I had a PU hawk and really struggled with it. The plaster kept wanting to slide off it. I then picked up a Wickes plastic hawk that has an embossed square pattern on the surface. I found it so much easier to use. I'm sure my crap technique has a lot to do with it but as a learner the Wickes hawk gave me a lot more confidence (and less plaster on my boots). I also found the same issue with a nice shiny new stainless trowel. The old steel one that I dug out of the shed and sanded the rust off held on to the plaster better when applying it.
Hello I’m just wondering if you would like to tell all the oldies who only use Marshalltown what are the best tools to change to as an oldie myself I had a heart attack at 61 I spoke to another plasterer and he says the new tools make it much easier oldie so I started off with a 600 speed skim and now I’ve got a nine hundred and 12 hundred as well as sponge floats plastic trowels Refina super flex And so on and so on and it’s made my life a lot easier but i wish I’d known from the start what to buy has I made a few incorrect purchases so wasted money things like the right size trowels and the right trowels to buy the right size speed skim and so on and so on it has made a difference to an old plasterer like myself and it might do to other oldies who are not sure on what to buy. So they don’t bother with it.
What size float do you recommend for a beginner? I have an 11 inch plastering trowel but tempted to go 14 inch on finishing trowel to save me buying twice but unsure.
Love your videos. The OX Plasterers Trowel I assume it's the P011014 Pro Stainless Steel Plastering Trowel, but I cant find a review anywhere on RUclips about it, except an advertising short vid from OX . How about a video review of your second choice trowel the OX P011014 Pro Stainless Steel Plastering Trowel would be nice. I have a tight budget to buy my tools, van, insurances, etc, etc; so a video review on the OX P011014 Pro Stainless Steel Plastering Trowel would be nice. As for the training the Job centre have booked me onto a course. Thanks for your tutorials.
Love your videos thanks for uploads can I ask the following, looking to replaster a small area in a old property. I'm looking to add lime to the mix. Could you recommend the best mix to use ?? Thanks in anticipation
Great video very informative as always.. Would you not recommend the ox flexi trowel? For the price I think it would be a great one for someone just starting out.. I get great results with it.
I've got one kitchen ceiling to do. I bought a 'Forge Steel' 13" from Screwfix. Based on your other vids, I put it on my band sander and rounded the corners and bevelled the edges, then used high quality papers to polish the whole thing dead smooth. Interested to see if it gets the job flat enough!
@@PlasteringForBeginners It actually went really well. I was able to create smooth passes with no drag marks. Would you like me to post it to you, so you can see if I actually made a difference to a cheap trowel or not? I'd be interested in a professional opinion! And, it might make a topic for a new video for you?
wickes do a brickies trowel pack with bucket trowel and big and small cement trowel and i picked up a ragni feather edge finishing trowel. did a small patch repair, no drama's. had to sand the edges in and a few bumps and marks and a bit of filler here and there but with the paint on was passable. got a bigger repair to do next week so going for a speed skiim to help me out.
Iv got an aldi mixer that's lasted 8 years it's been epic for 40 quid haha got it when I was coming out my time also I'm using the ox ultraflex and I love mine especially my midget version. I do have the marshalltown flex but I hate it takes soo long to break in so I'm rendering with it to break in.
@@drewwalsh5008 Hey mate the course is pretty good just gives you the feel of the trowel, I’d recommend doing some sort of 2 week course that isn’t rushed so you can get plenty practice in. You can go on My Builder which doesn’t require qualifications and start picking up small jobs on your own, you should even try and be a labourer for somebody to see what it’s like in real life situations but if not possible maybe just contact an experienced plasterer and pop in to watch how jobs work etc as each job is completely different and sometimes requires more materials than you expected. Hope this helps mate and good luck!
Thank you very much . I have been many Vedios of you to learn this. I fixed a plasterboard on the wall of rented house and practicing it. If you can tell me how to start and what is the best Darby( if I am not mistaken the instrument that use to flatten the rendering) to use. Thanks
When you look at it you dont have to spend that much to get started as a plasterer which is great. I do a lot of woodworking and can spend at least £250 on a mitre saw ive picked the wrong trade to get into ha
Marshallltown, A poor man can on buy things once so make the investment and move forward , do not buy cheap then re-buy later it's a false economy. Watched all your episodes and got the Nela and 1200mm Ox speedskim ... never looking back apart from coating beads first.

I have Ox ST x 3 Ox Buckets, Ox Bucket Trowel & Ox Flexi's, plus MT Permaflex, just had to buy another mixer, due to old dying, lovin it..
I'm looking at the 14" marshalltown trowel on AMAZON but it says finishing trowel. Do I need a different one for applying?
Hi did you find out which to buy!

Thanks matey! Definately - it's a very nice trowel and very reasonably priced. It's worth the investment pal 👍
Hi, I am a beginner. What's the difference between Marshalltown permashape and duraflex and pre worn, which of the three do you recommend?
I need to trowel over a long line on ceiling. It's a roughly taped concave surface. Any tips? Should I use a curved trowel that's not so stiff?
Hi Blaine, how do you store your trowels please?
The gift handed by god is the surgeon that replaces your knees hips and shoulder joints after a life of plastering 😂
Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks for watching pal!
