What does basic training consist of?
@@lewisbentley3177 Scales, arpeggios and maybe some Hanon exercises. Playing with a slow metronome as well. It works well with step 3.

You are right. My first lesson when I was 72 after recovering from chemotherapy. Never too late to learn.
2/100 gives me hope. I started learning to play the piano when I was 10. In my teenage years I got to play the Fantasie Impromptu (and other difficult pieces) pretty well. Then I stopped playing and forgot EVERYTHING. Now that I am 80, listening to you Maestro and other wonderful artists , watching tutorials on RUclips I decided to force myself to learn how to play again. Need to buy myself one of those portable pianos.....
Go for it!!! I played during 10 years from 8 to 18 and then completely stopped for 20 years. Didn't touch a key. Then I bought 'one of those portable pianos' two years ago but only touched it every now and then... An then came the first lockdown one year ago, and I began to play every day... and never stopped since. And I'm soooo happy!!! Go for it!!!!

Lang Lang: Learns 8 golden rules. Applies them every day, consistently, lives and breathes them, achieves massive success and respect.
Everyone one else: Watches video. Bookmarks it. Tries it a couple days, then goes back to the usual habits. Result - no change.

I was in that state for quite a time. Always played the same pieces over and over again.
But now, mostly due to homeoffice and not working full time, I started to play again regularly. I learned Rondo alla turca in about two weeks and totally happy that I learned something new

@GluManDa. Great! I would advise you, however, to avoid the jazz/pop "version" of Rondo alla Turca that was one of Yuja Wang's go-to encores back in the days when we could actually go to concerts.

I started falling in love with piano recently, I have been playing for at least somewhere around 8 years but recently switched teachers and now I don’t want to stop practicing 🎹🎵🎶😍😆🥰
Sight reading is my biggest obstacle!
It's something that has to be learnt over time. Sight reading is like speaking another language. You learn languages by starting easy, then improving. You don't start learning to read by reading Lord of the Rings in kindergarten, but by listening and reading children books. Same with sight reading. It may take years to perfect, but if you practice enough for maybe around a few months, you should be able to get through a lot of pieces.
It may surprise you to learn that some of the biggest names in classical music are not very adept at sight reading. Don't worry about it. Just learn the piece in whatever way makes you feel comfortable.

Lang Lang gets a lot of negative comments because he is himself and expresses music according to himself. He is a genius and if anyone wants to give any negative comments about him, they should get where he is in his achievements before they are Qualified to comment.

Passion , I love watching you play. I’m a humble pianist play for the elderly. The only difference is I am now one of them!!
I LOVE this. I have not been practicing for decades...after spending years 4--21 taking intense piano lessons multiple per week. So, I love the idea of devoting just one hour of my day to practice. I'm an attorney...so very busy. Maybe I can cut out watching the TV news....or watching piano players on RUclips.
I cut out TV and replaced it with practising piano, much happier.

In the words of another artist - a martial artist ----- 'emotional content' ! Lang Lang is a special artist. He was definitely born with a certain special ability already. But his words and recommendations will certainly help us regular folks out a lot! He is good .... very good.

Hearing him say you can start at any age is very comforting, I started at the age of 28 - closer to 29 and you can feel the weight of being too late everyday.
Well I started a year ago at 32, and can play Chopin nocturne op.9 no.2 today. Its not a very difficult piece but still it's Chopin 😂 Believe me, with persistence and passion anything can happen! (a good teacher helps a lot, too) The best age of learning something you like is the age you are at now!
I think back in the day we thought that growing neurons is the future. While the brain is elastic and u should learn some things early on.. it s the connection between neurons. Music is everywhere. We need ppl to tap into the notes wherever they are and express. The different expressions make for interesting music. Manufactured music is great to start and have structure but ultimately it is self expression that we look for. Problem with music is that u have to use logic which can be unmusical to learn music theory and techniques. And by the time we have fubdamentLs we are too burned out to be musical. And that’s sad but also why we have many musical skeletons (ppl who tried and quit). The point is to stay motivated and keep trying. And be proud even if I make little progress.

Thank you for this video maestro.! My story is that about seven years I saw on TV Andras Schiff play J. S. Bachs preludes and fugues books 1 and 2. I had an epiphany.! Is that the word.? I have to try and do this or as many as I can. Talk about frustration.!! The hardest I've worked in my life. After seven years.? It's coming together. I believe the secret is not to play what you cannot read. Reading is everything. If I ever write an autobiography I will call it "chasing langlang". I doubt very much if I'll play that well. Again thank you for the music.

Lang Lang's parents has turned out him to become career of pianist. His parents are key and very important role. Without his parents's turned out, Lang Lang was impossible to be pianist. We are known that Lang Lang learn piano from 4 years old.
But he has something called passion and talent. Parents and teachers can only pushed children to play good enough but to be able to play like him you need more ofc
funnily enough, his first major teacher threw him out of the academy beause he thought he had no talent. Just goes to show, I guess.

Almost every boy has a football. It doesn't mean he will be a professional soccer player later even if his dad coaches him everyday for hours. So of course to have a piano at home is better in order to become a pianist but it is not enough.

Start with just one hour: 20 hrs tech, then 20 hrs small sections, then 20 hrs expression. Repeat daily until completely proficient.

I didn´t even know those
I m 72 just beginning a few months ago by trial and errors through multimedia you tube and reference books. Even though its was difficult when facing hurdles during practices ，I would take a break by refereeing to books, listening to songs， music etc. and return to practices thereafter. for a retiree learning piano or any musical instruments was a good way to keep our mind occupied,active and the feeling of flowing with the music was enjoyable. My reading of the book "journey of a thousand miles" by Lang Lang do gave encouragement and much enlightenment on enduring in to my interest . Thank you Lang Lang for your on of the best advices and your contribution to the musical world for all !
The most important one seems to be that If you play with other instruments in a chamber music context you become a good imitator of those instruments or voices on the piano. I belief that might be true.

i have strong fingers and hands from playing on submarine 13 guages on my guitar for 8 years but with piano i feel like i have trouble memorizing the songs I'm trying to learn lol, I'll start on a piece and get decent on a section until I try it again the next day and my fingers completely forget how to play
I’m 64. Lang Lang says I can start. But he says I need 2 brains and I’m noticing that I used to have 1 brain but it’s diminished to 0.9 brain. I might wait.
Definitely start! I started last year at 64 and now that I'm 65 I can play a few (modest) pieces very well. It's excellent for your brain to learn new things at this age. Jump in and do it--the rewards are worth it.

"Play with passion" : the reason why I will not continue because I'm frustrated by the difficulty. The only pieces I still can play with passion are Brahms's 15th waltz, "Kalinka" and Bach's Prelude in C.

Passion usually comes after knowing a piece very well. Dont worry about passion until you get the piece learned

I've been learning piano on and off since i was 4 and now am almost 50 But the piece that Im learning now, (pathetique) was played by little girl who had just playing for 5 years. And she played better than I do Haha..
I started to learn piano @11. Now , i barely play. You need talent , passion, perseverance and great infrastructure around you. Playing bach, beethoveen , Motzar , Chopin the way they were written can get boring and frustrating . I agree that we need to create , recreate. Be us! Be like _Lang Lang_ - the gift lol

Playing with passion? What does that actually mean? When I make a mistake and bang the keys in frustration, that’s passion. I think playing with passion really means playing with knowledge of where and how the phrase is going/arriving and then leading listeners to follow the journey. You can’t have musical ‘passion’ without knowledge too.
Not true. You can be passionate to a music and not to be a musician. The passion is the feeling you have for that music and how you want it to sound, ofc you can't play that music completely different of its purposes. Hitting ur keyboard isn't a passion, it's anger.
