- Never one to miss the opportunity to save some cash, I removed the Oxford Premium Adventure Heated Grips from my old Versys 650 and fitted them on to the 'new' Yamaha FZ1-N.

"Just like the incredible hulk in Amsterdam's red-light district, I'm battling with tight rubber" - Saved for posterity. Now I can clean the coke-light off my keyboard, you silly bugger.
+disekjoumoer Hahahaaaa! Sorry about that! Though the most worrying thing, is where these images come from!
I know I am kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Zaid Jaxton Flixportal
@Alfred Ernesto Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it!!
@Zaid Jaxton happy to help =)
Metalhead's top tip - if you are unsure if it'll work due to damage, plug it all in and test it first before fitting them, whilst it is warm, this also makes the rubber a bit more stretchy to fit on the bars a bit easier ☺️
Good tip! Though both good and bad, the grips easily slipped over the bars when they were cold. Thankfully they worked as I wasn't smart enough to try them before it was too late. 😂
Nice job mate. I’ve never heated grips until last year, and don’t know why I waited so long. It’s just amazing not having your hands freeze when riding around 2 Celsius. Ride safe mate.
I'm with you mate. I can't imagine NOT having them! Even being able to extend the time that you can ride into winter with your summer gloves is a huge bonus!
“Plugged the poor girls eyeballs in “ lmao 🤣
:D
Thanks to this vid I now have my oxford grips on and I must say I'm happy with the result. Thanks AMC 👍
Brilliant! No surprise though. Mine are still going strong in their third year and second bike!!
Use a small butane torch to heat your heat shrink it works well and you won’t need power .
One step ahead of you there bruv! I had one on order that was supposed to be here for this video, but of course Amazon prime was late...
Andy Man Cam thats good maybe another AMC garage episode for us .
Don't you worry darling. It'll be featuring in at least 2 videos in the very near future!
Andy Man Cam can’t wait 😊😘
I always thought it was too much of a hassle but I'll have to consider that for next winter (seems a bit late for this one).
Once again, thank you for the easy to follow video.
+Curve Ahead Yeah it's certainly a faff. But those long cold rides with toasty fingers makes it all worthwhile! 😊
You are a wizard at running wires. I'm in the middle of this same job on my fz6 but the battery is just ahead of the air cleaner box. I am cutting and moddifying the leads going to the battery so I can unplug the grips and directly plug them to a battery tender though. Idk if any one has thought of that before.
Nice idea! Anything that can make your life easier in both the short term AND the long term is a win!!
Just a quick tip you may or may not know about. If those rubber grips just will not come off, Find an air line in a garage and blow a blast of air in the hole in the end while blocking the hole in the other handle bar. Works like a charm. Of course if you are without an air line (No, NOT Ryan air) I suppose you could eat four or five cans of beans, do some Yoga as prep and use Methane instead. Though that is more entertaining if you can get your girl friend or mum to do it. Just be sure to tell them remove tights first or they will have unsightly swollen ankles.
Yep, sadly no airline and generally just no power whatsoever! I'll be sure to try and entice the Mrs into the garage after a Lentil rich dinner next time though!! :D
I try and guess the amount of cable ties you’ll use before the video starts, I’m never right not even close!😂
Hahaha! Could be a good drinking game! Shot with every zip tie, two if I trim it off at the same time!
Magical hacksaw... I bet it warmed you up a little so it wasn't that cold anymore :D that's a nice toolset btw...
The best kind! I borrowed it from Ichiban Moto! It's the best bitset I've ever had, bar none!!
I cant believe it... a whole video with out the clang of a dropped allen key. Lol. Cheers
I know. It just felt so wrong. :(
Oh my you do love a monumental faff Andy.
You know it!!
Impressive restraint shown considering the huge potential for innuendo.
Mind you with editing software if you spot a double entendre you can always just whip it straight out.
And yes, that joke is older than I am.... :D
I like to think that I am a mature adult with the ability to rise above such juvenile humour. ;D
Pain in the bum to fit, (took me a lot longer) but so much better than frosty fingers. Don't forget that vest sweetypie!
Agreed. A real faff! I'm wiring the vest to the new bike VERY soon!
Self Amalgamating tape Andy, you get it at Maplins etc.
It's for creating watertight electical connections. Also sold as plumbing repair tape, magic stuff, very handy for manly man stuff.
+Nigel Ren Ah yes! Magical stuff! Must get me some of that stuff again!
Knew you'd know about it. A mechanic showed me.
That's the only stuff I use on bikes now as its also an insulator and shock absorber.
+Nigel Ren Yeah, my dad always had a roll of it kicking around his garage. That's a good point. Might be worth a test as a vibration damper for camera mounting. Hmmmm.....
I internaly wired new bars (Harley) and used it on all the delicate solder joints. I've also got it on cables near the headstock, to stop them scratching the paint.
You've just to remember to stretch it before wrapping. I usually forget!
+Nigel Ren Handy shizzle! I've just got to now figure out what it's called in German!
A cheapo cigarette lighter is good for heat shrink, just don’t hold it on for too long. Many use hairspray for grip glue.
OldManTony I was just going to say the same... hairspray has always been the “glue” of choice for my grips. Not as difficult to get off again as superglue either and doesn’t go that white way.
+OldManTony I have tried the cigarette lighter trick. Sadly, due to the lack of electricity, i have to leave the door open which means too much wind for it to work! 😂
+Mick Whitworth I've tried both and always had more success with superglue. The grips on the fazer 600 during the first tour were hairsprayed in place. After the 4th day of relentless rain they were slipping about all over the place! I'm happy to sacrifice easy removal for a long lasting fix.
Butane torch for heat mate, did it the other day in wind worked a treat
+Nudge & Dukey Already a step ahead. The butane torch was on order but didn't get here in time! 😎
Man I need to do this mod too. I had them on my old SV650 and didn't swap them before selling it.
+Mechiemoto There was never any doubt that they'd be jumping from the old to the new bike!
That is a delicious looking ratchet set! I've got a nice Proxxon set, but it's a little too heavy to take on the bike....Hmm! :)
Thanks Bimble. She's a beaut! This one is perfect bike size! :D
I love a bit of rubber warmerousness! :D Nice vid mate, gotta love a bit of innuendo when working ya bikes tight rubber battles! :P
In-your-endo!
I'm surprised you didn't use the 3M dual lock on the grip controls so you can remove it easily when opening the brake reservoir. I'm still waiting for my FZ1 to get back from insurers since October(Prius taxi rear end at lights) , they apparently replaced my heated grips so wondering what they fitted to replace the Daytona ones it came with.
+Bikers Quest I considered it, but i think i still only see this as a temporary fix until i can be bothered to come up with a better idea! I'd quite like to get aftermarket levers at some point too you see. I hope yours comes back in time for spring.
Once again I had to delay watching by 10 mins to brew myself some coffee. Nice vid, but I'm happy my used bike came with Oxford grips already installed. Someone didn't want to carry their grips over to the next bike.
+F4celessArt I need to stop ordering the mandatory coffee. It's not very friendly! Lucky you, their cold handed laziness is your toasty fingered joy!
Coffee is never a bad idea though, so it's more of a good suggestion than an order. Just like heated grips a warm cup of joe warms your hand in the wintery coldness.
Too very true!! It's for your own good!!
Triple tree? TRIPLE TREE?!?!?!? Good grief, man, remember you're British! That fair gave me a touch of the vapours! It's a top yoke...
As for the over-zealous circumcision of the grips, I recall doing the same to my Datatool Therma Grips when I installed them. How did I resolve that little problem? Simple. I just avoid looking too closely.
Sorry! I grew up calling it that because of mountain biking! But then, it was all Scott, Marin, Kahuna, Specialized et al so British terminology didn't get a look in!! I was about to rely upon the same solution as you. Very happy to have unearthed the old bar weights though!
I'm sure there were less cables on the space shuttle.
I think you're probably right!!
Heated gloves,, one pair, all bikes :)
…or both grips *and* gloves 😊
The Control unit on my Oxfords is partly broken. The LED which is iluminated when the lowest setting is on isn't working. I hope polo will give me a new pair :D
I've got stranded with an empty battery last week
Oh dear! That's not great. Is it still in warranty?
Andy Man Cam I bought them 3 months ago, but I don't know if this fault is covered by warranty. And then there is the hassle of dismounting them :D
+Nils Oberheim Yeah that would be a faff!
A link to the gorgeous tool kit please AMC, thank you.
Gladly dear! amzn.to/2DC01Go
You're too kind sir, on order as we speak. Thanks.
Enjoy! It's REALLY rather special!
Does the battery-saving mode on the Oxford heated grips play well with the Thunderbox you now have?
Where did you get the hand guards/windbreakers from?
Ebay they were rubbish!
@@AndyManCam I need some, actually I needed some-my hands were burning from the cold.
I love the Andyism’s as the over enthusiastic punter said to the experienced hooker the rubber just popped off 🤣
Haha! I forgot about that one!
Question, I'm about to install these on my Inazuma because the throttle heated grip failed (different brand) how did you manage to take these off your Versys without destroying them? The glue they supply is the really tough type. Thanks!
I think I remember it being a real pain to get them off. Although the glue still held on on one and actually pulled the end off the grip. Mostly there was just lots of twisting. And swearing!
@@AndyManCam haha nice one I think I'll just forfeit many have failed getting them off based on internet research and ended up ruining the grips
What windscreen do you have?
Jobs a good'n. Just an idea but as for your controller mount, it looks like your reservoir and clutch area set up is pretty similar ye olde MT. To mount my controller I used a step drill to get a hole as big as the mirror screw thread on the tapered part of the controller mount and sandwiched the mount between the mirror and mount. Make sense? I dunno, must be something useful for ya from this yabbering! 😬
+LammyIOW Nice idea mate. Might be worth a look. Although I've gone back to bar end mirrors again so I'll have to find a bolt with the right thread first. 🙄
Andy Man Cam Groovy. From memory, Yamaha mirrors use an M8 bolt and maybe with a fine pitch... How about that for some useless assistance!
I'll have to take a trip down to Baumarkt and see what they've got. Would be cool to also simultaneously use the RAM mount ball that I just go from China. Forgot I'd even ordered it!!
Those deliveries are the most enriching to a day!
+LammyIOW It's like a gift you didn't even know was coming!
.... how many times have I said "that's what she said" in this video! :D :D
If it were a drinking game, you'd have reached stomach pump status!
:D
I'm getting a slightly sticky throttle after installing my grips, somehow some glue got lodged somewhere, any suggestions?
Unfortunately I would say that disassembling it and giving it a clean will be the only way. You might even have to sand the hard glue off if there is a lot. Sorry mate!
@@AndyManCam Thanks, the glue seems to have loosened up so all is good now.
Hey ! Thanks for the tutorial dude :)
My pleasure Mickaël, thanks for watching!
great vid. question: during the warm season can you switch off the Oxford Grips at the controller or do you need to disconnect it at the battery ?
Thanks very much BP. I leave the grips connected year round and have never had a problem with them killing the battery. So the control unit is doing a fine job of keeping the power off.
1:38 Cheap hair spray. Pops right off.
Problem is that I've always found it to pop right off, a lot earlier than I'd planned for!! :D
What kind of hand guards do you use? I’m looking to get a set for my FZ1N.
They're super crap, super cheap eBay jobs. Not worth it it IMHO!
Your videos are hilarious lol subscribed
Thanks mate! Welcome aboard!!
Holy Kabelsalat ;)
I know right!! I think I may have to do something about it in the future. Not least when I change the bars as planned for something higher, as I need to change the routing to get a bit more length!
I think you have it sorted out though, nice job. Always enjoy AMC Garage!
+Itchy Scratchy Meh, it can always be a little bit neater! #OCD
I gotta GS and IMHO Oxford grips are king, muchly superior and very hotterly gripperlies.
+Flatcap007 Agreed! I had Daytona grips on my FZS600 and they were utter pants compared to these ones.
"My little sexual chocolate toolkit". ah ha ha ha a ha ah ha. Also, I just realised you never filmed la montage du Ermax screen! My tax dorrars!!! You have been spending zem in Amsterdam with ze big green man, ja?
+disekjoumoer If tools can be sexy, that set is IT! The screen fitting was a longwinded and ultimately boring ordeal. The screen cost only 20€ from the Louis fleamarket because it came with no bolts or fixings, so i had to sift through my collection of odds and sods to make it stay on the bike. I figured that such a video was no use to man nor beast as everybody who had the screen would have completely different parts!
Old chewing gum and super glue, is what I would use. Fakeedit: You are about the only guy on youtube who does real world useable budget bikes as opposed to the I-review-my-20000€-Touratech-BMW-while-slumming-in-Monaco crowd
Haha! I wasn't far off from resorting to that! Luckily I found a stash of ACTUAL bolts left over from a different project! Thanks very much mate. I'm pretty confident that even if I had the money, I'd still keep doing the same kind of nonsense. I'd hate to have a 20k€ bike that I can't fettle with for fear of voiding the warranty / causing 30k€ worth of damage!! :D I also really enjoy the fact that my 11 yr old Fazer could probably still hold it's own with many of the super fancy supernakeds available today. Except I'd have a bigger grin because I'd saved 10 grand!! :D
You have spent to much time in Germany 😂
Possibly! Don'T tell her indoors that though!
