- The ultimate battle is upon us. I want to pit the Canon R5 in it's 4k HQ mode against all the best cameras of the past decade in video. Does it beat the Sony A7S III? Panasonic G9? Olympus EM1 Mark III? How about the best budget vlogging camera ever made in the Panasonic G85? Or will it fall to the 2014 champion Samsung NX1? Let's find out! We'll test the stabilization, autofocus and overall image quality, colors and dynamic range. A Canon R5 review.
If you buy any of these through my affiliate links, Canon will release a firmware to compete with the Panasonic G85. Thanks Camera Canada for the loaner! Canadian links in the description!

man I just just thought and worked it out, here in the UK the panasonic L mount 30-60 is £650 and the free promotion lens if you buy the camera before September 30th is currently worth and on sale at £500. So that means the actual S5 camera is costing you, would cost me £850 British pounds!. That seems ridiculous for a full frame with this specs!.
Since you are not listing alphabetically anyways you should put canon at the bottom. Unless its a mime...LOL

Olympus EM1 Mark III for the win :)
Olympus is going out of business :(
@@RuelMorales Since when? They sold the camera division to another company that plans to continue the EM line and their medical business is still huge.
R U E L M O R A L E S M U S I C they aren’t going out of business they are having a company basically manage the camera division.
@@RuelMorales just because they sold their camera division doesn't mean their cameras suddenly stopped working. Overall the Olympus is the superior camera

I actually liked the G9 better than the R5 at the beginning.
I can't believe you go out every day and do this, for how long now? It's amazing dedication really. I can see you responding suavely "Just another day at the office. Another day, another dollar... another imperfect camera..."
I bet people in the neighbourhood are talking about him... "It's that crazy camera octopus guy again"
Can the R5 destroy the other cameras?
Only if you put them too close and they melt.
2:33 Never in a million years would I have expected for the freaking PANASONIC G9 to beat the goddamn Canon R5 in an autofocus test. Am I in bizarro world?
In all seriousness, the Olympus produced the best video output.
Michael agree!! I love mine
I agree
All that "digital sharpness", take it away from me!
Word
EM1 III produces the best dumpster videos hands down, the G9 had very smooth toneh as well.
That Olympus looks amazing!
We need you to sell your cameras and buy an A7Siii as soon as possible, thats the only way we will all survive
wow that samsung nx1 image looks amazing ! it's crazy how good it is !
Man the m43rds always surprise me just how good they are. I always expect them to be left for dead, but they keep up with the FF everytime.
EM1 was the best in this video IMO, however A7SIII is an almost better camera.
No
For the price of the Sony body, you could have the Oly with lenses.
I agree, the EM1 was clearly the better camera in this video.
@@rdpete Well, get it while you can, as they are going out of business...
The G9 outperformed the R5 🙈😅
All my food videos shot in my home studio still use the G85 I got because you had one! 🐰💗👀🙏
The Olympus is my favorite for the price and size. It is a great value. I am just going to use various lenses now on EM1 M2. The Sirui 50 and 35 mm lenses will look great on the Olympus.
It did not expect it, but the canon looks the worst out of everything in most instances. Maybe be a matter of settings though.
User error
I find the image to be a touch overexposed, which is generally not too pleasing and makes the colors look somewhat washed out. Tough I must say I'm not impressed by Canon's colors in general, considering Kasey's using official Canon LUT's that disappointing.
Haha the Canon User is an Error... get a sony and start the good work.
Lmao the canon looked great, better than pana and samsung
@@Aviciiz Certainly it's subjective. But for me at least, it was lacking. Good Toneh though.
The Sony looks so much better tho
Edit: and for that matter, for the price I'd rather have the panasonic G9!
the audio dub "canon r5" LOL
IKR, that was awesome!!
I think Mr. Camera Conspiracies has a twin brother and we are just seeing evidence of this for the first time. Listen to him talk on the split screen. If you analyze the audio separately, you can tell its 2 different people talking.
That would explain a lot of things. Especially his split personality and him relearning everything on every video.
Camera conspiracies conspiracies
It's true. One of the brothers thinks autofocus is important for vlogging, the other one loves the Fuji xt4.
The ibis wobble immediately gave it away lol
On a budget, the Olympus is still the best value, and better than any of them for SOOF camera-colour and IBIS, and also lighter. For larger wallets, Sony has the best AF, Dynamic Range, and Video Quality (even in 1080P), as well as Low-Light, Battery, Slomo, IBIS Metadata and Mic abilities, although colour is still a bit strange (reds looking orange). The Fuji XT4 would be ideal if they fixed their AF wobbling. If I were Kasey, I'd choose the A7SIII with the Sony 20 mm 1.8, but it's expensive. If Olympus-JIP bring out a new EM with updated video specs, that would be a serious competitor for documenting personal experiences and vlogging. The Canon R5 and R6 have too many freaky problems with Exposure, Colour, Dynamic Range, and even the new Dodgy DPAFII autofocus, plus the fake overheating timers and price, and expensive, over-sized lenses.
A7 S3 and the G9 looked much better than the R5. Olympus looked great too.
RIP the little G85 that could ♥️
Mega respect for not using 'cinematic' word in the title :)

Mostly because there's nothing cinematic about any of the videos he makes, would be my guess
The most annoying buzz word in the video community
Samsung NX2 with 60MP full frame. Partner with Sigma for lenses.
Samsung already partnered with Schneider Kreuznach with their NX lenses, and the optical quality of those lenses were excellent (especially for the price)
samsung nx1 was a frankenstein. 90% of the technology didnt belong to them. thats why it was so expensive. even the lens were rebranded.
@@kiyoshim9593 Indeed, it was Frankenstein's monster - incredibly powerful and crushed the competition, but nobody loved it and it was killed.

Fun fact: The Samsung NX lead is now on the SIGMA fp team
Is it me or was the g9 faster and better?
it was better :)
I agree. It was definitely better.
I just watched Gerald undones video on the g9 autofocus. Leant alot. Still confused but I learn the Panasonic autofocus is good and also shit at the same time
@@Provolt Gerald undones told the Panasonic autofocus is better when you sit and talk lmao " slow movement single shot focusing"
Agree... I have never had a problem with critical focus on slow moving subjects with the G9... but let me just admit here that I wish that its performance tracking low contrast subjects in low light was better... I wonder if Olympus would let Panasonic "inherit" it's hybrid autofocus system for the new GH6? (If Panasonic could tweak it first and make it even better! 🤣)...
Sony a7siii honestly is by far the best. The only drawback I see is it does make your shirt look orange.
Agree the DR is by far superior, and stabilisation on par with the best not even mentioning the 1080p vs 4k on R5
this can be fixed but takes color grading knowledge
Just don't use the Fuji-LUT.
Someone in the building is going "Helen, he's at it again!"
wow the NX1 is SHARP !
I think I know what happened with the R5 when shooting backlit. In the Shooting menu (camera icon), look for Auto Lighting Optimizer. It's on the second screen in the R6, probably similar in the R5. Enable that function, then select which of the 3 options you want to control contrast or brightness. Probably the third option to increase brightness. (I'm that guy who reads manuals. There's always one.)
Greyed out in Clog.

Jesus Christ I died at Canon R5 robot voice dubbed in. LOL
Overall winner was the Oly. The Canon was a big loser to all. Wow.
Every single camera beat the R5. The canon aperture priority in video seems more broken than the panasonic DFD loser AF.
The Olympus with Voitlander crushes the R5! Just watched your video again!
Great vid KC.... But you need to take a page from @MarkusPix and be consistent. These back to back videos are awesome references as long as you keep the lighting consistent. The G85 and A7siii footage was worthless for comparison.
Ranking in this video..
1. NX1 -still the best image. Super sharp, great skin tones, nice toneh with that 16 F2. The files are easy to edit. It NEVER overheats. On the negative side. Autofocus is a little slow especially in low light. No flipp screen and the stabilization is complete trash. 3 stops cant compete with 6-7 stops.
2. G9 - Just looks better than the R5. On every freeze frame on my 4k TV The G9 was sharper (though not as sharp as the NX1). The colors are also better, than the r5 especially the skin tones. Surprisingly decent toneh. Plus it shoots 4k60 10 bit, easy files to edit, log profiles, great stabilization and it doesnt overheat, its light and takes great pics. The only negative is that the autofocus is very slow. Much better than any other Pannys but still way behind; especially in push in shots. A very compelling camera especially given the low low price.
3. R5 -- looked good with good toneh and colors. Not amazing but good. Stabe was very good. If Olympus is a 8/10 in stabe, sony is a 6.5/10 and canon r5 is like a 5.5/10. The R5 has that nice full frame look. Was noticeably sharper then the A7siii(in 1080) as expected. For a hybrid, this camera takes the best pics by far. For video, it has too many cripples. file format that is currently nearly impossible to edit, OVERHEATING, $400000000 price, heavy as water buffalo.
4 A7siii in 1080. Obviously this is the best video camera atm. Even in 1080, it had the best toneh and autofocus, colors were just lovely. The only drawback is the high cost coupled with the high cost of lenses.
5. E-M1 iii just looked horrible. Looked like an iphone video. Overly sharpened with terrible toneh. Nice stabe but even with that pro lens it is not in the same league as the other cameras.
6. G85 was noticeably softer then the others, although it looked like you had the focus locked. Skin tones were typical Panny overly white.
Only he can make the R5 and R6 look so crappy. Well done.
They aren't that great...
@@MichaelRichards983 they are great just try them yourself and learn the camera first; you want to convince me that canon is not competing and all other cameras are better there is something off in those tests
@@slickhatter9812 For video purposes these cameras are behind; everyone knows this mate
@@MichaelRichards983 behind? XD yeah keep telling that to yourself. people are just nitpicking coz its canon and ignoring all the flaws of the other cameras.

The dynamic range of the NX1 is supposed to be horrendous, but damn, what's up with the R5? The detail of the NX1 still appears to be unmatched, can you do a comparo of the NX1 4K (maybe even highbit hack) vs the R5 8K? Silly but would be interesting to see.
You asked: Which one looks more stable? I would say, the guy on the left!
That was a flawless voiceover @ 5:48

I can not belive there is no better metering... Canon WTF?!
Can you not even click on your face to track it with the AF and then the AE also looks in the same area?
Having face/eye AF how come there is no face/eye AE?
Canon what the hell?
Man why'd you have to give away the G85.. it was perfect, the main stay and soul of the channel.
Though that G9 is mighty tasty with the new AF.
I couldn't perceive a situation where I would choose to use the G85 over the G9 or EM1 III, so I wanted to give back to a youtuber in need :)
@@cameraconspiracies I understand man, just grew so attached to it after watching for all this time. They both look amazing, one day I'll probably upgrade to one of them from my own G85 - but I'm a photography loser, and the AF is quite alright for that for the most part!
@@cameraconspiracies that's just great. I'm he'll great use of it.
They are all decent enough. I like the Panasonic layout, menu, app, unlimited recording, 422/10bit, dual slot, battery life, and bang/buck. Great for locked off event/corporate recording. I'd like to get the A7SIII for run and gun, but the only time I do that is for family videos - where a relatively cheap a6400 can do what I need.
The more I look at footage from the R5, the happier I am to have ordered the A7SIII... imho it’s terrible... bad stabilization, autofocus struggles, bad dynamic range... wow...
Not true he uses these cameras very wrong
Not sure what you mean by that, but he’s not the only youtuber I watch... I’ve watched plenty of videos, and I truly think what I’ve written...
The Canon's IBIS is supposedly good in photo mode but loses out to the Sony in video mode. Also the wavy IBIS corners that Canon licensed from Panasonic means it's a no go for me.
"Baby got back, bit not in a good way" lmao
G9 = betterer than R5.
Olympus looked the best
That voiceover at 5:54 is amazing loll
I swear if I was in one of those buildings looking out the window. I would be yelling "Moooom the crazy guy talking to the cameras running across the street while capturing squirrels is here again!!!"
How good is that freakin’ Olympus? Clear winner.
I agree. The Olympus video looks the most natural to me.
The colours look beautiful
I turned off eye detect on my R6 and AF significantly improved in certain situations! Like when your face is in darkness.
Shouldn't have to turn off your best feature.
Canon should add "track face/body when eye couldnt be found" settings lol
@@cameraconspiracies also , did you mind to change movie servo AF speed to -2 and sensitivity to -1 for next video? I hope you can give us "messing with video setting" type of video for R5 & R6.
@@adhi_atma I think the problem is that it finds eyes in the background, that aren't really there. Ghost eye AF.

Oly, then Panny Boy.
Seems that the ‘perfect’ vlogging camera is mighty elusive. Yes, the Sony A7s3 comes close but it’s price puts it out of reach for many people. Ditto for many recent releases from various brands.
What’s are the best options for scrub tubers with less than $1500. or $1000.00 to spend?. Perhaps we’ll need to forget about Toneh and night performance. Let’s see what some lower end units can really do. Might be surprised.
Herve Del Norte on that budget for RUclips vlogging I would say the Sony ZV1 would be plenty good enough and you would have money left over to buy a nice little gimbal if you wanted super steady B-roll. I love mine so far think it’s great 👍
The perfect vlogging camera is whatever you want to use because nobody _actually_ gives a shit what vlog footage looks like lol
Thanks for that. I’ll check that one out more.
R5 is sharper than G9 with better auto-focus and worse auto-exposure.
R5 4kHQ has more detail than A7Siii 4k, but I'm not sure it would be noticable unless they were side by side. I think the Sony IBIS stabilizes less but does so smoothly while the Canon was a bit jerky and induced mild motion sickness. Auto-focus, auto-exposure, and colours were different but but good enough on both.
The G85 was like the G9 with worse colours and dynamic range.
Now the Olympus is a serious competitor. It has better auto-exposure and stabilization, and I prefer the colours despite suspecting they're less accurate, but with marginally less detail than the R5's HQ mode. Neither had any autofocus glitches.
The Samsung's image quality was OK but it's autofocus and stabilization weren't great.
I think Sony and Olympus did the best here, then Canon, then the Samsung and the Panasonics
A7SIII, Olympus, G9, G85 and then R5. Just not that impressed. For the cost you might as well deal with a few Autofocus issues with a Panasonic or EM1 mkIII and call it a day. Just not seeing enough of a gap to warrant the cost.
G9 looks great!
this just proves that the G9 is a BEAST !!!
I'm surprised you're not talking about the Sony a7c. Are you in some secret circle again where you get the information about the new camera directly from Sony? I guess starting the 15th you're allowed to talk again :)
It is my understanding that an overheating R5 started the forest fires in the western US at a coming out party. 🔥 🎉
But the footage had good colours :)
Just give up! The canon R5 is just not gear towards vloggers scrubs lol
We're you using the gyro stabilisation for the Sony. I'm not even a video shooter but seeing that with the 4k 120 makes me want to buy the a7s3. I don't have a Canon but the expense is too great unless I get the RP with the 35mm lens because I don't have a 35mm for my Nikon Z6 out a73 and the cost is almost that if a camera so I'll buy another camera just for that focal range. It's how I ended up with my Fuji XT30. 24-70 is covered with there 18-55 kit lens. Thinking about the xt4 because I want 4k60. Watching this channel made me want to shoot videos. I'm mainly photos but if I did videos, I think I need 4k60
Sony A7S III is just glorious and the most pro movie like.
That EM1iii looks so good, i might look into one, I forget what the negatives were about that camera!?
Sammy still kicks ass!
great music as always. i wish i could have whole album to listien.
Entire discography is 15% off vegetablepolice.bandcamp.com/
Highlight Tone Priority on my R6 in video mode is page 2 on the first Camera Menu section third from the bottom. If you turn it off it performs as the other cameras do for exposure.
It's not on.
@@cameraconspiracies Ok, I thought you mentioned that you couldn't find it. I noticed a big difference for me when i have off vs on. Has Camera Canada sent you more memory cards yet?
Olympus looked fantastic. Best exposure, sticky autofocus, and gimble like stability. Its the cheetah of the camera world. The R5 looked terrible. Worst exposure of the lot.
Olympus' stabe is still the best in the industry. Everyone's kissing Sony's ass now that they've kinda got it working so long as you don't mind the digital crop because their tiny mount is too small to move a FF sensor around enough like other mounts can do. But Olympus perfected IBIS first, and they're still the best at it. Mount that Sony to a moving car on the same socket as the Oly next to it and you'll see which one is better.
The Oly colors also looked really natural, close to the Canon's and I've always liked Canon's colors. I feel like the PDAF equipped E-M1 iii gets short shrift sometimes.
Did you update the 15-35mm's firmware? I believe it helps with the IBIS shakes!
IMHO summing the overall video quality from all the cameras tested I'd give the A7siii top spot, not many compromises if any.
2nd spot goes to the G9 with only a few hesitations in auto focus letting it down. Personally i love the Image quality and stabilisation on the Panny That Leica tho... wow
3rd spot goes to the Olympus however I found it looking over saturated and had some weird sharpening on the red shirt edges, very usable though.
4th spot goes to the G85 for being great for 5 years old... pity about the auto focus.
Honorable mention to the Samsung. Clearly they should attempt the NX2.
The R5...... Sucks... it looks unusable with all that exposure BS, the image quality isn't great.... And the overheating..... Terrible.
yeah keep believing that XD while other content creators pull out the best video image quality of a stills camera ever of the R5 lol the exposure thing is user error. not sure why he cant find the metering mode settings. its actually very simple
@@MikedieONE cool story brro
Canon has the worst colors of them all... Canon colors are a myth 😂
His results aren't good, but he's almost certainly not using it correctly either.
Not a myth in photography. in video kind a lame.
wtf? his face color looks only good on the canon here. on the other cams its rather orange or green.
MikedieONE On my display it looks washed out. Not my taste.
This video conclusively demonstrated how entirely clueless Kasey is. If he gets results this bad from a Canon R5 (I'm no advocate from Canon, but the issue with their cameras is the crippling, like overheating, not the image quality), he's not qualified to test cameras at all.
Great content. Like comparing apples with alien space oranges. But still worth it
Talk about the R5 being overhyped and overpriced, the m4/3 cameras kicked it’s ass.
Nx1 seemed like image quality was just about the same as r5 and good autofocus and no overheating. Funny that cameras are just now making 4k normal when NX1 had it for years. I think I will keep NX1 another 2 years and by then maybe will be worth upgrading. Dynamic range on r5 didn't seem much better than NX1.
I love my Olympus for video at the moment. I’m actually shooting music videos for clients right now with it. Using the EM5 mark three. With the 25, 45, and 75mm 1.8’s.
Seems like the end of an era for you Kasey. Letting go of the G85 after all you’ve been through with it and the places you’ve journeyed together. My heart broke a little today. But I’m glad the G9 outperformed the R5. And dammit if that A7slll didn’t look cinematic. Great camera and nice vid.
That isn't a trash dumpster. That is his spaceship in disguise.
You nailed it, thank you. The R5 appears to be a 5dsr-chip put together with an R-Technology. 45mpix seems to be 50mpix minus room for IBIS-movement. ISO-pixeling at just ISO1600 look absoluteley similar, the IBIS seems nowhere near the competition, just mind an S1R or if you like a gfx100 or even a a7s4. Returning my r5 today, by the way, staying with my 5dsr and searching for the real IBIS and ISO machine. Thank you.
All i want is cam'ra canada, all i want is cam'ra canada!
If samsung would make a comeback into the mirrorless war it will destroy canon and sony.. the colors look better than canon. And stabilization wasn't bad at all for a 6yrs old camera.
I was holding out for an NX2 for many years, but I fear there will never be an NX1 successor. Would have been amazing...
You're gonna regret giving up that G85 a few years from now.

After all these years of watching camera reviews online, and reading the comments and debate, now, when anyone tell me which camera is better then the other, my first respond to them is, “show me your work.”
Man, there are many people who does not even hold the camera once in a month is telling you what camera is better. I say, my foot.
Does the R5 destroy? No. Not surprising, considering how good its competitors are, but I was still surprised that the G9 was better in terms of focus, and both the Olympus and Panasonic were better at difficult exposure situations. Plus none of the other cameras produce heating anxiety. This is the result of Canon ignoring mirrorless while other manufacturers were going through the learning process. It didn’t matter for them because there was no competition from Canon and Nikon. Now Canon cannot avoid going through the learning process, but they are doing it in an environment where the alternatives are already excellent. And sadly, Nikon is being left behind in the dust and contemplating how Pentax must have felt as it too sank into irrelevancy.
Loser four thirds FTW!
I know we don’t make the big bucks like you RUclips guys but I still think that Panasonic is just a phenomenal camera . Then of course the Olympus but I just can’t see paying my money for those cannons and the Sony
Kasey, you should mount ALL cameras close to each other and then rock back and forth like a deranged person in order to compare auto focus. You should also mount the squirrel to to your head.
The canon will cause a small forest fire with the others too close to it.
