THE HYDROPHOBIC PROPERTIES WERE EXACTLY LIKE YOURS ON THE BLACK HOOD which I absolutely loved!
Awesomesauce! This one is going to be super-informative & clear up some questions a lot of us have that no one REALLY seems to know the answer to. (I think it’s time for me to donate to your channel.)
Thanks Scott! This is going to be a really interesting test. I'm just a DIY amateur and since 2018 have been using Meguires Hybrid Ceramic Spray. For my best results, I wash as best I can then do 1 layer dry application, 1 layer wet application and a final layer of their spray on and rinse application. I get good shine and beading that lasts about a year. Throughout the year I do occasional quick spray washes. I'm in New England and do not have a garage to park in.
I don't know how I missed this one yesterday. So weird to think think I'm excited to watch videos of a hood being washed for 2 years, but I am haha. Even the dog knows it's interesting. It's good to have a hood with chips and scratches because a lot of us have those. It's good to see how the product protects them and the bare metal. I really like how you did this with 1-5 layers too.
Fantastic! This is the best of the best of videos. Questions are answered. For a pro detailer, it’s the equation of protection vs your pocket vs your reputation that counts. How many times you add a layer just to get a bit longer on but was it worth the 1 hour wait vs using it to make more money. This is a question that NONE has answered till now! Good man Scott!
I have used the griots 3&1 it has performed very well for me when applying it is very slick also very easy to apply but please note my vehicle stay in the garage and they are both White they are daily drivers Scott thanks for all your helpful knowledge
I have a white vehicle that stays in the garage in SW MO. Spring 2020 I started with one coat of Griot's 3-in-1. Fall I added two coats. Spring 2021 onward, two coats in the spring, fall one topper coat of Jescar Ceramic Wax (noticeable gloss). 👍
Scott your brain works on a totally different level you think of so many different things and wave the tackle it it's pretty awesome this is going to be a very cool test looking forward to seeing the final results thank you so much for how detailed you get with everything it's really cool
I’m not making this up- I put Griots…on top of Fusso…on silver-plated horns for a marching band. All I can tell you is that products like Fusso and Collinite will always be in my arsenal, and Griots is simply too affordable not to throw-on anything as a topper. The shine it creates is really different. But that’s polished metal. Two coats of Fusso on any dark car is kind of like enjoying pain. You better really want it and hope you’re better for it after. Separate but still noteworthy- my only frustration with ceramic spray products is the spotting that dried liquids (water on cars, sweat on instruments) leave on the surface. Sure a QD can fix that, but unless there’s serious sheeting going on it’s not a good look after a rain session. That reason alone is what keeps me using tin-paste sealants.
Brilliant new challenge Scott , and I am so glad you have nano bond and fuso 99 amongst the products, as I think they are excellent in gloss and durability 🇬🇧
I've layered Fuso back when I lived in North Dakota due to the aggressive chemicals they use to spray the roads in winter. I never noticed any difference, and I let it cure over night in the garage. I applied it as lightly as I possibily could while still getting it on the paint. Never had an issue taking it off after it sat over night (granted it was normally the start of winter when I applied so cool). Mostly just wanted to give it time to fully cure in suboptimal temps. Never noticed any difference with it be 1 or 2 coats, just felt it increased the likelihood I didn't miss a spot by accident. I would get about 9 months before I felt I had nothing left too it. --- Also I don't really care about product thickness, but once it cures could you let us know if you could feel any difference over the multiple layers?
Such a bad-ass test. I’ve done this to some extent, albeit for my own disorder/interest. I think multiple coatings of something like Fusso absolutely works, but at the expense of gloss. Also, as your outdoor tests show, it’s really a matter of how long crap like pollen is allowed to fester in any protection. If you put two coats of Collinite Fleetwax/915 on a garage queen…hang it up. It’s good forever. 😂
Some of the previous tests I've gone to the trouble of testing UV and it ends up that basically NONE of them provide any proven UV protection - proven UV protection is sunscreen (which I used in the same test to prove an example).
Really eager to see the results. I predict the 2-3 layers may fare better than the 4-5; my assumption is that these chemicals have a carrier/solvent that when applied again it softens but doesn't completely remove the previous layer(s), I feel like on the 5th layer more material was removed than what may have been applied, hence the gum-up.
There was an issue awhile back with it - hit unsubscribe, resubscribe and then hit the bell notification icon again. It was due to the "made for kids" that I accidentally checked the box in my settings and it was apparently a big ordeal to un-do it. One subscriber figured out that the trick is if you were a subscriber when it happened to just unsubscribe and resubscribe. Problem solved
This is going to be an interesting test. I suspect the increased removal difficulty would have diminished if the cure time was extended on final layers. My best guess is that the solvents haven't flashed enough and the bottom layers were only partially cured, causing a grabby feeling. I'm thinking much the way paint will soften and lift if recoat windows are too short. With that said, I'm hoping the lower layers still remained bonded and were not leveled off with the final layers.
I’ve done 1 layer of griots on my mother in-laws car and 2 on my wife’s car, I feel like my wife’s car faired better than my mother in-law’s. My wife’s coating (done in October) lasted through New England winter with no problem and I just reapplied a single coat this past weekend. My mother in-laws (applied within 2 weeks from my wife’s initially) I’d say lost its hydrophobic-ness about 2 months ago

next video you should mix a few drops from each ceramic bottle into a empty bottle. make the ultimate ceramic mix. since each one has its goods and bads.
Interestingly the instructions that came with CarPro SIC say 1-2 coats, no more than 3. I put 2 on the half of my car that has clear coat and 3 coats on the half that doesn't have clear coat. last year I tried UK 3.0 but it only lasted a few months on the non clear coated panels.
On the Griots bottle it states "for extreme durability apply a second coat 12-24 hours after the first application". Wouldn't this mean the way you applied the griots is incorrect? Love and appreciate all your video's, i dont want to come off as "that guy"
It is, and you are correct, but I simply did not have the time to hang around for 2.5-5 days to apply 5 coats of it... I did disclose that and we are going to see if it makes a difference.

@@ScottHD was the solvent if i reckon correctly. If you are afraid about ceramic coatings, this is the second product you could try. Best part is you can re-apply on those pannels were it stopped bead
I'm planning on doing something this summer. I've been researching on how it is actually lab tested and the various types of tests and what chemicals they are using. I know the real world is how it needs to be tested though!
@@ScottHD yes please, we need real world tests instead of how they are made. If you can do a 42 way testing it would be so awesome to see that. I believe you can do it on the existing panels you have, just spray hard water on them and test them, i dont think it's hard
I found a hard water deposit that was building up over the winter. I soaked it with WD-40 and lightly rubbed on it and it came off after the 2nd application. 👍
@@tedroesch9133 i get what you mean but it's more than just using something to wipe it off. A physical experiment would be great to see how the ceramic coatings react
When I use Griots 3 in 1 always apply two coats, waiting a day to apply the second coat. Depending on how vehicle cared for, up to a year. If not properly maintained, maybe 6 months? I need a recommendation on a tire coating?
Check out dura coating for tire coating. I did a very extensive test on about 50 products a year or two ago - Dura Coating and Lone Star tire coating were the two that outshined (pun intended) the competition.
J used to live nufinish. Cheap , fast and had longevity. You explained last year what happen to that product. Bought seven bottles to do car and boat bug it did not last mire then 4 to 6 Mos. I want to find the gest of what is out so I am not constantly going back.
If something says wait a certain amount of time there must be something outgassing. If you ever put a clear sticker over fresh paint you know what might happen. Interested to see
Since there is some extra space, could you add 1 square that is 1 of these coatings with a product that's been known to fail after few washes? I am curious if a sub-par product would effect performance of a good product.
3-6 months? I quit using Turtle Wax products in spring of 1979. There are too many better products out there for the same price that perform better. Back then I changed to DuPont Rain Dance, that liquid wax lasted a full 2 weeks plus longer than the Turtle Wax did.
I have been using Griots 3in1 for a couple of years. Not knowing anything about this except what I have learned from your channel I have put quite a few coats on over the year. If I had to guess perhaps 7 to 10. Car still shines like a diamond in a goats butt at the county fair. However, the car doesn't get exposed to a lot of adverse weather but I do live at high altitude so it gets its share of UV. What should I be looking for regarding deterioration?
Painters will tell you "UV" damage is when the clear coat has actually failed, so essentially it is trying to prolong the useful life of the clear coat. As long as it's hydrophobic, you are likely still good. (and your clear coat isn't failing).
Here’s a question you probably haven’t heard before, if you off set your pad on the buffer wouldn’t it do the same thing as a 15 or 22 mm throw buffer?
If when you say buffer and throw buffer you mean Rotary vs DA then, No it wouldn't at all. The center-most part of the pad (unless we are talking about a ridiculous amount of offset) is still moving 100% of the pad material as a dot around a circle regardless of the pad being perfectly centered or offset; the outer area is not covering 100% of the dot around the circle well simply because it's offset ( ._.) However a DA polisher or buffer is a "circle going around a circle" rather than a point around a circle. If you however meant DA centered pad vs DA with offset pad, the latter is not recommended as it would create vibrations; the bigger the throw the bigger the little circles go around the circle/orbit.
@@ScottHD Much appreciated for the feedback. Additionally, what are the recommendations on the pad use (how pads used, how often changed during the process), because the pads I used they don't last long.
Disappointed you didn't follow Griot's specific direction on application time... that really invalidates the results there. One of the most popular options too!!
This is a classic example of BS ambiguous claims to take advantage of an ignorant public to sell product. GG 3-in-1 Wax isn't a coating - it is a spray sealant. Translation: it doesn't actually truly cure (no cross-link), so whether you wait an hour, or 12, or 24, you are still going to remove the majority of whatever you applied before with "like dissolves like" principal. The only time you get any type of truly additive layering (ESPECIALLY beyond a second coat) is with a cross-linking cure, and even then you will run into challenges because a proper coating will reject additional layers except for a very narrow window (and even then it is not 1+1). That's my 2 cents, anyway ;)
Damn thickness meter. Should do 100 layers and see if you can measure it. .... Just kidding. Seems like a test a lot of people are very interested in this one. Don't know if anyone has done a similar test.
I have a cheap amazon thickness meter that "supposedly" reads to the nearest tenth of a micron, but on the "calibration foil" it will literally read 5 different readings on the same (known thickness) foil, so this is why I don't use it. The elcometer I use - they make a higher accuracy one, but I can't justify the price of it - this one is already pretty expensive and is used in our shop just to identify thin areas or previous paintwork on client vehicles)
I won't do too many in the summertime after these two starting may 1. Far too busy in the shop and it's hot outside (I'm a weakling when it comes to Texas summertime heat!)
Even though many are meant to be spray and wipe.. I just don't think that method is even or reliable. I use an applicator , overlap and give them a minute
I just don't sleep much. Haha. Have a M5 CS and M3 Competition in the shop right now, both for PPF, correction, coating, wheels off detail, with two more coming Friday. Oh by the way I still work in my oil and gas business too! LOL

Maybe? I guess I see your point in doing that.
@@Centaur008 I have off set my pad it ads a very slight amount of vibration
I am a novice in detailing, what are the RPMs you use on each of the detail 3 stages, i.e., compounding, polishing and wax application?
Heavy cutting you can use speed 5-6, then back it down slightly making a second pass. Finish polishing it's on a 3 almost always.
@@ScottHD Much appreciated for the feedback. Additionally, what are the recommendations on the pad use (how pads used, how often changed during the process), because the pads I used they don't last long.
Russia is 👍🔥watching
Thank you! I hope all is well over there. Cheers.
Disappointed you didn't follow Griot's specific direction on application time... that really invalidates the results there. One of the most popular options too!!
5 layers would have taken several days - my worry would be that it would start rejecting itself after that long. I see your point there though.
Huge fan of your work! Your open minded response is more proof of your objectivity!
@@clintonw1055 absolutely and thank you
This is a classic example of BS ambiguous claims to take advantage of an ignorant public to sell product.
Iv done at least 45 layers in the last year and I sware I think it looks a little better then just doing 2 layers 😂
12 to 24 hours only works if your car is parked indoors.
This is true!
what motorcycle is that in the background?
2008 Kawasaki Concours 14! I ride it everywhere!
Nano 9H is a pain to apply and remove…..just in general.
With layers it is definitely much harder!
It seems to be temperamental in higher humidity
Never had a problem with it , but it might be down to the cooler English weather!
Great. Don’t burn yourself out with all these hoods!
I won't do too many in the summertime after these two starting may 1. Far too busy in the shop and it's hot outside (I'm a weakling when it comes to Texas summertime heat!)
@@ScottHD still waiting on that MTA Hood with Bead Maker and The Last Coat. 😂. Must meet his stringent criteria.
Even though many are meant to be spray and wipe.. I just don't think that method is even or reliable. I use an applicator , overlap and give them a minute
As long as the product physically gets onto the paint and is "worked in", it really doesn't make a difference in my opinion.
👍💪
I would appreciate accelerated tests using some kind of dirt simulator. Speeds up the results somewhat
With all these tests you've been doing, it still amazes me you still have time to do ACTUAL detailing. haha
I just don't sleep much. Haha. Have a M5 CS and M3 Competition in the shop right now, both for PPF, correction, coating, wheels off detail, with two more coming Friday.
Oh by the way I still work in my oil and gas business too! LOL
Looks like loco gringos jy
It is!
Good eye!
Did you notice a difference in gloss/clarity amongst the different layers?
None whatsoever to the naked eye.
