    My understanding waas that the best quality was from the native ISO which on the D850 is 64, Li is an electronically adjusted ISO same as 100 etc.

  • @Andrew_marr
    @Andrew_marr 5 лет назад +15

    Great video Gavin, I would love to see this location with flowing water, it must be impressive. It was fascinating to see and hear you two chat about the D850. There were some interesting points you raised. With my D850, I have back button focusing set up so I can use both approaches (manual and autofocus) without the need to switch a dial and I have the back dial set to punch in to check focus. I believe 64 is the lowest native ISO for the sensor, 'L' or low uses software to simulate a lower ISO however you may lose some dynamic range, which with the image you took, probably didn't matter. Thanks for sharing!

    Did I see a camera conspiracies motion when the flippy screen was mentioned?

  • @davidbruceod
    @davidbruceod 5 лет назад +5

    Gavin, my understanding is that ISO 64 is the native ISO for that sensor, and thus highest quality. The lower ISO is achieved through Nikon's interpolation algorithm, and though it may appear sharper, you could do the same with 64 image by manipulating sharpness and contrast in Lightroom. This same principal applies to expanded ISO settings. The sensors is not more sensitive, the camera simply runs the data through a different algorithm. So I'm led to believe by those far more informed by me.

    • @fototripper
      @fototripper  5 лет назад +1

      I'd like to experiment more with this and get to the bottom of it.

    • @DanniEfraim
      @DanniEfraim 5 лет назад +2

      This is almost correct, but it doesn't have anything to do with sharpness or contrast. What it does in the simulated ISO 32 mode is that it overexposes by one stop, then pulls back exposure by one stop. This will indeed give more data and detail in the shadows and midtones, at the expense of losing one stop of highlight data. If you're shooting in RAW, which I really hope anyone using a D850 is, you can achieve exactly the same by overexposing by one stop and setting exposure to -1 EV in Lightroom. Basically it's the same as exposing to the right, only you get more control over the highlights if you do it manually and choose just how much to the right you'll go.

    Gavin, Sony 100% battery life 42 mins, that's okay, you could squeeze another 8 mins out of them if you stuff them down the front of your troosers, your haw maws --> (_)) will keep them nice and toastie, buy a pair of swimming shorts with the small pocket in the waist band, they will doubly useful seeing as you spend a fair amount of time falling in the water. Or if you are not that adventurous, when shooting in cold temperatures buy the small gel hand warmers, stick the batteries along side them in your backpack, unless you want to try both Gel and Batteries down the front of your troosers and become the Evel Knievel of the photography world.... great video again Gav.

    Programming your AE-L/AF-L button to back button focus, and the OK button to toggle in and out of 100% mag simplifies life for those of us with subpar eyes and therefore use autofocus. @redhed1713 5 лет назад +1

    Great video. Keep up the good work chaps. :-)
    Just a couple of things though. I think it has been said below, but the lowest numbered ISO in all cameras are normally where the highest quality for noise and dynamic range are, though the D850 seems to have pretty similar DR on the 'Lo' settings to ISO 64.
    The timer should be able to be set to 10 seconds in the menu if that is preferable. And I would always use a remote above the Timer if I have it with me. :-)
    The camera should be more accurate to focus in Liveview as it is using the contrast detection, which though slower to focus, is more accurate. It is normally better than my old eyes. I always magnify the area of focus to fill the the LCD. The focus point fills the whole screen, and I either touch to focus or use the AF On button and it is a bit easier to see that is has got it right by the box turning green, and the scene hopefully looking sharp. ;-) lol

  • @Eikenhorst
    @Eikenhorst Год назад

    You can also assign the AF only to the AF-on button and not on the shutter release, so you can auto-focus and then it doesn't change when you take shots. This has the advantage that you can't forget to turn the AF back on when you net time want to refocus and don't notice that it actually didn't focus because it was still on manual

    I use the back focus on my Hasselblad X1D. I learned the technique from a Nikon user, so I presume you can do this on any "800" series Nikon. Set the camera to manual focus, then use the back focus. It will auto focus even though you're in manual focus. THEN...enlarge to manually tweak the focus if necessary, then fire the shutter. The "cool" thing here is that when you fire the shutter, the camera WILL NOT refocus.

    Gavin, I find if I want the sharpest from the D850 is to set the live view to silent mode 1. It then records right from the sensor with no moving parts, shutter or mirror. Since it records line by line if you are taking a picture of a spinning propeller it can warp the blade on the image. I don't know about the Canadian Rockies but the Rockies here in Colorado sit pretty still so that is not a problem. (Live view ON-press the i-set SL to 1-using the selector and button above.) I use the self timer at 5s and that seems give it time to settle.
    PS if you set the # of shots under self timer to 2 it will take all of a bracket of shots 3,5,7 or what ever. so one press and all sots of the bracket are taken. I use these settings a bunch and they seem to get those Juicy shots the most.

    For comparisons like at the end just make the raw files downloadable 🥰. The L ISO does some tweaking, but please don’t ask me what exactly, I never tested it. Base ISO is 64, like 100 on your 7RM4. I doubt the tweaking of the virtual low ISO rates truly increase image quality... NEF has super shadow details in the lossless compressed raw, maybe this is somehow utilised for the L ISOs. FYC (I’m pretty sure you already know that): ARW is not available lossless compressed. The compressed ARW of your 7RM4 is not lossless and reduces ARW to 12 bits and dramatic loss of shadow information. BTW: have them both, 7RM4 and D850 😉😇. For landscape, the 16 bits of GFX are spicy. No more exposure blending. Awesome shadow details. Forget expose to the right with that GFX. Expose to the highlights and you’re good. Ahhhh, yes, RAF are also lossless compressed available 🤩

    Funny stuff from 'The Tetley Twins" as always Gavin...without trying to sound too much like a geeky nerd ! (but I do have a Nikon D810) you can tell Dr Grumps that he can easily change his shutter delay time to 5, 10 or 20 seconds in the Custom Settings menu under Timers/Self Timer ..and I have found the same on my 70-200mm f2.8 that 2 secs often not enough..I use 5 secs and that seems to work but if he also uses Live View zoomed in when he's shooting slow exposures you can see the vibration slow (and of course that bloody great hefty mirror is taken out of the equation) and then press the shutter which together with it's 5 sec delay is usually sufficient to prevent tears before bedtime !! ...unless its windy of course in which case you just give up and use your iPhone !! I could go Ubernerd on the native iso64 vs L0.3/7/1 etc but my understanding is that the "L's" basically just expose to the right more etc then drag it back in camera but I see BisonFlyer24 below has answered it ...BTW did you notice Gavin that despite ALL that live viewing and general fannying around there was LOADS of battery life left !!?? just saying !
