Chicago’s raucous festival for Democrats this week serves many purposes: to channel enthusiasm for Vice President Kamala Harris, now at the top of the ticket and hoping to capitalize on momentum; to honor and thank President Joe Biden for passing the torch; and, of course, to attack former President Donald Trump while offering Americans a contrast to his potential second presidency.
Among the many side events and panel discussions programmed this week, a prominent through-line for speeches and appeals by elected officials has been the specter of Project 2025, the conservative manifesto and blueprint for a new Trump administration, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation.
In the hallways of DNC spaces, delegates carried signs declaring “Fuck Project 2025,” and speakers throughout each night of the televised portions featured speeches deriding the plan as draconian and radical.
As Mother Jones’s Pema Levy recently wrote, the right-wing dream project “outlines a radical restructuring of the federal government that combines the authoritarian goals of the MAGA movement with the deregulatory dreams of America’s plutocrats.” Under this document, Government agencies would be used to end abortion access, prosecute Trump’s enemies, unwind EPA regulations, and shutter the Department of Education. Mother Jones’ Julia Métraux recently reported Project 2025 would dramatically roll back workplace discrimination protections. Getting a whiff of just how unpopular this roadmap for his presidency is, Trump has continually tried to distance himself from it. “I have no idea who is behind it,” he posted on social media.
Democrats won’t let it go that easily. Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow even brought a giant Project 2025 prop to the DNC stage on Monday night, warning of an unprecedented “expansion of presidential powers” if Trump wins the White House.
Mother Jones caught up with several delegates and officials to explore the Democrats’ strategy for foregrounding the Heritage Foundation document as a threat to democracy. She asked how they plan to discuss it with voters in the weeks leading up to the November election.
“Project 2025 is about turning the clock back,” Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) told us-but she warned it’s not new. “It’s just now being exposed. And so people need to know it’s real and want to do this. And so we’re not gonna let that happen.”
“This is part of the Trump-era MAGA extremist Republican Party’s agenda, and then here he denies it,” Lee added. “I mean, it’s like, come on, please. Pathological liar.”
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) emphasized that Trump can run, but he can’t hide from Project 2025-and Democrats like Khanna are keen to keep pressing the point. “His whole transition team and all the people he’s going to staff government with are basically devotees of Project 2025,” he told Mother Jones. “But voters know that that is the agenda his appointees would implement.”

The Heritage Foundation wrote and began to publish the Mandate for Leadership books in 1981. The foundation's leadership and those books heavily informed policy during the Regan administration and beyond. Project 2025 is an extreme continuation of the Mandate.

Those books in 1981 were written with the polling data and beliefs of the American public in mind so it largely worked because policies and ideas themselves were popular at the time. Project 2025, however, doesn’t take polling data into account at all and that makes entire effort a horrible idea since America isn’t the same country it was 4.5 decades ago.
I was just reading that today in the book Backlash by Susan Faludi (published in 1991), and the Mandate for Leadership that year was written for the Reagan Administration. It had a lot of the same talking points about abortion and contraceptives that it has today. This has been a long-term plan for them. We’re going to have to vote blue for every single office on our ballots, don’t skip a single one because the Republicans want to take over every single elected office in the country (they have literally said that), so we have to nip that in the bud! All over the country, and in every office. We need to make them understand that we’re onto them, and we’re going to do everything in our power to stomp all their plans so completely that they can’t ever recover.

I only learned about it recently, but since I already own both items, why not? Funny thing is, my "Chucks" are knee-high, black, and vintage... at least 30 years old. One particular issue of Project 2025 is reclassifying civil servant positions to schedule F, which makes certain federal employees beholden to at-will firing by the executive administration. This is something Trump previously did while president and will implement again if re-elected. As someone interested in working in the federal beaurocracy to an extent, I find it fucking horrid that this even happened in the past, and may happen again come November. It's a blatent dismantling of the institutions of the government in the interest of the executive branch and, by proxy, the admin's benefactors.
Absolutely. In place at the moment are people who enforce the law and protect the citizens from being harmed, and sometimes protect companies from being robbed. They enforce the law, the new one will just enforce the will of the RULERS!
@@gretaholmes783 it's more about the changing of federal agencies from my understanding, so essentially making bureaucratic offices subject to partisan, at-will, firing. This harms the efficiency and ability of agencies to do their work properly. I don't think that this would necessarily change the partisan nature of policing in the country, as it is already a partisan institution. Although, it could be that the institution becomes more of an extension of the party and business, with less public accountability than the already lacking amount at present.

I urge people to read it. It is a long read but you MUST read EVERY page. They sneak in dangerous things within what appears to be boring departmental reorganizations. Example: In their broad plans to accelerate military technology reaching the battlefield and meeting recruitment goals they intend to:
A. Require every public school student to take the ASVAB (Military entrance exam), no exceptions.
B) Allow military recruiters full access to the school and it's students, including publicly funded colleges.
C) Neither of these things are demanded of private schools and religious schools are granted an exemption.
Why is there two little coverage on who the heritage foundation is.

Yeah I’m gonna echo what people are saying-for a lot of MAGA followers it’s more about ignorance and not caring because it won’t affect them. I doubt most MAGA people have read it. And while it is a concerning number, “half the country” is a bit of a misnomer, because not everyone votes, and some people are more misinformed than active MAGA freaks, though unfortunately as the movement grew more into a cult, most people are cultlike about it.
I guess I’m saying that it’s bad, but not quite as bad as social media + traditional media would have you believe, at least in terms of numbers. The amount of former Trump voters, independents and Republicans switching to the Harris ticket this election is a greater indicator that while it may not feel like it, it is clear that more than ever and I’m certain a majority of the country is against most or all of Trump’s and MAGA’s policies and their extremism.
I also don’t mean to be naive or overly optimistic. They don't. The vast majority of them don't even know what is in it. They vote Republican because they follow the "common wisdom" which for some stupid reason thinks that Republicans are better on the economy, immigration and/or crime. They are not, but this doesn't matter for low information voters.

While these issues are very important, I'm so glad that KH is turning a lot of attention to the cost of living issues that are driving today's voters the most. Rationally it's unfair that this probably drives most swing voters' votes, considering that most of the rest of the world has the same problem it can't really be the Democrats' fault, but nonetheless it's the will of the voter and it's an important set of issues which Biden, despite his greatness in so many areas, couldn't connect with.
