    You are right Blaine i rember an old plaster told once you have a trowel broken in. Once it broken in start with another one brake it in then you have 2 good trowels and then brake in another 2 incase it gets broken or nicked from you then you have a spare waiting for you Blaine

    • @PlasteringForBeginners
      @PlasteringForBeginners  Год назад +1

      This was the way before any Flexi finishing trowels! I need to start breaking another in really because of this very reason…I’ll get another one for Rendering. Great hearing from you and your dads methods. Cheers, hope you’re well my friend 👍

    Agreed Blaine. I am only a DIYer but I started by putting an off cut of plasterboard (1.2m x 1.5m) up in the garage and skimmed it over and over. It really gave me a feel for the technique I needed to use and helped build confidence. I wasn't afraid to ruin it because it was getting torn down and put in the bin at the end.

    • @PlasteringForBeginners
      @PlasteringForBeginners  Год назад +3

      That’s the one mate - fair play. It makes a massive difference to it confidence!

    • @Wgnwtb
      @Wgnwtb Год назад +1

      Was thinking of doing this myself, when you skimmed over it each time, did you just pva it?

    • @mikelskas
      @mikelskas Год назад +1

      @@Wgnwtb I did. Just a light coat the day before. I’m still learning. I did a pva layer of grit too at one point to see how it felt to skim on that.

    • @Wgnwtb
      @Wgnwtb Год назад +1

      @@mikelskas thanks for the quick reply, so no need to sand it etc to provide a key, just primer and good to go

    • @mikelskas
      @mikelskas Год назад +1

      @@Wgnwtb just get stuck in mate. If it goes wrong you can rip it off and start again. I had to rip a couple of layers off as I was practicing using the speed skim but made a mess with it.

    Ive been watching your videos some time getting to understanding the processes. I then got all the tools i needed and I’ve had a go. It’s took me a few weeks but today I’ve finished my stairs / landing / and hallway , lots of big high areas maybe starting up on a ladder was not the best move 😂. I was told by a building inspector today - you have had a good plaster there pal . I laughed and said it’s my first attempt. He was shocked / said that’s better than most of the plasters we have working for us. Shame you cant upload photos so I can show you my results . I lot has been learnt in the past few weeks in at the deep end but thanks for the help . Mission completed 🎉

    Thanks again Blaine, I have used your channels before and i have learnt a lot. But this info about the 3 rules of plastering has been inspiring, I wished I knew about these rules two years ago. (hahaha)... As i almost bought every trowel on the market to help me out which became a nightmare and then panic came to traumatise me. 🤣
    Like you said "just do it". Thank you once again for simplifying plastering.🤘

    Loving your videos Blaine! Signed up for your Plastering for Beginners course and it's so full of helpful tips and timings! We are finding we get some tiger stripes though after the two coats are on and we're closing in/1st trowel - any tips for what we might be doing wrong or how to figure out when to move on to the next stage better?? Thanks!

    Thanks for another great video. Just had my upstairs plastered, was temped to try myself thanks to your videos but knowing it wasn’t just a skim coat I thought I’d leave it to the pros.
    I have a question, part of my wall had a hard wall undercoat before skimming. It’s where the radiator used to be/will be rehung. How long would you advise before I can rehang the radiator? Was done 6 days ago and house temp has been about 5 degrees five or take.
    Thanks for the videos!

    Hello Blaine, love the videos and you’ve inspired me to give plastering a try rather than “calling the guy”
    A silly question, but how do you dispose of any leftover or unused bonding or multi finish plaster? Surely down the sink is a no no? Tip into bag then wait to solidify then dispose in wheelie bin?

    Honestly love your videos mate its very hard to find someone who will explain things as well as you do, quick question the boards you have used to practice on are you replacing them each time or do you prep then and go over them again? Iv got a little outter shed thats extended from the house and its just bare brick on the inside would i be better to dot an dab a board onto it or fix some timber so i can easily remove and replace a practice board? Also did you teach yourself to plaster or did you do any courses when you first started, hope to hear back from you, keep up the amazing content mate 👍🏻

    The best tip I’ve seen in comments is lighting. Get a really good day light lamp. Around 4000 lumens. Run the light down the wall or ceiling and use the glare coming off the work in progress. The more lamps or lumens the better. No one talks about lighting and even set the lamps up how natural day light enters the room. You’ll get to see what each trowel does and what it does not do.
    Lumens is where it’s at. Loads of em.

    What I don't get with the ox trowel is the 1 your using in your video,( I have 1) but the handle is horrific, but the ox ultraflex i have the handle is a thousand times better, would probably use more if handle was same as the ultra.

    • @PlasteringForBeginners
      @PlasteringForBeginners  Год назад

      The handle is a bit chunky and good point…the ultraflex is a totally different handle. Admittedly, that one’s better.

    Why would you use any other color than white? Isn't it more work for the painter, many of them paint white before the desired color so don't need to paint over anything dark. Excellent channel man
