NUX Cerberus and Amp Academy. An interesting pairing for direct dones.

So I finally managed to pair the NUX Cerberus with the NUX Amp Academy. Something I've wanted to do since the Amp Academy came out. Tonally I wasn't disappointed. The two combine really well. The FX loop on the both units allows me to run the signal path exactly as I would want to with a real amp rig. Which is something I'm a little bit more obsessive about that I think I need to be!!
Again the lack of MIDI (yes I know it has MIDI via USB) really hampers the unit in this situation. I set up 4 presets for covers gigs on the Cerberus a while ago and if I could change amp scene when I change preset it would be really helpful. As it is I've to change both each time which is fine but a bit fiddly.

Really good demonstration of this setup. Gotta say the nux amp academy has blown me away how good it sounds. I think the key with it is just be happy with two or 3 sounds and go with it.
I’ve tried direct with so many multi effects and ir pedal but this is up there for best sound
Hey. Thx for commenting. So I agree that it sounds excellent. Particularly immediately out of the box too. Very inspirational as a tool straight out of the box. Kinda makes the little functionality issues all that much more annoying though.
I do the same thing with Nux Cerberus and Boss IR-2, thanks to the effects loop. Very interesting, and very good sound. No midi
Hey thx for the comment. Yeah the effects loop is a must have now a multi effects in my opinion. When you say no midi are you saying you think that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
Midi is not a problem for me, because I don't use it, but it can be for other mucicians.
The IR-2 has a stereo effects loop. The Nux Amp Academy is mono only. This is why I choose the IR-2
M-Wave MS1 midi host is $15US, the M-Wave Chocolate midi controller is $25US, set up the connections with the M-Wave phone app.
Optical compressor pedal in the NAA fx loop will give you a really nice tube sag sound, I use the Mooer Yellow, a Diamond copy, works great for this.
Just to be clear. I have absolutely NO problem with the sound of the amp academy. It’s sounds absolutely great. It just doesn’t really work for a live application.

I think its better to show the connection between cerberus and the amp academy. I didnt understand the connections. But its the best video about the amp academy and cerberus. thnks :)
without dual switch I think we cant use booth pedals amp aademy and cerberus

Yes 👏🏽 cool but ı mean maybe its better the show the back of the cable inputs and outputs. I tried to connect my cerberus to amp academy with the jazz chorus amplifier. But the effects are not working unfortunately. I thing I have to buy a dual switch?
Hey OK. I can help here. Firstly you he dual switch has nothing to do with signal routing. It’s simply allows you to independently switch on moderation and reverb. So you don’t need it. Are you trying to use the amp academy to change the sound of your jazz chorus or do you want to hear the sound of the amp academy?
I’m going to assume it’s the latter: here’s what you do.
1. Guitar into Cerberus input
2. Cerberus drive output to amp academy input
3. Cerberus modulation / delay and reverb input to amps academy fix send
4. Cerberus output 1 to jazz chorus input (if you want to hear the sound of the jazz chorus amp) or Jazz chorus effects return (if you only want to hear the sound of the amp academy)
Because you are playing the amp academy through a guitar amp with a guitar speaker. You should not have any speaker simulation on. So make sure the cab button turned off on the Cerberus.

Nice one Rob. I ended up getting an Amp Academy just for quick plug in play practice or experimentation with my other pedals. Due to NUX's typically bad documentation it took me awhile to get up and going (and editing). I don't ever use high gain amps so I'm confined to the amps on the "clean" side. One thing I like is that they have a model of the Mesa Boogie MK I which is a model that none of the "big boys" offer oddly.
Also have you checked out the new Boss ME-90 its has amp sims/FX and goes for the same price as the Cerberus?
Hey Frank. Thx again for the comment. So I actually sold the Cerberus 2 weeks ago. While it’s fantastic I just do t need it at the minute and I needed more stuff to review. I needed to build a board for flying to Germany that fits on a pedaltrain metro 16. Which is finished now and is actually based around the digitech RP360. Which is surprisingly good.
I have started watching the ME90 videos online but again without being able to name presets it’s not that much use to me.
Looking for an amp/cab pedal as an intermediary from my pedalboard to my audio interface. Was originally looking at the Joyo American Sound and British, new found out about the Nux Amp Academy. However, with this issues it has, the Amp Academy is out (definitely looking for ease of use). But now the Boss IR-2 is out. Wondering what your thought maybe between the Joyo and the Boss IR-2? Wasn't sure if the Joyo was still worth it in 2023, or if the Boss is worth it for the sounds. Great channel, sub'd.
Hey. Thx for the Sub. Appreciate it. So there’s a few things here. If I wanted an amp substitute before my DAW, and I didn’t want to switch amps in a hurry or live I’d be totally happy with the amp academy. However the its really hard to argue against the Joyo American sound. Like it’s €30 and it sounds absolutely great. I personally think you need a cab sim with it but a lot of people don’t.
I actually use the IR200 as my main direct amp sim. It’s fantastic x but I need the presets, MIDI, effects loop and switches for live use. I’m f you are putting one amp sim after your board I think it or indeed the IR2 would be overkill.
I’d say jet the Joyo, try it, if you do t like it get the Amp academy or IR2. I have demos of the amp academy, IR200 and American sound if you want to check them out.

Hey Rob, what do you think of the upcoming NuX Trident? Looks good. Do you think it offers enough for you consider upgrading from the Cerberus?
Hey Padawan. So I’m not really very interested in the trident. But that’s purely down to the way I like to use my gear. I don’t like all inclusive multi effects from a use ability POV. I like to have my drive and amp sim separate to my multieffects.
As multieffects go the trident looks grand but the only thing I’d say is it doesn’t have the analog drive section that the Cerberus has which I think is a shortcoming.
@TheGuitarEffect ya, I'd have preferred if the drives were analog. Also, the boost (od/dist) section is the only one that doesn't have the external knobs. I'd definitely have preferred for hard external controls for the boost circuit instead of say a modulation as you're more likely to adjust that.
Still sn interesting looking bit of gear and from the vids so far I'd say it sounds better than the new boss ME-80. Thanks
NUX Trident is probably the solution
Hey Michael. Thx for the comment. To b honest I wouldn’t use the trident for the same reason I wouldn’t use a helix or a quad Cortex. I like analog drive pedals (which the Cerberus has but the trident doesn’t) and I actually prefer my amp sims in a different unit to my effects.
@@TheGuitarEffect Yep, I understand. I am using a Cerberus with my Fender Supersonic amplifier and I love the analog drive pedals and the analog boost, but going ampless I would choose something like an Orange Terror Stamp which is still a hybrid valve amp in a box on the pedal board because I do like the sound of valves rather then choices of amp sims like you do prefer analog drive pedals over sims. We are living in a time of great options as guitarists. Thank you for your great and inspiring videos.
Hey Michael. Thx for the reply. You should check out the video I have on the KOCH 63OD tube preamp. A three channel tube preamp with two FX Loops and emulated XLR out and remote switching.
Analog boost and drives… can you even hear a difference between them and the FX version when the patch is tweaked to match?
Heck, even the response is so close these days that I honestly can’t tell the difference.
What I mean is, the TS in the old BOSS GT100 could be set to sound exactly like any TS pedal I compared it to, included Maxons original 808.
The only analog pedals I kept are DIY fuzzes and an LPB-1, only because there is no replication of them.
What I heard from the Trident so far seems solid enough for me to only add the pedals I need that it doesn’t replicate.
Seems like the NUX Trident has it all and more?
Hey Joe. Thx for the comment t. It looks great alright. All in one solutions don’t really work for what I like to do. I prefer a multi effect unit with standalone drives and amp modeling.

I had one of these, it has a lot of boost/drive/amp models and even some fuzz pedals with it’s latest firmware, could even capture a complete stack of gain stages + preamp and add prefered poweramp/ tubes with bias and IR to it.
Then connect it’s midi to my ES-5 and midi controllable delay/reverb.
The only downside was the volume difference between DI and amp out.
To avoid clipping with a channel strips gain at zero, I had to go a lot down on the units preamp volume, so much that I had to add a transparent boost between amp out and the clean amp sitting on my stack, it misses the IR volume slider that the Nux AA has.
If you only plan to use DI out or Amp out, one at a time, it’s a good solution as a boost/fuzz/drive+preamp+(poweramp and IR) on a pedal board.
The boost/drive/fuzz section is very versatile too, since eveything there has a 3 band eq.
And if you use noise gate for high gain it has two, one pre and one post.
Besides that I found the capture feature to be very accurate, just keep in mind that the gain knob doesn’t react in the same way, which means you have to set the exact sound (on the amp and drive pedals, if you plan to capture some in front of the amp with it) to the sound that you plan to use.
I ended up selling it only because of the DI/Amp out volume difference and because I don’t need a lot of preamp choices but I need DI out for reliable front of house/recording and enough volume to get air and feedback from my poweramp and cabs at the same time.
Actually downsized from an XL pedal board to a few pedals in a rack together with a poweramp and a wireless system, only switching a dual modulation pedal on and off for one song, solo volume gets boosted the old school way via my guitars volume knob, which is all the way down around 3 for relative high gain rythm crunch and 10 for solos.
Bit odd to have to go that far down, but probably relates to the choices I made for pickup, volume knob resistance, boost, drive and preamp model.
Hey Joe. Yep I had the Preamp live. Liked it but too physically large for what I wanted it for.
So here’s the thing for me with on board boosts, fuzzes, distortions etc within multi effect units. I play guitar and sing with an original alternative rock band. So I have to get a lot of varied sounds from song to song and I have to use presets and advanced switching so I can focus on singing. All of which is fine with an all in one multi effects unit however I also play with a lot of house amps. So if I turn up to a gig and the drive level on a pedal is too low for example I’d have to change it on 13 presets (1 per song) which isn’t doable before we play so if I put a drive pedal in the loop of the multi effect unit I can tweak it once and bring it in and out whenever I need it. Make sense?
Same thing applies with amp simulation.

Are you not setting your board up to have unison volume and a bump for solos, so that it doesn’t matter what you plug it into as long as an amp as example is clean or on the edge of breakup?
For a volume boost when needed, if larger multi fx, I either create a preset in a songs bank or asign one of it’s pedals for just that, or for smaller multi fx with more pedals I add a clean boost with adjustable EQ post everything, since some modulation and delay pedals can be pretty sensitive to input level.
If I ever need something to cover more bases in the future I would most probably go for a Headrush Prime, covers a lot of ground while still sounding descent and can be set to be as simple as it can be complex, plus that is also allows propper DI with IR, kinda like that to be consistent.
Within songs I also prefer as little stomping pedals as possible so that I can focus on interaction and vocals.
Currently I only play lead in a cover band that plays Kiss songs, so that doesn’t require a lot of different guitar sounds.
Hey Joe. Yeah you see I think the thing here is I am the sole guitar player and singer in an original alternative rock band so I have to make it as sonically interesting as possible so I use a lot of effects and a lot of switching and that governs the rig more than anything else.
Short answer yes unison volume and boost for solos. (We play 13 songs live and there are 3 solos) they’re not a big part of what we do. It’s more about signature melody pieces popping out for effect.
