Complete oversight on my end - If your Impala has single-zone climate control (one dial for the temperature in the center instead of the 2 levers) you will only have to replace the 2 actuators on the passenger side. There will not be an actuator present on the driver's side.
This instruction helped me fix my 2016 Impala LTZ. Ordered the same actuator part in the link as well. Very pleased with the result and not having to burn a day away from my car at the shop. I pre-aligned the shaft of the new actuator with the old with a 12V supply and some alligator clips. Once mounted, I attached the connector at the very end with the key-off. After key-on, I let the car run for a few minutes and everything worked again. Clicking gone and passenger heat worked again. Thanks!
Very helpful video. I was told to take my Impala to the dealer, as they would have to take the dash apart to fix my issue. 2014 Impala with dual side control air. Driver side works fine, passenger side blows hot when the A/C cold is selected. It was intermittent at first, but finally went out completely. Didn't get the "blend door bongos", so I suspect that the motor went on the temperature blend control door. With guidance from your video and the pricing available on Amazon, I should be able to save about $400 on my repair. I also like that you seem to work the same way I do. I make mistakes and laugh at myself for them. Then pull up my "big boy pants" and move on. Will tackle this project over the weekend. Thank you
Thanks for your video… I was having the same problem you described. Driver side was staying cold no matter how I adjusted the temperature control. I live in West Virginia, where it gets cold and rains a lot this time of the year. I turned on the temperature control up all the way, and let it sit for like 20 minutes and was luckily able to get the driver’s side actuator to cycle one more time. I’m just going to leave the temperature all the way up for the rest of the winter.
Thanks for the straightforward video. I just bought my teenage daughter an '06 Impala with only 56,000 miles on it, but it's got the blend door bongos going on. I was afraid of what it would cost to have it fixed somewhere, but after watching this I think I can do it myself with a little time an patience.
@@CertifiedShadetree I did the replacement of these on Sunday, and it took me about 45 minutes to do the two on the right side, so I didn't think that was too bad. Odd thing when I went to the driver's side... there was no actuator there on my daughter's car. I triple checked the location, and there are studs where an actuator can bolt up, and a white shaft with a hole in the middle sticking out, but it's perfectly round and not keyed/slotted for an actuator. There's also no pigtail/harness hanging down anywhere. This car is super low milage and was owned by old people, so I don't think they messed with it. The only thing I can figure is every video I've found on these the cars showing actuator replacement have the dual zone climate control, and my daughter's car is a single. I can't find any source to confirm my suspicion, but it might be possible the single zone systems might only have the 2 actuators. Everything works as it should, so I'm marking it down as a successful repair. I thought I'd share that with you in case anyone else comes across the same thing I did.
So I left you a comment on another video about my defrost not working and you linked me to another video.. It was helpful for sure, but I learned if you unplug the “display” fuse under the hood and cycle the key it can fix/reset the positions. It won’t help with the bongos, but it fixed my car. Just some info if someone else has problems with one vent not working.
In order for the fresh air door to move you have to have the air set to come out the vents. You had it set on the floor and no re circulation will work if the air is set to come out the floor.
Well, I mean, if you happen to have scrawny toothpick-sized arms like I do you can certainly access the 2 on the passenger side just by dropping the glovebox down. Your mileage, as they say, may vary, so I say go for it..
I have thick arms and giant hands. I'm going with the remove the bottom part option. This is driving me nuts. And this is nothing compared to the driver side one. 😮💨
Well if by me owning a 2016 Cruze is any indication, I'd say probably not. I'm going off the assumption that GM uses the same parts across many models of the same era. I have had absolutely no issues with the Cruze. Tell ya what, if you have any blend door issues in your 10th Gen, be sure to let me know!!

This is absolutely ridiculous! I've had two 2011 Impalas now, both with low miles and BOTH have had these same issues and BOTH with transmission replacements (which was also noted as common issue). WTF can't GM recall and replace these parts on THEIR Dime?? Love me my Impalas, but I'm DONE after this one! Sad to say, I'm going back to Ford~
Like they did with the early 9th Gen Impalas with the rear suspension issues and the whole Cobalt ignition switch debacle, they'll blame it on "Old" GM and take no responsibility because technically they're an entirely new company post-bankruptcy. It's a story that's as old as time itself - auto manufacturer tries to save a buck, so they go with the parts supplier that will make the parts cheaper than the rest. Can't say any of them are immune to it, even the mighty Toyota is suffering from this problem nowadays!!
My mom has a 2013 with 70 something thousand miles and her mechanic said get rid of it soon because its going to be problems. He also said the local cops stopped using these cars because they all fall apart. Im glad i have a toyota. It has nearly double the miles as the impala, and no problems.

Could be a myriad of things. Low refrigerant charge, bad relay, bad compressor clutch, bad compressor clutch wiring, bad ambient light sensor, bad ambient temp sensor to name a few..
I just fixed the blend door bongo actuator recently. I also have the ac going on and off. It feels like there is cooling but the blower isn't working. How did you fix it? Is it an actuator?

@@CertifiedShadetree Haha, somehow you just knew that to be the case! Well, the bad one was the passenger side blend door. I disassembled the glove box and I had a lot more room to work. I still need to put it back together but the new actuator is in and no more stupid noise. I opened the old one and saw the tooth broken off. I rotated the gear and put it back together again so I'm keeping it on hand, just in case. I still have another new one as i bought it in a 2 pack. I was going to replace the recirc/fresh blend door actuator at the same time, but I'm gonna save it for now. I have too much going on now to worry about it if it's working fine. It'll probaby act up soon, but as long as it's fine now, I'm not gonna worry about it. Now, let's just hope the driver's side doesn't go out anytime soon. I've had so many things going on, I haven't even had time to email you personally to tell you about them. I start getting healthy again and now my life is jam packed with things to do and even working more hours! 😂

Getting that last screw out concealed by the glove box assembly, that was the difficult one to get out. I took the glove box apart to give me a lot more room and I just reassembled it. So for now, the job is all done. And hopefully neither go out anytime soon. If the other one on the passenger door goes out, I might just unplug it for the time being. I truly don't care if it's bring in fresh air or not. Recirculate takes strain off the HVAC anyway.

@@Harmanbrar0 If you're comfortable doing it yourself, and you're positive the compressor is kicking on, it's rather easy to add a half a can of refrigerant yourself. The "AC Pro" brand in the black can has the best dispenser for a DIYer, although they mostly sell the large cans of refrigerant.
That's the one good thing, they're all fairly easily accessible. Having owned as many of these cars as I have, it's almost second nature to me changing these actuators out, seeing as they fail quite regularly.. Now the mode door, that's the one you have to peel back the dash to get to!!

Until you lose one! I lost one and never found it. Tried ordering a couple new ones from several different online GM parts warehouses and my order gets cancelled right after I place it. They really should say the part is discontinued!!

😲DAFUQ?? I would've said $250 is highway robbery!! I honestly don't think it would take a shop more than an hour to change out the driver's side actuator, so 1 hour labor plus $22 for the part. Do you know anyone with tiny hands? Show 'em this video and give 'em a case of beer and call it good!! 🤣🤣
Ive changed the two on the passwnger side. I have a single zone vehicle. My main problem is that it doesn't switch the vents and it does it heat underneath on the driver side. Im confused as to what i should troubleshoot next
There is also a "Mode Door Actuator" that switch's the air from vent to floor to defrost. It looks different from the other ones and the way I understand it the dash has to come out to get to that one.
Hello I replaced the the far right actuator because it was thumping and it’s still thumping. It opens that cabin just fine on start up but when it closes seems to try to go past the closing point over and over again. Could it be that the new one was also bad or maybe I need to reset the positionings somehow
Did it make the noise right from the get-go? I would suspect the new actuator is bad - even when they're good, you can hear the actuator motor spinning and stopping when it meets some resistance.
Changed out my blend door actuator that was making noise, but I have another issue as well. (been an issue for a couple weeks, didn't happen when I was changing the actuator). All of a sudden, I have nothing blowing out of the front defrost. I took the HVAC mode selector actuator off and the gear shaft that stick out of it moves as I change the venting direction on the dash panel. Could the mode selector be bad even though it turns when taken off? I put a screwdriver in the geared slot to see if I could direct the air to the defrost manually but I had no luck with that as well. As a side note, I heard a thunk in the dash around the time it stopped blowing air to the defrost. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Assuming you want heat due to it being January (but you could be in the desert for all I know 🤷♂️) so I say change whatever side doesn't respond to the controls. As I showed in the video, they don't always click when they're going bad.
I have a 2010 and I hear to steady beats but when I put it in reverse I get a very fast one on passenger side near side, is that the same part just at a different speed?
So my blend door actuator isn't actuating. Tried all 3 actuators on the left one and they function, the right one doesn't even test them, it opened the door once and stopped Also my left one isn't there? But defrost still works, the face blowing just recent went out.. no clicking.. but some mode still function even though there is NOTHING on that white rod under my driver side. It's a 2016 limited, my dash and everything is different from any guide I've found
In the center of your control panel is there a single dial for the temp control? Dial, as in it looks identical to the fan speed on the left and mode select on the right. If that's the case, there is no blend door actuator on the driver's side. To cut down on confusion, your car is essentially a 2013 Impala that was carried over unchanged for 3 years, so instead of searching for info on a 2016 Impala Limited, search for a 2013 Impala instead.
The dial on the left controls the fan speed. All the way counterclockwise is off, all the way clockwise is high. In the middle you'll either have 2 levers or a single dial depending if your car has single-zone or dual-zone climate control. RED means HOT, BLUE means COLD, so move the knob or lever into the RED to get heat. The dial on the right controls where the air blows out of - turn it all the way counterclockwise for it to blow out the vents, turn it to the middle for it to blow out the floor, turn it all the way clockwise for the windshield defroster. Press in the right knob to activate the rear window defroster. Press in the left knob to activate the air conditioning.
Hey, I was wondering why you didn’t have to go though a HVAC relearn or calibration? Everything I’ve read about this job has suggested a calibration for the units to work at all, and I’ve replaced them 4x now and still having the same issue with clicking

I did the one on the left of the glove box last weekend and I realized if you plug the new one up and start the engine it will turn, took 2 times to start the engine to get it lined up but it worked.
For anyone coming to this video, there is a different, fourth actuator for the mode select. It is a different part and more difficult to get to as it is to the left of glove box. Seems to be the same cheap problem though
Do you have a new body style Impala or an old body style Impala Limited? If it's a Limited, it's the part I linked directly to in the description. If you scroll through the different part #s, they say they're all for Ram trucks. I don't know what to tell you if you have a new body style 10th Gen Impala.
I've watched this 12x. No clue how to get the left side to come out. Are there more than 3 screws? How do you get the clips out? And how the f**k do you get to the second screw on the right side?
Each actuator has 2 screws holding it in. The gearless ratchet will help tremendously!! If all else fails, pay someone with small hands to get up in there! What clips are you trying to get out?
They're all the same part. On your control panel, if there's a single dial for the temperature control, then there isn't an actuator on the driver's side. If there's 2 individual levers then there'll be one on the driver's side..
Mines making a roaring sound cant figure out the problem but the roaring sound stops when i turn the ac off plus i have that ticking sound on all 3 actuators any idea whats causing the roaring sound alrdy replaced the blower motor
Where is the roaring sound coming from? And you say it happens when you turn on the AC, do you mean when you turn on the blower fan or when you press the AC button?
I know these 9th generation cars are notorious for blowing actuators, I've got a 2012 Impala not high mileage 42.5k and I have no heat all the sudden, and it's got me stumped, no clicking actuators, coolant is at correct level no leaks, cabin air filter is new, blower motors are strong, inlet/outlet core hoses are both hot, equal temp indicated by digital thermometer so there is flow through the core, engine temp is normal so thermostat is working, water pump is functioning, if these cars have a heater control valve I don't see it, AC works fine and blows strong. Is there an independent fan that blows heat through the core that could be out or a fuse that runs it could be bad?? Can a stuck temperature blend door completely block heat from all vents? If anybody has any input I sure would appreciate it thanks!!!!
Does your car have single-zone or dual-zone climate control? I could see if you had single-zone, and the lone blend door actuator died in the cold position, you'd lose heat altogether. If you have dual-zone, the chances of both sides going bad at the same time are fairly slim, but not impossible (more likely you'll have heat on one side and the other side would be cold.) That being said I would absolutely change the blend door actuators. If you have single-zone, you won't have one on the driver's side..
@@CertifiedShadetree Yes it's a single zone system, so I thought maybe the culprit was a temperature blend door completely blocking the heat, plus I thought it was strange that I can hear the actuators switching between all the vent positions but absolutely silent when switching from hot to cold no noise at all, I'm trying every option to avoid changing the heater core but the fact that there seems to be flow from both hoses I don't think it's clogged, I really appreciated your insight you got a good channel man I really enjoy following it
I did the two behind the glove box no problem, but the driver side ones being a bitch as far as alignment for screws and room to work in. Yesterday I spent a lot of time upside down also taking out the blower motor and resister. So far I've spent about $300 on new resister blower motor and three new actuators. Mechanic wanted more then $500. So it kinda boils down to what you wanna spend on time and cut knuckles I guess.
OK, my car does NOT do this clicking. The passenger side is locked on heat... regardless of where I have the temperature control or if the A/C is on. I had read somewhere that this would be the blend door actuator. But, every video I find on replacing it says it's about some clicking sound. I see nothing in the comments about either driver or passenger side not changing with the climate control. So... 1) Will this fix this problem? and 2) Which one of the blend doors needs changed for this?
I mention it in the video that my driver's side actuator was dead and stuck in the cold position. So to answer your first question, YES replacing the actuator will fix the problem. The one you need to replace is the 2nd one shown in the video (although I would STRONGLY recommend you replace all 3 at the same time - once one of them goes, the other 2 aren't far behind.)
i've had them go bad within a week of replacing them sometimes...complete garbage component. i wish i could machine some new gears out of a lite metal so they would last longer

my 2013 impala has 242000 miles..i replaced all three actuators . aside that ive had very little problems with my impala

This is a lot easier to take the bucket off the glove compartment gives a lot more room to work just so extra work

@@CertifiedShadetree Haha, somehow you just knew that to be the case! Well, the bad one was the passenger side blend door. I disassembled the glove box and I had a lot more room to work. I still need to put it back together but the new actuator is in and no more stupid noise. I opened the old one and saw the tooth broken off. I rotated the gear and put it back together again so I'm keeping it on hand, just in case. I still have another new one as i bought it in a 2 pack. I was going to replace the recirc/fresh blend door actuator at the same time, but I'm gonna save it for now. I have too much going on now to worry about it if it's working fine. It'll probaby act up soon, but as long as it's fine now, I'm not gonna worry about it. Now, let's just hope the driver's side doesn't go out anytime soon. I've had so many things going on, I haven't even had time to email you personally to tell you about them. I start getting healthy again and now my life is jam packed with things to do and even working more hours! 😂

@@CertifiedShadetree LOL! Well, it drives home the point since even this "easy one" was a pain in the ass. Getting that last screw out concealed by the glove box assembly, that was the difficult one to get out. I took the glove box apart to give me a lot more room and I just reassembled it. So for now, the job is all done. And hopefully neither go out anytime soon. If the other one on the passenger door goes out, I might just unplug it for the time being. I truly don't care if it's bring in fresh air or not. Recirculate takes strain off the HVAC anyway.

@@Harmanbrar0 If you're comfortable doing it yourself, and you're positive the compressor is kicking on, it's rather easy to add a half a can of refrigerant yourself. The "AC Pro" brand in the black can has the best dispenser for a DIYer, although they mostly sell the large cans of refrigerant.

So I change my blind door and heater was working before only when I was driving and now heater doesn’t work both way idle or driving

That's the one good thing, they're all fairly easily accessible. Having owned as many of these cars as I have, it's almost second nature to me changing these actuators out, seeing as they fail quite regularly..
Now the mode door, that's the one you have to peel back the dash to get to!!

The hinges of the glove compartment have push out pins. Much easier to remove
Until you lose one! I lost one and never found it. Tried ordering a couple new ones from several different online GM parts warehouses and my order gets cancelled right after I place it. They really should say the part is discontinued!!

Ive changed the two on the passwnger side. I have a single zone vehicle. My main problem is that it doesn't switch the vents and it does it heat underneath on the driver side. Im confused as to what i should troubleshoot next

There is also a "Mode Door Actuator" that switch's the air from vent to floor to defrost. It looks different from the other ones and the way I understand it the dash has to come out to get to that one.

Hello I replaced the the far right actuator because it was thumping and it’s still thumping. It opens that cabin just fine on start up but when it closes seems to try to go past the closing point over and over again. Could it be that the new one was also bad or maybe I need to reset the positionings somehow
Did it make the noise right from the get-go? I would suspect the new actuator is bad - even when they're good, you can hear the actuator motor spinning and stopping when it meets some resistance.

Changed out my blend door actuator that was making noise, but I have another issue as well. (been an issue for a couple weeks, didn't happen when I was changing the actuator). All of a sudden, I have nothing blowing out of the front defrost. I took the HVAC mode selector actuator off and the gear shaft that stick out of it moves as I change the venting direction on the dash panel. Could the mode selector be bad even though it turns when taken off? I put a screwdriver in the geared slot to see if I could direct the air to the defrost manually but I had no luck with that as well. As a side note, I heard a thunk in the dash around the time it stopped blowing air to the defrost. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Wish I could help you out! Believe it or not, I've never had that issue before, so I haven't ever played around with the mode selector actuator.

It's for the driver's side temp control. It's only present if your car has dual-zone climate control. It is the exact same part as the other 2.

Just do exactly what I do in the video and there's no programming necessary.

Assuming you want heat due to it being January (but you could be in the desert for all I know 🤷♂️) so I say change whatever side doesn't respond to the controls. As I showed in the video, they don't always click when they're going bad.

Sounds to me like you have 2 bad actuators on the passenger side - heat and fresh air. They're all the same part number.
So my blend door actuator isn't actuating. Tried all 3 actuators on the left one and they function, the right one doesn't even test them, it opened the door once and stopped
Also my left one isn't there? But defrost still works, the face blowing just recent went out.. no clicking.. but some mode still function even though there is NOTHING on that white rod under my driver side. It's a 2016 limited, my dash and everything is different from any guide I've found
In the center of your control panel is there a single dial for the temp control? Dial, as in it looks identical to the fan speed on the left and mode select on the right. If that's the case, there is no blend door actuator on the driver's side. To cut down on confusion, your car is essentially a 2013 Impala that was carried over unchanged for 3 years, so instead of searching for info on a 2016 Impala Limited, search for a 2013 Impala instead.
On your 2010 models ...do you turn on the inside heat with both directional dials or do you set the heat on by the control knob???
The dial on the left controls the fan speed. All the way counterclockwise is off, all the way clockwise is high. In the middle you'll either have 2 levers or a single dial depending if your car has single-zone or dual-zone climate control. RED means HOT, BLUE means COLD, so move the knob or lever into the RED to get heat. The dial on the right controls where the air blows out of - turn it all the way counterclockwise for it to blow out the vents, turn it to the middle for it to blow out the floor, turn it all the way clockwise for the windshield defroster. Press in the right knob to activate the rear window defroster. Press in the left knob to activate the air conditioning.
Hey, I was wondering why you didn’t have to go though a HVAC relearn or calibration? Everything I’ve read about this job has suggested a calibration for the units to work at all, and I’ve replaced them 4x now and still having the same issue with clicking
@@zainemurad8937 If you set the new actuator to the exact same position the old one was in before you install it, it won't lose its calibration.

@@zainemurad8937 😬 Might have to find someone with a Tech II or clone of one to perform a relearn (or buy yourself one.) A VCX Nano is only $120 on Amazon. 2 saved trips to the dealership will easily cover the cost of it.
I did the one on the left of the glove box last weekend and I realized if you plug the new one up and start the engine it will turn, took 2 times to start the engine to get it lined up but it worked.

For anyone coming to this video, there is a different, fourth actuator for the mode select. It is a different part and more difficult to get to as it is to the left of glove box. Seems to be the same cheap problem though

Do you have a new body style Impala or an old body style Impala Limited? If it's a Limited, it's the part I linked directly to in the description. If you scroll through the different part #s, they say they're all for Ram trucks. I don't know what to tell you if you have a new body style 10th Gen Impala.

Correct. It's much easier to install if you set the new actuator's position to exactly where the old one's was.
I've watched this 12x. No clue how to get the left side to come out. Are there more than 3 screws? How do you get the clips out? And how the f**k do you get to the second screw on the right side?

Each actuator has 2 screws holding it in. The gearless ratchet will help tremendously!! If all else fails, pay someone with small hands to get up in there!

The wire harness connector? Lift the tab up and pry the connector out. Use a slotted screwdriver if you're having difficulty using your thumbnail..

They're all the same part. On your control panel, if there's a single dial for the temperature control, then there isn't an actuator on the driver's side. If there's 2 individual levers then there'll be one on the driver's side..
Mines making a roaring sound cant figure out the problem but the roaring sound stops when i turn the ac off plus i have that ticking sound on all 3 actuators any idea whats causing the roaring sound alrdy replaced the blower motor

I know these 9th generation cars are notorious for blowing actuators, I've got a 2012 Impala not high mileage 42.5k and I have no heat all the sudden, and it's got me stumped, no clicking actuators, coolant is at correct level no leaks, cabin air filter is new, blower motors are strong, inlet/outlet core hoses are both hot, equal temp indicated by digital thermometer so there is flow through the core, engine temp is normal so thermostat is working, water pump is functioning, if these cars have a heater control valve I don't see it, AC works fine and blows strong. Is there an independent fan that blows heat through the core that could be out or a fuse that runs it could be bad?? Can a stuck temperature blend door completely block heat from all vents? If anybody has any input I sure would appreciate it thanks!!!!
Does your car have single-zone or dual-zone climate control? I could see if you had single-zone, and the lone blend door actuator died in the cold position, you'd lose heat altogether. If you have dual-zone, the chances of both sides going bad at the same time are fairly slim, but not impossible (more likely you'll have heat on one side and the other side would be cold.) That being said I would absolutely change the blend door actuators. If you have single-zone, you won't have one on the driver's side..
@@CertifiedShadetree Yes it's a single zone system, so I thought maybe the culprit was a temperature blend door completely blocking the heat, plus I thought it was strange that I can hear the actuators switching between all the vent positions but absolutely silent when switching from hot to cold no noise at all, I'm trying every option to avoid changing the heater core but the fact that there seems to be flow from both hoses I don't think it's clogged, I really appreciated your insight you got a good channel man I really enjoy following it

I did the two behind the glove box no problem, but the driver side ones being a bitch as far as alignment for screws and room to work in. Yesterday I spent a lot of time upside down also taking out the blower motor and resister. So far I've spent about $300 on new resister blower motor and three new actuators. Mechanic wanted more then $500. So it kinda boils down to what you wanna spend on time and cut knuckles I guess.
Well look on the bright side, at least you weren't replacing any of these components when it was -20 outside!! 😁

OK, my car does NOT do this clicking. The passenger side is locked on heat... regardless of where I have the temperature control or if the A/C is on. I had read somewhere that this would be the blend door actuator. But, every video I find on replacing it says it's about some clicking sound. I see nothing in the comments about either driver or passenger side not changing with the climate control. So... 1) Will this fix this problem? and 2) Which one of the blend doors needs changed for this?
I mention it in the video that my driver's side actuator was dead and stuck in the cold position. So to answer your first question, YES replacing the actuator will fix the problem. The one you need to replace is the 2nd one shown in the video (although I would STRONGLY recommend you replace all 3 at the same time - once one of them goes, the other 2 aren't far behind.)
i've had them go bad within a week of replacing them sometimes...complete garbage component. i wish i could machine some new gears out of a lite metal so they would last longer
