This is the first film (that I know of) that did the "call is coming from the house" thing. The movie "When a Stranger Calls" is most famous for it, but that movie didn't come out until 5 years later.

In chronological order it should be like this: Jacob was married to a Sarah and had three kids. The little one got killed by a truck under Jacob’s supervision and that’s something he never forgave himself for. At the same time, Jacob was finishing a PHd in philosophy. A way to cope with his favorite son’s loss was to enlist in the army and go to Nam. This probably was the breaking point of his marriage with Sarah and she ends kicking him out of the house. While working as a postman he actually meets Jezzie before being drafted to Nam. I see him being drafted as a means to punish himself for losing his beloved son. Once in Nam, all of his platoon gets a dose of BZ drug. If you watch carefully, Jacob is one of the few privates that DOESN’T do the drug, that’s why he begins helping his ailing friends but gets stabbed in the gut with a bayonet though we never know who the perpretator really is until the very end. The rest of the movie is about Jacob’s coming to terms with his untimely death and seeking his son’s forgiveness. Many people overlook how important Gabe is in the whole story (Gabe being Jacob’s dead son). Though being an extremely frightening film, it’s also one of the saddest pieces of cinema of the last 40 years. While people debate endelessly about movies like “The Shining”, they often forget superior fare like “Jacob’s Ladder”, which grows on you with each repeating viewing. This is by far Jeff Lyne’s masterwork and Tim Robbins shining hour. Too bad the film was criminally overlooked at the Oscars, giving the accolades to “Ghost”, another Bruce Joel Rubin masterpiece. Though “Ghost”is an amazing and entertaining film dealing with a similar subject, I find “Jacob’s Ladder” the superior film. Though much less commercial than “Ghost”, its impact is more everlasting to the point that Bruce Joe Rubin (the writer of both films) prefers “Jacob’s Ladder” over “Ghost”, even though the latter gave him an Oscar. To this very date, I can’t sing “Sonny Boy”, by Al Jolson… Maurice Jarre piano version of the same song has to be one of the saddest, most heartfelt pieces of music I’ve ever heard. The mere listening to this tune, puts me in a very sad mood and tears roll off my cheeks. Yeah, some of you might think I’m some sort of sentimental geek, but I love the song even though it hurts me like few songs can. “Jacob’s Ladder” is one of my top 10 movies of all time.

A great Halloween movie. The effects of the transformation were groundbreaking at the time. It's great fun, scary at times, fun, and the ending was abrupt, but when she says I love you, and he recognises her, but realises he has to get shot to honor and save her, was wonderful I think.

I pretty much agree entirely with your review. The movie would've been much better if it only had taken place within the concert venue. I think the whole movie just completely falls apart once they leave the venue; the somewhat grounded aspects of the movie just end and the whole thing becomes ridiculous. This is especially jarring because the first part of the movie IS so grounded, so the change shows up even more. The concert headliner woman was in it far too much; they even made her the hero at the end (seriously, WTF?). She would've been better utilized as a background and *maybe* as a final gambit by Cooper (taking her hostage or something). Her over inclusion definitely made the movie seem much more like a vanity project than a real film. I do somewhat disagree regarding showing Cooper's failures. I rather liked that; too often, serial killers in film are depicted as Batman-like planners where everything goes according to that plan until it doesn't. Seeing Cooper do attempt to do things that didn't work was a nice break from that. Having the wife be the actual serial killer and Cooper just desperately protecting his broken wife would've been a nice twist. I kinda wonder if that was in the script to begin with, but M. Night wanted to get away from his 'What a twist!' reputation and changed it. Regardless, if the wife was the killer, it would've been a nice commentary on how utterly terrible "profilers" are in real life (in proper double-blind scientific tests, trained profilers do no better at identifying aspects of serial killers than completely untrained amateurs). Just like serial killers themselves, profilers are ascribed nearly magical abilities in most movies. Considering the first part of the movie was so grounded, making it so the profiler was entirely wrong as to the aspects of the killer would've dovetailed nicely. Great review!

I actually didn't know about the nepotism so I was dumbfounded by what seemed like a concert film. I turned it off after 30 minutes and looked up an Ending Explained video and was ecstatic I didn't waste my time but shook my head at M. trying to pass his daughter off as an actor capable of co-leading a film. If it wasn't for Josh Hartnett, I wouldn't have given this movie the time of day. Knock At the Cabin is worth a watch and is good material for a potential reaction video!

Hey, Sydney! This film was fantastic! It successfully tied the prequels into the sequels while adding new lore and very sympathetic characters. This is the installment that could unite the fandom! The Alpha Xenomorph that bore the scars of Bjorn's cattleprod saved Raine precisely for the reasons you stated but it was working in tandem with a facehugger in the shaft for whom it was restraining her! The facehugger was crawling towards her when Andy let go of the elevator. Holm's widow and children approved of the use of his likeness stating he loved the character and would have participated had he been able to. The prop was animatronic with digital touch-ups. It's an organic addition to the story as he is the appropriate generational model the company would employ for R&D work during this time period and it subtly speaks to the disposability of Company employees which is what he was researching anyway by trying to create a durable workforce. Alvarez felt the other androids had multiple appearances and wanted to give Holm another showcase. Your default setting explanation makes perfect sense. If actors have an issue about posthumous use of their likeness where even descendants can't be trusted to honor their wishes, then they need to consult with an attorney to stipulate how their image may be used. New Xenomorph lore: resin cocoon capable of maintaining viability in vacuum, facehugger heat detection, variable metabolism contingent on circumstances, post-molting chestburster pupa, black goo taxonomic nomenclature revealed as 'plagiarus praepotens' (powerful mimic). Xenomorph-human hybrid first seen in "Alien Resurrection" birthed by a Queen with a uterus rather than an ovipositor. New Weyland-Yutani lore: some terraformed planets like Yvaga are INDEPENDENT of the Company, corporate interest in a durable slave workforce, knowledge of the truth about the 'Nostromo' incident at the highest levels. Only criticism was the Ripley line used by Andy out of context. The xenomorph was a male drone! It made no sense! They should have established Andy practicing clumsily with swear words earlier. It could have been used in a scene where Bjorn was harassing him. The payoff would have been his action hero takedown of the Alpha! "Get away from her, you [fill-in-the-blank]!"
