More than the fact that this is a solid exercise tip, I’m super impressed with how well Cory can articulate and explain these intangible topics

Watching this knowing fully well I can't strum with that speed and consistency but still locked in to learn, it's like a chicken watching the birds flying overhead.

This exercise really reminds me of Victor Wooten and Anthony Wellington's rhythm/tempo lesson from their DVD! Wonder if Cory took inspiration from that, know he's a huge Wooten fan! Such a great lesson.

Victor Wooten has been teaching this for years :) not only his DVD but on different interviews and lessons all over youtube, plus his music camps. Highly likely that Cory has seen it.

I've seen this advice already, and it's a great one, but I still struggle to play in time even with all the accountability in the world. Nothing some good practice can't fix tho! Started to actually practice with a metronome for a week and it's already way better that it was
Also, playing into a DAW and actually seeing what you've played on a grid helps me understand when I rush (i almost never drag), the hard part is to connect what you see on the screen with what you feel while playing. I almost never know that I'm rushing while playing, but i think I found that feeling when I'm spot on. I will use this technique when I'm ready for sure, thanks Cory!

Really great stuff Cory. Thank you. Agree. Particularly when I record, I'll take a 120 bpm song and then record it in 60, and it allows the room to add a ton of swing if you want. Less grid, more bump and run.

Oh this is really brilliant man. Thank you. A topic that is basically never talked about or at least not very often. As a drummer for 25 years this really is a deep but important cavernous hole. I realized very similar things in the studio, which I know most recording musicians do, that sometimes you think you're playing something fast or slow at a particular tempo, perhaps because your limbs are moving fast but you listen back and it's almost astonishing that you were that off the mark. Perception of time in different environments is so crucial but can also be so elusive.
