Shout out to the dad in this movie, he goes through quite the character arch between the two movies from going to a disapproving alcoholic father to a really supportive and caring dad, it’s quite the transformation and good use of Continuity
I didn’t harp on that a ton but I honestly LOVE that. It’s so rare in these movies to have redemption like that and he actually comes across as being really supportive. It’s great
The actress who played Greta Gibson played the fictional actress Selina Swift playing the fictional character Emerald in the fictional soap opera “Invitation to Love” that the characters of TWIN PEAKS frequently watch in the first two seasons!
I've often thought about the role Nancy's house serves in this series. I don't think Freddy ever really got over Nancy defeating him. She was the first to do so after he became ... whatever the hell it is that he is (that's never adequately explained). Taking over her house and making it his house of horrors probably feels like a triumph to him. Also, he killed Marge there; that was probably (I don't believe it occurred prior to this) the first time he killed someone directly responsible for his own death. But I also think it's a sign of respect, as Nancy has always been his true nemesis and she defeated him through sheer force of will. As for this installment, I have soft spot for it in my heart. Growing up a pro-choice Catholic, this movie and the themes it explores really impacted me as a child. Also, I love Alice. She was little more than a vessel in part four, but the character growth she's given in this one, primarily because Lisa Wilcox was actually allowed to act, makes her a worthy successor (in my eyes) to Nancy. Great reaction, and thanks for continuing the series!
Fun fact about "Nancy's House" from the novelizations and how it ties into Freddy's history. So, in the novelization of Part 3: Dream Warriors, Nancy's house was originally a small institution for women. Just a smaller place called "Hathaway House." That is where Amanda Krueger went when she was pregnant with Freddy, as well as where he was born. She was not a nun, but a patient transferred from a different institution, yet essentially the same terrible thing happened to her at the previous institution. So, Amanda Krueger gave birth to Freddy in what would become Nancy's house. The institution, itself, grew bigger and as a "neighborhood" was growing around it, they transferred to another building and became what we saw in Part 3; however, since "Nancy's House" was where Freddy was born, it is the reason that it keeps showing up in dreams, etc. Now, Part 3's novelization was based on the original script of Part 3 by Wes Craven, which changed a bit for the ultimate shooting script. There are a lot of the same things (Nancy, Kristen, Neil, Taryn, etc.), but other big changes happened, too, and I guess that is where they decided to scrap this idea that it was where Freddy was born. I like that it gives a more concrete reason for why this house keeps getting used, but at the same time, it would be quite a coincidence. As always, great reaction and please keep pushing through to Wes Craven's New Nightmare (part 7). I have no doubts about raising your expectations for it, because it is that good. It is not super scary, but it is a smart, clever and ingenious movie that serves as the bridge to what Wes Craven would do in Scream. Part 6, like Part 5, definitely leans on the cheesier elements, so brace yourself for that. Like I said in your Part 4 reaction, Part 6's director was inspired by Twin Peaks BUT I want to emphasize Part 6 is nowhere as great as Twin Peaks or anything. A part of Part 6 is meant to be watched in 3D, so if you do not watch it in 3D (which makes sense for a reaction), it does come off even cheesier. So, just wanted to give you a heads up about that, too.
I really dig this one. I didn’t when I was younger but it has grown on me so much. I agree with you in that I like Alice more here. She has really grown and progressed. I really liked it because I loved the gothic imagery of Westin Hills and the continuation of the mythology established in part 3. And I liked that they were trying to age the stories with the audience (by having the Teens graduate high school & think about the future) and that it tackled serious issues like teen pregnancy, abortion, and eating disorders. I also thought it was a really moving touch to actually show the characters crying and grieving the loss of their friends in this one. It brought back more of the serious weight to me that the earlier films had. The finale was such a cool sequence and I love that they combined the sets of the boiler room, Nancy’s house, Westin Hills, and the Church in the upside down sequence. New Line said they tried to make this film more serious and balance the themes of the earlier films with the quippy satirical edge personality Freddy developed in the later films. For me, I think they succeeded. As a lot of the deaths were cruel and the atmosphere as a whole was really dark while also having some funny one-liners (“Bad Year Dan!”)
Once again very creative kills, set pieces, great practical effects, I love Alice, I like how once again this movie is being creative using the dreams of a baby of Alice to go after people, and more Amanda Krueger backstory. Notice how once again they used something religious to beat Freddy a nun (his mother). I still like really like this movie I can acknowledge it’s faults but I grew up watching parts 3-5 the most as it’s own dream trilogy since they really are the only movies in this franchise that do creative sequences and deaths the next one is a very big drop of quality from this movie. Alice being the first established character to survive 2 encounters with Freddy is really impressive and no one talks about it.
Well congrats on making it through the official Elm Street storyline. It kinda ends here without going into spoilers. So if you are looking for continuity moving forward, it isn't really a thing. With that said, still looking forward to your viewing of Freddy's Dead, New Nightmare and F v J. :)
Awsome review as always. You always help brighten the mood. Alice was Nancy for the late 80's early 90's kids. I for one was happy with that. Keep rockin
Freddy's motivation was never about the Elm Street parents. That was his EXCUSE. He was killing before they burned him, and for the same reason he was killing after as a dream demon. He was just a psychopath and he enjoyed it.
Mark sounds sarcastic because he's a prototypical Gen X teenager. Actors with the exact same kind of face and voice type are everywhere in "teen angst" movies and TV until about 1995, then they just disappear. Randall from "Clerks" was one of the last.
I like they didn't play it safe and dared to go places. They could have just made a normal movie, a movie that people would enjoy watching, but instead they dared to show things people don't want to see and talk about things that are not entertaining in a horror movie, like teen pregnancy and abortion. Nobody wants to think about that in a horror movie that is supposed to be fun. I think they intended this movie to be uncomfortable instead of entertaining. I think it's meant to be gross and dark and uncomfortable. I give them credit for that, for not being obliged to the tastes of the audience.
To be fair I don’t think it’s a horror movies job or any movie for that matter to have any type of representation of mental illness. Movies don’t have to be the moral police all the time. Let alone the fact, you could argue that they are just using certain types of people who have a mental illness. There are definitely people who have a mental illness that has/have done some evil things. People you wouldn’t even know have a mental illness because on they outside they seem “normal”. No knock on you but yea most people don’t go to the movies thinking I hope they represent every group of people the right way. Most people just want a good movie. Plus at the time this movie came out, people were a lot less sensitive about things. As far as the movies getting sillier and more comedic, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait until you see the next one. Funny thing is 4 is my favorite and next one that you’ll watch is a guilty pleasure of mine even though it’s definitely one of of not the worst ones of the franchise. When it comes to the dreams being so over the top, it’s like kills in Friday the 13th and Halloween or any other slasher. As the movies go on, they have to get more creative with the kills. Friday has a lot more leg room in the genre though because most people don’t have have the same dreams let alone any, so him popping up in any dream means an endless possibility of kills. Sorry long comment but as far as him being a kid killer, the studios can’t have Freddy killing young kids in movies because nobody would want to go see that let alone a whole franchise of it. So I think they stick to teenagers and seniors who graduated are usually still teenagers. He did finish off the elm street kids in 4 but after that he obviously still wants to kill. So he used Kristen in 4 to bring in new kids to so that he could now move on to them. So now he uses Alice to bring more kids. We can assume he’ll continue to use other kids to bring in more kids. When it comes to him being in reality and dreams, the second movie played with that idea. Basically saying the stronger he gets, it seems he can kill without people dreaming. In this movie he was using Alice’s baby which we can assume has Alice’s power and brings people into the babies dreams. He was getting really strong from it and most likely able to not need people to be asleep. This is definitely 2nd on the bottom of my Nightmare movie list but I just thought maybe I’d try to help explain something’s.
This was a good bridge to "New Nightmare". They snuck in the next one for money reasons. Excellent reaction. Also, you should get a fixed microphone ( if you have the budget ). Have a great day!
I wish I could set up a better filming set up. Unfortunately the past few videos have been demonetized due to copyright and I really don’t make anything from these videos….yet hopefully!
@@ScaredPale Have you considered setting up a Patreon. Would genuinely be happy to support you in some way because I love your reactions and take on things. You have a lot more depth to your commentary than a lot of others.
Freddy's Dead is.....the reason Wes Craven came back and did New Nightmare; I'll just say that. Also it stars Billy Zane's sister Lisa and she mostly pretty good in it.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought Greta looked like Lady in the Radiator from Eraserhead. This movie and alao Freddy's Dead probably sowed the seeds for me becoming a Lynch fan. Btw there's an unrated version only on VHS where it shows that Greta is actually being fed her own guts. Sorry, I nerd out with these corny films. I was obsessed at way too young an age.
Whether the films work or not,one of the great things about the Elm street franchise is that they always tried to do something different. I mean, this is a horror film from 1989 that brings up pregnancy and abortion. Pretty ballsy. Now,being an Elm Street fanatic since the 80's I remember when this movie came out. The filmmakers really wanted to try and make Freddy scary again. It was mentioned in several issues of Fangoria and the like. The movie itself was darker than part 4,but Freddy was still a pretty goofy character. Overall, not a great movies, but it had great moments. Dan's death in particular was wonderful.
I agree, it’s very tricky bringing up this subject matters. Very similar to Black Christmas. I definitely applaud films trying to sincerely bring up these controversial matter
I used to dislike this one, but it really grew on me after a couple rewatches. It needed a darker Freddy and some more work on the script, but I LOVE the atmosphere and gothic style of it, the motorcycle kill is a favorite, and yeah Alice is way better than she was in 4. The kid is still annoying though lol.
As far as the definition of "children" being ambiguous, the story Wes Craven wrote was certainly an allegory for the burning of the head of the Knights Templar and the official disbanding of that order (beginning with a raid on Friday The 13th, by the way) which is attributed to the Roman Catholics of the time. Eventually their "children" in the form of the Roman Catholics of many centuries later, if not the actual biological descendants of those blamed for the fate of the templars, came to pursue the American Dream and had it turned into a nightmare and destroyed on Elm Street in Dallas in November of 1963.
I think a lot of older sequels would have a recap or rehash of previous plot points because people would often watch a sequel without watching the previous movies. I know when I was a kid in the 90's sneaking to watch scary movies on cable, they'd often show only some of the sequels, not the main movies. Llke USA Network wouid often show Child's Play 2 and 3 together, but rarely did I ever see the first one on. With these, 5 seemed to be the one that always came on. Can't remember what channel, but it was almost always this one. Then maybe a year or 2 after New Nightmare came out, that one was always on TNT. Maybe it was all about how cheap they were to run on their network.
I tend to think the portrayal of the mentally ill has to do with the horrid conditions. When you treat someone as subhuman, they can never have hope of recovery...
We are being SPOILED! Yes! Let’s get the trash out of the way so we can get to New Nightmare! Considering the first Nightmare On Elm Street is my favourite first movie of any franchise, the way it gradually became a goofy spoof series was so disappointing. New Nightmare reset the ridiculousness in the same way H20 did for Halloween and I love it so much.
How would you say this one ranks in comparison to the others (so far)? Another Great reaction too! I loved how you draw the parallels to the first film! I can’t wait for you to watch Freddy’s Dead. I honestly love it. The Twin Peaks meets John Waters vibe with a deconstruction of the series itself and popular culture makes it a really funny, surreal, and timely finale for the series in my humble opinion.
This one was rough! I think Nancy's house is just used as an anchor point, because there's no logical reason for Freddy to even exist anymore past Kincaid an Joey's death. So it has to be on Elm Street. I think this was the one that started filming the death gags before they had a script, and reverse engineered the script to fit the FX. They were shooting before a Director was even hired. Friend group was abysmal, did not care about any them at all, especially the one who actually lived. Why did she live btw? They spent all that budget on her nightmare sequences only for her to live? Like, why? She was the least likable of all the friends group. It was tedious. Disliked the blurred lines between the dream world and reality, it was stupid. They should be dreaming, but they mostly aren't! Reverse engineered. Freddy's look wasn't great either. Thought that Jacob kid was gross and weird! Like, what? 😆 Not looking forward to the rest of these, but gotta get em under my belt. See ya on the next one 🥺😆
This one will always be at the bottom of the list for me. As I said in your last video I didn't like it when it came out and don't now. It was just so over the top goofy, which at this point Freddy was doing talk shows and genuinely seen as a fun, mainstream character so it sort of made sense they'd move away from the creepy atmosphere of the first and third ones. At least we still have New Nightmare to come so it's not all bad. 😀
Love all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies but this is definitely the worst one, they had to cut so much out of it, would have been much better the full uncut version
What? People disbelieving a victim in a horror movie has nothing to do with 'portraying women as hysterical'. Andy Barclay had one of the most famous and extensive cases of it happen to him in Child's Play, it happened to Jesse in this franchise, Mike in Phantasm, Tommy Jarvis in the Friday The 13th franchise, etc. etc. etc.
This and 6 are my least favorite, but i hafta say i love love the 80s gothic visuals this one brought. Ngl i didnt vibe w the whole baby thing and found the kid annoying lol. But what i love about this franchise is that every one has it's own identity, feel, and new dream/nightmare related ideas and plots. It's definitely one of the most inventive franchises bc of that. This one has the worst friend group of all the movies imo 😅 but what i love is Alice's relationship with her dad. It really grounds the movie in a way thats missing from 4. Also even tho i prefer Kirsten and Nancy is my 1 for life, i like that Alice got a happy ending and healed relationship with her father. It feels full circle from Nancy to Kirsten to Alice, as they all share similar "generational" trauma so to speak, bc of freddy and bad/absent parents.
I'm a die-hard Freddy fan and this one stinks. Haha. There are some touches I like. You mentioned the dad's redemption arc, and I particularly liked his scene where he mentions his dead son indirectly, very well done. And Lisa Wilcox is given a lot more to work with here than she got in the previous movie. And I love the IDEA (not the execution) of Freddy as a comic book superhero. However, for the most part it looks cheap and murky, the stop-motion is jarring and visually inconsistent with the rest of the film, and the story mostly sucks. I cut this series some slack with continuity because it blurs the line between dream and reality, but there's a constant whiplash in terms of Freddy's motivations, almost like two groups of writers warring for control of the character. Sometimes, he wants to keep killing kids, first as revenge and then to absorb their souls and grow stronger; other times, he focuses on returning to the corporeal world. This movie seems to mash those motives together, sort of. He's either using Alice's baby as a new conduit to keep killing victims, or, he's sort of mutating the baby into sort of a Mini-Me Freddy, which he'll inhabit and so be born again? Maybe? It's never really explained and that's a problem. These two goals seem mutually exclusive to me. In keeping with the idea that Freddy is shaped, somewhat, by the dreamers themselves, perhaps he returns whenever someone becomes afraid thinking about him, and their fear allows him to reconstitute himself but he's a little different each time. That might smooth over some of the inconsistencies from movie to movie. (It's post-hoc rationalizing, I know, but whatever) Freddy DOES seem to be getting powerful enough to break through his own constraints; almost like the Joker, who goes to Arkham Asylum every other month but can seemingly escape whenever he wants to, Freddy gets banished or destroyed at the end of every movie but just returns whenever he feels like it. The director, Stephen Hopkins, has said that when he first came to Hollywood he tried to inject seriousness into these genre movies (he also directed PREDATOR 2 after this) and looking back he feels he was mistaken, that these aren't made to have heavy emotional consequences or to show the true nature of violence unflinchingly. He also said that New Line really hacked up his submitted cut of the film and that he hates the theatrical version. The MPAA also demanded significant deletions to some effects scenes to get an R rating. So, all in all, lousy movie; the franchise was definitely on the downswing. I don't think I've seen FREDDY'S DEAD since I saw it in a (nearly-empty!) theater in 1991, so I'm looking forward to revisiting that one.
Hi. If you're open to starting a new tv series, I suggest 1977s THE INCREDIBLE HULK. It lasted 5 seasons, over 80 episodes, award winning, including BEST ACTRESS at the Golden Globe Awards... plus, two of the 2-part episodes were so good, those were released overseas as movies in theaters. Unfortunately most people only remember the terrible 80s tv movies. Those had the same actors, but they ruined the reputation of the high quality TV series. It was a serious drama about a scientist, who turns into a very convincing green beast, after a failed lab experiment. All clips I've seen and memes are from the tv movies, which look terrible. So, all negative comments and reactions online are based on those. The Pilot episode is movie quality, it was one of the 2-part episodes released as a theatrical movie. I'm actually surprised no one else has reacted to it yet. With the popularity of the Marvel movies and the Hulk, the youtube views are guaranteed.
Thanks for the suggestion! For now I’m sticking to horror for my channel but I appreciate the insight into what sounds like a great series! I also have never stepped into watching the Marvel movies. Seems like too much of a beast of films to catch up on and super hero films in general typically don’t interest me a ton. I have seen the Sam Raimi Spider Man movies, Dead Pool, Black Panther, the Batman movies…but I think that’s it
Aside from Dan'd murder and some of the comic book murder, I've never liked this entry. The best friend who doesn't believe is beyond annoying, Amamda Kreuger set up something interesting in Part 3 that wound up being the stupidity that was the ending of Part 5. The rest, well you kind of hit right on the head.
Yes part 5 , faster than I expected awesome !
After this you have Freddy's dead and then Wes Cravens new nightmare

That motorcycle kill is pretty gnarly!!! Haha the kid is a bit annoying. But I agree needed a darker Freddy
@@ScaredPale check out the uncut version. It's even more fucked up lol
Interesting that ROBERT ENGLUND and MARK HAMILL used to be college roommates 😀😀😀 FUNNY
I only really like 1 and 3. The rest are just ok and nothing more imo. Thanks for the reactions. It’s been fun watching so far.
Omg that’s such a good point. I’ve seen Child’s Play 2 sooo many times but only the first one once or twice haha
So, how's Part 4 looking now Syd?
Hi Sydney! Of all the horror movies you've seen which is your favorite?
Too hard to answer!!! Depends what season of life I’m in :) I do have a video on my channel breaking down some of my favorites though
Can't wait !
7:00 saying that to your mother, thats so profane xD
Lolol
How would you say this one ranks in comparison to the others (so far)? Another Great reaction too! I loved how you draw the parallels to the first film! I can’t wait for you to watch Freddy’s Dead. I honestly love it. The Twin Peaks meets John Waters vibe with a deconstruction of the series itself and popular culture makes it a really funny, surreal, and timely finale for the series in my humble opinion.
I need to digest them more before ranking so I’m going to do a ranking video at the end of watching all of the series !
@@ScaredPale Yayyy! I can’t wait!
Like, what? 😆
Not looking forward to the rest of these, but gotta get em under my belt. See ya on the next one 🥺😆
Any idea when Freddy's dead part 6 is coming out ?
Hopefully this weekend
Can't wait
New nightmare I'm looking forward to the most
This one will always be at the bottom of the list for me. 😀
@@justindenney-hall5875 Haha. Strangely I enjoyed part 6 more than this, not by much though it has to be said as they're both pretty bad.
❤Superb Review ❤
Love all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies but this is definitely the worst one, they had to cut so much out of it, would have been much better the full uncut version
You're beautiful, Sydney!!! 🔥🥵🥰❤️🌹
🤘👹❤
I prefer dark/macabre/sinister Freddy to silly quipping-Freddy.
Same
I personally feel the acting is worse in this one compared to the previous films
Not a fan of this one
Liked part 4 way better than this .
Wait till you get to part 6.
What? People disbelieving a victim in a horror movie has nothing to do with 'portraying women as hysterical'. Andy Barclay had one of the most famous and extensive cases of it happen to him in Child's Play, it happened to Jesse in this franchise, Mike in Phantasm, Tommy Jarvis in the Friday The 13th franchise, etc. etc. etc.
Good points
@@ScaredPale Thank you!
Yes the dad arc is so great
Yeah, even Robert Englund doesn't like Part 5.
If you're going to watch Freddy vs Jason, then you should watch Jason Goes to Hell first, believe it or not that movie sets up Freddy vs Jason.
Ohh interesting…good to know
Agreed, sillyness degrades a lot of horror, they seemingly always add in the comedic relief to horror films, it is a detriment in my eyes
Didn't like this entry at all Freddy was way too looney tunes in this one compared to part 4. Thoight the cast was worse too compared to part 4.
I actually like this sequel, however I think I’m in the minority
Can't wait for Nightmare 6 Freddy's dead
(It's post-hoc rationalizing, I know, but whatever)
Freddy DOES seem to be getting powerful enough to break through his own constraints; almost like the Joker, who goes to Arkham Asylum every other month but can seemingly escape whenever he wants to, Freddy gets banished or destroyed at the end of every movie but just returns whenever he feels like it.
I 100% agree that it feels like multiple writers fighting over the direction. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I can't stand silly Freddy I like serious Freddy LIke in parts 1 , 2 and mostly in 3
I got plants in my pants and it makes me want to dance so let's take a chance and cultivate some azaleas.
Let's not, and say we did.
By the way you remind me of Kate Winslet. I got tricked by the algorithm (it's a good thing). Sometimes RUclips does things right.
Yippee!!
Has anyone ever told you that you look just like wynonna Ryder
Cassandra Peterson told me that :)
She is awesome I met her at the Raleigh Super Con in Raleigh NC
You look like Kate Winslet!
[art 4 was awesome part 5 was ok
