    [Try4ce] There's a lot of confusion about the intent of this episode, so this is for some clarification. The N64 was actually my console of choice (by far) back in the late 90s, and I still really love it. I think there's an appeal to both the N64 look and the PS1 look. I think the N64 was really forward-thinking for implementing anti-aliasing, even if the technique is flawed by modern standards. We aren't by any means saying what's on display here is better. It's just a topic that's generated some interest, and we needed to address it on the channel. We don't mean to imply it as an improvement or a detriment, just present it for what it is. Personally, I have no plans to use the AA removal, but I do enjoy the de-blur. Some will even hate the de-blur. Yes, we understand (and say in the video!) that the N64's look is different on a CRT, but it's also not fair to say that this is the only way people should play the N64. Emulation also has plenty of advantages, but our focus in this episode is all about what can be done on actual N64 hardware. The goal of the RGB Master Class series is to show OPTIONS, not to declare the ONE best way to display your games. To each his own, that's not for us to judge or dictate.

      +My Life in Gaming Some people prefer picture clarity over the reduction of aliasing, and I can understand that. In fact, I believe some or perhaps many of the games on the console that were 2D still had the AA applied (or perhaps just the blur you also mention) resulting in (imo) an undesirable blur effect for fans of old school pixel art. So I think there may be people that would greatly appreciate such an option. Personally, I like the de-blur a lot and prefer my 2D pixels crisp and clear, 3D without AA or isn't my cup of tea. Nothing at all wrong with having options though. Thumbs up.

      i have a hdtv (with a horrible 36ms input lag) and i plan to get a gameshark, so this could help a bit. but i want to wait until a Ultra-HDMI Plug and Play version could come out to help the rest of it on my hdtv. unfortunately there is no solution to remove lag altogether yet. or at least on my tv.

    The blurring filter done by the N64 seems to be a basic form of anti-aliasing like FXAA. Instead of detecting triangle edges it looks like it just detects every sharp change in color so it goes overkill with the color blending. A perfect solution would add AA to the edges but leaving the textures as they are.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 лет назад +9

      +ccricers [Try4ce] I don't know a ton about AA techniques, but I don't think FXAA existed until something like 2011. I don't know how similar in style earlier methods may be. At the time it was pretty awesome because it did a decent job with hardly any performance hit. But now I'm playing through Uncharted 4, and whatever magic it's using puts any other AA I've ever seen to shame. Pretty dang close to no visible aliasing at all. Crazy to think we might be close to perfecting AA. Come a long way since N64.

    I just used an AA N64 patcher to turn the aliasing off on all roms for the Everdrive. The gameshark codes dont work with every game, and some codes only turn down the AA, not completely remove it. I found that latching the games with AA off was a better solution. This is a great video. I know its 4 years old, but it's good stuff to come back to visit.

I didn't think that the ULTRAHDMI DeBlur looked all that appealing to me (VS the original look of the games) - but the combination of what the GS does and what the UHDMI looks really cool! I'm looking at RGB modding my N64 at some point this year....I might hold off on it to see if it would be possible to get an RGB mod with blur removal comparable to UHDMI.
    This video made my day. I love how enthusiastic, optimistic and adventurous the writing is - and the footage of people plugging in/turning on/grabbing stuff makes me feel all happy inside.

    • @ravengaming4143
      @ravengaming4143 6 лет назад +2

      What's the point? N64's main graphical advantage over the PS1 were effects like mip mapping, linear filtering, texture perspective correction and anti-alliasing. Remove these things and you get a PS1 that uses cartridges instead of CDs.
      Also, the PS1 looks horrible on a modern LCD screen, those dithering artifacts you speak of were hidden on CRTs via composite video. You weren't supposed to see it.

    • @AmstradExin
      @AmstradExin 6 лет назад +3

      Anything can do Mip-Mapping, but the N64 doesn't do texture filtering, real anti-aliasing, transparency, fog, guraud shading etc...It's all fakery behind a courtain of smear. However, some PS1 Games will have some of these effects added when played on a PS2. I wish they just the chip of the Voodoo 1 at the time. That thing was actually an improvement.

    • @ravengaming4143
      @ravengaming4143 6 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure about mip-mapping in PS1 games, care to give any examples?
      N64 does so-called "tri-point filtering" which is a bit different to the (bi/tri)linear filtering found in PC games and newer consoles like the Sega Dreamcast and PS2 but looks pretty close to it and certainly better than PS1's nearest filtering without perspective correction which gives it that recognizable pixelated and warping look. The anti-aliasing is edge-based, so similar to 3dfx Voodoo's, not the full-scene AA which I think was first introduced by Nvidia's GeForce (I could be wrong though) whereas fog, transparency and gouraud shading certainly were hardware features of the N64 (same with PS1 - the Sega Saturn had problems with transparencies mind). N64 also did reflection/environment mapping well, as seen in games like Super Mario 64 (metal Mario), Wave Race 64 (water effects), etc. PS1 and the Saturn could do similar effects (e.g. Sonic R, Crash Bandicoot 3, etc) but they used them much less often and infact the water in Wave Race 64, a launch N64 title, was already on another level than water simulation in the majority of PS1 and Saturn games.
      There was no way for PS1 to have a 3dfx Voodoo in it, unless they'd release a updated model with more RAM, faster CPU and a new GPU which I assume would cost more for them to make and sell. Only realistic upgrade the PS1 could have had would have been more RAM (either system or video) but even that was, according to Kutaragi, too expensive for mass manufacture at the time. On the other hand, the Sega Dreamcast almost had a 3dfx Voodoo 2 based GPU in it before they changed to PowerVR instead.

    • @overwatch761
      @overwatch761 4 года назад +5

      I don't really see the purpose in spreading misinformation and console hate. The N64 did all of those things, many of which was the first time for implementation, it was significantly more powerful than the PS1 and Saturn, the N64 has none of the polygonal breakup, and shaking and warping however as has been known - its development environment wasn't anywhere near optimised. The AA is real, however there are many implements, the VI adds softness. In the 90s When you had a CRT, with S video it combined excellently producing an image that was sharp, clean and solid.
      The N64 actually looks excellent on modern sets with an ultra HDMI set to output at 1200p, hybrid scanlines and VI filter off and AA on which is my personal preference.

      To be honest, none of these options are nice. Sure removing Anti-Aliasing has benefits to some and blur to others; but to be completely truthful 3D polygons look nasty with 240p with video filters or not. 240p is awesome with handling 2D sprites but is a horrible resolution for 3D graphics. 480i is a much better resolution for these consoles but it's sad that very few games that generation could handle 480i.
      In truth, this console generation graphically has aged the poorest concerning resolution mostly (Since the previous ones used mostly 2D sprites with 240p, and the 6th Gen was mostly 480i/p or higher with 3D Graphics). I personally perfer to use sharper pixels for *any* kind of 240p video as a console gamer just to get the most amount of ""detail"" out of the picture. But in all truth, for this generation of consoles as a console gamer; I don't see emulation as a bad alternative for 3D based games. If I were to get into the N64 I would probably use emulation and skip the whole mess.

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 7 лет назад

      +Helloz World Yeah, being the first generation of 3D hardware made for a bit of a rough transition to be sure. It's funny, as far as resolution you can see the generational equivalency.. Back then 240 was average, and 480 the high res option. Today that has gone up to 720p being average with 1080p being high or "full HD".. And tomorrow, (actually today for more and more folks) 2160p or 4K is the new full high res standard, wonder what they'll settle on for a lower stopgap average, maybe 1440p, 1800.
      Starting to reach the diminishing returns though.. As many can't even really tell the difference between 1080p and 4K with an average size display at average viewing distance. So It should be plenty for years to come.

    • @Sebastian-xy3xk
      @Sebastian-xy3xk 7 лет назад

      +bliglum I've kind of stopped going on with how everyone wants everything in an HD resolution or higher. Eventually everything we have now will be considered outdated, so I kind of consider 480i/p to be ""high resolution"" weirdly enough. Sure 4K resolutions are pretty, but there are other pretty things that exist too. ^-^

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 7 лет назад

      480p was a reasonably high resolution for the smaller screens back then. When the biggest screens *tube were only about 36", DVD quality 480p was plenty! And when 4K first dropped, many reputable tech reviewers pointed out that in most use cases, it's pointless. Unless you get a 90" display, or sit just a few feet from a 50", there would be no discernible difference from 1080p.. That's when the TV industry quickly introduced HDR, so as to have another reason to upgrade! Haha!

      +John Redcorn Excuse me but they don't promote the filtering removal as the way to go. If you actually listen to them, they leave it up for the viewer to decide what they prefer, and even admit it's controversial/debatable. And I'm sorry, but claiming the N64 was a "whole generation leap ahead of the PS1" is absurd fanboy talk. The graphics were only marginally better, and the cartridge format was both expensive and limiting. In fact, it directly lead to Squaresoft leaving Nintendo when the N64 came out, because they had already invested so much into having CD storage that they couldn't afford to downsize to cartridge media.

    There is actually a code you can enter in Top Gear Rally that disables the bilinear texture filtering. It's a pretty interesting effect, and people used to call it "playstation mode" back in the day. I don't know of any other games that have this feature, but I would think that it's theoretically possible.

People that bash you guys for whatever ignorant reason or another obviously don't video edit, and can't comprehend how much effort and time you two commit to each one of these, even on the shorter side like this one. Quick question, I bough the EverDrive X7 three months ago and it arrived last week. Now I'm trying to uncover all the capabilities my good old N64 has to offer and dug as deep as is possible in 2020 into the graphics on actual hardware topic. Many threads are gone, most links can still be gathered via the Web Archive website.
    What I cannot find for the life of me is an anti-aliasing, deblur and dithering off hack/code for Turok, part 1 (Dinosaur Hunter). I have tried applying Saturnu's awesome patch myself over different versions of the ROM and none worked. Has anyone had any success?

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the last step that Ultra HDMI's de-blur "undo" is some kind of horizontal bilinear scaling.
    Mupen64Plus-Next with ParaLLEl can also disable the bilinear scaling (and/or the antialiasing) and the result is similar.
    I really hope MLiG revisits emulation.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  3 года назад +1

      [Try4ce] I believe the blur has something to do with how the N64 always outputs a horizontal resolution of 640 regardless of the game resolution. Since the game resolution is almost always lower, the 640 output makes it smeary. This is why it's somewhat simple to correct it when it's half that resolution, 320, but not for other resolutions. It is simple to deduce how many samples are needed to clean it up.

      +jangelelcangry [Try4ce] Well, you know, the supposed "PlayStation Neo" kinda makes you think, doesn't it? An evolved version of an existing design. And too, the way that GameCube games work so flawlessly on the Wii, as well as how Wii backwards compatibility can be wrangled into running GameCube games... such evolutions of hardware can be made to do interesting things. But the challenge of recreating those old chips exactly to spec is the tough part. There's also the AVS Nintendo that's coming soon, which, by my understanding, is not an emulator, but not original chips either... it's different from the traditional clone systems... I need to do more research on it. Either way, it may be theoretically possible, but with the challenge + cost involved, it's anyone's guess as to whether such a thing would ever be created.

    I guess the games look better, but N64 is one of those systems that I think benefits most from S-Video and a CRT. I don't see the benefit of RGB too much. N64 is always going to be a troublesome or uglier kind of platform with the limitations of the time.
    It's one of the situations where I see the developers original intention to be worthwhile in experiencing it today. The blur filters were likely a means to overcome the huge amounts of aliasing inherent in low resolution 3D rendering at the time. Combined with the limitations of a CRT the result was blurry, but I think it works and is accurate to the nostalgia of those games.
    Seeing Genesis, SNES, or NES through RGB is more of an improvement to me because that's how arcade games looked at the time, and probably how the developers saw it when making the game too. It also fits with how I remember seeing screenshots in magazines.

    So... How is no AA an improvement exactly? AA is pretty much expected these days, and for good reason!
    Why would you deliberately make the graphics more pixelated?
    And compared to the playstation, the fundamental problem is the N64's tiny 4kb texture cache, which means most games, especially the early ones use very small textures, even compared to the PS1, so blurring or not, there simply isn't much detail there in the first place.
    But this really is very weird. given a PC from the early days of 3d hardware, who in their right mind would disable bilinear filtering (what the N64 does, which makes textures a little blurrier, compared to point sampling like the PS1, which on PC at least, looks consistently awful by comparison).
    Nor can I think of any reason why you'd turn off AA given the option unless your GPU is really struggling (or you are forced to choose between higher resolution or more AA).
    It's just a rather strange set of choices to make... But then again I always found the PS1 graphics to be terrible. Pixelated stuff often with glitchy texture mapping...
    Why that appeals to anyone given a choice, I wouldn't know...

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 лет назад +3

      +KuraIthys [Try4ce] It doesn't necessarily appeal to me, though the de-blur does (I consider that different from AA). I would think of the secondary blur as being a similar effect of 720p or 900p on a native 1080p display... it's softer, but not in a good way (not to imply I think it looks bad, but it's not as good). Whereas the primary blur, yes, it's there to help, and I do agree that it helps. However, I also think my perception of AA on lower resolutions is a lot different compared to HD resolutions. I find a certain nostalgic appeal to the PS1 look, and I don't think anti-aliasing is necessary at such low resolutions to make an attractive game. But sure, in HD games, it's absolutely always helpful. Should it be removed in N64 games? I personally don't think so, but plenty of people are really interested in using this, so do what you like, I guess!

    • @RylanEdlin
      @RylanEdlin 8 лет назад +1

      Even on my fairly modern computer, I tend to dislike AA for hardware reasons. If I turn on AA, I have to turn down resolution to get acceptable framerates, so everything just looks smeared rather than looking smooth. It's a similar issue with the N64; the resolution is really low, so AA takes an already low resolution image and makes it smudgy.

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 8 лет назад

      Rylan Edlin Mmh. I guess there are downsides.
      The performance cost is obvious, and I usually turn off AA for that reason. (losing 20 fps for slightly smoother graphics? Eh. No thanks.)
      Still, from this video alone, I don't really see the appeal. I guess I could experiment, I still have an N64 lying about...
      But turning off Texture filtering in particular didn't impress me, at least, in relation to what was shown in the video.

    I always blamed the low res texture (4k texture cache) combined with the bilinear filtering that gave N64 games this blurry look. I even enjoyed PS1 games more just because they lacked filtering and had bigger and crispier textures, no matter if they luck perspective correct texture mapping (so you get distorted textures close up). I didn't know though N64 also supported anti-aliasing. I believe that would be better for such low resolution since maybe it only happens on the edges, unless it happened on the whole frame buffer so it affected sharp textures.

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 8 лет назад +1

      +Optimus6128 From what I recall (I attempted to find information for N64 homebrew development amongst other things - turns out almost nobody does that)
      The N64 indeed only does bilinear texture filtering and edge AA. So it only smoothes the edges of polygons.
      The 4kb texture cache was such a pain that a lot of games contain large areas that have no texture mapping at all.
      However, ironically enough, the cartridges saved the day because they are fast enough to seamlessly stream texture data from.
      So you find late era N64 games (such as conker's bad fur day, and Star wars: Rogue squadron) would actually cram in much more texture detail by using a very high number of low resolution textures which are read directly from the cartridge ROM.
      After all, if you can stream them into the cache fast enough, 16 different 64x64 textures work out the same as a single 256 x 256 texture...
      I don't know the exact details of how games were doing that though, so I have no idea what kind of limits were involved...

      It's blurry because, the N64 has two steps when anti-aliasing. Both the Gameshark and Ultra HDMI remove the first and second step. When you remove half of the anti-aliasing you end up with either result, the picture will still be blurry or too pixelated either way until you use both IMO. Notice when the Ultra HDMI has the de blur, around the pixels there is sort of a fade; and with the Gameshark there isn't a fade but just some blur left. That is what the two steps are

    You know, the AA doesn't really seem to smooth out the 240p jaggies all that much. So I don't get the hate.. CRT's blur the image, along with adding scanlines to have the image looking flawless. So the AA + CRT Blur is kind of beating a dead horse. In my personal opinion, the two best ways to play an N64 are as follows
    1: RGB Modded N64 w/ Game Shark De-Blur on a CRT
    2: Ultra-HDMI N64 w/ Game Shark + De-Blur on an HDTV
    But that's just me.

    I think the simple no anti-aliasing looks like ass. The ultra HDMI looks good though. The combination of both is absolutely horrible. Man.. Console gamers like aliasing? What a weird backwords world you guys live in. :P

      +General Turd [Try4ce] I've heard from several PC gamers who don't even like anti-aliasing, which strikes me as odd, but at least it saves performance. For the record, I definitely think AA is a good thing. I just played through Uncharted 4 and it has the best anti-aliasing I've ever seen... incredibly sharp and 99.9% jaggy-free. The implementation on N64 is pretty archaic, but I'm not picky about it myself. We aren't necessarily saying "do this," but it's something that a lot of people had interest in.

      +General Turd Personally, I think it depends on the game. I think it looks fantastic on Smash 64 (no anti-aliasing). The issue I have with the N64s method of smoothing/blur is that it reminds me of FXAA. As a PC gamer, I'm sort of picky when it comes to AA. FXAA is by far the worst kind of AA, it just makes everything look like a blurry mess (like the n64).

    • @thetinpin
      @thetinpin 8 лет назад +5

      +Jay W I think the hokey (to put it lightly) AA that the N64 uses kinda serves its purpose with _some_ titles. Others, well... it tends to look like somebody sneezed on the display and tried to wipe it off with their sweaty hands.
      That said, I would have to agree with you regarding the comparison to FXAA on modern GPUs. BUT I'd have to come clean and say that the -mucous- texture filtering and (what would nowadays be considered half-assed) AA were the big reasons I tended to prefer the N64's graphical capabilities over the Playstation in the 90's.
      The strange/broken looking polygon perspective issues the PSX had I felt were highly objectionable.

      Well, AFAIK it's always better to just render the thing at a higher resolution instead of using anti-aliasing... and I think the removal of such post-processing (is that what AA is?) on the N64 is done for the sake of clarity more than anything. I think it'd be better to play N64 games on a PC with the game rendered at 1080p (or4k, or w/e you want) with a widescreen hack or something but some people like to use the real hardware and I respect that.
      That being said, though (and I'd like to have a purist's point of view on this, if there's one reading), I don't understand the reason for removing it... or using things like the everdrive or retron... isn't playing the games as they were back in the day the whole point of using the actual hardware? In my eyes, if you're using a flash-cart and LCD/LED display with an HDMI modded console and/or codes to change the output (or worse, a flash-cart on a retron and modern panel), you might as well be emulating it on a PC since it's objectively better and more convenient in almost every way and situation.

      just download emulator for christ sake and play at 60hz at full speed instead that old pal 50hz version with black bars. Just use HDMI from your computer to your tv and use high graphic settings and it will be like full HD experience. Go for it

    • @RedArremer

      +Elkdog N64 emulation is still shoddy. I myself used to be an emulator fanboy, but always found something wasn't quite right with each system, like the occasional frame stutter or sound crackle, and that's with the more 'perfect' emulators. N64 emulation on the other hand doesn't even come close to merely being a case of the occasional hiccup. So for me, nothing beats being able to hook up an original system with an RGB cable, pop an Everdrive cart into it, and be able to play the entire library with actual hardware behavior instead of unreliable emulation.

    • @Elkdog
      @Elkdog 8 лет назад

      I had some of the sound issues too. I guess my real issue was with trying to get a controller to work well with the emulator. I bought a retro n64 pc controller that looked the same, but I found the analog was too sensitive or something. I pretty much gave up. I'm not really willing to shell out the money for an n64 and the games though. I really only liked mario64, ocarina of time and GoldenEye. I liked a few others but I thought they had some pretty terrible games on the system. I never bought another Nintendo again after the n64.

    • @ravengaming4143

      Many N64 games run horrible though, emulation is far better for playing the games at stable framerates and they also look far sharper.

      +Ron Baer anything not HD running on an HDTV looks awful. "looks great" doesn't mean farcry 3, just that the colors and image quality are great.
      Most of my experience with 8,16, 64, and 128 bit systems is on a 27" CRT, they all look waaaay better there than on an HDTV.

    • @Sebastian-xy3xk
      @Sebastian-xy3xk 8 лет назад

      James Cree To be honest, I don't think the developers even cared what their work looked like. Some of them used CRTs and others BVMs, if you actually want what the artist wanted their work to look like then you should use an emulator so you don't get 240p giving you less detail. And anyways, wasn't the hardware built to show blocky pixels? I think that theory of CRTs softening the image to look better is a bit too much and to far to think every developer thought that way. To be honest, it sounds kind of too fake to be real.

      [Coury] The closest that I can guess is because people seemed to think we were saying that we thought they should do it on their games. But we never actually say anything like that. We were merely presenting that the hack exists, what it does and how it compares to other options out there.
      In our entire RGB series, we never try to tell anyone what we think they should do, we just want to present all of the options and let each person choose what what they like best and how they want to play.

      not because you are ordering anyone to do what you say, but because you keep thrash talking about the n64 rounded looks, and claming that pixelated crap looks better (only agree on certain 2d games). stop talking like you had gods word, and nobody will get angry, seriously, stop talking like you had facts instead of opinions, this is a matter of taste
