  • I made this bench for our front entrance so that people can sit and put on their shoes. It's made from black walnut and birdseye maple. It has a modern design, almost too modern for our house, but I still like it.

This is a beautiful build. Very nice selection of wood and leg placement. Just beautiful. Easy top 3 on my favorite projects of all time.

Did you ever buy a new house? ;)

@@congruewoodworks1474 I did! About ten months ago so that I could have a much larger workshop. This bench might not fit in this house either, so I'll continue to look...

I am catching up on some of your earlier videos and this is a nice project. Walnut and maple pair beautifully for most projects, and especially for this one. It is a nice design that is well-executed.
I had to chuckle when you said your wife was less than enthusiastic about the bench. Brother, I feel your pain. DAMHIKT :-)
    Great project!

I really like this modern look bench and enjoy watching how it made. This one is my favorite so far. Oh, and your dog is very cute. You should build a dog house for him/her, and may be you can build one for us too.

Thanks, Eric. Maybe we should work on your dog house together!

Excellent build Mike, an unusual looking bench but it does grow on you quickly, really love the way the wood pops up after the stain was put on. Well Done. Ps I noticed you in the video you used your Cross Cut Sled and was wondering if there will be a video on that? Thanks.

Hi Barry. Thank you for your comment. I agree that the bench is quite unusual. It just needs the right home. Ours is a traditional "colonial" style, so the modern look doesn't quite fit. I do have a video of me making the crosscut sled. In fact, it's one of the first videos that I made. I made it with an older camera and no microphone, so the quality isn't quite as good as some of my newer videos. The sled has a cool feature that makes it adjustable. If I can get the closed captioning done, maybe I can release it this weekend.

Would be great if you could, i did check your videos and got as far as your drill press table but no sled, i'll check again but i would appreciate if you could release it again. I have seen loads of sleds being made, but yours looked different with the metal bracket at the back. Thanks. Barry.

Sorry, I wasn't clear with my reply. I shot the video several months ago, but I never released it. But you motivated me to work on the closed captioning this evening. It's a big job. I have to learn how to speak less. With any luck, I will be able to release the video on Wednesday or Thursday.

Great techniques- I am really enjoying your step by step instructions. Looking at the finished product at the end 15:35 I like your PF Jatoba flooring ( or is it Santos?)

Thanks for your comment! I put that floor in back in 2009 and I'm pretty sure it was Jatoba although the hardwood supplier calls it Brazilian Cherry, which is a little misleading. It's definitely hard stuff. I occasionally use leftover pieces in other things that I make. For example, it's an attractive wood to use as splines in joints.
