Fitting Stainless Steel Braided Brake Lines. FZ1

    After years of riding bikes with rubbish rubber brake hoses and squishy braking feel at the lever, I decided that it was time to raise my FZ1's braking to it's full potential. So I set about replacing the stock rubber hoses with a set of stainless steel braided brake lines from Probrake: bit.ly/braidedlines.
    Now remember, this is a 'How-Did' not a 'How-To'. And also remember to dispose of your brake fluid responsibly and safely. Don't just pour it down the drain, that stuff is NASTY!
    Also remember that brake fluid is HYGROSCOPIC. This means that it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and holds it in suspension. This gives lots of advantages when it's inside your braking system, but it also means that once the bottle of fluid has been opened, it immediately starts absorbing moisture. So once your installation and bleeding is complete, any brake fluid that you have left over is now unusable. With this in mind, I recommend getting small bottles of brake fluid like this: amzn.to/2Xoe7Sk, so that you never have much going to waste.

    Great video.
    One thing I would add is that the reservoir screws are JIS screws. NOT PHILLIPS!! People bugger up those small screws on Japanese bikes all the time using Phillips screwdrivers on JIS screws.
    Japanese Industrial Standard.
    Look very similar to Phillips, but are different. If you have a Japanese motorcycle you really do need to get a set of JIS screwdrivers. E-Bay and Amazon have plenty of inexpensive options. Vessel is a quality brand that makes a set that has a metal top and can be used as an impact for this very job. Impacta is the line.
    They will save your screws!

    For anyone who’s never worked on break lines before, you will also need to take the break fluid reservoir cap off so gravity will help push it out if not it’ll just make a vaccums inside the hoses cause no air can flow inside n open it up. Just trust me if you’ve never done it before. And if you don’t think it’s doing better it’s as simple as putting the cap back on. But just do it.

    Nice vid, just about to do this on my cbr 600. Also, good to see someone who has the sense to just puncture a couple of small holes in the brake fluid container seal rather than taking off the entire foil seal and glugging the stuff uncontrollably all over the place! much more controllable your way.

    Loving the way this bike is coming along. And at a reasonably steady pace, unlike like a lot of similar vids where money upon money is thrown at it to change it all at once. This is much more true to life, little by little. Well at least my life. Where each month or so i try to get something done/changed/renewed or refurbished.

    Out of all the money I spent on my FZ8 on mods, braided lines was the best money I spent and that truly made a difference to my riding experience. I would recommend this over an aftermarket pipe!

      Agreed. The feel is greatly improved now and with no pulsing or wandering during hard braking. You can’t go fast until you can stop fast!

    The joys of pumping and releasing lol. Nice patient tutorial Andy, that brake fluid always gets me nervous. I learned working on Japanese bikes that some of their crosshead screws are different, known as JIS. (Japanese Industrial Standard) Bought a set of JIS screwdrivers and the bite/torque is significant, no stripping, might be the case for the brake reservoir screws. Cheers!

      I just recently learned about JIS screwdrivers when working on my bicycles. Damned Phillips bits never fit the adjustment screws worth a crap. I bought a JIS screwdriver, and what a difference! Some research turned up that the stooopid Phillips bits were *designed* to torque out to "prevent over-tightening". The designers should have been tarred & feathered. On top of that, JIS *preceded* the Phillips standard by 20 years. So the Japanese got it right in the first place, then 20 years later, the brain-damaged Phillips standard was created.

    I bled the brakes on the SMT on Sunday. The bleed valves were leaking like the titanic and the little plastic bottle into which I'd even cut an X to put the tube through to stop it sliding out, then fell over and mess bloody brake fluid all over the place, in addition to the fluid busy leaking down through the Brembo frigking brake callipers. Eventually got it all cleaned up with copious amounts of brake cleaner but I did a wonderful rendition of Andy Man Cam's Bike Sonata in F*** sharp.

    I'm just about to do the same thing to my FZ1 and remembered I saw this one some time ago.
    Not that my original ones are done but I simply have to replace them to get rid of the original junction below headlight. Otherwise I cannot use my brand new front wheel stand 😁

    Did mine some years back and I did the rear also, first time I ever put the anchors on hard I left 10 foot streak of rubber from the rear tire. Took a while to adjust my braking style.

    Good idea to leave the lever tied back over night as well to let any residual air work up to the reservoir.

      Should not be any residual air in the fluid. Dirt bikers do that when the brakes start to get a bit spongy, that's just old fluid for you, just pump the brakes a few time, or even during use they will stiffen up.

      Thanks Walter! I totally agree. I’d be all over a decent LED headlight for our bikes. I even considered trying to budge an MT-09 headlight on. But the cost would be enormous!!

    I think the brake reservoir uses JIS screws so that would be why they're being extra difficult (if there's a dot on the screw head that's an instant give away). I would love to do the same mod but the ABS model has hoses all over the place

      Not sure about them being JIS. My usual screw driver tackled them with ease and fit well in the groove. They appear to be made of plastic so be gentle on them...

    Sorry, my OCD can't live with those hoses going either side of one horn. Either both hoses going between the two horns or one on the outside of each horn. I'm going to keep seeing that on all future videos now. 😬 That's another therapy session I've got to book! 😁

      I feel you! But fear not. This is only a temporary situation. The brake lines are a step on the road to new handlebars. I’ve already fitted them, so the brake lines are already nestling warmly next to each other. Phew!!

    My personal tip If you plan to replace brake lines Please inspect brake calipers also Its a good occasion to do some rebuilds and changing seals is rather easy task

    Nice one Andy. Couldn’t you get carbon fibre ones 😂😂I fitted them to my last bike, but thankfully my Tiger came with steel braided hoses as standard.

      Many thanks and entirely my pleasure Jesper! With the 2 line setup (often also called the 'race' setup) you have a more direct connection between master cylinder and caliper. Gives less possibility for flex or swell (not that there is much possibility with braided lines!). It also takes away the brake line going over the mudguard, whicjh I think makes it look a bit tidier. TBH in the real world and in my clumsy hands, I probably couldn't really tell the difference! Even using the standard layout, braided lines will still give a far better feel and braking directness than the stock lines. 👍🏻

    One important check to do is to leave enough wire length for the suspension to completely expand...maybe you mentioned this and I missed it, but since we are playing with safety it's better to say it twice than none :)

      Yes, it had no signs of cracking right up to when i sold it. I think it was only a certain batch of 06 bikes that had the problems.

      That I can fully understand!! My bike without ABS cost 75€. The ABS kit is over twice that! PLUS the incredible extra faff of fitting and bleeding. No thanks!!

    strange setup with the brake lines, I'm used to seeing either the splitter, or the left caliper is daisy chained off the right caliper, as is the case on the Versys.

      They call it the ‚Race setup‘ apparently. Supposedly it’s what race bikes have because of the shortest possible way from master cylinder to caliper means tighter, sharper and faster braking. Obviously this also means longer lines, so the manufacturers go for the setup with the shortest overall Hose length. Cheapskates!! So far I’ve only been able to squeeze the lever in the garage! But it feels very firm already! 😂

    Both new lines the same length? Normally with a 2 line set up the one for the left calliper is slightly longer to accommodate the fact it has to go further.

      The front brake was vital for the following handlebar swap. Back brake might get some attention one day, but I barely use it anyway so it’s not priority for the funds!!

    Andy, did you do anything to remove the 'flex' from the washers on the rearsets? research shows people flip the rubber washers, or replace them entirely

      Hi David. I never had any problem with it, so i left them as they were. I felt was less vibrations through the pegs on this bike than through any other I’ve had so i thought, if it ain’t broke...

      I’ve not been able to ride yet. Crap weather and work. But in the garage, it felt considerably firmer. A definite improvement. Hoping to test on the road tomorrow.

    Andy Man Cam Can, luckily, nobody noticed me cut into my finger with a dremel during the making of one of my videos, because I did not film it, and hid my finger enough somehow nobody knew a thing lol. I'm going to bleed my brakes, I would get braided lines but they are a bit expensive and I just spent all my savings on the upgrades I have done :)

      Ouch, that sounds no fun. True professional just to carry on and keep it quiet though! SS lines are a bit pricey sadly. But if you’re happy with your braking already, I guess why worry about it!

      @@AndyManCam lol it wasn't to bad really, a bit sore for a few day's and left a little scar to add to many from working on cars for years.
      My brakes do seem ok, but they definitely could do with a fluid change. When I topped them up the rubber gasket/seal was not on properly. Whoever put it on before, somehow trapped one side of it inside the reservoir so air was probably getting in.

      @Jake Kirk It got expensive slowly for me you could say lol. As I don't work at the moment, it took the best part of a year to get my parts. It took ten months before that to save enough to trade in my 125 to get my '08 ER6f after getting my full license.
      I've now fitted Renthal bars and grips, bar end mirrors and some nice levers, a nice but cheap fuel cap (lock on old one was corroded), DNA performance filter and NGK iridium plugs, Scorpion end can and new chain and sprockets, went -1 on the front.
      With the free preload on the rear tightened up too, the bike now feels like a different bike all round :)

    I need to do this as I've just changed handle bars , do they all come the same length or is there a specific lenght for our fz1n gen 2

      They come in surviving lengths for the bike, but you can also have them longer (which i did).

      Afraid i don’t know the exact length, but mine were 7cm longer than stock. Throw HEL an email. I think they can custom make whatever you need, based on stock lengths.

    Hey Andy I just installed my new stainless steel brake lines on. I’m trying to bleed fluid back into to system like this but it’s not happening. Any help ?

      Hey Hunter. Do you have ABS? If so, the bleeding process is far more complicated and I’m afraid I’ve never tried it.

      Thanks Scott. It’s really not too difficult. The only problem is the immense risk of making a horrible mess and destroying your paintwork in the process!! 😂 The Finger is healing nicely. Turns out I properly ripped it up! It’s gonna leave a mark for sure!

    Are you a watchmaker with those type of tools LOL you didn't check which line is shorter that's why you had to turn banjo, and this is not recommended. Also brake lines are zipped directly to metal parts, it's gonna eat thru metal like butter caused by vibrations. I hope you are still riding.

    That's probably the most OCD tutorial i've ever watched! One question, the camera is strapped to your forehead during those videos, right? How long it took to get used to not to bang it around against stuff?

      Haha! It took a while! ‚Luckily‘ I was blessed with a big nose though, so I’m sort of used to something waving about a few inches in front of my face! I also have the camera mounted to the bottom of a baseball cap peak, so that also protects the equipment a little bit.

    Do your bike have ABS? ... I talked to my mechanic and he told me that ABS systems may need to be pressure tested after changing hoses ...

    Don't wipe brake Fluid off paint, rinse with clean water, to remove and bleed brakes better to use a vacuum pump especially for and systems

      Very good advice. In that respect I was poorly prepared. A vacuum pump would have been great, but sadly the equipment budget was destroyed on the brake lines and backstage Haribo.

      Thanks Chris! The lever has a much more firm feel to it now and when braking it seems a lot more like I can ‚feel‘ what the brakes are doing.

    I am contemplating to do the same....., however the bike is 6 years old and the SS lines cost 130 dollars, new OEM cost 40dollars......🤦‍♂️ As much as I think the stainless steel lines are super fancy and cool I have trouble justifying the expense......
    The OEM lines will give me another 4-6 years after that the bike might not even be there anymore.....

      Yeah it’s a tough choice to justify. For most of us, i think the brake feel of OEM is more than adequate. Except for bikes like the Versys 650, which apparently REALLY benefit from SS lines. I personally didn’t mind my brakes so much but I wanted the Race setup and the extra flexibility that would give me when I changed the handlebars.

    you stress way too much about the brake fluid. keep a can of brake cleaner near by with a wet rag. spray on, wipe off. never had an issue. just done leave it on the paint for too long.

      Stress as much or as little as you want, but the longer the stuff says on the paint, the worse it will be damaged. I prefer to keep that potential damage to an absolute minimum!

    Too paranoid about brake fluid. It is not acid.. if you rinse with water it is ok.

      Which is great if you have running water to hand. I’ve seen brake fluid destroy paint far too quickly NOT to be careful about it. You only ruin your paintjob once.
