtrak thru to California once and fell in love, tried living in ABQ a spell (crime central lol) and vacationed there every year for ten yrs. Sigh. Now im in the big PNW. TY SO MUCH for a ride down memory lane. White Sands is other worldly. Have you been to the Petrified Forest in AZ? Same extraordinary kinda place.
Hi Russ, thank you for taking us on this great trip. I bet that blueberry pie you bought in Pie Town was delicious! It looked good! Just a side note, in case any of your viewers might be interested in reading some "historical fiction", there is a Trilogy written by Michael McGarrity about 3 generations of cattle ranchers who homesteaded in the San Andreas mountains and much of the story/stories take place in the Tularosa Basin. The author writes about the Trinity first Atom bomb and a lot about life on a ranch in that area. Great reading. Three books beginning with "Hard Country" which starts in the late 1880's, 2nd book is "Backlands", the 3rd is called "The Last Ranch", which includes the Trinity blast. OK, thanks.
Russ, I enjoy your relaxed vibe as you travel. 👍 If interested, we live along Route 66 in central Oklahoma. You might just drive by our 🏡. We have been adding Route 66 signage to the historic roadbed here. About 5 months ago, I designed a sign and the County paid & installed the sign about how PAUL McCARTNEY stopped here back on August 5, 2008. It’s a pretty cool 😎 cool sign.

Russ. Where you turned south in Carizozo if you turned north about 2 miles up the highway is road 349 East to White Oaks. A cool place to check out. Also you did miss out in San Antonio, two great green Chile burger places. I made this trip about 10 years ago your bringing back good memories. Thanx
Apparently, there were no actual explosive volcanoes that formed the Valley of Fires. The molten lave simply flowed straight out of the earth from fissures. This type of volcanic activity is also why New Mexico and Arizona are rich in copper deposits. And those lava fields are Geologically quite recent.
Right, Apollo it reminds me of what is happening in Iceland now. Volcano started March 20, then a new fissure opened and t he lava flowed down to mare valley. In meantime the Bob Volcano filled the valley it was in. And more fissures opened. Growing substantially. Several locals filming.
23:33 - water + sand + nutrient = great for small nuts (peanuts no, pistachios yes) and grapes..if the nitrogen in the soil is fixed. a good rookery can help with that! I wonder what the wines taste like there, I'll bet more white than red, but i've been wrong before.
New Mexico has the 2nd largest super volcano in the US, the Valles Caldera. That lava erupted about 7000 years ago, it is called the Carrizozo Lave Flow from one little cinder cone for 30 years non-stop.

Also good cheeseburgers at the Owl Bar. That was the closest bar to Trinity site so Manahatten people went there.
I can also attest to the Green chili cheeseburger at the Buckhorn. Mmm. Wishing I was there.
@@hhawg1 Have you tried the cheeseburgers at Sparky's in Hatch NM where green chilies are grown? Super!

Last time I stayed there was exactly the same, no one around and freezing cold. The saloon there is a nice little joint though, nothing flash.
❤️ Loving the trip so far!
On a 75 degree day out on the White Sands is like 90 degrees from the reflected light. For some reason snow doesn't reflect heat as much.
Was stationed at Holloman AFB from '83 to '89. Took the family all over that area in a pickup camper. Enjoyed every single mile.

Hi Russ,
Fantastic video!! You should consider doing a whole series just in New Mexico? So much to see.
P.S. you skipped over Datil NM.
Yes, I would personally like to see more of NM with Russ. :)
You ate the whole pie 🥧🤪....holy pie town, it looked really good...the road trip is just getting started, 👌 travel safe.
In the late fall and winter, the green disappears from Valley of the Fire and the lava beds are joltingly solid black for miles and miles.
