I understand that you maybe forgot but Freddy’s whole purpose was to kill the kids of the elm street parents who killed him. They had been teenagers by time freddy was able to get his revenge. It was an obvious work around to not kill kids but it was explained. After he killed the last of them in 4, he used the remaining teenagers to use his name to spread fear so he could get stronger. It all made sense with how they explained it.

Jason's portrayal in this is a whole thing. They actually fired Kane Hodder who played Jason for almost 20 years, because they did think he was big enough physically to be Jason in this movie. Kane Hodder wasn't happy and there are still fans who are pissed about it. That aside, Ken Kirzinger did a fantastic job as Jason in this movie, funnily enough he's a stuntman and did a good percent of the stunts, but the studio DID NOT want him to do any stunts. He called being treated like an actor weird, he really wanted to the Jason on fire in the cornfield scene, but the studio wouldn't let him. He's not a stranger to the Friday the 13th franchise as he appeared in, "Jason Takes Manhattan" and even ironically fought Kane Hodder's Jason.

This movie came out at the perfect time for me. I had watched all the movies and was a big fan of both characters. I was obsessed with concepts of distinct opposing forces meeting, like in old Godzilla vs. movies so this was pretty much a dream come true. Then when I saw it, it delivered so heavily on the Versus part of the movie that I instantly fell in love with it, despite knowing it had many flaws. Freddy and Jason tear each other to pieces for the entire third acts with literal gallons of blood and it is glorious.
I think of it as a final sendoff to the slasher genre. The end of an era. A wave and a final wink goodbye. It had become outdated by then, and the Scream series had already been deconstructing it. So what better way to go out with a bang than have the two biggest icons finally face off with all the fixings and loving tributes from movies past. You get a little dodgy CGI but mostly its still good old fashioned practical blood and guts and the movie still keeps that classic fun tone where it's not taking itself too seriously. Not a bad swan song for the original continuity of both characters and a worthy final appearance by Robert Englund as Freddy.

This is self-aware schlock when executed well. It knew exactly what it was, and it “winked” at the audience (at the end, literally 😉). 😂
A big difference between Jason and Freddy is that Jason kills *clinically*. He’s doing what he believes his Mother is telling him and killing is just “a job”. He’ll lop your head off, and move on.
On the other hand, Freddy revels in being unnecessarily cruel, he enjoys his “job”. Like in the other movie where he was enjoying himself behind the deaf kid’s back, mocking him without anyone else aware of his antics but himself. Which is hilarious.

    • @Sweet_Venom0027
      @Sweet_Venom0027 Год назад +1

There have been occasions where Jason made his "job" personal. Before he became a zombie when he attacked that girl in part 3 during her backstory, according to the what I've heard he didn't attack her to murder but to "assault". The other time was when Tommy brought him back, he really really wanted to kill him more than any of the other victims he had available.
A whole cabin of little kids and he chooses to go after Tommy first.

The third act is happening on a construction site because there was originally a whole subplot related to that (Voorhees house being demolished, I think?) and it made the plot a bit more fleshed out and coherent. The runtime would have been around 2 hours. David Goyer was hired before shooting to trim down the script and write new scenes to make the story work anyway. Which explains a bunch of expository dialogs to move from one scene to the next sometimes.

Regarding the "look" of Jason. If you go back to the Friday the 13th game, how there are various versions of Jason from the series of movies. So I won't consider this spoilers to the movies... (I won't spoil any specifics to the movies, just info you would know from the game)
Friday 1 was mommy of course.
Friday 2-4, he was more a deranged human. You got to see his face once. Although disfigured, he had some hair and such. He went from sack head to the hockey mask eventually. He would get injured and show reaction to it. He could survive some seemingly fatal damage, but nothing was too extreme on that. 4 was subtitled "The Final Chapter" for a reason... at the time.
5 continued things from the previous story.
6-8 Introduced Zombie Jason. Story continues in 6. But now Jason is decomposing, and seemingly invincible. Nothing really seems able to end him. I know many disliked 7, but it's one of my favorites, it also was the first one I watched seriously and all the way through. In 7, Jason had my favorite look, you could see his teeth through his missing cheek, you could see his rib cage. Literally decomposing. 8 kinda kept that look, but the end revelation was the most disappointing thing ever for me.
9 was meant to be the final chapter again. How do we kill Zombie Jason? Well we do some stuff many fans really ended up disliking, and adding new lore that I think went over about the same. He did seem disfigured but maybe not as decomposing like previous movies. The unrated directors cut whatever, had some amazing kills theatrical people didn't get to see.
X seemed more like an evolution of 2-4's look. He seemed disfigured, but not really decomposed. His head seemed to have more hair than usual (maybe even Kane Hodder's real hair). He did seem pretty invincible though. Of course, in the movie he eventually becomes Uber Jason, the half man?, half machine, all evil being. Jason in Space.
Then you have FvJ. I'd say he looked like an evolution of 2-4's Jason mixed with aspects from 9 and X. He seems invincible but not decomposed, and bigger and bald.
Friday Remake (I don't hate this one like some do) he retains again the maybe disfigured, but big and strong guy. I don't think he is invincible in this one, more like 2-4.
So I'd say each one he pretty much has his own look, though there might be similarities.

This movie takes a lot of liberties with the Jason lore, but I'm not sure that's a huge deal, because Jason's own movies often contradict his own lore. And the timeline of the films makes no sense whatsoever. Jason's look is pretty unique in this movie. They purposely made him more like Frankenstein's monster. Much, much taller than he is in the other movies (in order to contrast with Freddy -- the most popular Jason, Kane Hodder, is barely taller than Robert Englund) and moves much more stiffly. I kind of like the ratty hobo look, but the head prosthetic has some super detailed painting that is just washed out to black with the movie's lighting. it's very light gray with a lot of progressively darker veins painted all over it. Looks one color in the movie.
The film itself -- it's fun, but not great. There's a great video somewhere on the internet of the girl who plays Laurie at a comic con somewhere, tweaked out of her mind on meth or some other kind of speed. The Friday movies are all about the boobies, except for Part 6. I can't say I mind seeing some boobies from time to time, but it's a big reason why the Friday movies are so trashy. Especially Part 5. Boobies galore in that one.
Doesn't make a lot of sense how they're able to drive from Ohio to New Jersey so quickly. Movie magic, I guess.

  • @ScreamingDoom
    @ScreamingDoom Год назад +1

The pedo vibes are definitely intentional. Originally, Freddy Kruger was explicitly a pedo, but in the 1980s there was a big scandal around a preschool supposedly having systematic pedoness with its charges, so the script was changed so that it became subtext. Much, much later it came out that the scandal was a combination of kids lying (and being encouraged to lie via institutional bias) and parent hysteria.
Regardless, the pedo vibe is there and continues through most of the movies. While the Nightmare series might not be overly sexual in so far as straight up skin, there is a definite underlying creepy sexual nature in the way Freddy interacts with his victims.
One thing I always found interesting about this film is just how incredibly frustrated Freddy gets at Jason being a killstealer and being unable to directly harm the guy. One of the main reasons Freddy in life went after little kids was because they were easy to overpower and hunt. Freddy doesn't want a challenge; he wants to be in control and able to play with his prey. Thus why when people fight back, he gets increasingly annoyed and angry.
So part of the explanation why Freddy mostly goes after teenagers now is because he CAN just as easily. In dreams, teens are no more able to fight back than his original elementary school aged victims were and teenagers have a lot more problems and hangups and interests that he can use to torment them before going into the final kill. Teens are an aged wine to the little kids' fermenting grape juice.
There's a bit of a difference in the way that Freddy and Jason go about their kills. Freddy is sadistic and enjoys the hunt and terrorizing his victims just as much (if not moreso) than the final kill. Jason, while very brutal, doesn't derive much -- if any -- enjoyment out of his work. It's just a thing he has to do, so he's much more straight forward and blunt and only really engages in stalking to get a bead on his target. Once he moves, he kills in the most efficient way he has available.
I don't think the Nightmare remake is quite as bad as its reputation suggests, though. It has some neat expansion on the lore (with the microsleep episodes providing some really cool visuals) and, had they kept Freddy's attitude and motivation through the entire movie, would be a different take on the character. But that's a discussion for when you see it. :)

I saw the original ANOE(84) on opening night and the Final chapter the same year. You are dead on with both. Freddy uses your fears and tortures his victims. Jason is so skilled with weapons and being a hunter with his kills. If needed he will go through a wall regardless of how many if he wants you. The hype and talk of this battle started after Dream Warriors and Jason Lives. It seemed like a pipe dream till Jason goes to Hell.
We saw how powerful Freddy can become if it's not just Elm street kids afraid. In FvJ, Jason's rampage put the whole town of Springwood in fear. After Jason Lives we know Jason was powered up to the level of Freddy so this became a fun debate. Both hit pop culture which is rare. They were by far the 2 most popular and powerful during the peak of the slasher genre.
I explained to some that Micheal wasn't an Icon near the level of these 2. His original film was iconic like "The Shining" but he was dormant for 7 years in the 80's. When he did return he was considered a far weaker version of Jason. I loved Halloween but the films bombed when they started to copy the Friday formula. The og Friday was meant to be a Halloween ripoff but the roles took a dramatic turn due Jason's iconic fans. I loved the Elm street films but enjoyed Friday for what they were. Popcorn fun. My brother preferred Friday. That was common. Freddy did well with casual horror fans but Jason's cult following was huge to the genre.
This has to be the best Vs. film ever created.

You're pretty much right about the Friday movies. They're mostly just more of the same though parts 4, 6, and 7 take big steps in Jason's evolution. Jason Goes to Hell is batshit crazy. Jason X is ridiculous but fun, the beginning features David Cronenberg and addresses Jason's fate after the previous films. A Smallville-type series died in development called Crystal Lake Chronicles and would have been a teen horror/drama occasionally featuring Jason. There was always a rumor that there would be 13 movies in the series with the last one being the definitive end. If you count Freddy vs Jason the next movie will be part 13.

Great reaction to this highly enjoyable film!. I've always loved this one. The little nods to previous films, Jason walking through that field on fire is one of my favourite scenes, the fight between the two was really well done too. I know you're not that interested but Friday 13th parts 3 and 4 are well worth a look to give you more about Jason's look, etc. Part six would explain why he's almost unstoppable, part 8 (in New York) is dumb as hell but very entertaining when he finally gets there and part 10 (in space) is one of those wonderfully daft films that you can't help but enjoy!. Maybe not reaction worthy but do give them a watch if/when you have the time.
It always intrigues me that Freddy was this child killing, possible pedo and yet he became a mainstream icon, hell, even kids walk around on Halloween dressed as him. Very strange!. Oh yeah, the Nightmare remake is poor and genuinely considered one of the worst remakes, up there with The Wicker Man, so good luck with that one. 😀

Just discovered your channel and enjoying watching all these reactions. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this (or if you know) but in regards to all the "pedo vibes", Freddy Krueger was originally a child rapist as Wes Craven said that was the most evil thing he could think a person would do, but dropped it after a string of reported incidents in the news of that fearing it would be too controversial. I definitely think that Robert Englund chose to keep that unspoken detail in his performance of Freddy.

This came on the heels of Jason X (2000), where Jason goes to the future and space. This was basically a back to basics reboot for both characters, with the goofiness of the later Elm St's. The director Ronny Yu had just done Bride of Chucky, which was also very self aware and rebooted Chucky for a new generation... before that he made Hong Kong horror & martial arts movies.... and with this movie he wanted it to basically have a WWE feel.. and I think he pulled it off. I went to see this a few times in the theater, but the first time, opening weekend.. you have NO idea how hyped the crowd was. It was the closest thing to going to Wrestlemania I can think off.. people were stomping, chanting, shouting for their favorite slasher, throwing stuff at the screen.. it was pandemonium. Im sure this bothered some people but the atmosphere in that theater (and im sure many others) was ELECTRIC.. the kind of collective adrenaline that lingers after the movie is over. People had been waiting for this for a long time and it certainly delivered on the title. This movie isn't "art" but in the right context with the right crowd it's a blast.
Friday the 13th is worth getting into beyond 2. They get more fun as they go.. sillier.. like Freddy did. If you're gonna see any standalone movie of the series, see PART 6, JASON LIVES... it's the most fun, self aware, and accessible (though you might miss the backstory of the hero Tommy Jarvis if you don't see part 4 and 5).

Dan, The great thing with the ANOE and Friday franchises is their in sequence. Outside of a New Nightmare and Jason X this is picked up right after Dream Child and Jason goes to Hell with the outlier showing Freddy's demise in the Final Nightmare.
I saw this at Hack n Slash at a festival outside of Austin with Robert and the crew. Then again opening night. You are right about the energy, when Jason knocked the door down and we hear " come to Freddy" the whole theater stood up.
Freddy became so powerful in the real world because it wasn't just the Elm street kids afraid but the whole town of Springwood due to Jason's carnage. I don't think Jason showed fear in dream world. It was confusion over his mother. He finally realized he was awoken out of his slumber by Freddy.
People thought Jason was afraid of water. That was false in the script. Freddy kills after he exploits your fears. When Freddy said " Lets dig a bit deeper" he saw Jason's dreams. Constant killing machine from vengence from the drowning. He saw a really disturbed individual. When Freddy started to drown Jason it put Jason in a rage and he woke up.
These 2 were the Kings of the slasher genre during the peak in the 80's. Both are very unique on the way they kill. Freddy exploits your fears and turtures his victims. Jason is very skilled. Nobody uses weapons like Jason.
The hype started after Dream Warriors and Jason Lives. Jason was powered up to the level of Freddy. Both were by far the most popular and powerful. These 2 Titan slashers hit pop culture in a way that really made this the collision of all VS films.
Think about today Dan. Freddy would still work today due to dreams. You can't replace Robert so go with a demonic version and Zombie Jason being in a desolite remote area with no cell service. They need to reboot both darker and it ends in a remake of FvJ.

Not the og actor for Jason's mom, when they asked her actress she turned it down for being too small of a part. I'm glad they brought back Hypnocil, its such an interesting element only 2 of all the movies tackled. The more Friday the 13th films you see the easier FVJ is to appreciate, and Jason looks the closest to his appearance in Jason X here with the jacket+gloves. In Nightmare 1 the mom emphasizes on the "filthy" when she calls Freddy a filthy child murderer, kinda confirming or at least heavily supporting the pedo theory not to mention the remake embracing it.

They said it in the Never Sleep Again documentary, they been trying to make this crossover happen since this the mid 80s. It couldn't happen at the time due to both characters being on different movie studio's (Freddy on New Line and Jason on Paramount). One of them F13 movies ended up flopping in box office (I forgot which one cause I don't watch Jason) and Paramount was done making Friday The 13th movies, until Jason ended up being taking in by New Line. They just weren't allowed to use the "Friday the 13th" title.
Since then, they been trying to come up with a good script for years and it was challenging, considering that both characters had different background. Then the director Ronnie Yu (who had just directed Bride Of Chucky) never seen either Freddy or Jason movies but he watched them both and used his creative skills to come up with a decent script. Freddy vs Jason was definitely a needed film for the horror culture. It may not have been scary but it was highly entertaining.
Fun Fact: The original ending was going to be setup, to where this giant devil hand comes from out of the ground and pulls both Freddy and Jason to hell. And as they were about to continue to battle there, they both get interrupted by Pinhead from Hellraiser, basically to play the peacekeeper 😂😂. It didn't happen because they didn't have enough money in their budget, to make it happen. Also Pinhead is from another movie studio. Me personally, I'm glad that didn't happen because I felt like it would have been overdoing it a little to add another horror movie killer in the mix. And I wasn't digging the theatrical ending either because they made Jason look like a hero and he had some help, which kinda killed the whole vibe. But it was acceptable, ig lol

In the 80's, Freddy and Jason was by far the the 2 most popular and powerful during the slasher peak. After Dream Warriors and Jason Lives the hype for a crossover was huge. Jason was powered up to the level of Freddy and the debate was on.
What most don't know is that Micheal wasn't big in the 80's. He was dormant for 7 years and was considered a weaker version of Jason. Many were upset when they tried to have Micheal copy the Friday formula when he was prior to both. So Halloween films bombed till Jaime came back to the franchise. Halloween was great for being it's own thing. My point is Freddy and Jason was a perfect match of opposites.
I was a huge ANOES fan and my brother loved Friday 13th. FvJ was popcorn fun and incredible that it happened. The hype was insane. It was odd to discuss a fight between two evil supernatural slashers. These 2 were so popular in pop culture it became a thing.
The pacing was fantastic. Freddy became so powerful in FvJ because it wasn't just Elm street kids afraid but the whole town of Springwood.
They need to reboot both Freddy and Jason and go dark. Both still work today. Jason in a remote area with no cell service and Freddy in your dreams. Make Freddy more demonic. You can't replace Robert. They could still do Zombie Jason and do 3-4 films that leads to a remake of FvJ.

he didn’t write the script. it was two american men who were fans of both franchises. they intentionally added the water thing so freddy would be able to use something against him in the dream world.

Love the commentary! ❤. My parents let me watch Nightmare on elm Street because it didn't have nudity. I couldn't watch the Jason movies. Halloween movies were too boring for me. I think that's why I became a Freddy fan and still am to this day.

I can understand why you might stay away from doing the Friday the 13th series. But you might want to give Part 6 a watch. It brings in a lot of Gothic Horror vibes to this basic slasher series. Also Kevin Williamson has said in interviews that Friday part 6 was a big inspiration for his Scream script.

Yeah, original Freddy had the pedo part in his background, but Craven removed it because he was afraid of backlash. The remake put it in though.

Id say in this movie, Jason's look is most similar to Friday the 13th 6 Jason Lives. Thats also a movie where he comes out of the grave in the beginning. So it's got a similar dirty vibe to him and rotting flesh.

I legitimately enjoy this movie - no "so bad it's good" weaseling from me, this is a good movie! A great modern version of what Universal used to call "monster rally" films, like FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN or ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. (GODZILLA VS. KING KONG and the recent GODZILLA VS. KONG remake also rate highly.) This movie knows exactly what it's about and mostly delivers. As you mentioned the makeup and effects are a lot truer to the Freddy concept, nowhere near the rubbery look of NEW NIGHTMARE. The director, Ronny Yu, also did the amazing (yes! amazing!) BRIDE OF CHUCKY 5 years before this. If you're looking for a new franchise to check out and you haven't seen it already, I highly, HIGHLY recommend the CHILD'S PLAY/CHUCKY series of movies and TV. It's kind of a minor miracle - same actor playing the villain, same writer/director involved with the whole series on some level, and the series veers from straight horror, to parody, back to horror, without ignoring or retconning any of it.
I believe Robert Englund did one more appearance as Freddy Krueger after this - a guest shot on a 2018 episode of 1980s-set sitcom THE GOLDBERGS. He has said repeatedly that he is officially retired from the role, for health reasons. I can only imagine how grueling it would be for a 76-year-old to sit through hours of makeup and then have to run around and kill people on camera. The remake, I don't know...I didn't HATE it, but it left almost no impression on me and I've never felt the urge to revisit it, despite being a huge fan of the franchise, so, take from that what you will.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, always love your reactions.

9:25 Anyone who says Freddy wasn’t a pedo is in denial 😂 It was even described in the first Nightmare movie by Nancy’s mom that he was not only a child murderer but a “Filthy child murder.” He may have a colorful sense of humor but let’s not forget what he really is people. 😂

I noticed you're wearing a Simpsons shirt, looks like one of the Treehouse of horrors? In the 90s, Robert Enlund voiced Freddy in one of the Treehouse of horror episode, but not the one that's an Elm Street parody.
