If you want overclocking you have to go with E5-1xxx series. I should have known and explained in this episode that the e5-2xxx series is locked only BLCK overclocking which will be limited. Sorry for the confusion, I will keep researching

Stop this nonsense please... in no way is this "better for gaming" higher fps does not mean a better game play experience at all. Just look at your minimum fps the ryzen kills this cpu every game. I think its fun to see this content but dont lie to people about what is better man..

Actually there is another thing entirely that matters more than anything to do with frames, and this platform would kill even modern Intel at it. It's harder to quantify though, but it is possible. This system is going to be more "responsive" than Ryzen or 8th gen Intel. 7th gen might match it, but even that is debatable because it still uses DDR4. DDR3 is way more responsive than DDR4.

    • @swag-cc4uc
      @swag-cc4uc 6 лет назад

That makes no sense at all. Realistically, you would want better frame times and high FPS, and the Ryzen destroys in frametimes

X79 uses DDR3 which can be bought used for much cheaper than DDR4. Anandtech did a test a while back which showed that, while the higher clock speeds of the DDR4 RAM will yield you a higher max fps, the lower CAS latency of the DDR3 RAM would yield you a higher minimum fps. With a Rampage IV Extreme motherboard there's a modded BIOS that lets you use M.2 drives as well so with the current cost of RAM and the lower CPU latency with a ring-bus as compared to infinity fabric or Intel's new mesh there's many reasons for still going the X79-route.

From the tests is visible that Ryzen is giving higher minimum frame rates in all games. I run a X58 Sabertooth and have been using it for a boot drive since NVMe's came out.. You used to have to write the Tiano Core wrapper your self for the Bios but now its stupid easy with Refind.. I don't think Ryzen platforms will last longer. For example As I remember first Socket 775 platforms supported DDR2 400 mhz , last ones supported DDR3 1600Mhz. You could I theory run some oldest s775 processors in some newest s775 motherboards, but not the other way round. Now Rynen second generation was introduced and it supports fasted DDR4, by the time a 3rd generation will be introduced some motherboards will probably will not be able to support recommended memory types and they will seriously limit the power of new CPU's. You will end up replacing motherboard for full experience.
The only thing I hate about Intel's strategy to replace socket type every two years is that it is f...ing misleading.. They introduced i7-8700K on a socket 1151, but it if fully incompatible with previous platforms using socket 1151, and those are incompatible with with even earlier socket 1151 platforms. And the Xeon's ... Some motherboard supports some, some supports none. You have be a f...ing computer guru to build Intel platform from used parts.
On an AMD side you have nice and easy way of continuously upgrading your platform, you replace CPU, then you can replace your motherboard, then you may replace your CPU again, install bigger, faster memories, etc. Everything should work will everything. The only thing you can screw up is pairing newer CPU with older motherboard that has no BIOS updated to support it. You are not toasted yet, all you have to do is to barrow older Ryzen form someone and upgrade your BIOS or pay someone to do it. AMD has even thought about this problem. New motherboards supporting generation 2 Ryzens comes with a special sticker on box. AMD is a much more user friendly with upgrades.
I don't think Intel's strategy to force users to change whole platform with every generation is any beneficial to them and motherboard producers after all. On the one hand It makes upgrading CPU in your old rig obsolete, you will end up with maxed platform that is on the end of it's life anyway. on the other hand how many users are replacing CPU, motherboard and possibly memory every two years?. I think most users postpone their upgrades for another 2 years and replace whole rig at once. Is it generating more sales of Intel's CPUs and motherboards? I don't think so...

A lot of that has to do with the memory speed. At 2666mhz the 1680v2 has much better frametimes.
You also have to remember the 2700x is at 4.3ghz which is quite high, the 1680v2 can run ~4.8ghz pretty easily on a decent loop.
Another thing, most x79 boards do not support registered ECC and have to use unbuffered ECC which is as expensive as standard unbuffered DDR3.

Just because he wasn't able to get it past 4.65ghz on an AIO doesn't mean that was the max. I run mine at 4.6ghz at 1.3v on a D15, 4.8ghz at 1.4v is stable but the D15 can not keep it under control. Some run it 24/7 at 4.8ghz on a custom loop and it can hit ~5.7ghz under LN2.
I don't disagree that a 2700x is a better choice in general, especially with the prices of the x79 boards. In my case I looked at DDR4 prices and decided against paying $800-1000 for 64gb of decent DDR4 and instead snagged a 1680v2 for $300 and kept my memory (and board).
But there are deals to be had if you keep an eye out, I snagged a few x79 Deluxes for $100-150 last year and paired them with 1660's/1650s ($70-100) overclocked to 4.5-4.8ghz (all D15's) and 16gb of 2400mhz and threw some 1080's in them (also snagged on sale last year for $400 ea), they do just as well as the 1680v2 in games. But of course there is a risk and I'd always recommend someone looking for a primary build to buy something with warranties, etc.

Even now in 2022, these old x79 systems can still be built to be a very affordable and relevant system if you play your cards right. If you already have a high end x79 board laying around from an old computer and the RAM, you can grab a 1680v2 or any of the other Xeons of the time for $100-200 and have a very good 1080p gaming system. Some of the boards even have BIOS's online on various forums that add support for booting from an M.2 SSD for a massive performance jump on I/O; a PCIE to M.2 adapter will work in any PCI 3.0 complaint system, but the BIOS has to support booting from that, but worst case you throw a cheap SATA SSD in for your OS and load everything else on an M.2. But yeh the combination of quad channel RAM that was insanely OP when it came out in 2013, combined with old unlocked Xeons has allowed this platform to remain capable and relevant WAY longer than it was ever intended to. I definitely wouldn't dump a ton of money into an old system like this, but if you have your old RAM and mobo laying around from an old build, or youi can get those parts cheap, it can be very much worth doing instead of dropping $2000 on a brand new system.

The 1600 series are unlocked, but the 2600 series are locked. For OCing, the XEON's are very stable, and even the BCLK can be boosted anywhere between 7-14% (Depending on the silicon) 1600 series only support single CPU vs 2600 supporting up to two.
EVGA makes the SR-2 which can hold 2 XEONS of the 2011 socket. Though it's based on the C606 chipset.
My next two builds are going to be on the X99 and the X299 chipsets.

if you factor in price, this is a much better deal. Huananzhi x79 - 81 dollars, E5 1680V2 160, 8x4GB DDR3 ECC- 60. Compare that to X470 150 dollars, R7 2700x- 270, 4x8GB DDR4- 150. Performance per dollar gives the intel the win by far. and this setup wont be outdated for a long time. The ryzen is a bad deal anyways. 10600K is same price and faster.

It's always the board. You can buy (today, mid-2020) an 1900x for about $150 but a board for it will set you back by about $300. A kind of similar issue. Cheap CPU, expensive board. Sure, one can buy Shenzen boards (for the Xeons) at low prices but frankly if you have any issues the RAM process (let's assume it exists and works) will cost a fortune in shipping. Nevertheless, if one can find a deal somewhere, sure, these CPU/mobo pairs can be a good bargain.

i believe you have ecc ram mixed up with registered/buffered ram. all motherboards (except those requiring reg/buff ram) will run with ecc ram installed without any issues. if the motherboard does not support ecc, it'll see the ram as being non-ecc. and there really isn't much of a price difference between ecc and non-ecc ram. however, there is a HUGE difference in price between registered ram and non-registered ram. but x79 will not run registered memory...f.u. intel :P

i have both X79 and X58 and both are amazing chipsets. they are the reason why up until 2 years ago, they have been still relevant. cpu's only went up in performance a few percentages through the last 12 years. only until the last two years or so have we had some leaps in performance.
the prices for x79 and x58 cpu's are super low now adays and you can build a top notch system (add pci express m.2 cards) and do quite well vs the newer systems these days.
my x58 cpu is a better work horse than my intel 6600k.
