I have had my Galaxy Z Fold3 for seven months now and it has been an awesome experience. For me personally, it is going to be really difficult switching back to a traditional smartphone. Having a device that can be both a phone and a tablet is useful. Since I am visually impaired, having the extra screen real-estate makes this phone a lot more enjoyable.

Here's my thoughts as a fold 3 user. I manage a team of people and logistics. I take notes, make lists, look at spreadsheets, etc. The fold 3 is perfect for me and the "tool" I've been looking for. When it comes to leisure like playing games watching movies and things like that, I don't do to much of that just music and podcasts so I'm usually getting off work/coming home and putting my phone to charge with >50%. What I'm really getting at is if you use your phone as almost a binder for your work or personal life, like a resource more than an entertainment source, the fold 3 will defiantly come in hand often.

I've literally just bought the s22u and traded in my Zf3. I was such a difficult decision because the Zf3 is a great device with a gorgeous display but ultimately, concerns about the durability of the inner display, the camera and the battery made my mind up. Its also a little annoying having to open it to get to that gorgeous display rather than just lift it out your pocket. I think foldables will be mainstream very soon but I think we're maybe a few generations away. Excellent, spot-on review and I completely agree with your take on these two devices. At the end of the day, the Fold 3 wasn't for me. I enjoyed it while I had it and as a tech piece, it's amazing. I found myself using it 90% of the time in the closed mode and really missed the slab size (came from a Note 10+ which still is one of my favorite phones of all time). I don't game so the extra screen real estate wasn't a huge factor. I was also disappointed at times with the cameras and ultimately (ha, no pun intended) I went back to the slab and am rocking the S22 Ultra. I absolutely love it and honestly can't say that I miss the Fold. Still, either one of these devices would be an amazing choice - it comes down to day to day use needs.

Your comparative views certainly puts things into perspective. I consider myself as a late adopter, with the view of upgrading from my Samsung M31 (6000mAh battery beast!) to either the older Z Fold 3 or the latest and greatest S22 Ultra.
I recall years ago when I got the Note 1, I was laughed at by people saying I got a plate-size phone. Now, everyone I know sports a minimum 6inch phone. A larger screen is such a need nowadays for media consumption.
My 2 main criterias are Bigger Battery and Bigger Screen, and such I split across the 2 Flagships. Doesn't help that my local carrier has run out of the Phantom Silver Z Fold 3 and the Phantom White S22 Ultra. So now, I am using the waiting time to seek as much justifications and proof I can to support my decision making.
Videos such as yours here are a godsend as it discusses the merits and weaknesses of each device.

My 22 Ultra lasts all day partly because the battery is bigger but also because I have a 45w charger. I leave it charging for just a few minutes here and there throughout the day and routinely end my day with 60%+ battery. The s22 charges so damn fast even in my car. I love that I can leave my phone next to me all night and then go plug it in while I shower and make breakfast in the morning and its back to 100% in no time. @@rox-star Wrong brand? It's not just the camera it's the better battery life better chipset in display fingerprint scanner better face scanning better fast charging much less bulky in built S Pen with more functionality than the fold Pen more durability and better cameras (idk what's bad about better cameras Samsung makes the best cameras now imo). I really enjoyed the fold 3 when I had it but as cool as the folding mechanism is when I really thought about it I only had the phone for 2 reasons, 1 was the "cool factor" and 2 was a larger screen. Speaking in terms of pure functionality a bigger screen for me just wasn't worth sacrificing all the other things I listed, and the S22 Ultra still has a pretty big screen so unless you absolutely need a bigger screen in your pocket I don't see any real good reason to get the fold and that's after a good year of using them (had the fold 2 and fold 3). Just my experience and opinion.

Samsung has a mother's day special where they are giving 1k for the Z Fold 3 AND a free memory upgrade. I had been debating the switch on S22 launch but glad I held off as this is a better offer. I love my fold but im sick of the crease which has gotten deeper and more noticeable the longer ive had the phone. Dropped it once and it got 2 dead pixels. The selfie camera is actually atrocious and battery life isnt great. Also, finding a decent case for this phone is like looking for the lost city of Atlantis. No good way to store the S-Pen and most apps are still not optimized for this aspect ratio so everything looks weird. Front screen is practically unusable because of how slim it is and while I love how it feels in hand it's really hard to type especially with a case on. Writing this made me realize there's a lot more about the Fold I didnt like than I realized and I'm glad I pulled the trigger on the S22 Ultra.

I already had issues with the Fold 2 and Fold 3. Had to send them both to repair after approx 4-6 months of use. They are still not reliable. Better stick to traditional slab phones till few more generations of foldables come out. The great advantage of Fold 3 is the screen real estate that really enables notes BUT the S pen case and implementation makes the phone much bulkier. Lastly, the Fold 3 is nearly incapable for car mounts especially if you have an S Pen case on unless you can find a very specialised mount.

I'm in all the way when it comes to a phone/tablet. It's just worth it. I've had the fold 2 for over two years by the way. Never had any problems with durability. You just need to take care. The S22 Ultra is a great device, but where i'm at at the moment, Exynos is the only option which is a rip off. Rather wait & take the plunge with the Fold 4. Think I'll stick to the fold 3, I have small crack down the seam but I like the productivity of having a foldable in my pocket. I also like how it folds out large enough to read my Kindle comics on it so it doubles as a "kindle colour" for me. If the next generation has an internal storing s-pen, a better folding screen, front s-pen supporting screen (even after 10+ months I keep forgetting the pen doesn't work with the front screen grrrrr.....), and a updated processor/gpu then that would be enough for me to upgrade and I normally upgrade every 2 years.
Dumb question, how do you do that multi-screen setup shown in this video? This might be handy when logging into something along with my password store and 2FA sitting side by side.

First and foremost, thank you for your interesting comparison on these 2 Premium phones. . .
I personally don't think you can really compare the 2 devices up against each other as one being better than the other.
My reason is simple, it comes down to Form & Function.
I also don't necessarily agree with your slandering of the Fold 3 as it honestly made me think you were comparing the S22 to a galaxy S7...
Again in my opinion the Fold 3 is way ahead of the S22 Ultra in most aspects (unless you a professional photographer, but even then you would be using a DSLR or something similar anyway) and be it new Premium Phone with fresh marketing, what with a newer camera & chip and and and... found on the S22 Ultra
(most of which is alot of sales jargon anyway whenever any new flashy Premium Phone hits the market)
What annoys me most is when these tech giants launch any new phone the way they compare it to their previous model and actually try fool us into thinking WoW my phone feels old now...
Well they not fooling me and anyone who's on the same page as me on this will agree...
I bet if Samsung and Google never stopped support for our "older" arcaic devices that they would be more than sufficient for our everyday chenanigans, older chip and all...
At the end of the day nobody in their right mind is going to do whatever it is they do on their S22 Ultra and say "WoW this is so much faster then my old Fold 3" or be it even older devices that are still receiving security and software updates.
    Thank you for reading ...

I agree with you. The Galaxy Z Fold3 is in a league of its own and is more exciting than the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The fact that this device can be used as a phone and tablet is a major selling point. You make a good point when it comes to the cameras. The cameras on the Z Fold3 could be better, but are not dealbreakers since I use a mirrorless camera anyway. I would have considered the S22 Ultra if it had expandable memory. Since Samsung is doing away with the microSD card slot, it is time to move on from the S series.

Very well said. Z Fold 3 is a totally different league. If people want a slab phone, leave it there. PERIOD. Stop trying to put a skinny pen in this big phone. Technology is about improving and moving ahead. What is the point of making phones like this if you want to make it into what you already know. I went out on the limb and got the Z3. Love it. Yes outer display is small, but I didn't buy it to use 90%of the time for the outer display. Camera is worst in low light. But I have my old ultra 20 for occasions when I know I will take a lot pics. Other than that the camera is good for what the average person does. It would be so much more beneficial to have videos showing z fold 1 in 2022. Hinge/screen comparisons from then to now for consumers who may be interested in taking the leap into something different. Use these videos to do your research. These cell companies sponsor videos for a reason. Every 6 months, there is a new launch so now it's old device vs new device and why you should buy.

How can you even compare? The fold has an almost 2-times bigger screen, and in these sizes (as opposed to e.g. 50" vs. 100") - the size does matter, a hell of a lot. Who the hell cares about a little (!) shorter battery life or a tiny bit less-amazing display or camera when you get a mini-tablet that fits in your pocket in return for these compromises?
The only problem is the outrageous (and, to most people, unaffordable) price - but that goes for both these phones.

For me Z Fold 3 is a prototype of something which in the future will be the phone I will go for. For now I decided to buy S22 Ultra and I love it. But having a bigger screen would be a great thing. I would like to see built-in S-Pen (a bulky cover with S-Pen slot does NOT do the trick), slightly different screen ratio (briefly speaking, when folded I would like the Z Fold phone to have similar screen ratio to the slab phones and this would also nicely changed the screen proportions when unfolded - would make it more like for a tablet) and a better camera system (does not have to have UDC but a camera system that is comparable to S22 Ultra would be a nice thing). I am hoping that the Z Fold 5 will have all these improvements. Until then I'll stick with S22 Ultra....

I have an S21Ultra and I am eligible to upgrade to either device. I chose to not do it for the sake of the very difficult choices. While I want compactness which I'll get from the fold, I also just don't want to sacrifice performance which I'll get with the s22 Ultra. The camera specs aren't great for the fold 3, but the s22 ultra is big, bulky, and uncomfortable to hold sometimes. The fold is like 1500-1800 dollars which I feel just isn't ideal to purchase when the device is far from perfected and the s22 Ultra is hundreds cheaper. It's all about what you are looking for honestly. I decided to not go with either because they are both extremely great devices that will be relevant for years to come, but neither were enough for me to go for it. Amazing devices, but there's too many pros and cons and the two do not compromise.

    • @rox-star

Honestly dont think you sacrificing any performance with the Fold 3 whatsoever,
all these flagship phones are only capable of processing up to a limit and most of us have to enable power saving as well as configure many other battery saving settings which all slow the performance of the processor down anyway, just so we can get any kind of decent battery life anyways, so don't let all that sales tech jargon get to your head, there's only so much any chip can do pro-rata to its power source, that being the battery. The faster the chip the more battery consumption.
