Chicago. Late night. Early 1990's: An underground/alternative radio station played this and I had to just stop what I was doing and listen. This was my hypnotizing initiation into the beauty of Cocteau Twins - - - Fast forward - - - Columbus, OH. Late night. Early 2000's: VH1's late-night video program: I'm working at the desk in my office, and this video comes on. I remembered the song well, now I was seeing the visual for the first time. In a truly arresting case of Deja Vu, first I glanced up, then I just stopped what I was doing to watch and listen, mesmerized by the sheer mystery and magnificence of a rare creativity. That did it. I went on Amazon and eBay and bought every recording in their catalog. Done.
I love this song, I come here a few times a week to watch this video.. The more time goes by the more I love Liz, the more I find her so beautiful in all she creates; and it makes me sad that I'll never get to hear this band play together again.
So many people have a hard time with the fact that most of Liz Frazer's singing was abstract. For Cocteau twins fans it is the vocal style (and obviously the incredible music) that made them so distinctive. I've always thought that people who didn't like her singing style, simply have staid and conservative ideas about music. I guess the production and drum machine sound kind of puts some of their music into an era, but the level of creativity and emotion is staggering. I hear new bands these days and they sound so dated due to their plagiarism of 80's pop and indie. The Cocteaus were modernist and experimental in their day, constantly pushing forward and challenging their audience. I can think of very few such brave acts these days (apart from the German band To Rococo Rot)
Well, I just would like to have the pleasure of singing their songs in the shower without saying "eminodeneses sequechifomasíes forenelefangue indablumenoodeneses..." and whatever comes to my mouth 😂 will always love this band! 🥰
Watched this on the Tube on the day the TV was broadcast and glad to see it again. Awesome soundscapes by all... Bass all warm, guitar all icy, taped drums all earth, and vocal all ethereal. Love the Twins.
Cocteau Twins quite simply and consistently created the most alluring music ever to be released to the world. They may not have been comfortable with the high degree of praise they've received, but hey, no one else produced this level of quality music for a short time, they did it on every release. There is no other music act, regardless of genre, that I can say that about. They learned the secret that Brian Eno knew. Layer simplicity to create complexity, give it killer tone like no one else's, have vocals that are alluring and keep you coming back to try to unravel some meaning or secret (there doesn't have to be one, the fun is in the looking), you also have to be lucky enough to find a very unique vocalist (the other stuff, generating tone, programing drum machines, manipulating guitar effects, using the studio, learning to play guitar, bass, and keyboard, all can be learned, but the vocal ability, that has to already be there. If they are pretentious, more bands should try it.
@@sandwichsteen I've never understood that. Treasure is my 3rd favorite album (behind Garlands and Head Over Heels), but it has my all-time favorite song, by anyone, and that's Persephone. I love the Big Band sound of the drum machine (thanks to the sampling of my favorite R&R drummer, John Bonham) and that snapping guitar paired with that melodic bass line. Elizabeth couldn't help but to push it's greatness with her melody line. They always calmed that the songs on Treasure were unfinished. If that's unfinished I think more bands should put out unfinished work...though I still don't think it would help most bands.
I can still remember the first time I saw this on the Tube. Loved it ever since and still memorised by the tune. Cocteau Twins are one of those unique bands of their time....
It's rather pedantic, but this (The Tube) was just a regular UK tv program on over-the-air (terrestrial) television at 17h30 on a Friday with live guests - so technically they were tv presenters not 'vjs'!
That drum machine (some Roland pre-808 maybe?) totally inspired my obsession with electronic music and synths. While everyone was listening to Fergie and all that crap around 2006, I was diving deep into my university studies and deep into Cocteau Twins. I can say I'm forever thankful.
Really good performance of this one. Good mix and clear audio overall. Nice to not have to pay a drummer and keyboard player. Hahaha! Seriously, though, thank you for posting this. CT are one of my favorites and so many recording of their live performances are in poor condition. This one is a treat!
The most beautiful, dreamy, like I'm in a movie in slow motion and dont want it to stop. Want more!! I would love to hear EVERYTHING they have, simply amazing
This upload is by far the best quality of this performance on youtube. I used to think this version was dwarfed by the album version. Upon hearing it with better quality, I must say this certainly rivals the album version. However, I think Guthrie's guitar is better on the album. A little too "guitary" for me on this performance. Forgive me, I need to comment on this song because this is my favorite song of all time. Should be yours too ;)
the tube, great show, remember this , fan at the time and waited for this to come on as a video wonderful ep twinset too tiny dynamine and echos in a shallow bay, plain tiger, sultitan itan, pink orange red, ribbed and veined. pale clouded white, eggs and their shells, great spangled fritillery, melonella.lovely art work, 23 envelope always good on their stuff at this period. thanks for this so good to see it again.
Lucky enough to see them live 3 times. I have never seen this video. At a solo tour i asked why the videos were never on a comp. The band apparently hated them.
basically. the Cocteau twins at this time achieved a sound that became very influential. (I've had a few, so I'll do my best to articulate). Since 1982/3 their style evolved pretty quickly and the vocal and musical aspects; more and more experimental and daring. The evolution of both the vocals and music became uncommonly synchronised. From round 1982 - 1990 they developed a style of music that had no precedent. The whole 'cant understand the lyrics' remark is irrelevant, and fails to recognise the sheer scale of creativity, vision, and focus of this band.
I fell in love with MBV and ran into slowdive both of whom I loved dearly. But when I finally found Cocteau Twins my mind was blown, they have a spiritual element to their music in that it feels like so much more than it is. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling all over my body.
Not really. They are among first, and the most celebrated dream pop/ shoegaze bands. The majority of their albums are very highly received as well. Everyone who enjoys this type of music recognizes that Cocteau Twins started it all ...
It's hard to explain this to people who don't get it. Liz was such a weirdo but she was the prototype for a magical exploration of vocal capacity in the way Bob Dylan was for poetry- I swear if female vocalists now dared to tap the ore she drew from we'd have good music again.
It’s funny you mention Bob Dylan, as his singing in this song ( ruclips.net/video/kAebdvILNco/видео.html ) kinda reminded me of Liz’s, in the sense that you can barely understand him, yet the emotions are still incredibly overwhelming.
It's a human tragedy that the Voyager launched out to space not carrying this music. This was made for them. Now we are priviting it to all those aliens that were supposed to be listening this. That was our only chance to grasp their attention.
I just realized that the sound and the shapes that the guitar makes is like the flapping of a butterfly, specially in the section at 02:43 . A plain tiger butterfly.
Guess what. The soccer players on 4:25 beat us to it around 1985 about 30 years ago. I'm referring to the fad in the US when various groups of people were freezing all movement at the same time on TV or video a few years ago. Now that was neat.
Not trying to decipher anything, just saying what it sounds like to me. What is more cringeworthy is the people who look down their noses at others and pass judgement to make themselves look superior.

The music is not even melodious. That's why the band tends to be "underrated."
They also hate their most well-regarded album, for whatever reasons.

Great track and I was the sound guy that recorded this at Trillion studio's in London!
This is the greatest video on RUclips. One of the greatest songs ever made. I pray this stands the test of time for the future. 🙏
Surely the best female vocalist ever!!! perfection with the guitars soaring to keep up with liz. SUBLIME

Check out Boards of Canada, John Foxx & Harold Budd, Jega & Casino Vs. Japan. You might like them or not. Just throwing it out there.
This is a fantastic group, but fergie is good in her own way. They can both be good in their own separate forms...
