Recently I was approached by Cherub Technology and asked to review the NUX NGS-6 amplifier simulator pedal. I accepted because their comments included 'good or bad - put it in the review'. So the pedal arrived - and that is interesting because the UA Dream 65 and the Ruby 63 amp sim pedals were fresh in my mind and I was excited to take a look. I was also surprised when researching other brands that the Strymon Iridium only really had THREE amp simulations (it seems) and both the UA and Strymon offerings cost approximately double the price of this NGS-6 amp simulator pedal. So is the NUX NGS-6 Verdugo pedal from the Amp Academy series for guitar a winner? and is it simply better value than the UA and/or Strymon products?
I looked inside this unit and the quality was frankly pretty much as good as it gets and I was reminded about the UA pedals that I recently reviewed which was also incredibly good. Quality is a critical component when you want longevity and a robust design and this pedal has buckets of that!
Don't look for other reviews like this one as I show this pedal - there are none and likely never will be... and make no mistake if I found something that is in any way detrimental then its in this review for potential customers to see - I used a 'no holds barred' approach and I always teel it as I find it.
My concerns of course, after looking closely at the pedal physically, related to the amp simulations and tones themselves and just how easy or complex this NUX NGS-6 amp sim really would be to use in real life situations like at a gig for example. I used the pedal in the studio myself and directly in to the desk and we had no problems at all in doing so.
In the audio examples section of the review we played a sample of the 6 main amps (set by default - but you can change them for others) and while I did use the software editor to change a few positions those sounds were right out of the unit and only changes were things like the drive, master, the bass, mid and treble and that sort of thing so it was really being used like a 'real' tube amp. So check that section out and the accompanying notes about the gear and more...
So while this was a gifted pedal I show it all in all its glory and good and bad is included without ANY input from the maker. That is so important to my reviews that had there been 'strings attached' then this review would not exist.
I have spent considerable time (near enough a week!) creating this video and this video is not sponsored other than the donated pedal. My views remain entirely my views and I was not given ANY context to write the review. This is so different from a typical youtube review and so much closer to what I would actually like to see. Bravo Tony!
:) I have always tried to show the things that most 'reviewers' don't. While this is a self financed video or sponsored I always tell the truth about any product I buy or review. You will always find stuff in my reviews that are never shown in others because that's intentional. Many will NEVER show you this sort of review so I'm glad that you have gained a little from this review - and do bear in mind that over Christmas I'll be reviewing the Eventide H90 in the same way!. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic review.
I don't write comments very often but I wanted to let you know that your work is appreciated. Thanks for the time and ammount of dwtail put into your review. Greetings from Chile!
Thank you for those kind words - and they are not lost here... and thanks for watching. Always appreciated.
I love to see te electronics and computing units! This kind of technology is every day more available and is very nice to see what chips big companies are using!
Couldn't agree more! and thanks for watching.
I absolutely love this pedal ! It is solid and so much fun. Sounds excellent through various amps, or a p.a. it absolutely rocks ! Well worth the money. Also if you click on that snare drum symbol, you get a looper with drum samples for practice as well. Truly nice touch 😊
I and my firend Alan Bruce also agree with you, it really is a very good pedal and for the price is a real bargain. Thanks for watching.
Such a great amount of detail! Thanks for this!
Glad it was helpful! and thanks for watching.
Best review of this pedal! Planning to buy one, lucky to see this review. Subscribed mate!
Welcome aboard! and thanks for the sub and for watching...
I'm back after years ago when you did that Marshall factory tour. Thanks mate!
Welcome back! and great to hear you :) Thanks for watching.
I just stumbled upon this review and bravo for this very in depth info. This is what us ole fellas need. Get into the weeds on these things! Thanks brother, much appreciated! Subscribed and liked.
Thanks for the sub and for watching... appreciated. This is a pretty cool pedal.
Great review and guitar playing by you and your buddy and great pedal .
Definitely worth the money.
Yes it certainly does give many of these types of units a real run for the money and you get change too! It's really well made too which is something I always take in to account. Thanks for watching...
EPIC PLAYING AND TONES!!! YOU GOT A NEW SUB!
Thanks for the sub! but most of all for watching.
Thanks for the review Tony! I'd never heard of this, but watched your reviews for the UAFX pedals. I had the Dream 65 saved for future purchase, but for me, this seems like a much more versatile tool. I'm a gigging musician looking to downsize as much as I can, and thought this might be good running through a pedalboard power amp into a guitar cabinet on stage. Saves me having to bring out the Kemper (which I can keep for recording) or an amp head. At the price it's definitely worth a purchase.
Exactly. I liked the versatility (I would have loved stereo - but someone said it was with using the loop?) of this pedal and the switches just work easily to change things as I would need them so easily - non complexity will win every time when it comes to using the stuff... Kempers are very good but cost the money even more these days (I have one too) and I can understand the need for a light easy to use sim pedal with 6 usable amps - it seems a no brainer really and I'll certainly look again at NUX in the future. Thanks for watching too.
Great review mate, thanks for the details, just bought one!
Hope you enjoy it!
Hi Tony. Excellent job on this review, great to know they use good components. Greetings from Brazil!
Glad you liked the NUX NGS-6 I thought it really does shine and for that cost it has to be a good deal... Thanks for watching...
Great review Thanks Tony.
Thanks for watching! always appreciated. Good pedal...
Great review Tony 🤘!!
Thanks - and as always thanks for watching.
A good honest review, looks really good for the money, thank you Tony.
Actually it is a very good pedal and I have not seen anything like it for the cost. I have seen loads at 2x or 3x or 4x the cost though... Thanks for watching.
@@tonymckenziecom Yep a great pedal. Bought one and tried it for a few days and realised - I already have a Headrush MX5 for recording and live, I just like my old fashioned messy sounds from pedal board and amp - so I returned it in perfect condition to Amazon so hopefully someone got one even cheaper on a warehouse deal 😎 Lovely to watch your technical breakdown to show the quality of the pedal though, but my GAS has to stop to pay for electricity and gas/petrol these days lol. Two pedals that do pretty much the same thing seems a bit much. I did, however, then hunt down the Electro-Harmonix String9 instead which is great fun and saves me playing keyboards (badly) when recording 😂
Ah but cheaper than Headrush :-) but thanks for the post and your experiences :) Ha the elec and gas I completely agree is killer now... and the petrol here is well... silly loaded up with 45% tax by the government. Crazy. Thanks...
@@tonymckenziecom If I hadn't bought the Headrush already, then I think I would have stuck with the NUX. It's a great value little box of amps :)
Great review Tony
Thanks. This is a very good pedal and guys should look closer at NUX gear - it never fails to deliver really. Thanks for watching too.
Great review. Worth mentioning that it actually has 12 amps, not 6. 6 can be assigned to the pedal at a time, but you can swap them out from within the software :)
Good point! and thanks for including that! and of course thanks for watching - its a great pedal.
18 now. 😁
I bought a NUX Cerberus. Great piece of kit.
Thanks for posting the info... and of course for watching too. Seems pretty good gear and I liked it a lot.
This is a great way to spend an afternoon. Enjoying so far……
Its creating the HD version now... and thanks...
Very helpful! Cheers!
Glad it helped! ans thanks for watching...
Thanks for such and in depth review, I´m looking for the simplicity of having an overdrive, delay and phaser to go with something like this, IMO the editing software, DI and IR part of it just does it for me. Hell you could buy it just as an IR loader and it would be a decent value.
Glad it was helpful! its a great device for sure. Thanks for watching - appreciated.
Fantastic review Tony….you always do quite well. I wish you would have fully opened the tech 21 fly rig, but that is a nerdy complaint from an electronics engineer. The guitarist in me says your reviews check all the boxes, but the engineer is a bit more strict 😂….I will likely buy one of these pedals as it is pretty amazing for $200 USD
Thank you for the interesting in depth review! Did you notice from the editor software that since you updated the firmware the number of amps is doubled to twelve? You can choose an amp for each slot - let's say vintage on the A side - with the editor software. For example you can choose Fender Super Reverb instead of Fender Twin or Marshall Bluesbreaker instead of Mesa Mark 1. Furthermore, many people see it as a shortage that there is only mono output, but if you use Amp Academy as a pedalboard amp like me you can always put your stereo effects pedals after Amp Academy. I run my Amp Academy to stereo frfr-speaker cab and I have my stereo delays and reverbs between Amp Academy and the cab. Also those modulations that needs to be run as stereo like tremolo/pan or stereo chorus should be there between the AA and the cab. All the drives and boosts are obviously in front of the AA. The send/return loop is mono so you can put only those effects in the loop that are mono ie. ring modulator, EQ etc.
Excellent information Sami and sincerely thanks for posting this as it will help many. I don't always look so close after a review as I'm always working on one thing or another! To be honest it can boggle my mind as I see so many different units. So posts like yours I always regard as high value and good viewers so thanks for watching.
So, this has no cab sim, right?
It’s just the amps?
Very good Tony. I'm in a quandary now. I was going to get the Dream but will look into this. These look great for recording. I currently either use an amp miced up or software that doesn't really convince. My concern here is live because the gigs I play are fairly low key affairs and so I'd be at the mercy of the techie and monitoring system. I guess you can also use the amp sims of this in an amp's FX loop, but then you'd still have to lug the amp around:)
Just bought a NUX in fact. A shop here was selling them for €159 euros. I contacted them asking them whether they'd put 159 instead of 195 (not wanting complications later), which is the general price and they replied saying. Yes, it's wrong but if you want to take advantage of the mistake, feel free to do so... So I did.
Great price. Hey when you get it and play a little... do come back and tell me your opinion Robin - that would be great to hear. It certainly is an interesting pedal and at that price wow!. Thanks for watching.
Ha I love the UA Dream 65, but this pedal offers more really for 1/2 price and it was hard to fault. I tried to but little to actually fault. I was very impressed with the NUX brand actually and the guy I spoke with is very helpful. So you bought one... you should be OK with that but do let me know...
Excellent review & teardown, Tony. Some interesting design decisions. Not keen on the foot-switches though. I wonder what sort of lifespan they will have.
Only tell with time ;-) but thanks for watching.
@@tonymckenziecom when it comes to gear reviews, yours is one of my favourite channels. You are knowledgable, unbiased and enthusiastic. Really, the 2 channels I am most likely to take advice from are yourself & Leo Gibson. The rest are basically marketing.
Not too fond of them myself, but for what it's worth, those kind of switches are pretty easy to find and replace if you have the confidence with a soldering iron.
Thanks for the details! Do any of the amps have a tremolo and if yes, you'd need to use the software to adjust the parameters?
Gerald I don't remember if they do, but generally I try and include stuff like that... anyone else know if there's a tremolo? and I'm not where the unit is right now so maybe I'll take a look when I get back and post it... Thanks.
Thank you for your review. One thing I didn't see in the review is how the NGS-6 responds to dynamics from the guitar. Does the pedal react to guitar volume settings, string attack and stacking external boost/overdrive pedals?
Yes it seemed fine to me when I checked this one out. I did not use external boosts in this pedal simply because I really wanted to show the pedal 'and as anyone would buy it so truthfully I cant currently answer it as both ears infected :( but thanks for watching and great question.
Great video. The pedal is missing an ac30. The should combine this pedal with the studio pedal they have to switch tubes and mics.
Thanks for the info! and for watching.
cool video
Thanks Johanmaly glad you liked it... a very good pedal. Thanks for watching.
Do you know what the maximum IR length in terms of milliseconds is that this pedal can work with? Awesomely informative video. Thank you.
A very good question - I honestly can't be sure and would have to look further - but right now am making videos for over the Christmas period.. ask me in January and I'll find out... thanks
@tonymckenziecom it appears that the NuX Amp Academy will work with a maximum of 21ms of IR's. Think that is way too short.
Many thanks Tony!
Especially for the chance to see the inside of the pedal which is often neglected in other similar reviews. Probably not many of us viewers "know what you mean" when it comes to e.g. the quality of I.O. boards but I really appreciate your willingness/effort to give us more both general and specific parameters for judging not only the product in question but also the manufacturer.
In this case, I have received one more positive argument for what you really get for the money.
Why don't you have a direct link to a supplier's product page or similar marketing material in connection with your review? NUX or any supplier should indirectly (to say the least) "thank you" for your objective/competent effort.
Indeed I DO have a link! Visit NUX EFX and see more about the NGS-6 - its worth watching: www.nuxefx.com/ampacademy.html and I think NUX do appreciate the video - they have seen it. Always check the text below the video as I most often put much info in the text and even sometimes stuff not in the video itself. I have always thought that the quality inside does matter - it would be frustrating to buy any product from any company and maybe at 3 months (or just out of warranty!) it stops because it was not made well. Some never care about that (they clearly don't get it) but I always think that is critical... and with some gear costing literally $500+ these days that's IMO important. Thanks for watching Dusan, and I'm glad you gained a bit from the video... the pedal ir really very good and its recommended.
@@tonymckenziecom, thank you for the link but I meant that you should make money from this (through references to selling pages). Shouldn't you have some kind of "agreement" with the manufacturer/suppliers and make money with these thorough and detailed reviews?
@@DusanStanic Heres from the text under the review: "So while this was a gifted pedal I show it all in all its glory and good and bad is included without ANY input from the maker. That is so important to my reviews that had there been 'strings attached' then this review would not exist" and I hope that helps thanks...
@@tonymckenziecom respect and I perceive your reviews just like that. Reviews like yours are needed (for those who listen) to help us avoid impulse shopping but at the same time make sure the manufacturers think a little before releasing new products. Thanks again, Tony.
One thing I'd like NUX to change is the fact that the compressors and drive pedals share the same EFX block, so you cant use both together.
Thanks for posting this comment - I'm sure NUX read some of them... and thanks for watching.
But it does give you an effects loop. So, still doable. 😊
Hey Tony! You should play some chords and riffs on your demos. Only soloing give us a pour evaluation cause a bad gear can sound good in a soft single notes playing.
Noted! I do sometimes do that but not always - but good point and I'll remember that. Thanhks for watching.
Great vid! How does it hold up as an audio interface? Is it useable that way, or better use the jack out, and plug it into an interface?
When I used it I plugged directly in to the desk 1/4 jacks and off we went. That captured through Studio One and it sounded really quite good. I never tried any other way to connect. Sometimes I am limited on time. Even answering posts can take actually more than a day. Thanks for watching.
@@tonymckenziecom Thanks so much for getting back to me. Yeah I totally understand. Keep it fun for yourself man! :)
what a delicious kind of guitar nerd stuff!
:) Thanks for watching...
Hi Mr Tony....the main processor is similar to SHARC Processor of Strymon Iridium? In terms of quality.....thank you very much ....from ITALY
While 'SHARC' is often 'picked up' by many guys, remember there are a whole series of SHARC processors from Analog Devices. Some are slower and less powerful than others and it's one reason why I often show the processor - some makers don't like it to be shown, while others 'claim' its $500 each to justify them for the sometimes over the top pricing of the equipment. I have seen SHARC processors this side of $70 or less. Hope it helps and thanks for watching.
I ve got a Nux NDD6 Duotime dual delay engine which is stereo I can just put the output of this to that and have a stereo out.
Thanks for the post and for watching...
Given that the Nux Amp Academy and the Boss IR-200 are different type of products within the same category, which one of them is better? What is better? Well, ease of use and the sound. I know that sound is often down to personal reference, but does this sound better than the Boss IR-200, meaning more correct, or more similar to the amps it's emulating?
Honestly I think they are ALL different. They BOTH sound good. I just even reviewed the FM3 from FA and the Engl SE was very different to the one I owned for ages. You are right about it all being subjective of course. My advice? check both out and get the one that YOU like. Hey thanks for watching too.
...nice one. The technician I would have liked to meet in real life ... and unfortunately never did so far ...
Thanks... I'm not really a technician, but its not hard to ensure that I show what people are buying - in this case all pretty good stuff and it sounds great too. Thanks for watching...
Hi Mr.Mckenzie.... in term of dynamic? Is Tube like response? Thank you very much......
It's not bad. I don't really find many simulators exactly like a tube amp particularly in the 'feel' when you play. Sure enough, the tones are there in most and this one is no exception - it sounds pretty cool to me. But the exact 'feel' of an amp is hard to describe and my guess is it's hard to simulate too. Thanks for watching.
@@tonymckenziecom Hi Mr Tony....the main processor is similar to SHARC Processor of Strymon Iridium? In terms of quality.....thank you very much ....from ITALY
Tony, I'm sorry to bother you with this, but I would like to ask you something. I have had the Nux amp academy for 1 year now, and lately I'm having a problem. The pedal enters bypass mode at any time. The only way I can fix it is to unplug it from the power supply and plug it back in. But it turns off more and more often. Could it be a problem with the internal circuit? the power supply, perhaps? Thanks
I would firstly look at the power supply... hope it helps... and thannks for watching.
@@tonymckenziecom Thank you so much for the answer. Your channel is the best, by far the most sincere. Cheers from Uruguay (sorry for my english)
I need some help: do you know how to turn off the Amp Academy or do I have to disconnect the power supply?
There is no on off switch. If you want to bypass it there are ways to do that but on and off is literally power out or turn off at the outlet. Thanks
@@tonymckenziecom : you're right. This is one of three minor complaints I have about this pedal: no power switch, no delay effect and the toggle-switch for the scenes sometimes bugs. I don't know if this is a firmware related issue. Thanks back from germany.
You can turn it off and on by pushing both foot switches at the same time.
@@brandonclement5579 : wow - thank you
Hi Tony what usb cable do I need to connect nux amp academy to laptop thanks in advance.
Thats a USB C type - newest style. Thanks...
Would you say the sounds are in par with the boss gx-100. I have g.a.s. like every musician so this seems like a fun way to spend $200.00, but I already have the gx100 so if the amps aren't better I couldn't justify it 😅
It's really hard to say something is 'better or worse' - its subjective, but also important to take in to account the music styles you play because they are generally dependent on what you like in tones... all I can say is that they are good in this unit and I still have it here. Had it been a not so good pedal I would have sold it, but this one is staying :). Thanks. I know I side stepped the answer - but think about what I said and in reality I was very honest.
@@tonymckenziecom 💯😁👍🏽 nicely done I guess when I say better I'm referring to how close they sound and feel to the amps they're trying to emulate. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question, and for your stellar in-depth reviews.
Very interesting, but if you want one you will need to be patient, Thomann are quoting an 8 to 10 weeks delivery time.
This was the same with the NUX-MG30 and they took many months to arrive and sold out within days.
The world chip shortage won't be helping these products, my question is where do they get the chips to make the
review samples that they flood RUclips from?
For now i have all i need, and having the original amps why waste money on another simulator.
Thanks for your review Tony.
Well I have sympathy with NUX on that one. In my own sector I know EXACTLY what the chip shortages in the supply chain can do to products for sale... it's not a NUX issue but further back down the chain as one of my recent videos discussed... and thanks for watching - but its a good point for sure and one that is affecting every single maker out there no matter whether they admit it or not - even Apple is having trouble... the chip thing often is not always that there are no chips... but rather that the supply chain takes a price from say $1 to $10 per chip (or indeed far worse and the product can't be made for the money).
@@tonymckenziecom I now work for a small company that is trying to sell magflow water meters, but they use a lot of chips
that are in short supply and prices going up nearly every day.
The meters are made in southern Ireland, so the shipping and import charges don't help.
We used to get deliveries every week, now it's a few a month.
This worlwide shortage will be with us for a few years more, hopefully i will be retired by then!
Allan I am not really allowed to talk about the company stuff I do, but generally the situation is extremely bad still. You touched on shipping - and one of the most recent 'bills' I have seen was for power supplies from China by SEA... (by air would be silly). Sadly I can tell you that the shipping and clearance cost has now doubled to what it was a while back. That has to be passed on (when the gear even arrives as its short supply too) to customers. Power supplies were typically $7 and a $ or 2 for shipping, but now? Well $10 and $4 seems about right. Of course by the time you add margin and VAT AND have to warrant the devices then it gets very expensive with retails then very high. Everything you mention I have seen exactly the same out there from many companies. Sincerely I hope it improves...
@@tonymckenziecom Customers don't seem to understand that apart from shortages of components, which are increasing every day
the shipping costs have more than doubled in recent months.
The Magflow meters that come from southern Ireland weigh 15kg when packed, then due to brexit you have to add import duty, courier
handling fee then VAT.
Small companies can only pay the going rates, they can't afford to buy in bulk when the prices are low, which i doubt that they ever will be
again in the current climate.
Consumers are in for a shock if all of this continues, the days of buying good TV's or Guitars for under £500 will soon be over.
11 Months later, are you using it? How does it compare against the Tonex as far as sounding like the real Amps?
Yes I still have the NUX NGS-6 pedal and still use it. I thought the NUX unit is simply easier to use and sounded very good. On the Tonex the faffing about with software that is sort of worked or not was not helpful so I sold the Tonex and indeed as I said I still have the NUX. I liked the NUX tones. The Tonex can sound OK too, but overall I thought if you consider everything then the NUX won out because its just easier and works all the time. Hope it helps and thanks for watchiong.
@@tonymckenziecom really appreciate your answer, as a gigging musician I cant be fussed with messing about with such things either, (even although technology is my day job), also looking at the Nux MG-400 which seems to offer much in the way of Amp simulation, but added effects, how would you compare on the Amp simulation, that is primarily what I am looking for, effects are a bonus, my rig is pretty simple, I either use a Katana 100 or a Marshall Combo, so box of tricks would just go into power amp.
Hi Tony are you alright I’ve just watched the video very good really impressive I can’t I can’t type a bit too much but I just thought I’d let you know how things are going okay all the best Tony
Hey Allan, I trust you're doing OK there and all the best for a quick and positive recovery. Thanks for watching... I don't call because I don't want to be intrusive, but rest assured we're thinking about you. Warmest regards....
Why does he need a click when there's music and a drumtrack as well?
Is he a drummer normally?
Who knows...
This pedal takes a lot of work to make it sound good. Also it works better with outside IRs, the onboard ones are meh.
The DI out is really hot so you have to make adjustments to it.
At the end of the day, the feel of it was a little dead-ish, I'll be honest. So, I returned it and got a UA Ruby and OMG that sounds amazing in comparison.
I really wanted to like this Amp Academy because of the features. It wasn't good enough for me to want to use it live as a DI solution.
Good points. I also reviewed the UA Ruby - so check that out too here: ruclips.net/video/M6yLmiXc_mM/видео.html The Ruby and 65 Reverb offer great tones - but remember that they really offer just one amp compared to the NUX NGS-6 so its a bit of what fits someone really I think. Thanks for the post and for watching.
How much ?
In the video... about £175 UK and about $199 USA thanks
@@tonymckenziecom thank you Tony. Is it sold now in Europe. Cheers
I'm really interested in this unit, but their midi documentation is non existent beyond what end users have been putting up on youtube and the like.
I have today asked Cherub for info re the MIDI commands - if they provide them, I'll post them. Thanks.
No, no no, leave my bank account alone😭
Ha I know how you feel :) I recently bought a Floyd Rose FRX whammy (review soon) and that cost nearly twice the price of this pedal... ouch that really made this pedal feel like a brilliant bargain.. which it is. Thanks for watching.
Whats taking these companies so long to make an reactive load/attenuator box? Lol. Like a two notes or suhr
Who knows... but of course with this pedal you would not really need one of those... maybe the numbers that could be sold are far less than this type of product so it might make more commercial sense? Thanks for watching...
Not stereo.... The big mistake.
Would have been brilliant.
