  • I'm kicking off 2024 with a fantastic project: I've been commissioned to write music for a new ballet for Ballet Black that will tour the U.K. later this year. I feel incredibly privileged to work on this project with an incredible creative team.
The choreographer Sophie Laplane (www.sophielapl...) is in London this week to create the new ballet, so I have to work to a tight deadline.
I've condensed a 2-hour sketching/writing session into this short video today.
As always, if you have any comments or questions, I'd be delighted to hear from you. Please subscribe, too!

Great video Tom; this came up randomly and I had used Spitfire for Atmos sounds for the intro’s to some of my Jazz/Fusion tracks that I’m compiling for an album after a building a studio in 2023.. your workflow and overall sound, despite being for different works; there’s a lot of inspiring ideas here mate so thank you! Best of luck for all your future productions, sound absolute top quality! 👏💥

Fascinating, Tom. I've been watching orchestral template / workflow vids like a maniac in anticipation of upgrading my iMac and here you are loading instruments as you feel it! Which is, deep down, how I think I do my best thinking. I am currently working on an emotional student film project, not dissimilar to this brief, so your workflow is inspiring me. I very much appreciate you letting us into these intimate creative moments, bare bones and very human and very real. I love the piece, look forward to any progress videos you might post and hope one day to watch a bit of the finished ballet to see how it turns out. Thank you!

Thanks very much for watching! Yes I’m very fortunate to have a new Mac Studio so RAM and CPU limitations are a thing of the past (so far!). Usually I would often write at the piano and manuscript before moving to Logic but for the tight turnaround of this project I’m straight into the DAW so I can get the sound of the work ratified early-on.
I really appreciate your kind comments! There are absolutely more videos like this in the pipeline!

@@TomHarroldMusic Looking forward to those!~ and i for one would appreciate you leaving in some of your creative decisions instead of cutting it. For instance, if you were to talk us through choosing instruments and why (I know you love the Stacks library!). Picking instruments in a trial and error way to find the right one for the idea is a process we all go through. Harmony decisions would be cool to follow along to as well. I understand this is your prelim sketch so hopefully as you refine your orchestration you can take us with you.

@@robertwisden7202 easily done! In this particular video I kinda got in the “zone” and forgot to talk 😅 so yes in future ill hope to be more vocal about those decisions
