Model T Runabout Torque and Horsepower Dyno Run!

- @MerlinsOldSchoolGarage is at it again! After the engine swap he puts the 1915 Model T Runabout on the dyno for a second test to find how much horsepower and torque it gained... or lost? Will this engine swap be a win for the model T or an embarrassment?
Never seen anyone that knows so much about so many different types of engines. It's always interesting to see what you will be working on next!!
Nice HP gain from 13.1 HP to 36 HP with all the upgrade parts on the
model T.
Very cool.
👍🇺🇸✌️
That's as much an indication that the first motor was sick, as much as it indicates the worth of the upgrade parts. A stock model T engine is rated at 20 HP. Old Henry's data was a bit rubbery, but getting only 13 HP shows something is wrong.
@@keithammleter3824
Henry's HP rating was from the crank not from the wheels.
@@FJB8885 ; Yes, I understand that - it is the standard way to measure engine power - but you simply don't loose that much in the gears and differential. Modern hypoid differentials have better than 90% mechanical efficiency. The Model T diff had a non-hypoid design, so its efficiency would be better - around 96%. The gearbox used planetary bevel gears so it would be around 98% efficient. If he tested in top gear, that is straight through, so better than 99% efficient. So with 13.1 HP at the wheels, the engine output at the flywheel was only 13.1 divided by 0.95 i.e., 13.9 HP. That is simply WAY too low for an engine rated at 20 hp, and simply way too low for this 2.9 litre / 177 cu in engine even with its low compression ratio and poor breathing design.
@@keithammleter3824 The plot from 1922 (apparently from 1918 data) shows
12hp/81ft-lbs/20mph @ 800rpm and 20hp/65ft-lbs/40mph @ 1600rpm.
The plot also notes 3.63:1 gear ratio and 30x3.5 tires which makes me think the
measurements were taken at the wheels. It also suggest this modern dyno test
never spun up the engine very far.
@@mknm1349 ; Torque foot-pounds is calculated by multiplying power (in HP) by 5251 and then dividing by RPM. So, for 1600 RPM, 20 x 63025 / 1600 equals 65.6 foot-pounds - close enough to the specified 65 foot-pounds. So the specified power and torque output was at the engine flywheel as has long been standard practice for car engines.
You can check this with a number of online calculators.
If torque was defined to be that at the road wheels, it would be about (allowing for transmission losses) 20 x 0.9 x 5251 x 3.63 / 1600, i.e., 214 foot -pounds. Tyre diameter does not affect power or torque.
The road wheels could not be turning at 1600 RPM as that would mean the car going at over 140 miles per hour. But 1600 dived by 3.63 equals 40 MPH which is what a T was capable of.
It isn't clear from the video but it appears he slowly increased throttle until the dyno indicated power falling off, then slowly throttled down, which is the normal way to do it. It was probably running on only three cylinders when throttled up.
Merlin, I'm looking forward to what comes next, as your collection grows with the model A's and Ts! You've got our attention to the blurred out secret thats been in your garage for awhile now! Any chance of letting us know anytime soon? Your content never disappoints. It's always been a pleasure to see what come next! Till then, see you soon.😊
Wow, what great dyno results! You built a monster Merlin! In fact you can name that little T 'Merlin's Monster'!
That's impressive. Tripled the horses. Quadrupled the fun!
Very nice improvement on HP's. 1915 technology with some modern parts & ingenuity for a good build. It's not leaking oil, it's sweating horsepower. Merry Christmas to you & yours from me & mine.
Congrats on your mention in Road and Track ( online edition). I was looking at my feed on my phone and came across it. Well done Mr Merlin
Love it merlin! Tripled the horsepower on the rig. What an improvement. Great job . Happy holidays to you all.
The model T what an amazing simple vehicle compared to today’s machinery, both doing the same exact task of transporting our butts from point A to point B thanks Merlin, for sharing these experiences with us
These Model T cars look like a lot of fun, great video thumbs up
I suspect some ‘Merlin Foolery’ when the camera ‘froze’ (wink, wink)… the frozen frame and the look on Brian’s face says it all. “Wow me with the Model T wizardry there Magical Mythical Merlin!”
I love the collection sir… and the content.
Many Blessings!
Really enjoy your old school style, explaining as you work is an added bonus.Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and yours.I have a brother in Apache Junction, told him about your you tube.
You're living the life Merlin!
Enjoyed watching and listening to you Merlin! The Model T runs great! Merry Christmas y'all!
Fun to see the power improvements! And Merry Christmas to you and yours!
My Father , and I restored a bunch of T's back in the 60's / 70's...Not to HP them but back to factory spec's...Some are now in Museums. One thing we used to do to help cranking them was to put the driver-side wheel up on a jack...leave the trans in gear... crank the motor ( hand crank cars only )...The added drivetrain would add a kind of flywheel effect allowing one to really spin the motor. The practice was stopped when I sent a fully restored 26 out the garage...across the street into our neighbor's garage door. Hmmmm.... 36Hp running " T "...Will need to put a 9" in the rear next...Then replace the trans with something stronger..? And the " Hot Rod " was born... :) Take Care... Enjoy your show..!
Thanks Brian for testing it,and McKay for being the auto-starter when needed too.
Merry Christmas to all, and a Happy New Year !
I really enjoy the Model T videos. So much fun - and great work! I have worked on my late Grandfather’s Model T. Home-made belt - no joke, when I started working on the Model T, it had a Gentleman’s belt (jeans belt) that was laced together. I tried to save it, but it was too dry rotted.
Just came across your channel. I have watched many Model A and T videos, but don`t know why I haven`t come across yours before.
Watched the first T dyno, then the 2nd one with the new engine. Quite an improvement in HP. You make it all seem so easy and simple.
Merry Christmas from my Wife and I to you and your family.
It`s all because of Jesus, our Lord and savior.
Charlie
Thanks Merlin, that's a huge percentage increase, now you have a drivable car. Merry Christmas.
My Favorite old car guy who can fix about anything old. It's really interesting watching you. Thanks for taking the time.
I've never seen a lifting eye stuck in a spark plug hole for engine hoist interface, but there it is--I guess that's how they did it back then, isn't it? Gave me the willies watching it, but that's just a lifetime of goofing around with newer stuff with aluminum heads talking, I suppose. That's probably what the shop manuals specified back then: "Take a No. 2 lifting eye and stab the bugger into the No. 3 spark plug hole"
I read somewhere that the model T held the record for acceleration for the first 10 feet of travel from a dead stop until the 427 Cobra came along.🙂
Funny. I heard the model T held the world auto speed record until the first Chevy was manufactured .
@@tomstulc9143 Nah, Chevy still has yet to beat a T in acceleration, heck they have issues with 5yr old girls on bikes
@@candle86 lol reminds me back in the time when the new pollution economy economy Chryslers of the eighties came out. Police complained they couldn't catch a fat man on a bicycle in them. It was quite a let down from the sixties and seventies huge 440 magnum New Yorkers. Ford 390 police interceptors era. Our small town had a Pontiac Bonnevile with a HO 455. My Brother bought it and it's still sitting out at our family farm. Those were the days. I had a 68 GTO HO 400. Cars were fast chrome was thick and girls had big bumpers.
I'm kind of busy right now but when Merlin drops a video 8 minutes ago I'm going to
Drop what I'm doing and watch it, because I can..
Way to go Merlin, just saw an article in Road and Track. Streaming.....go man go!!
Thought the first dyno run was 12.9 HP AND 89.1 ft/lbs of T ya finished with over a 2.5 time the horsepower. That would put a big smile like the one on yours on almost anybodies face. Glad to see you are having fun. great video’s.
Nice upgrade to 36.5 hp and wishing you a very merry Christmas.
This has to be the coolest Dyno video on RUclips 😊 thank you for uploading best regards from Sweden 😊
Brother you put together and do some of the very coolest stuff on the web. Every episode is a treat. In fact I would even say that I like your channel as much as I like our channel. LOL. TY

Awesome video Merlin!!! I wanted to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years!!!!
Thanks for all the great content during this past year. 💖 Looking forward to a spectacular new year of adventures. 💥💯
Merry Christmas 🎄
That's a beautiful Model T! 36.5HP!! Great job Merlin. The early Scouts had about 4.5 turns lock to lock making them much easier to steer than early Jeeps, quick course corrections made you look like you were sending semaphore signals!
Merry Christmas to all involved in this channel! Love si appreciate your work!❤
Always fun stuff. Merry Christmas to you and the family.
What a fun video this was on the Model T. 36.5 is a good number for it. Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!
Merry Christmas to you too MOSG crew !
I was most impressed with the stock torque numbers. not sure if I'd change it.
Was the change to the Aluminum pistons the cause of the torque loss? Interesting almost 3 X’s the HP. Very cool!
Exactly what I was thinking. In my mind the heavy pistons would compare to the flywheel on old farm machinery. The HP gain was a surprise to me as well.
I am impressed! I enjoy watching and learning about the things you do. Merry Christmas 🎅🎄🤶.
Great job Merlin. Happy New Year!. From New Brunswick, Canada.
Great job guys. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄. Thank you 😊
This has been a fun little series. This is like watching the og hot rods!!! Being 37 I never got to see the originals until now, so thanks for this opportunity. Merry Christmas to all!!!
