    • @johnsmith1474
      @johnsmith1474 5 лет назад

      @@ninacleven7889 - For starters I can spell aesthetic, indicating I also have the education to what it means. Aesthetics is not about "each to his/her own," it is in fact more or less objective, if one approaches it via the vocabulary of visual analysis. (This is why art can be evaluated by experts like myself.) What is a matter of, "to each their own," is whether something is "amazing," because "amazing" is a term not in the vocabulary of visual analysis. Babies are amazed by shiny objects for instance, that does not mean that shiny object are of high aesthetic value. Don't think me too tough on you, that is how you learn, art is a tough business. P.S. I understand you were being kind toward "fotoripper" but that's not aesthetic judgement.

    Been loving this whole series from all of you! I feel your pain on the Sony's. I was shooting overnight at Jackson Hole recently at around -20c and went through 13 batteries, with my ballhead and eventually shutter on my A7rII freezing up. My LCD also always quits working even at around -5c. I've found that if you remember to leave the shotshoe cover in then it helps as that part seems really susceptible to shorting out in bad weather if it's exposed.

    I was falling asleep when I remembered your unanswered question about the leeches so, as one does, I googled. They burrow down all snuggled up below the frost line. Although I also read that some species can even withstand -90C for 32 months and survive.

      @@fototripper I couldn't find anything on the specific mechanisms of their particular dormancy, just that they survive. However, other animals that survive freezing temps create chemicals that combine with water molecules to reduce it's freezing point. I was traumatized to learn there could be as many as 7,000 per square meter tho. They feed on frogs and fish, mainly. Also, they are carnivorous worms. #themoreyouknow

    A tip I picked up for keeping batteries slightly warm: keep them in an chest pocket under your coat. Throw a hand warmer in there for a little extra boost. And this will add some bulk and clumsiness to your tripod, but a power bank and usb dew heater might help keep things from seizing up if you get creative. I glued a few velcro strips around each tripod leg and a 26k mAh power bank to hold it during long cold sessions.

    I put battery grips on my a7RII and a7RIII when I purchased them, to give me a bit of winter happiness (and for my big ape-like hands). It is amazing how the cold kills them. During the summer I can go all day with the two in the grip on both cameras. Forget it in freezing temps though, although the 3 is far better than the 2. Gorgeous shot though, something for the portfolio sir. Love me some Tim Hortons! Tim Bits and an XL double-double. They are everywhere here in New York State, near the border. Look into a couple dew heaters that astrophographers use. They top out producing about 30C but in my experience using a camera in "beyond manufacturer specifications" cold it's helped enough to keep all the electrons moving. Wrap one around the lens and one around the battery compartment. Get a 12V battery, run a long wire into your coat, and keep the battery warm with your body heat.
    Not at all what dew heaters are meant to do, but it works for me.

    One tip is to pick up those feet warmer packs. They have a sticky side. Stick that below and off to the side of the battery compartment. I've got the A7ii and while yes my battery life wasn't great it still took about an hour and a half of shooting Star trails in -35 before the camera shut off. Also if you buy one of those battery bricks for a cell phone just leave the power plugged in when you aren't using the camera. With the new Sonys you can actually run the camera while it's plugged in but the A7ii can't

    The camera can be powered via a lead to a battery kept warm in your pocket. Also, camera components shrink in the cold weather and greases go stiff … so you need a winterised body - very specialised and spendy. Hold your breath while near the camera to stop ice forming. Finally, place all your gear in a bin liner before thawing out in the car to stop condensation forming. And what are you doing running around at -20C without a hat?

    Better late than never with comments. I always place the camera in a sealed plastic bag before bring the gear inside from the cold. Moisture in warm air will condense on the stuff and get it damp. Taking it back into the cold will cause everything to freeze solid or jam, not to mention cause shorts and havoc on the electronics.

    Apparently you are not using the Generation 3 Sony cameras and Z batteries. Those issues don't happen on newest versions.

    Absolutely brilliant vlog and I have been following eveyone's adventures on their own websites - just great stuff.
    Sorry to see that your Sony and equipment was slowly giving up the ghost, making shooting an adventure in frustration. I'm more then assuming after this trip, if you do change gear, it won't be Sony. Any ideas in what direction you might go?
    Peter

      It'll be Sony as I'm trapped in with lenses. The V3 has good batt life

    Great to see you both together.. You should surely change your gear.. Nikon or Canon.. both are excellent.. I use 80D and it survived -10C without any problem.. and I believe 1DXII or 5DM4 can survive -25C easily.. Peter mckinnon also uses Canon and I believe Thomas uses 5D mark 4.

    You could probably drive a truck on that lake, the cracking is just what ice does when it gets colder. Please. If it's a concern you could have just asked the staff how long it's been cold, and determine the thickness, even cut a hole to check, you're only 500 feet from the lodge if you get wet.

    I think at that weather conditions most electric or photo equipment will have a hard time but about your condition that is another 50p and maybe could be solved at a gym close to you :-) Great video once again.

    Maybe a device used by astrophotographers would help with keeping the cameras going? Something like the "AstroZap Dew Heater Strap for 3" Telescopes". As far as your tripod legs sticking, try pouring some alcohol-based hand sanitizer on them, it works for frozen car locks.

    That’s only -4 degrees Fahrenheit I shoot a lot in the interior of
    Alaska at -15 to -20 Fahrenheit just takes getting used to and a few tricks in your basket .

    As a hiker, I often keep a lot of my stuff next to my body in various pockets to keep it warm. That's water filter, stove fuel and, well.. camera batteries. I would suggest you could "hide" the camera under your jacket every now and then to warm it back up, but I fear that might cause condensation issues... It should work decently well for batteries though.

    • @GjPeddy
      @GjPeddy 5 лет назад

      oh another option could be hand warmers.. perhaps keeping them next to the more crucial buttons would help. there are reusable versions, where you break a coin-like thingy inside them to warm them up and, once used, you cook them in boiling water for n minutes and they'll be ready for use next time.. I haven't done this myself, just thinking out loud, but might be worth trying

      I used to have those but they were a total pain to have to boil afterwards. Mind you, better for the environment I guess @@GjPeddy

    When I was a kid growing up in the Detroit area I'd be out playing and having the time of my life in -25C (not counting the chill factor). When it was starting to get dark my mom would stand in the front doorway in a coat and yell at me to come in or I'd miss dinner. (It was the only threat that always worked on me.)

    A7Riii is the solution Gavin. Everyone complained about the battery problem and for once, a company actually listened. The next generation battery is awesome. How did Thomas like his double-double? Did he get the delicious candy variety or the burnt-nasty pot hasn't been cleaned in months variety?

    Weather sealing and battery life. Not exactly Sony's strong points. But those conditions are pretty extreme. The one image was worth it. How did Nick's Sony gear do? I think Thom's Canon gear held up.
