Kasey, after two years of watching and enjoying your channels - this is my first (and probably only) comment: just get an Apple M1 silicon computer and your life will be complete. It won't matter anymore what camera you have or food you eat....you can thank me later.
I may have missed it somewhere but if you’ve updated your R5 to the latest firmware (1.5.2), you’ll see much improvement in overcoming the twigs in front of the birds and the eye focus is now much stickier.
Use C-Log3 in this 3rd mode compressed (light IPB) is less bitrate but easy to edit, the quality is practically lossless. Additionally, you can use cropp mode, thanks to which you will have even greater range
I've learned to put up with the C-Log 3 stutters. It's not that bad on my PC, which is pretty juiced up. Once you render the video, the end result is glorious. The new firmware v.1.5.2 that just came out is supposed to improve the AF. I haven't installed it yet because I always wait for other people to find problems first. But ... I can feel the Canon Dark Side beginning to well up within you. Embrace it. As for manual override when in AF: just use the focus ring; that should work. I never had overheating issues with my R5 and R6. I did a 2 1/2 hour live stream on the R6 once. It gave me an overheat warning after 1:15 but it kept streaming for another 1:15 until the call was over. I did another similar live stream call with the R5. Same length of call; no overheat warning at all. I'll be shooting both cameras in Arizona for a week this May. That should be a test.
Yeah John, Canon Log 3 with Cinema Gamut is very nice. I edit using the cheap entry level M2 MacBook Air and have no issues with any 4K footage. I don't 'even convert to Prores 422 to edit for the channel... Cheap and easy. I also use the manual focus on with the 800mm most of the time, accept for squirrels... need af for them ;)
No problems with mine and I shoot in the desert as well as tropics pretty often. Just got back from shooting in Punta Cana. I have shot at 123 degrees in the desert as well
The M1 macbook pro base model is a game changer, time to sell one of those pricey lenses and pick one up Kasey! This guy's comment on that video says Cannon 8k video is editable on the new mac's though...
I keep tracking and eye AF on the front shutter button and I assigned a back button to single point auto focus. That way you can pick out a subject in a busy background on those times when you need to. I also have a backbutton set up just to drop the shutter speed and the iso. The back buttons will override the front button if you hold one of them down 1st. That way I'm ready for anything. You're getting into wildlife from the video end but I bet you'll be taking still photos soon!

You can program the Canon R5 so you have the normal focus mode integrated in the eye af. Everytime the eye fails you can help the eye just a little so it gets the animal back in focus.
@@MusaonYT basically you have to stick the eye af to a button. So everytime you press and hold that button you activate the eye af. @@MusaonYT sometimes when my camera can't find a animal in the picture I just direct the eye af manually to that exact point and then the cam snaps and follows it perfektly. Basically in this method you are using both focus modes at the same time.

Have you tried out the 1.4x teleconverter on the fuji 70-300 yet? I know you don't like TCs but everyone keeps banging on about how good that lens is with it.
If you can deal with (or enjoy) Canon's insane design faux pas, then it's undeniable that the R series produces some really, really good looking images/footage. Personally I cannot deal with them. Hey, want to use a D-Pad to go to the previous/next image in preview? Well, there's no D-Pad, but we've included a joystick now! Except you can't actually use it for the aforementioned purpose... Oh, want to slap a teleconverter on your 100-500? You can! Well, except it _physically_ won't let the lens pull in below 300mm... Want to dual record proxies? You can! Well, only on the R5, and only when recording 8K RAW. Want an easy way to capture custom WB? You can! Well only on the R3, and only in stills mode. You want to save video presets to C1,2,3? You bet! Well, not on the R6, just the R3 and R5. Want a camera that doesn't overheat after 20 minutes? We fixed that with firmware (not really), and the R3 doesn't overheat at all! It never ends
I'm so tired of my Panasonic S1 and its shortcomings and ridiculous size. I'm ready to upgrade and really like the R5 but comments like this remind me why the R5 might be be another headache in the long run. The Sony A1 is really the only answer to all of our questions....
The R5 has a wheel to scroll through settings / pictures instead of a D-pad and don’t have to use the joystick. So not sure you have ever held an R5 in your hand. 😂
When editing R5 10-bit on my ancient 10-year old PC, I render proxies (which goes surprisingly fast). Recently got an M1 MacBook Pro (least powerful version I could get) and it's a game-changer. It's buttery smooth on an M1 anything.. Air, Mini, whatever. For short clips, I never see overheating. Only time I saw overheating issues was extended shooting in 95F/35C+ temperatures. To be fair, though, I usually run out of space on the CFexpress long before it has a chance to overheat. RIP free disk space. Transcode to something sane for long term storage. I think most of the overheating comes from that CF express card. Those who have removed it and shoot to external recorders (Atomos Ninja V) can record indefinitely in a non-insane codec. I prefer to keep my setup minimal, though.
It probably is, that and the crazy non-heatsink design a youtuber found. But I've had CFExpress cards get painfully hot in my USB3 card reader on top of my PC.

I can edit Sony's 4k 120p 10 bit 4:2:2 footage no problem. My computer isn't the problem, it's Canon's terrible codecs. Even this guy got the New M1 Ultra to freeze with Canon R5 footage ruclips.net/video/LTVdfrNdsSM/видео.html
@@cameraconspiracies For the R5, you specifically need hardware accelerated support for HVEC 4:2:2 10-bit. Currently no AMD and Nvidia GPUs have that specific feature. Since those GPUs don't support that, it's incredibly slow and falls back to hitting the CPU. The newest generation of Intel CPUs, (i9-12900k for example) as long as it's a model with an integrated GPU do have specific support for HVEC 4:2:2 10-bit. Any laptop with an Intel Xe GPU can do this as well. As far as I know, the only other option, as you mentioned is the Apple M1 series. Which, are genuinely incredible systems too.
How about a link to the footage you can't scrub through? What's your editor? I have a MacBook Air M1 and PC with i9-10900K. On a lightweight generic series of tests the PC was 33% faster. On my own load test the Mac took 53 minutes, the PC 16 minutes, each computer enabled to use 8 cores in parallel.
If your main complaint about the R5 is editing the C-Log 3 files, you just need a new computer. You spend enough money on other stuff for your channel. Have someone build you a custom setup from components, it'll probably cost less than off the shelf.
Have you tried using proxy files? I have never used canon video files, but whenever I choke up a computer I rather take some time up front to convert the files to proxy files to have a smoother editing experience
Nope, you were spot on. I don't care how nice the pictures are. Any camera that overheats under "certain conditions" is a POS. $4k for something that might not turn on when you need it is a no go. I don't see how anyone who is serious about spending this kind of money on something would even consider it. Like buying a Ferrari you can drive fast.. but only for a little bit. Ya, no thanks. The R5c is a completely different story. Is it perfect, no, they never are, but watch the market become flooded with R5's once the R5c is released. Buyers remorse will get a whole new meaning.
r5c doesnt have ibis, r5 is a glorious shooter cam with splash of high quality video. thats its purpose, otherwise buy a komodo or something else that fits your needs
@@cameraconspiracies You must being on a serious potato! JK LOL. I shoot everything in Clog3 in the Super35 crop mode on my R5. An hour worth of footage optimizes in about 1-1.5 hours for me. I usually just set it to optimize on one of my rigs and go so other stuff until its done. The 8k I dont even bother with even my beast computer struggles with that crap.
hi kasey, looks like you need a newer more capable computer.. seems like all cameras nowadays are using uneditable files on older less ram equipped machines… i upgraded to a very reasonable m1 pro macbook pro… only cost 13 million 500 billion europounds… i still can’t edit my r6 files coz i’m rubbish at editing.. lol.. great vid as usual…
@Romain Provost Yes, and I'm shooting in 60fps in CLOG 3. I have a ryzen 9 5900x 12 Core Processor with 32gb Ram. I have also recorded in H265 on the Ninja V and their codec seems to function faster too. Everyone talks about how terrible editing R5 and R6 footage is, but I have never had an issue. It's about having a quality GPU and CPU.
Canon keeps sounding better and better...wait what am I saying??? I left Canon for Sony because of the C hammer, now, because of those affordable 600 and 800 I am being wooed back. But I think I will wait for the R5 mark 2...maybe the sizzle will be fixed by then.
RUclips marketing man. Casey dose not give a crap about you all he cares is his paycheck. We live in a selfish world very little people truly helping eachotherout.
I can edit 8k raw really smoothly on my fairly basic PC, you just need to set DaVinci up to use your graphics card to debayer the footage in preferences, and then you'll want as much RAM as you can afford. I have 32 Gigs and I still have to close my chrome tabs to edit the raw file smoothly since chrome uses too much ram lol
Well daaaah RAW is way easier on the pc than normal codecs. Same thing with the standard ALLi vs IPB. Uncompressed video and audio are not demanding to edit because cpu and gpu don't need to deal with the decompression in real time on the timeline.
The issue is that no PC GPU by Intel, AMD, or Nvidia hardware accelerates H.265 4:2:2. They only accelerate the non-matrix math modes, 4:4:4 and 4:2:0. Alternatively, Apple has had dedicated chips for H.265 4:2:2 since the first T2-equipped Mac.
@@Rosyna I'm not sure but i think intel had those same codec chips in some of their earlier cpu's. I think i saw a video from linus about the few ones that got them and started the false hype about intel being better for editing vs amd or vice versa🤔 or did it have something to do with the render speeds. I cant remember.
@@jippo91 Dude, it's still 8k and it's still a compressed raw file, so it's hardly "easy to edit." It's definitely not a basic uncompressed cinema DNG. The CRAW is easier to edit on a PC for sure, but it still puts a massive amount of stress on your memory and data throughput, as well as taxing your GPU to a decent extent IF you set the computer to use GPU debayering.

If your main complaint about the R5 is editing the C-Log 3 files, you just need a new computer. You spend enough money on other stuff for your channel. Have someone build you a custom setup from components, it'll probably cost less than off the shelf.
Exactly right! His focus is on what’s show casing the bottleneck not the problem of the actual bottleneck (his computer).
Buyers remorse will get a whole new meaning.
having owned a ferrari, thats exactly what its like.
r5c doesnt have ibis, r5 is a glorious shooter cam with splash of high quality video. thats its purpose, otherwise buy a komodo or something else that fits your needs
I've been using a 5D IV with the 17-40 L. Hand held video, no IS, period.
Kasey have you thought about making poxys of the 10 bit c log footage. And extra step but maybe it will help with your editing process 🤔
what you need bro it's a graphic card 3090 from Nvidia, not an apple, the nvidia card is miles above apple in performance
Why is your video so soft
CLOG3 edits fine in Resolve if you right click it and make it "optimized media" first.
No shit, that takes hours.
I have R5. Only Davinci has problem playing back the R5 codec. Use Final Cut or Premier. Just use Davinci for color
That involves either buying a mac, or paying monthly for Premiere...
hi kasey, looks like you need a newer more capable computer.. seems like all cameras nowadays are using uneditable files on older less ram equipped machines… i upgraded to a very reasonable m1 pro macbook pro… only cost 13 million 500 billion europounds… i still can’t edit my r6 files coz i’m rubbish at editing.. lol.. great vid as usual…
I shoot with the R6. Same codecs as R5 and mine edited like butter with RTX 2080 and my RTX 3080. It's all about the GPU when editing canon footage.
Fulming un 4K 4.2.2 10 bits ?
@Romain Provost Yes, and I'm shooting in 60fps in CLOG 3. I have a ryzen 9 5900x 12 Core Processor with 32gb Ram. I have also recorded in H265 on the Ninja V and their codec seems to function faster too. Everyone talks about how terrible editing R5 and R6 footage is, but I have never had an issue. It's about having a quality GPU and CPU.
@@JaredHoyman FOr sure, you have a beefy config... Not everyone has such a good CPU
”…they gaveee it to meee”
Damn you TikTok…
Canon keeps sounding better and better...wait what am I saying??? I left Canon for Sony because of the C hammer, now, because of those affordable 600 and 800 I am being wooed back. But I think I will wait for the R5 mark 2...maybe the sizzle will be fixed by then.
RUclips marketing man. Casey dose not give a crap about you all he cares is his paycheck. We live in a selfish world very little people truly helping eachotherout.
@@alphaandomega2709 you think canon is paying him? 🤣 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You are far lost from reality if that is the case.
I don’t even like gear videos but you are funny as hell.
You can edit the R5 files on the cheapest M1 Mac apple makes.
ruclips.net/video/LTVdfrNdsSM/видео.html
@@jippo91 There’s no “same codec chips” here, they’re implemented completely differently. Intel et fam accelerate H.265 4:2:0 and H.265 4:4:4 decode, but not H.265 4:2:2 decode.
I’m so confused, are you transitioning into a wildlife man??
"Phil Lite"???? That's my gerbil's name!!!
You want crippled? Try waiting for third party Z mount lenses. At least ones not made in Albania.
Did you set the Olmypus 100-400 test to AF Lens Priority ON in camera ? no wonder you got shakes
Man, that banding ruined all your toneh :(
Good morning east end Scompton bouncy diet camera squirrel guy.
Definitely not crippled. It's the best camera out there for photographers
1.25x speed is the way to go
I might be in the minority here but I really don't care for the Canon colors right out of camera.
jeez - again, u want the 100-500 and the r6 - unfortunately then your channel is over - so ....carry-on.
Get yourself an Apple M xxx or an Intel 12xxx powered computer and stop whining about your Commodore C64
Try Mac mini M1 for the file. Base config is sufficient for Canon footages.
Pull the trigger. Get an M1 or whatever they are called.
