Parkland Shooting Decision: Jury decides life or death for Nikolas Cruz

- Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz will be sentenced to life without parole for the 2018 murder of 17 people at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, after the jury said Thursday that it could not unanimously agree that he should be executed.
The jury’s recommendation came after seven hours of deliberations over two days, ending a three-month trial that included graphic videos, photos and testimony from the massacre and its aftermath, heart-wrenching testimony from victims’ family members and a tour of the still blood-spattered building.
Under Florida law, a death sentence requires a unanimous vote on at least one count. Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer will formally issue the life sentences Nov. 1.

People have been sentenced to death for much less. Ridiculous!
Parkland school shooting jury spares gunman death penalty
I agree
Keeping him alive is wasting taxpayers money
I guess 14 children and 3 adults killed in cold blood does not qualify for the Death Penalty.
I’m dumbfounded at how this judgment happened. I feel so horrible for these families.
Parkland school shooting jury spares gunman death penalty
the ruling shows that nicholas cruz’s life was worth more than all of his victims.
Society is doomed if we allow one person to determine the outcome over the majority. God have mercy on us.
No justice! Shameful verdict! My hearts goes with the parents who lost their beautiful beloved always remembered kids.
Most kids aren’t beautiful or nice.
It's ok because he will be living in hell. The other inmates will take care of him
@@betanova5189 and most are stupid
@@patriciascott4211 they better but I don’t even have faith in that. Someone needs to get to him that’s for sure - these parents deserve that Justice.
@TheTruthSpeaker you are the one that needs help
This case is a amazing example of why the American justice system sucks
Just shocking , my heart goes out across the pond to all the families and all involved x

Shocking not wanting to kill a person? It's shocking you want him to die. Find God.
Finding it hard to believe that jury did not give him the death penalty... If his actions did not deserve the death penalty, then what does!?... My heart breaks for the families that lost their loved ones by this murderer..
Parkland school shooting jury spares gunman death penalty
I know, I thought the death penalty was meant for the cruelest or horrific crimes. I'm soo disappointed in the system. Maybe this trial should have been in a different state.
It was not just the judge. The entire jury was unanimous on their verdict.
To certain extent, I understand they didn't want to see this young man killed. Who wants to see the death of anyone?
However, those mass shootings won't stop if the people keep showing compassion for the responsible of massacring innocents.
It must be zero tolerance to mass shooters.
They must know, that good luck and long life isn't part of the equation here. You decide to do so, you are putting a bullet on yourself as well.
@@alexjones9038
No, but it could keep possible future victims alive.
They should get a clear message that there's no way out of this.
Mfs be like "give him the death penalty"
The current forms of capital punishment are far to lenient for monsters like him
I can't hold back the tears. These poor family members deserve so much better than this. This proves to me that there are no morals left. We are on our own without a system that works anymore. We once did when our constitution could protect us. Now the constitution protects the criminals because everyone is entitled.
Is it the norm to hear all the jurors names being called out?
Too any jurors that were presiding over this case on the off chance you get to read this comment ….you failed horrendously today 17 lives gone and the one that took them gets to live you have failed justice and you have failed the victims I hope you can live with that
People on death row more often die of old age.. We should not be protecting these people period, disgusting. I would kill him for free but they protect him.
Taking another life won't bring those 17 lives back.
@@JohnDoe19840 but why does he deserve to live while they can’t?
@@cinnamon88 everyone deserves to live.
Isaac Richardson. No but it will give some closure , justice, and set an example for the next mass shooting that plans on killing children. There has to be severe consequences for his actions and life alive in a protected prison eating 3 plus meals a day, receiving education, playing video games, never having to work to pay bills, never having to worry about a roof over his head is not a severe consequence.
Condolences to each family, to the community as a whole.
I honestly feel so bad for all the mothers, sisters, brothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, all the family involved. No person deserves to lose a family member in this way

This jury did not do their job. I am so sorry for all of these families. Justice was NOT given out today!!!!!
The jury had compassion I guess because they heard testimony about his childhood. how he was born which I understand but he was an adult when he committed this murders so I think he should have got the death penalty...
Wow, really this was an open and shut case... Were Beavis and Butthead part of the jury?
Just one of them
Shameful verdict
Yo yo yo random internet person here, mind sharing the timestamp where she sentenced him? The video I watched, she goes to impose sentence and then it is stopped by the prosecution due to not all victim statements being made. She then recesses the court. At what point did she impose sentencing?
The first speaker is exactly right. This just proves that you can commit a crime like this and they’ll slap your hands and let you enjoy yourself in prison and this others will do it
I agree that he should have been given the DP, but life in prison without the possibility of parole is not a “slap on the hand.” His life is still going to be terrible and he could be killed by another inmate
@@mg-fx5dn well, if you know anything about the prison system, it’s not what everybody thinks it is. These guys can order TVs to have in their room as long as they got the money to buy the stuff they get to have it, they can pay somebody to make the bed and different things depending on if they consider him a threat, they’ll put him in solitary and he’ll have it made he won’t be threatened. He won’t have nothing he’ll get you know three meals a day. Get to watch TV get to work out get to go to school or do some kind of schooling type things read books relax email
@@mg-fx5dn prison is nothing once you get there, that is what most criminals say
I wouldn’t know and I guess I could be wrong, but life in prison sounds pretty terrible to me. Like I said, he definitely deserved the death penalty. I just don’t see life as a “slap on the hands/wrist”
There should not be a jury in these situations, let the victims' family decide they can vote for themselves. Disgrace, what message this sends is unbelievable.
I hope that true justice will come and there will be peace for the families.
One takeaway I can find from this sentencing is that you should NEVER rely on the “justice” system to administer any sort of justice at all.
So Charles Manson killed no one and received the death penalty (I know it was overturned) this animal killed 15 kids 2 teachers and then attempted to kill 17 more, does not get the death penalty? Did you know this animal pulled the trigger of that high powered weapon 139 times? Just try doing that with your own finger without a gun once!! ONE HUNDRED THIRTY NINE TIMES!! and only left because “there was no one left to kill” his own words included “no mercy” he “enjoys seeing the families suffer” what in Gods name is going on down in that state? Florida can’t seem to get anything right, from elections, Casey Anthony, and on and on, that jury or the one lone juror should be ashamed, and don’t forget the judge can over rule the jury’s decision, stay tuned
@E Boston oh well shit I’m sorry turn him loose then
My heart aches for these families. I too have lost a child not by murder but by unfortunate medical circumstances, there is relation to their heart aches. I agree though, this justice system is all screwed up
It's not only those families. Every mother; me included, we fear things like that could keep happening.
School security is so high, they look like prisons and we don't want it any other way because we want to protect our kids from monsters like that.
I think about that almost every day I sent my children to school.
We should not live in fear.
Sorry for your loss 💔 my condolences!!!
This is sick I’m disgusted. My coworker was born to a crackhead mother he is an extremely amazing person he does yoga he just had a daughter he goes to work everyday he is an incredibly productive member of society. That is NO excuse to be a murderer. I’m so sad for these families. I just looked at the death row list and MANY are on death row for 1 or 2 murders. HOW does this POS get to spend the rest of his life living in jail for free not having to work or do anything after killing 17 people. The actions alone before and after the murders of Nikolas Cruz are despicable. Even up to this very day how he reacted in court covering his ears to not hear his own crimes. So sad the injustice SMH.
Most of them children no less. Unbelievable.
Justice ⚖️???? , where did our backbones go? Why do the criminals get away with murder? The judge could have over ruled the outcome. Shame on her and the jury!!!!!!
The American justice system is awful. A man who killed 17 people still gets to live?! What more awful crime can deserve the death penalty? 17 lives and opportunities were murdered, and that's not a death penalty for the shooter? I'm done with this. My condolences go out to the families who not only lost their kids, but saw that justice was not served for the monster that took their lives away
Alyssas mom is right, STOP showing the shooters face, no more notoriety… I am saddened by the jury’s decision.
The shouldn't let just people off the street make a decision like that, but the families of the victims !!!!!
If there was ever a death penalty case this was it! Our system is so broken.
You can tell by multiple faces the judge was making, who tf was on this Jury.🤦🏽
Unbelievable… and now our taxes will go to maintain life of this disgusting man….
Prisoners don't take too kindly to people who harm or murder children. He may have a hard time in jail, deservedly so.
Most people have had a hard up bringing and didn't become killers, although alot of them have, this guy was rebellious from the get go he was dangerous!!!!!!! The system just sent out a horrible message to the whole nation of America!!!!!
And I hope those evil defense lawyers are not bragging how they won the case!!!!!!
evil don't die easy. bottom of my heart my condolences for victims' family lots of prays.
Like she keeps reading a book to teacher you about oxymoron.
Totally tragedy, but who knows, maybe life in prison is worse than death. We don’t see beyond, but we need to trust God. There is a reason why he did not get death sentence. God may want to work on this criminal turning him around. Who cares right? Life in prison will not be enough for me either If was one of these parents. Terrible society we live in.
In other countries this fool will be executed in public… USA will never have the power to control THE WORLD!!!!
I was pissed for a month when I heard about the monster being spared
at 1:39:34 you can see Cruz’s attorneys crying… i honestly wonder why. idk if it’s sad tears because they feel bad for the victims families, or if it’s happy tears because their client of 4 years doesn’t have to die for what he did. maybe both? would love to hear some of y’all’s thoughts on that.
Parkland school shooting jury spares gunman death penalty
Could it be because this is a very emotional case for them? The defense and the judge has had continuous tension with both going at each other during the penalty phase of the trial. The defense team was told off a few times by the judge which was publicly embarrassing and overall just a bad time when they're both trying to do their job. So maybe they're just glad it's over
When a dog is old and full of pain what do we do? We have the animal put to rest to put it out of its misery. In other words we are actually doing the dog a big favour….Why would we do a favour to this piece of shit. Let him spend his whole life in prison. That’s way more of a punishment than killing him….Make him suffer don’t help him by executing him…..
Time step of the sentencing?
They said they're re-sentencing on Nov.1st
This should have an IMDB page with one star!
Alyssa’s mom is so right
Either take down the threat or don’t do the job
Just imagine paying taxes so this killer can have 3 meals a day and a place to sleep. Take him out back and get it over with, why should he stay alive and get pics, letters, visits and phone calls while the parents will never hear from their kids again
That is nothing. The real tragedy is that he could be seen as a hero by some nuts.
Whatever reason he had to do so could be glorified.
It should be a way to send a message of never again.
Zero tolerance to mass shooters should be the message.
Disgusting. The Dr is right. This sets a precedent.
Not really. When crazy people go off they don't weight consequences. Most even kill themselves.
the court system is so slow and annoying
poor parents,
WHAT PRISONERS WANT COMMISSARY FOR LIFE???? TAKE A LIFE TO GET COMMISSARY FOR LIFE.
Sad just disgraceful
It’s funny how everyone wants to advocate for mental health until this happens. Life in prison is what happens when people suffering from mental defects commit heinous crimes. The death penalty would not have changed anything that happened. Now he gets to sit for 60+/- years and think about what he did.
why would he care about what he did?
I’m so sick of hearing this!!! Nikolas Cruz is NOT going to sit there and think about what he did. He’s not going to feel bad and he’s not going to sit there and rot. His life was bad before his crime. He just got an upgrade in his life.
Lol he wearing the dahmer glasses
Big hugs to the families. I can see why they are so mad he won’t have the death penalty. I like that he will spend at least 60 years in prison. He’s young. A life sentence will be horrible for him.
For you it would be…For you. His life was already terrible before the shooting. This jury just gave him an upgrade on life. Or like the families have said the jury gave him a gift.
He pleaded guilty before trail no need for death penalty, it saves a lot of taxpayers $$$
It saves taxpayers money by putting him in a prison funded by taxpayers and keeping him alive with food paid by taxpayers and having him guarded by security funded by taxpayers? Instead of just killing him as a small one time fee?
This should be about justice, not “taxpayer money”
Wonder how many were against the death penalty before they were for it? Asking for a friend.....
This verdict is absolutely unacceptable. If this guy doesn’t deserve the death penalty, then I don’t know who does. Despicable. Some bible thumpers don’t believe in the death penalty - whatever happened to “an eye for an eye” … you haven’t read the Old Testament. Doesn’t surprise me, most of you can’t even read. Some Christians you are. May these families find peace in their hearts and minds. I’m so sorry for your loss. For the victims, may you Rest In Peace 🕊 💕

As far as I know they didn't break any laws, unlike the murderer that gets 3 squares a day for the rest of his life.
He could have killed just as many with a large knife.

I'm glad anyways so that way he'll always know what he did every single day that he'll be alive that's more of a punishment to think about what happened
I agree with you that the justice system is failing people that have lost their family members in these shootings but the police are stuck having to follow protocol and have to do things by the book or they will be treated like they committed a crime just for doing their jobs because if they would of shot the kid and killed him the parents would of sued the department for killing their son And you and I both know that because no disrespect their are to many people out there just trying to get cops fired for doing their jobs but I believe it doesn't matter how old you are if you run your mouth and try fighting with a cop just to try and be cool well when they slam you to the ground even if your head hits the ground to bad if people want all these shootings and gang related crime's robbery's and drug related crime's to end then our military should be brought into every state and they should go house to house Town to town from the noth coast to The south coast east coast to the west coast and clean up The entire country and it doesn't matter if people think it an invasion of their privacy if you have nothing to hide or are not a felon that isn't allowed to own fire arms and think selling drugs is your job or making meth cocaine or other drugs even though pot is legal they should be searching every house too to bottom and if they destroy everything in every home searching and don't find anything to bad buy new stuff and if they find something and you have children well both parents should be locked up and tested for drugs and questioned why they found it and why it is in their house and that the parents are stupid to think they need drugs to get through life you have children that are way more important than drugs and if people are to stupid to see that then clearly there is something wrong with them and they need to spend a whole year in jail no matter what but felons that have things their not supposed to have should be sent back to prison for the rest of their sentences and have additional time and charges added after they served the Time they owe
Two words 'Merica,

Do not blame the police!!!!!!
That's wrong!!!
The pigs sat back and did nothing. AGAIN! Screw the useless Blue Gang!
I hope he escapes prison and hides out for 40 years and never gets caught.
society deciding punishment for cruz that killed peoples children, not right in my eyes, makes since though we are not god or the higher power that decides that, but the bible does say you will follow the laws of the land. so ultimately people decide his fate, is not right in my eyes... if my child was killed I would have gone a different route,
I'd have bet all my money on the death penalty. This outcome is a major step forward ! Out of medieval times forward into the third millenium. The USA still has the abillity to change for the better and to adjust to new times. Welcome to the new world, well done. This is justice, not simple revenge.
You actually need help. You don’t understand justice at all. You have no good reason for this sub human to live. You have no emotions to losing a loved one in such a horrific way. You should be checked.
If new times = mass shootings with zero consequences, I won’t none of it.
I am like inhumanly confused beyond comprehension. So right before she imposes sentencing, the woman explains that all the victims need to make impact statements. She schedules a date for it and recesses the court. AT WHAT POINT DURING THIS VIDEO DID SHE IMPOSE A SENTENCE OF LIFE? I am hyper confused I guess
Damn she cute!!!! Yea you know !!😏😏
I'm glad the death sentence was not imposed. This helps set a precedent against a old and barbaric practice. And I don't care what your points of view are, I'm not even going to read them, so don't even waste your time. Giving your government the authority to execute its own citizens is a bad idea. Sending the message that killing can be justified by killing is insane. And killing to satisfy your own grief is immoral. Killing is only appropriate in terms of self defense. An eye for an eye is a horrible message. Preserving life in the midst of so much loss of it is a far better message.
Finally! A sound and reasonable comment! My thoughts exactly ❤️
The juri has to be unbiased and cannot judge according to their beliefs but follow the law. A member of the juri that cannot be unbiased should have been excluded. This trial wasn’t about the law whether the death penalty should exist or not. It’s about the victims of these terrible shooting.
@@felipecarvalho499 I feel no simpathy for this monster, make no mistake. I just think that even a monster’s life is valuable. The FBI learned a lot in the 80’s from serial killers who weren’t sentenced to death. Apparently, a Sandy Hook mother finds solace in visiting this monster and understanding what drove her baby’s killer. He is valuable for a whole lot of reasons. Preventing future school shootings is just one of them….and I’m a mom. I know that I wouldn’t want the grief plus a human life on my conscience. But maybe it’s a cultural thing, I don’t know…..❤️
@@felipecarvalho499 but the law is ultimately about precedent. What I'm saying is that hopefully a new one was just set. And they did follow the law, the mitigating circumstances simply outweighed the aggrivating ones. Which is how it should be. Violence does not happen in a vacuum.
@@raquelcastrovalente5673 Thank you, its not about the monster Nicholas Cruz. I have no love for him either.
