Making THE "Ever After" Dress (aka the most frickin' complicated dress i've ever made lol)

  • Once in a while, there comes a dress that just straight-up GRABS you in a chokehold and doesn't let go until you attempt to make it. And so here we are: my attempt at making the "Breathe" dress from the movie "Ever After".
While this cosplay was SUPER intimidating and I didn't think I had the skills necessary, I decided to Futz Around and Find Out. There's no other way to see if you actually ARE capable of making something without fiving it a ding-dang shot so HERE YA GO.
This was by FAR the most detailed and intricate thing I've ever made and I am so excited to finally show you after working on it for about a month hehehe.
I hope you enjoy the chaotic process with plenty of triumphs as well as failures and thinking on my feet, lmao.
    I LOVE YOU ALL!

Exactly!! honestly I realized how low key genius Rachel was when she made the black and white striped dress Katrina wears in the last scene of the Tim Burton classic "Sleepy Hollow". I remember thinking, this will be difficult. After all, this is a period dress, with panels. etc, and the challenge lies in using this striped fabric properly - sewing it in such a way that the pattern ALWAYS points in the proper direction and lays correctly. Then I saw her *PAINT THE STRIPES ON THE FABRIC.* it blew my little mind. I realized that if you're making a project casually, i.e., not being paid to create something exact for film or theatre, it doesn't really matter how you manage to achieve a certain look. As long as everything stays together and ON the garment, and its cohesive enough to be taken off and put on comfortably, and looks like you want it to, evokes what you want it to, you have succeeded. She did it again in this video. Don't have the time/know how to embroider a shit ton of pearls/beads/crystals? Use applique.....and silver puff paint!!!! You would never know the difference! Just awesome. I love that she makes me feel like I could make some of the stuff she makes. It doesn't appear to be so distantly difficult so that I don't even want to try. I love Rachel for that.💗

If anyone feels bad about using hot glue to make costumes should know that Jareth's sparkly blue coat in Labyrinth was constructed using hot glue (I have the description from the museum card as proof) and if it's good enough for Jim Henson and David Bowie, it's good enough for cosplay.

@@faynaglam The sigh of relief I breathed in MOPOP when I saw that on the description card made my husband laugh. Even he was like, "Listen, this is a professionally made costume and they used hot glue. Use the damn hot glue if it'll make it easier for you." I'm pretty sure it was to get all the sparkly bits tacked on, but even so, it worked! You couldn't tell it'd been hot glued by looking at it and I was pressed up again the glass trying to soak in every detail.

Ever After is SUCH an iconic movie and honestly one of the BEST Cinderella remakes ever. The heroine is actually interesting, outspoken, intelligent, and for once, has a believable reason for remaining in the shitty situation she's in (not only is the estate technically hers, but she has to worry about feeding and taking care of the servants who are like her family). I adore, ADORE this movie. Danielle is a smart/capable heroine character in a way that Hollywood often doesn't get right (not just because 'strong female character goes here to pander to the audience,' but because it suits her personality and how she was raised). Actually, Drew Barrymore has said that Danielle's spunk and determination affected what roles she wanted to play afterward. The creators paid great attention to the politics and dress of the period, the script is smart with some fantastic scenes and lines, and even the side/antagonist characters have levels of depth to them. Most romance movies in general just don't hold up to Ever After in my book.

    • @chrstina
      @chrstina Год назад +7

I think the Drew Barrymore adaptation is iconic, but I also think there's also something to be said about the strength of the original Cinderella. Cinderella was created in a time when women didn't have the same rights we do today, stuck in an abusive household, mourning the loss of her father. All she wanted to do was go to the ball like her stepsisters and have a night away from it all; she didn't go because she wanted to marry a prince. She rebelled in the ways she could as a servant and managed to bring herself out from under her step mother and sister's cruelty.

I am so happy and proud of that gown- I couldn't tell you how much i spent on fabric and notions but the sense of Accomplishment wearing that gown makes me so happy. I had a mental health day last week where I wore the dadgum thing just for gits and shiggles. She's my first project- hopefully I'll get the guts and gumption to start another one- though not another Tudor gown- she's a beast I'm not ready to tackle on my own just yet LOL

I'm consistently amazed by Rachel's ability to look at something and say, "I will make this," and then use the skills that she has to get the job done in time. If I wanted to make this dress, I'd probably start with a chemise with lace trim at the neck and wide sleeves, a sleeveless kirtle with decorative overlayer, and separate sleeve gauntlets to lace on--Because that's more or less how a gown of this style would have been constructed historically and that's what I'm familiar with as someone who sews for historical reenactment. It would never occur to me to use hot glue, or paint my embellishments to match, or sew the sleeve poofs in place. But wow, it works! And maybe it doesn't teach me how to think outside the box, but it definitely makes the box I'm thinking in bigger. Gorgeous cosplay!

I'm so glad you did this. All of it, taking the time to challenge yourself and to let yourself do the hard work. Sometimes I feel like we as creators let ourselves take all the shortcuts all of the time because we don't believe in ourselves.
"I'm still a novice." My friend, you are not. Look at everything you've taught yourself to do. Look at all the ways you know to adjust a pattern to fit your vision. Look at the fact that you were not intimidated by making the under dress.
You earned this dress, Rachel. You can do the hard, complicated projects. You are capable. And? This dress is beautiful. You did such a good job.

Rachel, I’m 71 years old and I got my first sewing machine when I was 8 years old. I have sewed continuously for all these years and i still lay everything out on the floor to cut out and sew on the details. Do it how it works for you, and don’t let anyone else tell you you are wrong. There are some rules for sewing, but for the most part you just have to jump in and try just as you are doing now. Every time I watch a new video I see you getting better and better.

As a doll customizer, the whole process of having to keep ordering different fabric over weeks at a time until you get the right one is so relatable lol- I recently had to order three different types of lace, each with a 2-3 week shipping time just to get the perfect scale and color for an Ariel doll I'm working on and I couldn't work on any other parts of the dress until I had the right lace in-hand lol

re: "how are you supposed to do this"...my family has a giant whiteboard on top of two sawhorses in the living room. This majestic table is supposed to be assembled for large-scale crafting needs and then disassembled. Much to the dismay of my large-scale crafting needs, much of its surface is currently occupied by a 3D printer and associated guts. So...the answer turns out to be "with difficulty" lol

This is looking awesome! I have one suggestion regarding the WORST part of cutting out the pattern pieces from the tissue paper. In order to preserve them and make sure you don't lose any pieces if you ever want to reuse the pattern, I would suggest tracing the patterns using a pounce wheel/wartenberg wheel onto butchers or grid pattern paper and leave it all intact in the original tissue paper. Then you have a replicated, sturdy version of the pattern cut out of butchers paper or grid pattern paper, and the original purchased pattern stays as the full sheets and you won't lose anything if you ever have to retrace that pattern, or a different version from that pattern bag.

It makes me so happy to see this movie get love! It's probably my favorite romance movie, and the characters and costumes are just 🤌 _chef's_ _kiss._ Most of the costume designs can be traced back to actual historical evidence or period artwork, albeit they lean more towards Italian Renaissance vs. French. I have always wanted to make a version of the green outfit Danielle wears to save Maurice, or Jacqueline's horse costume from the ball (her mother may have been slighting her with it, but it's friggin' cute).
