I think choosing the firmest mattress ever the best of both worlds. Sleeping on thr floor is an extreme example.

    Guys trust me,
sleeping on the floor is insanely nice once your used to it and it only actually takes about 3 days to get used to it.
One thing that I like about it is the pressure and it is like a nice massage. The only problem is that my mum doesn’t like it when I sleep on the floor some reason, so mostly I have to sleep on my bed and lots of nights I end up laying on the floor and I’ve obviously went onto the floor while half asleep because it feels much better 😂😂

I've slept on the floor for the around 8 years and I have found it to be very helpful. Here are some of my observations:
Your hip flexors really matter. The pulling on the spine from the hip flexors causes a ton of discomfort for new floor sleepers. It certainly did for me. I recommend doing a knees-over-toes style split squat and getting a gentle 45 second stretch twice on each side.
Your temperature is FAR better regulated by floor sleeping. I grew up in the south, where 100f degree days in the summer are the norm. Sleeping on the floor allows your heat to be CONDUCTED out of your body much more efficiently than convected out by the air. Body temperature regulation is one of the greatest benefits to sleeping on the floor in my opinion - you really cant fall asleep until your body temperature has fallen a bit, and the floor is a very very good way to do that. Additionally, you don't have to keep your bedroom at 62f (insane for a number of reasons when the night time temps don't really fall below 90f). You also get the added benefit of reducing water loss from the air when you inevitably kick off the covers which helps keep you more hydrated. The fact that some companies are starting to create water cooled beds (beds that remove heat with conduction instead of convection) is the source of some amusement to me - I get that benefit for free!
Drinking a volume of water (not even cold) will also help with this - bed or floor. If I wake up in the middle of the night and have that claustrophobic too-hot feeling I get about 7 or 8 good sips and I am back to bed very quickly. Running your hands under cool water is also very helpful for this too.
Another benefit to floor sleeping is that you can use your foam roller right as your going to bed. I always have a lacrosse ball and a roller near me when I sleep. For years and years I would do it every day (school has kicked me off the habit). Some nights I would fall asleep on my lacrosse ball because I was able to get so relaxed. Trying to roll out in a bed it can be rather tough.
Some cross body tapping reviewing my day really helps me fall asleep as well (the technique is a modified EMDR technique in case your interested).
I have slept on the floor so long that I when I return to the bed I legitimately sleep worse. I wake up and notice that I am just not as loose as when I sleep on the supportive floor. Especially on older beds in hotels.
Speaking of mattresses, you don't ever have to replace a mattress ever again, and nor is there a steady decline in sleep quality until you decide to spend a heinous amount on a new mattress! I sleep in a an old REI sleeping bag I've had for as long as I've been sleeping on the floor. It provides just enough cushion while also being insulative enough to just work. Additionally, you'll never loose your blankets in a sleeping bag - for some people it wont work, but for me it is awesome! The first few nights I slept in a sleeping bag on the floor I woke up with that magic under-the-covers-at-the-perfect-temperature feeling every night. I recommend standing up and stepping into the bag instead of trying to shimmy it over your body laying down.
If you do camp, sleeping on the floor is a great way to get a good nights sleep when you go to the back country for a weekend. Solving that problem is what originally pushed me to sleep on the floor in the first place.
I think its worth experimenting with all these factors if you decide to give this a go. The small women with a large hip to waist ratio that I've mentioned sleeping on the floor to (my partner) have not been very keen on it. So it almost certainly will not work 100% for everyone in all situations, but I think there is a lot to be learned from at least trying it for something beyond a week.
Lastly, the thing that truly changed my sleep forever was using mouth tape (as recommended in James Nestor's book Breath). enforced nasal breathing is truly a life saver and made my sleep around 1 order of magnitude (legitimately 10x) better.
    Thanks!

I’ve been sleeping on a shikibuton (Japanese floor bed) for about 4 months. My mobility has improved greatly and most of my morning aches and pains have gone away. I used to not be able to get up off the floor or do a single squat, now I get up and down with ease and regularly squat to do daily tasks. I also sleep through the night now. I keep it folded up during the day and when it’s bedtime, I lay it out and put my pillows down and I’m able to fall asleep and stay asleep really easily. Seriously one of the best decisions I’ve made.

I’m glad this helped you. I did this for about 3 weeks while camping (I’m guessing a sleeping bag on a tent floor counts?) and I actually had the opposite experience. I somehow broke my sleeping bag by the end of the trip, probably from fidgeting because I just can’t be still. I’ve tried so many different things to stop fidgeting during the day (none of it’s worked) but at night I can’t really stop myself from fidgeting when I’m fully asleep. And I can’t seem to get to sleep without wiggling my body lol it’s odd. And on the floor fidgeting is even more uncomfortable but my body just won’t stop it feels almost like involuntary. And it’s not like I’m not getting enough exercise or anything, I’ve improved my diet a lot since a year or so ago and I’ve always loved cycling and I do stuff like lifting weights etc. Anyway sorry for the ramble comment I just thought I’d share my experience cos it feels like everyone else here has had a positive experience with it so I feel kinda like what’s wrong with me haha

I’ve always told people that I prefer sleeping on the carpeted floor. I think it has to do with the “support” and how it keeps my shoulders from caving in/forward.
A forward shoulder is usually associated with tenseness or anxiety. It’s sort of like the idea of “fake it till you make it”, where good posture can make you feel better.
In addition, ATP (body’s energy molecule) can be switched to an “alert” molecule when the body is stressed. That can cause fatigue since ATP is no longer usable for energy in that state. This is also the reason for long-Covid fatigue.

Actually, the real key to sleeping on the floor is to actually sleep on the ground, I'm talking about the floor of the earth, it works better if your house is actually on the ground. It works wonders. If your house is lifted off of the ground. It will not work like the way it does if you sleep on the ground, for example, go on a picnic and lay the blanket on the grass or lay the blanket on a corn field with bare dirt. And take a nap. This will ground you to the earth and charge your body. From what I hear. It really does not work at the beach on sand. It works more when you're on dirt. Even if you walk on dirt bare foot in the cornfield it helps your body to get charged from the earth... It keeps you grounded.

I slept on the floor for several months many years ago. Several years prior to that I had a serious back injury and was in quite a bit of pain and sleeping was always difficult. I tried sleeping on the floor and it made a massive difference. My arms would always go to sleep since I'm a side sleeper, but my back had significantly less pain and I'm sure it helped greatly in the healing process.
I plan on heading back to the floor. I may need just a little extra padding since I am in a basement.

I slept on the floor on and off for a year when my kiddos were super young and my husband was deployed …we called it camping out … my daughter was 1 and my son was 8 and the 3 of us would camp out on the weekends and a couple nights a week! We had soft thick blankets and piles of pillows and I don’t remember ever feeling sore or achy! It was some of the best sleep ever! Now I’m old, my kids are grown and my bed feels like crap! I might have to start camping out again! It might help w the aches and pains! Good luck w your floor journey!

I’ve been sleeping on the floor for 15-20 years now. I’ve lost count 🤣. I love it. It really freaks people out though and I was self conscious about it for a long time until I worked in Korea and Japan and found it wasn’t very strange thing there. I have more space in my apartment since I just roll up a yoga mat or fold up my Japanese grass mat and put it away. I started when I would stretch or do yoga and I’d just grab a quilt and sleep stretched out on the floor. My sleep was so much better and I don’t wake up with tight shoulders or neck, my back feels good. I agree it may not be for everyone, but it is definitely worth trying out to see if it could help with ailments or energy or whatever. Plus, it is easy to clean a yoga mat or air out a grass mat on the porch. It feels cleaner than a mattress.

The Platform bed was 2 1/2 feet in height, standard full size, made of all wood, and the platform top was of thick plywood over wooden slats.

Ok edit, I tried it for 5 days and loved it so much that I decided to buy a futon matrass so I can lie down next to my husband. I would prefer the floor, but I also don't want to sleep seperated. It takes a few days to adjust to the floor but pretty soon I could feel the nice effects. More support, deep sleep and a kind of massaged sensation in the morning. I assume that heavy feeling will get less as I adapt to it more and more. I'm 42yrs old and no back problems, side sleeper. Thanks so much for making the video, it convinced me to try it!

one thing i learned to consider is, when you get into bed and hold a comfortable position to go to sleep, the moment you sleep and your body relaxes the weight of your body pushes down into the bed, while your unconscious, it spreads your limbs out and puts pressure on your shoulder joints and hip joints, that comfortable head pillow is just now twisting your neck under no tension versus weight, that's why people wake with dead arms, painful shoulders and neck ache. just my opinion and experience.

I have lyme disease, i have lots of stress held in my mind from it. Sometimes when i spend too long looking at screens or with headphones in, or even just from having coffee, i get a bit detached from reality because all of this mental stress builds up so quickly.
I remember a week or two after starting treatment i could literally only sleep if i slept on the floor. It is incredibly grounding for my stressed mind. The softness of the bed keeps me trapped in my mind somehow. I can't believe i haven't tried this in months.
I sleep much better now. But in general i have no resiliency during the day. I wake up exhausted. I think i might be able to further reset my nervous system doing this. Ground the body in the physical.
Wish me luck! My life is a mess, hope this helps again :D thanks for the video

You should also do a 7 day barefoot/minimalist shoe challenge.
I started sleeping on the floor because I learned about and bought barefoot shoes with zero arch support and a wide toe box (strengthens your feet)
Barefoot shoes made me think about how the shoes i used to wear were really cushiony and so was my bed, so i started sleeping on the floor with some blankets just to see if my body would feel as good as my feet and a few weeks later I completely moved my bed out of my room and have been floor sleeping ever since.
tangent over, wish you all the best.

When I was in high school, I slept on an old military cot without a mattress. I placed a blanket over the metal fence like metal the mattress would have sat on. It sucked! Nevertheless, it resulted in my becoming even more mentally tough/gritty. Grit served me well over the years. I had a different perspective on what tough things are. I learned I was much tougher than I thought I was. Served me well when I shipped off the Quantico, to attend Officer Candidates School. Served me well when work got tough in garrison or when deployed. I was always much more mentally tough than my peers. Coupled with being physically fit and a desire to continuously learn new skills, resulted in a very successful 22 year career in the Marine Corps. Then a great job at Amazon HQ1 and now as a C-Suite executive. Reframe your suffering and use it to fuel your life 😊

It works because its a physical grounding tool for the mind. Youre interacting with a huge hard surface rather than getting lost in your mind. Its 8 hours straight of grounding. On a soft bed you kind of just forget your body exists

YES Exactly! This is why I switched to the "floor". My mattress was getting softer after only 2 years, it felt like I was being swallowed up by it. I was also experiencing a floating away feeling because the mattress was a lot higher now, because of a new bed base. Now I just sleep on a board on the bed slats. So happy to be free of that massive mattress thing - what a burden.

I was watching this video in bed at midnight and i thought why not give it a go for 7 days like everyone else. So I set up 2 thin soft blankets on my carpet floor and I had 2 pillows by my side to keep me on my back and a thin pillow under my head. I've haven't ever been able to sleep on my back I've always had to sleep on my stomach or sides but on the floor it was reasonably comfortable. It probably took less than 15 minutes for me to get to sleep which is really good for me (usually takes a while). I woke up after 7 hours of a really good sleep, no waking up through the night or anything. Although there wasn't any huge changes I did feel a little more awake, productive and my spine felt quiet nice and soft. Ofcourse no major changes but things I would like to see are lower back pain going away. And Being more productive especially in the morning. Thanks guys and I'll keep updating every day. (Also I've been wanting to do this for a while but to keep me focused on my goals I am doing a pushup for every like this comment gets. Within reason😂).
    Day 2,
I didn't see to many changes last night besides feeling more awake and productive, and just feeling like I had a deep sleep. I do feel like feeling more productive could be because I'm being disciplined with myself, I want to go sleep on my bed (even tho it's old and hard it's what I'm used to and comfortable with.) But instead I'm going to the floor so I'm waking up knowing I took control of my mind and that makes me feel good.
    Day 3
Just woke up and went straight on my phone for an hour, didnt see any more changes today but ill keep doing it and keep updating.
Day 4. I'm not really seeing anymore benefits anymore. But my mattress is the same one my mum had when she was a kid. It's old stiff almost the same as the floor. So that's why I think it's not an amazing difference. But if u have a comfy nice mattress I would defo recommend this.
    Day 5.
Not seeing any differences anymore. Kinda looking foward to this challenge being done. But my experience isnt your experience. Might not work well for me but might for you.
Day 6. Once again no changes to report.
Day 7. Officially done this challenge, however it has actually made a routine for staying disciplined. Now before bed I make my bed, make a hot tea, do 10 ish minutes of stretching, drink my tea, then lights off. And I do feel better/ well rested after sleeping on the floor. So I have no intention on going back to my bed, except for comparing how I sleep on my bed vs the floor. Thanks guys and sorry that this comment is so long, after all it did take 7 days to wright😂.

I grew up sleeping on the floor - voluntarily - because i grew up in the Southeast (US) when few of us had AC ... so during the summer, it was common for myself and my siblings to sleep in the living room, all six of, near a whole-house window-fan which kept us cool; also, we enjoyed the camaraderie of it (cutting up and talking); well, now when i go camping, i try to sleep on the floor for a few nights before i sleep in the tent at the campsite, just to get accustomed to it again; and it stretches different muscles / tendons / joints - and you do feel stronger after you do this for a few nights, it really works.

did that also couple of times allready
just a hard mat on the floor on my carpet und a shallow pillow
I found, that my body goes into sleep mode way faster when sleeping on the floor. Also I'm way more still and in the morning I'm awake immediately.
But after about two weeks my back began to hurt so I switched to my bad again.
Now from time to time I just sleep on the floor for a couple of days until my body tells me to change to the bad again. The positive aspects have remained also on the bad.
In my free time I like to go camping and now also my sleep outside has increesed in quality, so that was cool to observe.

Jak, I enjoyed your video immensely, and relate to everything you've experienced. Although I'm a woman 'of a certain age', ;) I decided 9 months ago to hit the floor (after watching several videos on the topic). I first 'tested' the situation for 3 weeks on a thin, narrow beach-lounge chair mattress, and then ordered a proper tatami mat and a thin Japanese futon (shikibuton). (The day before they were to arrive, I gave away my bed and high-quality mattress.) The floor-sleeping experience continues to be amazing. I still have bouts of insomnia (have had these for many years) but the actual quality of my sleep has improved by a good 70 percent, including fewer incidents of insomnia. I fall asleep more quickly, sleep for longer and uninterrupted hours (e.g. sometimes as many as 8-9, occasionally even 10 if I've been extra tired), have more intense dreams, and feel much more rested and relaxed when I wake up. And getting up from a lying position on the floor has become increasingly easier. I view it as my morning workout. :) I also love the fact that my bedroom now feels so much more spacious. I hope you'll continue to reap the many benefits of floor sleeping, and that your viewers will seriously consider trying it out for themselves.

I already slept on the floor for a whole year. I'm just too lazy to change bedding stuff, I don't even use blanket.
Basically I sleep like a homeless and it works great. (Be aware of culture difference though, it too hot here in Asia)
Last year, I only used blanket in December for a week and it back to burning hot weather.
I only swear to use those comfortable things when I'm sick or when I need it.
I don't use chair, I use standing desk.
But live how you want and gradually change until it become a habit that you WANT to change.
