Thompson Twins - Kamikazi

- Thompson Twins performing Kamikazi from the album Quick Step and Side Kick, on an unknown TV programme. Must be around 1983. I really wanted a pair of those sunglasses...and I just had a flashback of practising Tom's robot dance in my bedroom...oh the shame...
Saw them perform live at a club in Boston Massachusetts called The Channel, then hung out with them after the club closed the doors. It was their first performance in the U.S., and one of the most memorable nights of my life. They were incredible! Tom, and Alannah were very sweet, and very polite, but I think it was a bit of a culture shock to them. Joe on the other hand desperately wanted to continue partying and see more of the city, but back then Boston didn't have much of a nightlife due to the "blue laws". I think his enthusiasm was a bit concerning to Tom, and Alannah because they were to perform the next night at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Absolutely love them to this day.
I was at the Royal Court Gig in Liverpool 83 they filmed it put it out on Video
I know his glasses were cool, but this song is way beyond that.
This song brings me back to all kinds of things. Love it with all my heart.
They made some incredible Pop songs that still stand the test of time!
But this has always been my favourite! I am an original 1977 'pUnK rOcKer'! dx
I can relate to this song's lyrics word by word. It takes my soul and sends it soaring high above the places I miss so much
A Time when a pair of glasses could change your life.
it's not the glasses, it's the song.
Promoting proper eye protection from UV rays, good example to us all.
Imagine if someone today could hear this how we heard it so many years ago. This would change your life. There were so many really great songs back then, but this does stand out as different, special, life changing.
Community based.
It starts there
Indeed
Hmmmm, I will try that upon my unsuspecting guests. 😳🤔😜
@@davidgarris2513 I wonder how you would do that. I would love to be there.
imagine if an actual kamikaze pilot circa 1941 heard this shit
Freaking luv this song. Such great memories listens to this cassette making out with my girlfriend in my 1974 Fiat X1/9.
When life was simple. TT Twins you rock.🤟
I was born in 74. Hello father.
@@deepcreep98
Sorry I missed you😎
OMG, I too had a red Fiat X1/9 when I discovered TT in high school!
What a beautiful song, so moving, ethereal and delicate. Takes me to a happy and distant place. Love to the band -x-
I live like the album version of this song but this tv show version with the darker tone of that synthesizer brings all the right elements together. Perfection on a perfect song. There will never be another Thompson Twins.❤
How have I only just come across this song?! Beautiful, haunting... playing it on a loop now!❣️
OMG ... talk about bringing back memories! This was the first song they performed when they opened for The Police during the Synchronicity tour. I'd gone for The Police but left an instant fan of Thompson Twins. Definitely marked the beginning of my British New Wave phase. :)
Damn THEY OPENED FOR THE POLICE ???? WOW WHAT A SHOW. NOW THATS A DVD !!!!!
@@garysmith8073 They did indeed ... at least for the leg of the tour that hit Winnipeg. I can still remember being mesmerized by the opening to that song. My very first concert too. Guess I was about 15. And that album is still on regular rotation in my iTunes all these years later.
@myutube68 I was at that concert, too! Day on the Green, 1983! The Fixx, Madness, Oingo Boingo, the Thompson Twins and the Police! I love and miss the hell out of this song!
@@frantascias Yes! Was there too, not Winnipeg, but Oakland Coliseum. What a day, what a lineup. I remember this song, had never heard it before, but it stuck with me ever since.
@@moreld1 dammit!!! I was at the Oakland Coliseum too 💜💜💜💜💜
I liked the the Thompson twins back in the day... but, man I now realize how much I underestimated them. Brilliant!
When I die I will have this as my funeral song. God bless the Band. Thank you so much. We love your souls..
Cool glacier glasses. I had to have those in '85 too...and wore them daily until they disintegrated. Loved TT from 83 to 87.... Kept checking on them through college, etc....through all the genres of music. Sad that the group...and their marriage broke apart. Didn't know these videos existed then. Glad for having RUclips!
Tom Baily is so beautiful, I love him
Same 😂 lol
He was hella gorgeous =^)
Tom Bailey is gorgeous. Love Thompson Twins
I played this to death in '83!!
In the US the album was originally released with the title "Side Kicks" on the Arista Records label. I used to have it on cassette, which contained several bonus remixes of songs not on other formats at the time.
I have that vinyl record in storage. Yupp, Sidekicks. :)
My very first boyfriend had the US album Side Kicks and loaned it to me in 1983 the night we met.
I played it over over and again and now reminds me of that time like it was yesterday.
I'm ever so grateful.
I always thought it was interesting that Thompson Twins used a live rhythm section when they toured. On the albums, it's a drum machine and synth bass on most of their stuff.
Probably to give the experience a richer sound, and visuals. 3:)
@@echospaw899 It also occurs to me that the drum machine and sequencer memory back in those days was extremely limited. You could only have one song loaded into the thing at any given time, and it took too long to load the next song, for the purposes of doing a tight live show. They could have used two or three drum machines, but they probably figured they better of just having a live drummer. And yeah, having a bassist who moved around, or could be backlit behind a scrim onstage was probably visually interesting than having a guy standing at a synth doing left hand bass all night.
Leaving alone. Flying above you. I'm not coming home. You know.....
Love them! Sidekicks and In the Name of Love...2 awesome albums
Quick Step and Side Kick is still an epic album!
1984 live at the Ritz NY🫶🏻✨
I Loved this song so much.........Thompson Twins performed it a Magic Mountain many times in the early 80's.
I love this song so much. They lyrics are poignant.
This song was Vaporwave before Vaporwave even existed.
Fabulous. Timeless. Haunting. Amazing. Simple yet mesmerizing.
Love that bad ass Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Synth
I saw them live in San Diego, CA in 83' ... I was 10! I shook all of their hands from the audience to the stage.
Would you believe I'm just getting hip to this song ???? I saw them on tv do it. Didn't think it was an actual song . WOW WHAT A COOL PIECE OF MUSIC !!!!!
I first seen this when I was 15. It always stuck in my mind. Absolutely epic very dark synth and always looks so cool 😎
tee hee...the bottom lip always got me too!! how funny...i always had a deep rooted hatred for allanah though, such jealousy!! i met them once, not long after this video, and they were so lovely...all except her! we were only around 13/14 at the time and had sneaked off school to spend the day waiting for them...they were really lovely to us, and kept coming out to see us...in the end joe gave us £5 to get a taxi home after the gig as we'd spent all our money...so sweet!
I cant get this on Spotify or any media in the US...I even uploaded some of my own music to my spotify playlist, but it avoided this one.
doesn't he?? i was so in love with him around this time...looking back on it now, they were really grubby looking before they became all cartoonish!!
Fuck i loved the eighties best time best era
And there he is on the drums: Boris Williams. Awesome.
Who?
Boris Williams!
Its true! I didnt realize that. Boris and Roger together pre-Cure. Awesome.
Joey Levenson Truly awesome ... so amazing. I didn’t realize that this was Boris and Roger pre-Cure either, sweetheart. Thank you for saying that because I had no idea and I love both Thompson Twins and The Cure so very much, darling. Kisses from one fan to another. 💕❤️🌹😘💕
Thank so much for posting this gem!
I killed this album and 'Gap' to death. Soul savers.
Fantastic great to see see actual live performance
I appreciate the 1980's bass without head tuners. Bassists are usually confused anyway .I'm not making fun of this song at all, I love this as one of my all time favorites. just appreciate the 80s vibe
Cipher the video
Oh the college memories this song brings back. Thx TT!
A million thanks for these superb postings

I havent yet saw that same model of glasses yet all the ones Ive saw have oval shaped lenses. They are the coolest looking things and I'm wonering if I could get away with wearing these on holiday in place of my ordinary glasses lol.
Ended up I bought a pair years ago although the arms are quite tight..The brand he is wearing Julbo and model Vermont
What's great here, and am hard pressed to think of other's that did and certainly don't now, is this was actually played live. Really cool on a variety of levels. It was great to see them on this tour in support of The Police's Synchronicity. The white signature white umbrellas from that leg too. Leeway though...reduced to sitting in the back and kinda/sorta playing a bongo that no one can here. 🤔
loved the Thomson twins
great song!!! and wot a great band too!!!!!..havnt seen this live version yet...so thanx for that xx
Yes..I was in 6th grade and I would daydream for hours about these sunglasses and Tom's insanely long and thick pony tail. Somehow my rat tail just could never compare 🤣. Is it me or does Tom seem totally stoned here?! LOL...
Thompson Twins were way up there on my favorite New Wave artist list. Like most of them, they had there time, (these guyz were huge though), and then just fizzled out. I would love to hear an act that is a combination of Thompson Twins and Missing Persons... that would be the sh*t right now! Thanks for posting this. 3:)
Hello is very thompson twins here in colombia
God this is amazing
I so love this song
WOW! thank you SO much for posting this!!!! this is amazing!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome!
joe is now a hypnotherapist in LA...who'd a thunk it??
Brilliant love this song
Wow... havent heard this before... Thanks for posting...
They were kind of like The Cure; artsy, moody and Post Punk but could also write a good pop song
@ToxicPunkRules - They are called Desert Sunglasses. The one's Tom is wearing are harder to find now, but I used to have a pair back in Jr High School.
Very cool these guys rawk! and yeah those shades are cool very steam punk!
Someone mentioned Tube I think it's a programme what took over Tube called Switch.
Nice song!
I knew those guys in those days when they were chart toppers .
funny thing is they shaved off your eyebrows eyebrows generally don't grow back for a decade or ever.
nice glacier glasses I remember putting on some and trying to drive no peripheral vision not good on L.A. freeway haven't heard this song in over 25 years.........................
thank you for posting great video
Knew them?
That bass line though...
@ToxicPunkRules They are actually julbo mountaineering/glaciering sunglasses. Just go to ebay and type in julbo sunglasses and you'll find them. I bought mine off there for about 128. Very 80's and you'll get some looks but a lot of people will think they're cool and different.
@ToxicPunkRules probably won't help, but we called them glacier glasses.
Bet you can find them at an outdoor sports shop.
We bought them at the local gas stations when they were "hot"
This is amazing.
Don't suppose anyone knows where Tom Bailey got his kick ass glasses? I love them too! :D
They were a parting gift from your mom 😉
Wow never seen this live
Ive benen able to find out that the brand of glasses are Julbo and are supposed to be for mountaineering etc as they cut out uv light. Ive just saw a clip where Pete Burns in the 80's was wearing the same pair and Also at the end of the Ian Dury movie Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll Andy Serkis can be seen wearing a red pair. Your right they do look kick ass lol I have a friend who would also love a pair.
@pitkinator
@pitkinator
go to Amazon, you can download this mp3, just search Thomson Twins Kamakazi. I always thought this was one of there best songs, love it.
i'd only agree if they limited it to performing quick step and into the gap...although the chances of them having a reunion seem a little bleak...she now makes chairs with bits of dead animals stuck on them and isn't tom a producer...not sure what happened to jo...they were great live, i agree!
Try ski & snow shops for those sunglasses (or similar types)
@ToxicPunkRules you used to be able to get them from kensigton market...i coveted them and for some reason never bought them...damn...if i had them i'd send them to you!
@ToxicPunkRules probably won't help, but we called them glacier glasses.
Bet you can find them at an outdoor sports shop.
Go to Grandmaster Flash to drum up memories
For some reason, It's VERY hard to find a vocal or full version of this song. Last one I knew was 9 minutes long and was a club mix. Someone uploaded a Vinyl rip but it was the only one in their RUclips playlist taken down. I wonder why. Mabye the title? I have no idea.
Is this video from an MTV New Year's Eve program from around 1983, 1984? I recall watching it.
A time when you could play xylophone in playback
神風 カミカゼ
its live on tv?!? cool
odd that music and groups thought trite could elicit such a viceral reaction
Kamikazi la pronuncia inglese.
What synth was tom playing at the intro. Cheers
Prophet V 👍
He's dead in the song, isn't he?
Is this song a suicide note?
Tom Bailey looks like a living mannequin.
Ridicoli...
sorry not soory(typo)
This song puts such a human face on hatered and fear and also the belief system.Makes me wonder about the justification of any war at all.Soory not being political it just seems that music makes you stop and consider....
Nice bass line, who is the player?
Bass playing courtesy of Andrew Bodnar, also longtime Graham Parker associate, and player on various evergreens eg Watching the Detectives, I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass.
Thanks, good info
Zorro?
Your dad 👍

6 "persons" are spam👾👾👾👾👾👾
I wish that Tom Bailey would take his sunglasses off so I can see his eyes.
Ha. I hear ya but I'm sure he had a buzz.
@eva93618 are you blind ?
What a brilliant group
Brilliant love this song
