Others may find the lyrics shallow and simply written, but I think it's clever. For me, this is a POV of a kid with nonexistent parents and was always left with someone else to take care of them (in this case, the grandma). In that sense, the words doesn't have to be too articulate. It's simple, realistic, and behind the happy tunes, lies the a sad truth that's happening to most kids. My interpretation only. I might be wrong, but this is how I see it.
I love how he looked genuinely happy to make a video for this song, around his stuff, his daughter, making chaos in a room with his friends. It is honestly wholesome.
This has always been my favorite nirvana song because its so direct no metaphors no confusion. The funny thing is I think most of Kurt's writing was simple but often let the audience paint their own picture. But not this one this one is pure simplist honesty.
I just learnt yesterday that teen spirit was an actual deodorant and that time he didnt even know that just liked the graffiti writing on his wall painted by his female friend "Kurt smells like teen spirit".
This is what's so great about Nirvana ... They have the massive hits but their albums are filled with gems like this. Their album art was also fantastic ... God I miss buying their music...

The visuals of this music video are so cool and it’s so Nirvana. I love how this video shows off Kurt’s collection of anatomical models, figures, music references, and other weird stuff. The garage looks like an awesome place to check out. I love how they have a mudhoney flag and how Nirvana talked about bands that inspired them and found ways to include them in videos or the band tees they’d wear.
My mother didn't allow me to listen to this song when I was 13. We had fights almost every day and I was really depressed at that time. I think she just couldn't take the truth. The song reminded me so much of my childhood and she knew that.
@@crazysilly2914 Yes. Courtney was off doing something and he was at home with Frances the day the rest of the band came over to shoot the video. I think this song has a meaning “Mom and dad went to a show, they dropped me off at grandpa joes”- Parents dripped Kurt off at his grandparents while they went off. Grandma take me home” he wants to go home to mom and dad. He then stays with his grandparents for a while. “I woke up in my mother’s arms” he was back with his parents and he is still saying “grandma take me home” he now considers his grandparents “home”
@@Skategoodmen just coz a chorus is repeated doesnt mean it cant be used in clever ways and change meaning trhu the song. Don't know what being creative is lmfao

I love the video behind this song. It showed the band when they were all just doing what they wanted... having fun. They were the voice of a generation of kids and didn’t really get to enjoy being one themselves. They didn’t like how they were taken too seriously or that they were in the public eye. This video captures what they were all about.

pretty sure it's about his childhood, he moved around a lot and didn't feel like he belonged anywhere and this song is like his need for a space where he belongs and is accepted (im not sure just my interpretation)
From the start of this to about 0:55 the way Kurt is inflecting on the words, and his tone of voice, reminds me a bit of a cross between Syd Barrett and a young David Bowie.
I mean.. if I have to name one thing about this song that truly displays a simple yet mastered songwriting sensibility on Kurt's part is starting his vocal in a lower register and then bringing it to a scream in the 3rd and subsequent verses... The impact is huge. It's a simple trick yet the execution is brilliant and makes the hair stand.. Utterly genius.

Kurt really hated when people over analyzed his songs like this lmao

I love the video behind this song. It showed the band when they were all just doing what they wanted... having fun. They were the voice of a generation of kids and didn’t really get to enjoy being one themselves. They didn’t like how they were taken too seriously or that they were in the public eye.
This video captures what they were all about.
