  • h'yellooooo and happy holidays!! For my last project of the year (holy wh-aaaTT), I wanted to put aside my indifference for Christmas and make a gingerbread dress! I had this design sitting in my brain for far too long, so it was time to see if I could translate it into real life. So naturally I grabbed some foam, curtains, and caulking. As you do.
ANYWHO, lots of mad experimenting going on in this video and some pleasant surprises!
I love you all and SEE YOU NEXT YEAR (hyuck hyuck hyuck)

for the texture to save you from glue and the awful kinetic sand next time, take a ball of tinfoil and roll it /all/ over the foam. it's what we use when we make minuature buildings. can also use modeling putty and a paper towel by covering the foam in putty and dabbing in with a paper towel. Studsonstudios here on youtube is quite helpful with foam techniques ngl.

This was such a creative use of different materials, I love it! The caulk especially looks just perfect for icing. Since you seemed to be struggling a bit with the piping, for future reference: put that larger plastic piece (the coupler) inside of the piping bag before putting in the icing/caulk. You can then screw on the piping nozzle of your choice. This should make it so you have better control over the bag and don't have to worry about it oozing out above the nozzle! Apologies if someone else brought this up earlier, watching this just gave me vivid flashbacks to my own piping-bag-learning-curve struggles 😆

A tip from a daughter of a ballet customer and ballet dancer herself, one of the best ways to gather tulle if you want to use a machine (and the way that is used in tutu making) is to zig-zag over fishline cut to the length you need, gather it by pulling on your line (tie loops at the end). Then you can optionally steam your gather, pin your tulle into place, zig-zag over the same stitch line for the gather, cut the line out at the end and pull it out. and do this for all your layers. This is an especially useful tip if you are trying to recreate a romantic (or platter) ballet tutu, which is sewn in tiered layers onto a basque to give it volume.
I can be intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is one of the fastest ways to gather tulle, and can even be done with multiple pieces of tulle stacked together.

I totally called it.. I was thinking she'd do something wearable but recyclable and she did... Also, that first comment with a question, "Santa?", totally did that one too, except mine was at work and involved paper lanterns that can fly. By the way, Merry Christmas y'all....

for future foam texturing, if your foam is soft enough you can use some balled up tin foil to press indents into the foam! i do that to make faux foam stone (say that three times fast lmao)
also darkening the edges of the cookie bodice was GENIUS!!!!

What a fun project :) As far as the fit, it might help to take 1/2-1 inch off the bottom of the bodice. It kinda looks like if you could pull the whole thing down a bit, it would fit perfect~ The finishings came out so cool!

Too cute! Advice from a cake decorator for next time... the coupler goes inside the bag before the frosting, the icing tip and screw cap connect to the coupler on the outside... it sandwiches the pastry bag in between the coupler and tip and will make your life so much easier.

Love this idea! As someone with a background in ballet, I see your use of Tchaikovsky! The type of costume you’re referring to is called a Romantic tutu/skirt made with many layers of tulle and often seen in ballets like Giselle and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (and every townsperson in a village scene). They are some of my favorite costumes because they’re so pretty and flouncy rather than rigid like traditional tutus. Great job on the project, enjoy your holiday break!

That dress makes me so happy. Perhaps off camera, find tulle or lace or organza or anything and finish the back of the Gingerbread Dress. The dress deserves to be seen from all angles! Those curtains and runners show just how many amazing finds existing in a thrift store. Have a good week off.❤

This looks awesome!!! I love how it turned out. The moon sand is so cool and brought back a memory I'd completely forgotten of those old ornaments.
If you ever revisit this style of dress for something else, you may want to try adding padding. The silhouette seems to be what you're most unhappy with and if I've learned anything from Bernadette's videos padding can fix anything. Hip padding and chest padding would add the shape you're looking for and you could even make removable or reusable ones so you don't have to make new padding for each project. Anyway good luck and happy holidays! Also happy birthday to Nick!

Textured spray paint (they sell that) or the baking soda/chalk paint hack would have also achieved the cookie texture. Also in case you want to use an icing bag again, the nozzle itself goes inside the bag and there's typically a ring you screw on the outside to keep it in place. It turned out pretty cute all the same

It looks so cutee!! 😍 one suggestion to fix the back problem so you could wear it out... Would be to maybe turn the skirt around and add an apron! I've seen it in so many historical garments as a way to save the 'nice fabric' and I feel like it would be a really cute way of fixing a practical problem. Just an idea though, I still think it looks fabulous 😁
