I went through the same exact thing with this video playing in my TV during the North Korea panic in 2019. Michael’s face was both relieving and absolutely infuriating, never been more panicked in my entire life
I’d hold my friends hand while on the moon....and watch beautiful earth, thinking of my family and knowing with certainty that my body would be recovered, just space out
the last line of the speech he read was a reference to the poem "The Soldier" by Rupert Brooke, which means that the people who wrote this believed that the space race was as real as WWI "If I should die think only this of me, that there's some corner of a foreign field that is forever England."
I would say both. The emergency broadcast really is chilling and is probably a couple million times worse to happen for real but the moon speech is so unimaginably tremendous, profound and literally unmatched in historical significance that I can’t pick.
both are bone chilling, but in different ways. The first one is horrible but you still have hope for life, hope that you can escape. The second one is,as the person above me described, "profound". Knowing that the systems have failed and that youre going to die on the moon, while looking at our beautiful planet. Its beautiful and awe inspiring.

I fell asleep watching vsauce and woke up at 2 am to the sounds of those alarms, followed by an announcement that there were nuclear missiles on their way to the US. You can imagine the kind of morning I had after that.
Holy. Fucking. SHIT Michael...i was watching this on my tv and i walked away for like 2min and im in the kitchen and all of a sudden i hear the EAS sound and i come out to see whats going on, THEN i hear that 'merica is under attack by not 1, but 4 nuclear missiles, AND THAT ITS NOT A DRILL!! I was sitting there with my jaw on the floor until i saw Michael pop his little head up saying "IF"....god damn it.
“Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace... will stay on the moon to Rest In Peace” I don’t remember the last time I heard such eloquent, powerful words. Honestly I cannot fathom having to deliver those words.
I feel that it might have given Nixon mental trauma to have to convey to the entire population of the United States that our flagship heroes of outer space are to be stranded on the moon and die a lonely death while their families and friends watch helplessly. It would be an extremely dark time for the nation and I am grateful it never happened.
“In ancient days, men looked at the stars and saw their heroes reflected back at them in the constellations. In modern days we do much the same, except our heroes are epic men of flesh, and blood” Genuinely one of the most powerful lines ever written imo
It’s not that old, and it’s for a reason. I study meteorology and the communication of warning information. That siren sound was designed in the 1930s just after WWI to be the sound that would alert the most people at a time, mechanically. The digital voice sound was originally devised in the 1980s for NOAA Weather Radio for automated updates and weather reports, so meteorologists didn’t have to be doing it 24/7 while transmitting. Every once in a great while, a live person will still go on-air with the weather radio. The last time it was done, was on May 20th, 2013 by the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Norman, OK to warn people of the extreme severe weather headed toward Moore, OK. An hour later, an EF-5 tornado raked through the town, and he is credited to have saved hundreds of lives.
@@cyanimation1605 ultra funny XD prank so cool: go to giant big strong party with > 200 people atleast. then hijack the bluetooth speaker and play the alert on it. at first ppl probably confused af. like what? then they hear that there is 4 NUCKES STRIKING IN 15 MINUTES. They panic in the giant crowded party and the entire party goes insane. not only are "4 nukes striking in 15 minutes" but now im stuck in a panicing crowd. people fight to get out and in the process many people die or are injured. then turn off the alert early and say: "its just a prank bro" and im sure everyone will forgive
Imagine surviving a nuclear blast, not knowing about the seed vault, and then generations upon generations later, one of your children or children's children stumble upon this seed vault with every seed in existence in it. That amount of happiness is what I live for.
I cried a bit when I heard "Ancient man used to look to the constellations and see their heroes, and now modern man looks to the stars as well, but instead their heroes are made of flesh and blood." That was easily one of the best sentences in a speech I've ever heard.
Sister Hecate Especially when you remember that almost every country has the power to destroy us, but most are holding back. One mistake, and our country is history.
@Spinach and Scenery Listen brethren, I can't watch Michael in Netflix on pornhub. My standards are not *that* low. Besides, the video quality there is terrible.
6:12 the fact this future could exist for us is so unsettling and inconceivable that the mere thought of it is terrifying. the thought that at any moment, you could lose the chance to see anyone you love never take a moment where you exist in peace for granted; you never know what could happen
I learned that the hard way. A few months ago, I was really interested in his video on creepy things. I tried to close my eyes to sleep, but the smile.jpeg kept on coming up in my head. Like as soon as my vision went black, the image appeared. About five minutes later, I went to the bathroom and used my phone's torch so that I could see my way down the stairs, but I was trying to keep from waking my mom, as she is a pretty light sleeper. For ten to fifteen minutes straight, I could hear the sound of the singing androids in my head and it scared the hell out of me. Also, for some reason, I kept on turning my phone's torch function on and off relatively frequently with only a few seconds in between switching and the sudden appearing and then sudden lack of light scared me, and so did my turning on of the nightlight in the bathroom. I knew nothing and no one else was in the house except for myself, my older brother and my mom, but it still scared the hell out of me. So, yeah. As awesome as his videos are, don't watch them at nighttime, regardless of when you go to bed. It'll set in, trust me.
I literally remember watching this video to the end and yet do not remember seeing the end part about the moon landings. It feels like every time I watch a vsauce video I unlock a new part of it
Sadly, nobody ever remembers the 3rd guy on Apollo 11. Michael Collins. He had to stay in orbit and make the coffee while Niel and Buzz were making history. However, I suppose IF the "worst" happened and Nixon had to deliver his speech, Collins could have returned home alone. What a horrible thing to endure.
11 years later and this video is still fantastic The announcer for cataclysmic threat and the speech about the moon left me with goose bumps This is my second time watching this video, but kids born when this came out will be turning 12 this year…

Imagine being on the Moon and looking at the Earth knowing that tens of thousands of people are dying every day. Imagine knowing that tons of species are found extinct, forever, every day.
Sometimes on the weekend, I get on a youtube playlist and fall asleep while youtube videos keep playing. Last night I learned that not only is it unhealthy, but you can end up waking up to this scaring you on a level you had no idea was possible. I got woken up by the EAS alert and was on my way to wake my family, grab some gear, water, and food from the pantry and load up into the car... When I realized it was fake my adrenaline levels crashed and I just sat down for a while...
@Seamus O, I don't live in a target zone, and I am far from the coasts. I'm more concerned about getting away from heavily populated areas (I live in a town of approx 25,000 people) due to looting, panic, non-radiated hunting/farming grounds, and Martial law.
I bet you're a prepper and you were actually super excited about this finally happening, and you probably felt disappointed when you found out it was fake.
I fell asleep watching a playlist of Vsauce videos and was awakened by the “emergency broadcast”. let me tell you I had about 10 seconds of pure panic until I remembered that I had fallen asleep watching RUclips
This is hands down my favorite video on all of RUclips. And I've seen a lot of kickass videos. Seriously. It's the most simultaneously amusing, hilarious, informative, chilling, emotional and thought-provoking thing I've seen on this site, and I think it's fucking awesome as a result. Thank you, Michael!
i just had probably the most horrific feeling in my life. so i was sleeping for like hours, and its 5:30 am at the moment. so i have a chromecast, and like to fall asleep for background noise so i just put on autoplay of done video and let it just go on. i wake up right at the beeping part, to 'the us is being hit by 4 nuclear missles' and i almost puked and cried on the spot. then michaels face popped up
God rewatching vsauce is crazy. The music gives me chills every time. So weird to think that such a random DONG contribution has become such a impact full thing in my life.
I was in the middle of falling asleep cuz ya know I THOUGHT your videos were soothing to watch while going to sleep and those damn alarms came on and I had a literal panic attack
My throat tightened a bit listening to him reading the "Moon Disaster" speech, thinking of those men still stranded on the moon even though I know, thankfully, it didn't actually happen that way. Is that weird?
I am amazed at the fact that Micheal, in 13 minutes of video, which I watched in its entirety, doesn't mention a single time to subscribe to his channel. He provides the relevant soruces (the carpe diem is outdated by the way) and he is extremely clear in his explanation. This is quality content. This is the best youtuber I found and the only one I eagerly follow. Thanks Micheal for your inspiring content.

“Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace... will stay on the moon to Rest In Peace”
I don’t remember the last time I heard such eloquent, powerful words.
The words were too powerful.
