YouTube Monetization 2024? Why I don't care! 😜 Quitting Youtube?

  • RUclips won't monetize my channel! HA! So in todays video I talk about my journey to hit the golden 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours RUclips monetization threshold only to find Google Adsense found my channel didn't meet their 'programme criteria'. Initially it made me want to quit RUclips.
It was a bit of a blow after 9 months of making weekly videos, but it happened around the exact same time (January 2024) that dozens and dozens of top creative RUclipsrs started quitting RUclips. Which got me thinking about the downsides to monetizing my channel.
In the video I get into a number of reasons why that might not be a bad thing. As well as talking about some amazing photographers who are crushing it in the real world and yet would probably get over looked on social media.

Yay, big up the indies. I was publishing a fantasy fiction fanzine in the 90s which was very niche. I've been dabbling in youtube but am miles off monetisation, aside from which they keep giving me strikes for a) linking to my vintage shop, b) linking to my buymeacoffee. So who knows what's going on with their bots. And yes - it's all been gamified, that's what they use to fuel the addiction and make need to keep on churning out content like good little unpaid employees. So well done for clinging to your integrity in this mad world of cybernonesense.

But you're right - RUclips should be a means to an end not the other way round. It's the reason I've never bothered with setting up a channel. In fact "the algorithm" has led me to your channel when I was searching for knowledge on making photo books (real ones i. e.), so it worked out without taking popularity too much into weight for the results, and I really thank you for sharing your knowledge, which in turn showed me, that applying it still needs time plus aesthetical experience in typography and print space layout. So, what about offering your skills as a service? At least they could not cut your gains on the videos for linking your own site. I really like all of your content so far and look forward for more of it - not just for print topics. Thanks you!

You brought home a very good point! I am a brand new creator to YT, not getting alot if subs thus far, but you know what? I quickly realized at about 10 or so subs that this is no more than a psych game. I had a couple of “viral” clips, but it doesn’t mean much to me at this point. So the viewers’ count is low, so my subs count is slowly climbing, but in the end, what matters is I like what I am doing and not trying to entertain this stupid psych game they play. That’s what matters! It may take me 10 years at the rate I am going, but… so what. 😊

Hello, Ed: Thank you for this video. There are two types of RUclips channels dealing with photography. The first is a RUclipsr who talks about photography - but isn't a working photographer. The second type consists of photographers who have a RUclips channel. Either is perfectly acceptable - unless of course there is some form of deception going on. For example, the RUclipsr who pretends to be a working photographer.

I just recently got into photography and was always confused when i found videos with titles like „why you don‘t need to be popular on social media to be a good photographer“..
I didn‘t think that people that do photography would actually care so much about social media and genuinely think that it has anything to do with being a good photographer..
I wonder why it is that people actually seem to think that way.
If money is the reason you do youtube, and you want to do it as your profession, there are a number of resources about what to do and why. You would beed to adjust your content to be exactly that, youtube content. With all the things that every popular youtube channel does, because it‘s proven to work and engage a large audience. There is very little originality, and your audience probably ends up being 12 year old kinds with ipads.. Because they provide the numbers and are easily manipulated through the youtube algorithms.
So in that sense, as a creative and professional, aiming for high numbers is probably the exact opposite you will want to do for your professional work, and i understand why professionals may not be impressed at all by „youtubers“ with millions of subscribers..

This is really fascinating. I've been a commercial and corporate filmmaker for the past 15 years. Went straight into commercial work right after completing an MA in documentary photography at LCC. By my own admission I've done pretty well. But for various different reasons, I'm now going back into documentary filmmaking and considering RUclips as a primary channel to publish my work on. Already I'm beginning to think about and feel the pressure of keeping the algorithms happy. So in addition to producing a 5 to 10 minute film, I'm also considering how I can utilise shorts to shovel more 'content' onto the platform.

Yes, very true, I was monetised before 1000 subs rule and lost it when they rolled in that rule. I had the most subs grow when I had 2 years break with no single video posted and my views was still maintained on decent level with absolutely no effort 😆 making videos for algorithm is like doing something you don't want to do and your viewers don't wanna watch - most things I try to watch is 30% of something usefull or entertaining and the rest of video is just algorithm criteria that I skip and what funny things is they push me to make over 12 min content that most viewers watch 2-5 min average 😁

Dude. Thank you! What an amazing, inspiring, eye-opening, awakening video! Yes I was a teenager in the 90ies as well. I got lost in yt game a few times, but I was always trying to keep one thing in mind - I AM A CHEF NOT A RUclipsR. YT should support my real life work, I shouldn't waste real life to live on yt. 191 subscribers - that's why my channel is cool. Thank you! :-)

@@PicturesOnMyMind haha I knew there will be someone, who won't resist the temptation to check this "loser channel" ;-P sounds like a great new strategy :-D "cmon guys. this channel is so lame. don't go there" :-D I feel like I'm in a band from seattle in the 90ies ;-)
