I had never heard of Cory Wong or Vulfpeck and I'm blown away. That is some insane, tight, in-the-pocket, funk rhythm that is just off the chain amazing. Thank you Reverb! Keep 'em coming.
Saw him and Vulf at ACL this year. They opened with Cory Wong (the song) and I have never seen people start dancing that quickly. They honestly outplayed RHCP which says something
JPaul Music First of all, listen to their EPs, a lot of their best work on there. But if you wanna hear Cory Wong you should listen to The Beautiful Game, and if you like that then maybe check out Mr. Finish Line. And if you like those, you can listen to The Thrill Of The Arts (no Cory Wong on this one, though). Hope this helps
Even if it’s not my style, I’m loving these videos from lesser known but really interesting guitarists like Cory Wong and Isaiah Sharkey. I grew up on the big names of classic rock, but young guitar players need some new inspiration. Keep it up Reverb!
Agree. Reverb’s content is soooo much better than it has to be for the channel to serve its basic purpose, but they do it anyway which awesome and tells me there are really passionate people doing these.

I remember being a 16 year old and locking myself in my room for 6-8 hours a day for weeks to practice funk style guitar playing . It really took me a while to get a hang of it, the whole getting used to only letting the notes/strings you want to play sound while you're strumming the whole thing constantly and separating the left and right hand rhythmically, but i got so proud when i did. It's really versatile and you can do a lot of fun stuff in that style.
Damn I love this dude - absurdly competent "rhythm" guitarist, with a palpably humble self-awareness at all times. Peck was right to name a song for him, and his parents were right to name him after the song, as has been said.
It's nice to see someone playing like this. Looks like he's angling the pick the opposite direction that most people do, instead of leaning towards the bridge "\" as a traditional right-handed player does; the pick attacks the strings like "/" (I've been told it's essentially lefty-style picking angle on a righty setup). Which really lends to the fast-strumming and funky Strat-style he's got. I also do this, it's extremely hard for me to play funk rhythms and feel loose if I try it the other way.
Recently saw them at Red Rocks as an opening act, and was only a little familiar with them. Cory's amazing tone and tight playing caught my ear immediately. Awesome show.
i use to play funk exclusively but i got more into fusion the last ten years, about to go jam some funk now. didnt realize how much i missed it until they were all in the groove together.
Cory wong making his rhythmic stuff intentionally "sloppy" is like the equivalent to when girls style their hair to look sloppy and it's so freaking genius
That hand technique is beautiful with the precision I've mostly only seen it with ukulele or basically pickless, love how he knows he doesn't have to overcompensate and can mute as much as he does reminds me that maybe there can be people in small genres with unique skills that get very popular.
And this dude doesn’t hold back a BIT. Watch him in the video for Hero Town. When I saw those faces, I instantly thought wow this Cory Wong know how get down holy shit!

These kind of hand motions are used in Flamenco too - usually in Rumba. You make the hand as loose as you can and practice flunging it across the strings in rhythm.
I've lived in Minnesota my entire life and never heard of this dude til now. I'm now absolutely pissed that I've been denied this for most of my existence.
I just sold a 62' AVRI, gonna buy the Blue Cory Wong Strat. I've always been good at the right hand funk stuff, but Cory takes it to a different level. Inspiration baby.

@@rayhoodoo847 4th Position Strat. Fender amp. Super dry signal. A compressor might help. The tone is mainly from the 4th strat position and how you play it.
I’ve been trying to play this type of funk rhythm for the last few weeks, after decades of ‘other genres,’ and I’m constantly surprised at how challenging this stuff is. It looks simple, because of the repetition and there aren’t lightning fast solo bits. But the right hand “motor” and syncopation with the left hand muting all those strings…. Difficult. I’m even having problems just holding onto the pick. Trying a dozen different picks, and even bought little gripper adhesive thingies to help, but I’m not there yet. Not yet..
Haha…I know the struggle man. I’ve messed around with funk guitar for a while now, but I’m nowhere near Cory Wong’s level. I’ve been using Dava Grip Tip picks for funk rhythm (I believe Cory uses the same pick) and I put adhesive grips on the pick as well which really helps a lot. It’s difficult to get a consistent attack across the strings with both up and down strokes. To help with hitting notes on the right beat, I’ve found that practicing accents on different beats seems to help. Reverb actually posted a video of Cory Wong’s practice routine where he talks about this.
Whenever there is a discussion of a guitarists picking technique, I always wait for them to say they used to play drums. If you want to play funky guitar, and have that strong picking hand, start on drums. The hi-hat and ride cymbal with build you a legendary picking hand.
Hello Reverb, i have one question, is that a 68 Vibrolux Cory is playing through and is that his go to amp or did he use it just for this video because you had it around. Thank you very much.

Don't judge a book by its cover. This band has an amazing funky groove. While having the fashion sense and look of the IT department.
they are an amazing band, amazing musicians, but they look like they hired a stylist to dress them up.
Yeah thats not VULFPECK thats just some reverb musicians backing up cory for this vid
It sounds awesome, but that drummer is the goofiest looking son of a bitch I've ever seen.
Not Reverb musicians. The drummer and keys are local guys from Minneapolis, where Cory is from.

Let's be honest, Cory's right hand technique is good, but the true power comes from his incredible funk face.
Just as that drummers face I love it
Everyone gets a stank face with Cory Wong!
Sometimes I have to look away. I cannot help but think its the same face he makes during intercourse
@@bueller8278 WHY THINK ABOUT THAT?

Cory Wong's got clock hands. Tight pocket feel 100% of the time.
agreed. he's making it look easy just like fooling around but everything he's playing is record quality
He used to be a line drummer, and played in clubs in Minneapolis for years. Years of timing practice paying off.
